The Paper Box might feel like an up and coming venue but it's been around for a handful of years. It is a super interesting warehouse-type space that has become a consistent concert / live music venue that has attracted all sorts of random crowds. Ultimately, it's a nice option that isn't a typical nightlife establishment. The music on stage really varies night to night. Some nights it's a metal fest and some others it's DJ night and house music is in order. I personally enjoy it when it's a hip hop oriented show and some local artists get up on stage and do their thing. If they're good, the crowd usually gets into it. The bar is nice and spacious, but whenever they staff only one bartender or several slow ones the bottlenecking at the counter can get serious. I know they accept credit cards, but the couple of times the bartenders tell me it's out of order and it becomes a cash only spot. This isn't ideal of course, but it might just be bad timing. Occasionally when they have that outdoor space (directly behind the stage) that really becomes like a smoking area for those seeking the puff. There is a new goth, punk and industrial scene brewing in the underground of Brooklyn. Nowhere To Run was the perfect platform to highlight bands from all over with the same post punk vibe. The headliner was the biggest draw, hailing from Barcelona Spain, it's Belgrado. The band is melodic, edgy and very danceable. The lead singer, is like the modern Debbie Harry with a platinum blonde bob and a sparkly dress. I arrived in perfect timing for the show to start at 9pm. I had just enough time to grab a brew, say hi to friends and stand in the front for a good spot. The stage presence is theatrical and dark, in the best ways. I loved the addition of the video footage. Cemetery backgrounds added the necessary gothic touch. The drinks here are not the cheapest. I stuck with the $5 cans. And switched to the All Day IPA for the last two. There are three bathroom stalls but there is a constant wait for the bathroom. Yikes! Sometimes I wish I could take it outside. Since, I can't pace your drinking of beer and water. The Paper Box, was the perfect set up with two rooms, two stages and a back patio for the smokers and the socializing. Patio closed promptly after the last band. Little bird told me this festival might happen again next year. And this nerdy, goth hopes so. I will not triple book myself again. I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't this. My girlfriend and I were invited to a DJ set here, and were thankful the parking situation in the area is easy. The event was supposed to start at 9pm, we arrive at 10pm and they're still setting up. Okay cool, no big deal. Let's order a few drinks and chat to pass the time. $14 for a TINY gin & tonic? Bro, you aren't pouring drinks at a fancy NYC nightclub. We are in a warehouse-type music venue, you shouldn't be charging that much. Outdoor area in the back is pretty cool, though - lots of graffiti. Just a shame that the space never really filled up with attendees, the show would have had better energy. read more

Very cool spot! Came over the weekend for a #House78 event and it was awesome. The space is big and has a pretty fun decor, tons of lights and a great sound system. Its composed of a section in front of the stage and then one to the side where there are fancy couches and tables. There's also an open space towards the back which has a ton of graffiti, it makes for some great pictures! I really liked that we were allowed to bring in food (no drinks though). The staff was super friendly as well, especially the bouncers. The bathroom situation could be better - there were three small ones in total and all unisex so the line was always long. Also docking one star because of the location which is a bit out of the way. Nonetheless, I would def. go back for another event! read more

Love this spot !! It's a fairly new live music venue with one of the best live sound in bk. Sound people were very cordial and super professional. The place is huge and they also have a pretty big outdoor area in the back. Beer selection is average and gotta give props to the very nice bartenders. The Paper Box is one of those places where you walk up to the outside of the building and look around for a good five minutes trying to figure out if you're in the right place. The drinks were reasonably priced. They had a really good deal: a PBR and a shot of liquor for $7.00. The cans of beer were all $5.00 and bottles were $7.00. Mixed drinks were around 8 or 9 dollars. The music was probably the best part of the entire experience. The back yard was really trendy and good for photos but it can get a little cramped if there is more than 15 people there. A lot of people were smoking marijuana inside the bar area and it was treated like a normal thing. So if you're asthmatic, this might not be the place for you. Cool space! Came here to check out a friend's hip-hop showcase and liked the vibe. It's a bit out of the way, but I forgot that part as soon as I took advantage of their $6 PBR + a shot special. House vodka makes everyone forget their commute. The place seems like it would be really rad in the summer time, since there was an open area in the back. It was just slightly too cold for us to enjoy, but the mural painted out there was cool. It had Futurama characters, and everyone knows I have a cartoon crush on Fry. (...well, I guess now everyone knows). Minus one star for the cover - $10, really? It's basically one big room. read more

I came here last night for a Halloween party and it was okay. Our bartender didn't know what a mind erasor was but we explained it to her and she was able to make it. She was very friendly and attentive, which was refreshing. $12 per drink seems pretty reasonable/standard for the Williamsburg area. Came here to watch a local band...the show promoter didn't sell enough tickets so we all were kicked out (even though we paid for tickets) 30 minutes into the show. Never got to see the band i paid to see. Pretty inconsiderate and I never got my money back. EDIT - it turns out it was the promoter's fault. The venue itself is very nice and has a full bar with lovely security staff and bartenders. Not sure exactly why this happened but the owner reached out to me and is a very reasonable and nice person overall who went out of his way to put me in contact with the right people. Ive come here twice for events and always had a great time. I love the small, but refreshing outdoor back part. Theres always drink specials and its easy to find. What i dont like is how hot it is in here--they never have any type of air flowing in there and the events filled with people make it even hotter. The bathrooms. Theres plenty of bathrooms, but none of them lock. yes theyre private, but i usually have to whip out my gymnastic skills and do my business while using my leg to keep the door shut. Came here on Saturday afternoon with my boyfriend to attend Troma Entertainment's annual film festival called "Tromadance". He's a film nerd and this is one of his fave independent film studios/distributors and they're a pretty big deal in the cult/horror/bmovie/independent world. It was a fun free event and also the first time that Tromadance was hosted at The Paper Box. As a venue I think this place is pretty neat. Aside from being located in a really colorful and awesome part of Brooklyn that I don't normally poke around, The Paper Box is a cool open space that lend themselves to hosting all sorts of community events, film festivals and screenings, art exhibitions, musical performances, etc. Their backyard is really neat and features some really fantastic (and very bright colored) graffiti work done by clearly skilled artists and not by self-entitled, 14 year old wannabe vandals. There was even a Super Mario styled power box thing (you know, where Mario went when he needed a power flower, a carrot for the elevating jumping bunny suit, etc) painted on one of these walls...the only reason that a picture of me uppercut punching it doesn't exist is because it's unfortunately about 10 feet above from the floor and I measure in at a whooping 5 feet. The boyfriend thinks I'm obsessed with my height, I call it "taking ownership of the vertical challenges I occasionally experience". Plus lots of the world's most awesome things come in small packages...anyways, I digress. I can't hate on a place like Paper Box because we certainly need more venues like this that are run by PEOPLE and not soul-sucking jerkfaces who suck on Ticketmaster's corporate weenie. They also have a bar and there was a Mexican food/taco truck parked right out front to make life easier for people who are hungry and like tacos. Oh, you don't like tacos? Pros: The outdoor space is beautiful and it is close to the train. You can 4/20 happily. Th venue is large enough for you to have breathing room to dance/talk. The bouncer is sweet but too judgmental. Partygoers are friendly and respectful. Cons: Watered down drinks!!! You must pay for your cover online with a service fee added. I've been out to a good many bars and clubs; I have never encountered water down drinks before. I previously thought this was a myth like alligators in the sewers. Water down drinks are a thing?! Pro Tip from a bartender (me): Here is what's up with a place that sells water down drinks... They are stealing from their customers. This is abysmal considering you can get whole bottle of wine for the price of a watered down cup of nonsense. I've been to shittier and smaller pubs/clubs that have stronger drinks. We're so grateful for having Erick and Ericka to support us along the way as we're new to events. We've had some mishaps along the way and probably sent a million emails in the process but had them every step of the way being helpful and patient with us while we worked out kinks. Given, this space is very DIY but as someone who basically searched all of NYC looking for an affordable space that would allow us to host our monthly party, believe me when I say booking doesn't get much easier than this. We appreciate the art in the backyard and the helpful sound guys who helped us through our projector issues. This space is very chill. It may be hard to find if you don't know what you're looking for. The drinks aren't too pricey (not quite city prices) and they have specials on the board. The lighting is nice and dim, the sound was pretty decent and the staff was cool. It's two rooms. There is minor sound bleed if the backdoor is left open or people keep walking through it (even though they aren't supposed to). There's also a backyard area for smoking or to just get some air with a few seats, a heater, and tons of graffiti and art. Three bathrooms; the first is the biggest of the three. The second has a broken lock so I steered clear of that one, and the third to the left is the smallest. The line goes fairly quickly. They do allow promoters to bring in their own stuff and stage the place so it may look different depending on the night you go. I had a good time and I will definitely be back. read more

Cool venue! I went to see my boyfriends friends rap group L.A.W.D.$ perform here on a Saturday night and I really had a good time. It looks like an abandoned warehouse - the only reason we knew it was there was because there were bouncers with the rope standing outside. As soon as you walk in you pay the guys (we paid $20 per person that night) and then you walk a little hall way to this big wide area that has a bar with stools and a stage. There's also another room where it's the "club" room - there was a DJ playing house music. Then there's also a coat check room (not mandatory) - it's $3 per coat. I think what I loved most about this place was the decor in the bathrooms - no joke. The bathrooms are filled with random stickers - it's awesome I might decorate my bathroom like that haha. But yeah, I really enjoyed this place - the performances + the vibe were really cool - L.A.W.D.$ killed it. The drinks were strong - sorry I can't review drink prices - I didn't pay for mine. New music spot in Bushwick with an attitude. But doesn't feel like the Bushwick we love in there. Rude and aggressive management, and over priced tickets. Drinks from unskilled bartenders. The music is hit or miss and it seams like their shows are not very well thought out. The reason I say they are rude is because I lost my jacket there, and when I went back the manager (who was literally foaming at the mouth) yelled at me to get out of his way while he was trying to take out the trash. When I told him about my coat he told me they probably threw it away like most of the "crap" people leave around. It was my favorite coat and I didn't need that kind of attitude. However, I went to a film screening that I did not experience the same negative vibes usually found here. They answered questions, accommodated walk throughs, and helped us stay organized. The day of was super seamless. Our family was happy and a lot of our guests said that we had the "most fun wedding ever." I am super grateful to Erick and Ericka for helping us have our dream "rock n' roll wedding." I dropped by the Paper Box on a long-ass bar crawl. This was one of the last stops, and my friend and I arrived around the end of a set. The crowd was sparse, but the venue was fun (and huge!). I've never in my life been treated so poorly in a place where I've been recommended and heard such great things about! To make matters worse, I didn't even enter the establishment, the security completely prevented me from entering all due to an UNOPENED Gatorade I put in my purse while I was walking up to the establishment. I threw my first event for my project here at paperbox november 7th, Nancy and Erick were super sweet and very helpful as I was a rookie in big event planning, they answered all questions and made anything that I wanted for the party possible. The venue it self is really beautiful and the backyard is a great area for the smokers. Bar is also gorgeous and bartenders were great. Alot of the people that attended the event also raved about the place. I honestly have no complaints, it was good vibes all night. Really great space! I went here for a pop up art saw and I found the space almost equally as interesting as the art. I could see it used for multiple types of events. If your are looking for an artsy space to host an event this is a great option. It's an alright space. I've been to much better venues but it is what it is. I have to say I've actually passed on seeing DJs I like because they were performing at this venue. I'm really not sure why I'm not a fan of this place; I think part of the reason could be that it feels too much like a basement. I wish I could give this place zero stars, never going back here again. My boyfriend and his friends booked out the place for an all day concert, basically friends, under 50 people. My friends and I were harassed by one of the bouncers, who literally followed me out of the venue once the concert was over, after being called names I complained to the staff and the bouncer pushed me and tried to hit my boyfriend, this is for no reason. After numerous threats we called the police, the staff literally had to hold this guy back from hitting us. Finally the bouncer was sent home and the owner apologized saying they had never hired the guy before. Bottom line is nobody goes out expecting to be attacked by a bouncer. Stay away from this crappy place. read more
