My favorite restaurant when I was a student at ASU. A short walk from campus and you can get access to tasty burgers grilled in front of you and a salad bar to customize your meal. I used to carry at least 20 dollars in cash just in case I wanted to eat here. Only complaints really is that you do have to wait for the food to cook if time is a concern and the food isn't cheap. How have we not been here yet??? The Chuck Box has been on my Yelp list for a long time, and we finally ventured in on a Saturday evening. The line was really long, and we relied on other customers to let us know what we needed to do - stand in one line to order, then move to another line to get your food. Although unconventional, this method was HIGHLY effective. We didn't wait too long at all, and the line was constantly moving. The burgers were fantastic - I had a bacon cheeseburger with cheddar cheese. I loved every bite. The fries were also delicious. My husband opted for the double big one and fried mushrooms. The mushrooms were not my vibe - they were fried perfectly to a crisp but lacked flavor. The building itself is really old and not clean at all. Maybe it's cleaner during a less busy period of the day. We ate outside, the only place we could find a table. The toppings bar is also in the center, where the line wraps around, so you have to wiggle your way in to get whatever toppings and condiments you want. The staff did a good job replenishing, and I could see plenty of ice underneath to make sure the toppings/condiments didn't go bad, but the other customers were so friggen messy. Get spot with solid food. Burgers were flavorful and juicy. Onion ring batter was great and had a nice crisp. All of the staff were very friendly. Condiment station was a A+. New to the area and honestly this place makes me miss home because while Chuck Box is good, it's not great compared to what was available back in the NY-Metro area. The mesquite smokiness is absolutely wonderful but can't say I'm overly impressed. Think I had higher expectations for the meat patty itself. Definitely solid and worth it if you're in the area, but I won't be driving down from Scottsdale again for Chuck. read more

Delicious mesquite burgers right by the ASU Design School. They are CASH ONLY, fyi! Came in on a rainy Saturday night and it was pretty busy. You order then wait in line to get your burger as they grill it right in front if you. If you order sides like fries, it's self serve as you move down the line to pay. Service was friendly! After paying you can bring your food to another self serve counter to dress your burger! Variety of sauces and veggies. Wish the lettuce was a bit fresher. Got our food to go - we got the big one (1/3lb) and great big big one (1/2lb). Also got fried and onion rings. Everything was as good as we expected. This is one of the best burgers I've ever tried, obviously service is not going to be like a restaurant is more like burger stand. This place is been here since the 60s multiple generations of parents and sons and it becomes something to of tradition to families. One great big one, two big ones, two bacon cheeseburgers, two fries, onion rings, a zucchini/mushroom and four draft root beers. $89.xx price seems ok. We arrived mere seconds before a massive line formed. Placed our orders and patiently waited for the burgers, grabbed our sides and such and paid. They brought the root beers to us. We sat outside in the front with misters. Total time from ordering to chowing down was around seven minutes. Burgers and root beers were good yet the sides were meh. Our group of 4 visited following the Par Tillman event. As expected this long time Tempe staple was packed- the line went across the restaurant and out the side door and a bit down the block. This is not a fancy place, rustic but comfortable. The food as always was worth the wait. The line moved fast due to their efficient staff. The burger patty is cooked very well. That is what we liked the most. Despite that we thought it was good but didn't knock our socks off. We had the guac and bacon burger (I added green chile) and my husband had the one with the green chile. I think the rest of the ingredients on the burger were more basic. That being said I think that if people are looking for more of a regular basic burger this is a great spot. We also really enjoyed the onion rings and fried zucchini. The service is great. I can't believe I've never been here. A legend. In line I was told that this is like our Eegees in Tucson but with burgers. Went to Chuckbox last evening before a Pat Benatar concert on ASU Campus! Was just as good as I remember. I've been going to Chuckbox for the better part of 40 years as I grew up going with my family to the (now closes) location off of Shea Blvd and Scottsdale Rd.). It was simply amazing as always. Loved the food, loved the hole in the wall decor. There wasn't much of a line which can always be worrisome because they cook everything fresh to order. Always a fun experience walking through the line past the grill and seeing all the burgers being cooked.
