I was mainly upset because they had Bennie's on their menu online, and that was a big reason why The Coffee Mug was even on my list for a road trip. Even without them, the place was pretty OK. The hostess who sat my friend and I had the personality of... nothing. If you could be monotone without even speaking, that is what she was. However, what the hostess lacked in personality our waitress definitely made up for. She was lively and fun, and she was like that with everyone. So since I was cheated out of my Eggs Benedict I decided to go with the Popeye omelet: Lots and lots of cheese, lots and lots of spinach, plus tomatoes, avocado, and mushrooms. The omelet was huge, which is good. The spinach was a little tough to cut through, but the omelet as a whole was delicious. My omelet came with a side of wheat toast, already buttered, and red potatoes. I'm not a huge fan of adding salt to food, but sadly these potatoes needed the added sodium. They were also unevenly cooked; some of them were under-cooked, and others were overcooked. . Overall I would call the experience interesting. There were both good and bad elements to the meal, but in the end I think I'll check out another place before giving this one another shot. read more

We stayed in Elko for one night. We were a little early for our room so I went online and found The Coffee Mug. It said family restaurant so I figured it wasn't just coffee. They have a very extensive menu and the dining area is large. My husband got the Philly cheese steak. It had plenty peppers and onions and was very tasty. I got the tuna melt which was also very tasty and had plenty tuna salad and cheddar cheese on sourdough. Since we saw they had a big breakfast menu as well we decided to come back the next day on our way out of town. We both got the 3 pieces of thick bacon, 2 eggs, and toast. We like our bacon crispy crispy and it was perfect. My husband was pleased because they actually had grits which is rare out west. Both of us were happy with the eggs. Mine scrambled with cheese were great and his over easy with the grits were just right. The service was also very good. We will be sure to eat here again when we come through town. read more

This was a great place to come for breakfast in Elko. The service was fantastic, the atmosphere was authentic, and the food was good. I read a comparison of this restaurant to a Denny's, but this restaurant is much better. Denny's tries to emulate restaurants like this one. Our waitress was perfect. We had coffee and waters within moments of sitting. The food came out very fast. And on top of the service our waitress placed the order for my daughters side dishes as a breakfast order to save us money. The food was very good. The eggs were cooked cooked perfectly and the toast was surprisingly good. My son commented that the milk was particularly tasty as well. This is the second time I called in a pick up order and the same thing happened. Each time, I got there and had to wait at least five minutes for my food which I considered a good sign that it would be fresh and hot. Not even close. I ordered breakfast with French fries. The eggs were cold, the fries old oily and wilted and the toast was cold and floppy. When I told the cashier the fries were bad they just dropped them in oil and gave me the same fries back. I knew because I spotted one with two black burn marks when I looked at them. Same thing happened before. Elko has a limited number of breakfast restaurants but it's just not worth ever going back. Just stopped in for some quick lunch on the way to Ely. We ordered basic chicken tenders/fries and fish and chips. All the food was great. A semi-old timey cafe. I got an avocado burger melt and it was awesome. Even better? My daughter asked about an item on the menu and the server was honest about it, then suggested another dish. There is nothing fancy, but they have quite large portions of food throughout the day. This place seems to always be busy. There are lot's of locals, so that is a good sign and many with families. There was a waiting line during breakfast rush hour that kept the staff hopping. I personally had their Garden Burger. It is an amazing black bean burger patty, topped with rich avocado, sauteed green peppers, onions and mushroom. If you want something on the healthier side, I highly suggest this dish. However, I do suggest... INDULGE YOURSELF! Try their homemade pies with Ice Cream. I had their blue berry pie and apple pie. This is a simple coffee shop that I visited during an impromptu stay in Elko (of course, I was following Yelp recommendations). I was heading back home, facing a long drive, and wanted something that would hold me over until dinner time. I was definitely not disappointed. On a Sunday morning at 6:30 am, there were locals waiting for the waitress to unlock the front door- The Coffee Mug definitely has its share of regulars, as all of the locals were greeted by name. I was seated promptly by a friendly hostess and immediately given both coffee and water. The coffee was decent, not mind-blowingly amazing, but I know that I'm a coffee snob and won't fault a place for average coffee. Besides, it woke me up and prepared me for the food, so it served its purpose admirably. I ordered the Shirely's Special (chicken-fried steak and eggs), which arrived in around 15 minutes. I'm sure there are many people who are better versed in sausage gravy than I am, but I know what I like- gravy that starts with a well-cooked roux and lots of flavor. The gravy at The Coffee Mug was not like this, but it was still really good since it contained lots of big pieces of sausage. It's not what I usually go for, but it was way better than I expected. The steak wasn't overly large (I actually considered this a good thing), but the meal also came with two fresh biscuits and another serving of gravy on the side. I ended up eating just one of the biscuits with gravy, and it was more than enough for me. Overall, the service/atmosphere was excellent, the food was very good, and the coffee was on par with most other coffee shops. The soup that was served was cold, the appetizer had two empty motzerella cheese sticks (only the breading, no middle), my entree (the works burger) as I was putting the tomato onion and lettuce on, I picked up the lettuce and found two green moving bugs!
