My friend recommended this place because it's his favorite brunch in the city and it was fun! The best way to describe the Comet is that it was hipster before hipsters were hipsters and served craft beer long before local craft breweries started popping up all over town. They were serving big burritos before other burrito chain restaurants were in town. The vibe is funky and cozy. The food always great. I'm a huge fan of Monday taco nights (especially when they have chorizo tacos). Sunday brunch is an absolute treat. Keep in mind that the mild salsa is mild, but the medium and hot are SPICY. I've lived on the Westside for so many years. I hung out in College Hill in the late 80s. I've been through Northside a million times, yet this was my first visit to The Comet. My son invited me, and he has a real history with The Comet. The food was awesome. The crepe cake was like nothing I've had before. I couldn't figure out what it would taste like by the description, but it was highly recommended by several patrons. It was not overly sweet. The fruit , sauce, and pistachio were perfect compliments, in my opinion. The service was fine. I see other reviews where people are complaining. It is a bar, small staff doing what they do. We were looking for some late night vegan eats after the Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings concert. We were craving a Comet burrito and decided to swing on by. We had about 20 mins until the kitchen closed so I grabbed a yummy winter ale and we destroyed those burritos. Step Four: Wait for the delicious food to arrive at your table. We came during their brunch menu and I ordered the carnitas tacos (though next time I'm going to have to try that Elote! The service seemed friendly enough and we were able to snag a table. The food was pretty decent, though I don't think I would order what I did again. The watermelon salad that it came with was interesting too! It had really great flavor, and the cilantro really made the dish. I also tasted the biscuits and gravy. The peppery gravy was truly delicious. If I was feeling like more of a lush, I definitely would have ordered it. One small frustration with the business model is asking for a tip a non full service restaurant. I don't mind busing my own table/etc., but I think that's something they should consider (I know it's different too if you're tipping for a mixed drink/bar service too). I definitely want to come back on bluegrass night to have that experience. All in all, this is a pretty cool dive-y spot with a cult following. I'll be back to check it out again. read more

The tacos are an insult to Mexican food. I am not Mexican, but I have loved Mexican food for years and have lived in California and Chicago for several years, two places that have lots of real Mexican food on offer. These are tacos for people who are afraid of going to an actual Mexican restaurant. The bar is fine. The beer selection is good. I've heard good music there (no, I'm not talking about the bluegrass. Usually, when I hear that stuff, I'm worried that someone has a rope and I'm probably nervous for my safety.) It's just that the tacos are so offensively bad. This is one of those places I've heard everyone talk about but haven't gone in the 10+ years I've lived in Cincinnati. I finally crossed off an iconic Cincy location off my to do list! The first thoughts we had as we headed in with a group of about 8 on a Sunday was "I'm eating Mexican, in a dice bar, listening to Blue Grass." And that kinda sums up the eclecticness of the place and the neighborhood! It's dark which makes it look dingy, but I love me a good dive lookin place. This is perfect. There's not a ton of seating, but we did snag the nice round booth, unfortunately the table is a little too small for the booth. You place your order at the bar. They have a few taps and a generous supply of liquor. Check their board for both food and drink specials. There's also about 3 refrigerator cases with canned and bottled beer you can purchase. (Fun fact, Little Kings is normally 2 for $5.) The food is sort of build your own ala carte. You can any meat/tofu, and veggies to orders. Hubby and I got the quesadillas and an order of nachos with queso. And there was plenty of food! The entrees normally.come with chips and your choice of salsa. The mild was definitely flavorful! The medium lacked the flavor but had a slight bit of heat, but not overpowering. The food was delicious and was very generous portions for what you paid for. The live band wasn't overly loud for the smallish space either. They also have a nice patio out back with about 6-8 tables as well if you like dining outside. We tried this place on a Tuesday night around 7p. We found a place to park across the street with no problem. Upon entering and not being greater, we realized that we could seat ourselves. But just before sitting down we happened to notice a sign saying to place your order at the bar. When I approached the bar, the bar tender immediately asked me what I would like. This gave me the impression that most people are regulars who don't need to see a menu. But it was my first time. I proceeded to order Rice and Beans (basically, it's a burrito bowl). I let her know up front that I had a very annoying request - I wanted the rice and beans in one bowl and everything else in a separate bowl. She totally understood and then asked me what all we wanted in our bowl. I took her suggestion and tried the mixed beans (pinto and black) and the chicken (instead of beef). I also ordered guac, salsa, onions, shredded cheese, sour cream and lettuce. The annoying thing about this? The guac, salsa, cheese, sour cream and meat are all extra and you are charged separately. Who on earth would order a burrito and not want this things?? I wish they'd just charge the rate they want and make it flat. Paying for "extras" makes me feel like they're nickel and dime-ing. After placing our order, she asked if we'd like to open a tab or pay immediately. We left a card with her to open a tab. Then she explained that we'd need to walk our order receipt to the kitchen window which was in the next room. We ended up sitting in the second room because it was entirely empty. And not having any high chairs, I wanted my thirteen month old to be able to exist and not annoy fellow customers. (The first room had a few tables that were full and the patio had a set of steep stairs leading down the hill). There was another family with kids who were playing pool, so this place obviously attracts all ages. Our food probably took about fifteen minutes to come out. And when it did, we saw that they actually put EVERYTHING "on the side". Lol. One bowl for every topping. We each made our own bowls with what we wanted. Looking back, I wouldn't bother getting the onion because they're raw. The chicken is pulled and seasoned, but not very flavorful or juicy. But the salsa of the month was good (roasted garlic salsa). The guac probably isn't made in house and is meh. But I really appreciated the large portion of sour cream. In fact, the whole thing was a large portion and super share-able. So that's nice! Once you're done you pick up after yourself. There's a place for your empty trays and glasses right next to the kitchen window. I wasn't really blown away by my experience here. But I've heard such great things about they're brunch? Maybe I'd try it some weekend if I could get there without the kiddo. read more

This review is purely on their brunch because I LOVE a good brunch I mean look at this crepe cake. It was amazing!!! Good definitely sells out later in the day. Had a guy come up and say they sold out just about a hour after I ordered. They are still a full bar so there's options of mimosas, blood Mary's, etc, all the brunch drink goodness. You order at the bar and take your ticket to the kitchen so if you want a sit down restaurant that serves you, look elsewhere. If you've ever been to the comet, you know parking is rough. There's limited places to park which is why I don't go to the comet very often. Even the side streets are pretty packed. It's a gem of a place though, great atmosphere whether for brunch or in the evening for a show. I have yet to try their queso which I've heard is killer. I'll be back comet! read more

I took a vegan date here because she had heard good things about their tacos, and wanted to give them a shot. I'm always on board for a good burrito, and felt like this location offered something to appease both of us, and a good $2 beer special. All the beer specials were basic cheap domestics in cans, but that's no big surprise. The food does actually Weiwei, and as dumb as that sounds to go to a little dive bar to hope for a good meal reviews have said that I should expect that here I don't really know what was wrong with those reviews though. What are you up getting was a giant burrito full of decent food, none of it was really that great. And the accompanying chips that were offered pretty stale and just tasted like old bed to chips as for the real reason we went in the first place, I date thought the tofu had a decent spice to it, but needed a lot more seasoning, and probably should've been pressed longer to get the fluid out . So it was okay. The staff were nice, and it was comfortable enough, and I think they have live music most evenings, so might give them another shot... Just don't really anticipate that happening anytime soon read more

The Comet has been a mainstay in Cincinnati and my life for as long as I can remember. It's a bar, concert venue, gallery of sorts, and restaurant. This is the first time I've had something other than drinks or a burrito. The experience falls into the "where have you been all my life" category. All of the dishes were delightful... especially the dessert. That was amazing. Depending on when you go, the only potential caveat is the noise and that other patrons tend to be younger and hipsters. This may be a pro or con, depending on your perspective. There are often people of all ages and walks of life there, which I appreciate. Overall, my experiences at the Comet have been positive. The food is 4 stars but the service is 3. It had snowed the night before so I called to see if they were open. It was an after thought because we were pulling up, but my husband was concerned they were closed. The lady at the bar answers the phone. I say hello, I was just calling.. in mid sentence she cuts me off and says yes, were open with an annoyed attitude. I was like hmm, ok. I said thank you and hung up. When you walk in the way they have you place your orders is weird. There is not really a server, you place your order at the bar, get a ticket and take it to a window on the other side of the restaurant. Then you go sit down and then someone brings you your food. The line was slightly long. It was my first time here and there were no directions to tell you what to do, so after a few minutes I asked the people in front of me who told me what to do. You seat yourself and order at the bar. I finally get to the counter and it's the rude lady. I was nice to her and she was somewhat decent. However I didn't tip her because she was rude and she didnt realize I was the girl who called and she cut me off mid sentence. I order my food and take the ticket to the window and realize I forgot to order my crepe cake. I go back to the front and tell the lady (I posted a picture of her) I forgot my cake. Yallll..... she literally rolled her eyes, turns to the system to enter my order and then says.."I need your signature and this time a total" and circles the tip and total lines. Mind you I gave a total for my first ticket I just didn't tip her because she was rude and had a bad attitude. After this she definitely didn't get a tip the second time around. However, the men working the kitchen (where you drop your order ticket off) were nice. By this time I was already aggregated and annoyed, but I still managed to be nice because they didn't do anything. Also, I'm not sure why she was tripping over a tip when she had a bad attitude because not one person ever came to help us after our food was delivered. I saw one guy randomly walking around but he didn't seem to really be helping anyone. There wasn't any service after the food was brought to the table so what was anybody doing for a tip? I don't mind tipping at all but once you get an attitude or act unpleasant, you can hang it up with me! A tip is a reward or way to acknowledge the person giving you good service to say thanks and is not in any way an obligation. For brunch we ordered the Hot Mess, Buttermilk Biscuits & Gravy, and Crepe Cake. Their food was really good. All of the dishes were good and seasoned well. Their hash browns that come with the biscuits & gravy were very very good. Seasoned perfect and cooked well! The Hot Mess was different but I liked it. It consisted of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, jack cheese, potatoes, sour cream, scallions, and sriracha hot sauce. It was very tasty! The biscuits & gravy were also yummy! The biscuits had a slightly crispy edge with a crumbly tender middle. The Gravy was seasoned well and added the cherry on top! The 20 layer Crepe Cake was amazing! It was orange crepes, pastry cream, toffee sauce, lemon cream, nuts and strawberries. It was so good! The flavors went together well and the crepes were perfect! If you like sweet brunch dishes this is definitely for you. We enjoyed this! I also tried their homemade ginger ale. It wasn't good. It tasted like ginger but had a weird taste. It started out ok when you first sip it and then the after taste flat lined. It was a quick pop of fizz and then whomp, whomp, whomp. Very peaceful bar for a weekday. Calm 50s, 60s, and folk melodies play on the radio as the dim lights and dingy tables set the ambiance. Two backlit glass front coolers full of craft beer allow for choices that are welcome in such a place. The bartender and patrons are grungy yet somehow beautiful. The biscuits and gravy actually had maple in it, which I should have noticed before I ordered because I was not a huge fan of the savory and sweetness together. The biscuits were giant and I would definitely splitting this dish. The bf got the eggs benedict which was great. I had a bite and the poached eggs were cooked to perfection, the sauce was also perfect, great flavor. We would order this again. Each dish also comes with a side of potatoes. These seem like they are in a giant bin somewhere in the back and they throw them in a skillet for warmth. Ours were stale, and cold. Not very appealing, but our table agreed that this would be the perfect hangover brunch spot. Not the best brunch I've ever had, but worth checking out. read more

The food is also good - I had never tried anything until my boyfriend highly recommended the burrito. Dear god - a packed burrito that is quite delicious! I absolutely enjoyed very bite and will gladly order it again! The Comet has an amazing beer selection and they always have great shows going on. Two main reasons why most people go to The Comet. The third reason is that they have the most badass burritos and quesadillas. Their burritos are the best in Cincinnati. They are gigantic and you get a ton of food for what you pay. Not only do you get a burrito packed to the point of it possibly exploding, you get really great tortilla chips with it. I always get a side of amazing guacamole to eat with the chips. I love the atmosphere of The Comet. We usually go earlier in the day during the week to grab dinner here. Around five or six. It's usually not packed at all. Sometimes we're the only people sitting in the dining area. The main reason we go around this time is so we avoid a band playing. It's really loud and you can't hear yourself think when a band is playing. Great for when you are there seeing a show, not so great when you just want to sit and eat some food and talk to friends. If you are coming here to order food, make sure you go to the bar to order your food and look at a menu. After you order your food the bartender will give you a piece of paper to take into the dinning area and take it back to the kitchen window where the cook will trade you the piece of paper for a table marker and will bring your food out for you when you are done. People seemed to be confused by this in other reviews. They also have an amazing jukebox I would check out. Awesome song selection and albums to pick from.
