I went to this venue in late September to see one of my favorite music artists, Elbow. For those unaware, they are a British band from Manchester that's been around since the late 90s, and they're unfortunately more popular in Europe. The songs range from simple ballads and sadder tracks to louder ones, with many featuring a strong orchestral mix, all backed by Guy Garvey's lyrics, which range from soft to booming. In other words, take the old Coldplay (Rush of Blood to the Head period or so) music, make the vocals less falsetto, and add a few more classical instruments, and you have these guys. The opening act that night was Why Bonnie, a soft-spoken artist with a pretty voice who was doing songs entirely on a single guitar, apparently because the rest of the members were sick or something. This led to many of the songs sounding somewhat similar, though I did like a bunch of them.
Anyway, outside of the artists, the venue was a bit dark but nice. The main thing to always worry about at venues is the acoustics, and they were fantastic here. There was plenty of room (or, I guess, you could say Elbow room in this case) with good views from the main area and some space above the stage. The drinks were overpriced, but hey, it's an NYC venue in Williamsburg to boot. The staff were friendly, and it was easy enough to get inside. It's not my favorite venue I've been to, but it worked perfectly for an artist like this. I would recommend them.
