After the loss of Cod Almighty, I've been craving a new fish and chips joint in close enough proximity and my prayers have been answered. The chips are actually shaped like chips but have a thickness to them so that it's like biting into a chip with a mashed potato inside. I am a big fan of this, and it's not your standard french fry. The one thing that really sets this place a part is the fried calamari, shrimp and clams. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy their fish too, but I really enjoy the other seafood. The calamari were huge when I went there two Sundays in a row. The next thing that separates The Chippery apart from the previous competition is the sauces. Instead of just the standard cocktail and tarter sauce they have a bunch of others. I haven't been able to get them all yet, but the cilantro lime tarter is the current favorite. Definitely waiting to try the avocado sauce next. Seafood isn't the cheapest meal out there, that's for sure, but for the price you definitely get a good deal of food. Order delivery tonight and got the tsunami combo with fried Oreo and added Cole slaw and cilantro lime tartar sauce. The fish, calamari were so delicious and crispy. The shrimp was to-do and the clam strips were over fried and tasted like frozen. All the other pieces of seafood tasted fresh never frozen. This place is great. Stopped in on my way home from work (didn't feel like cooking). The gentleman that helped me asked if it was my first time, which it was, so he gave me a free order of dessert (fried Oreos) which was completely delicious. I had a good first time experience with the fish sandwich. Only complaint is cod is paper thin and I feel the big fluffy roll over powers it a little. The tartar sauce was really good and overall the flavor was on point. I will def be returning to try other things. read more

Stopped by for some fish & chips for lunch today. Ordered a triple fish/chips and a shrimp/chips entree. Lady at counter was nice. As soon as you order and pay, food is dropped in the fryer. Fry time was like 10 minutes. Food came to 23 and change. Did not order a drink. Got it to go. Was offered ketchup/tartar/hot sauce. Served in a foam clamshell, sliced on top to let the steam out so not to soggy. Amounts were generous. For the fish 3 nice white fish fillets and lots of potato. For the shrimp like 6 ot 7 medium shrimp and lots of potato. One entree will fill you up well. Two will be too much. I liked the batter but mine was soggy by the time I got home should of put it in the oven to tighten it up, would of liked it really crispy. So much better than fast food fish sandwiches. Will try again and they have other stuff on the menu like clams, calamari, etc. read more

We went to the Chippery often years ago when it was in Fanwood. It was soooo good. Then they disappeared. Recently we saw that they reopened in Union. Excitedly we went there yesterday, expecting the same delicious fish. What a huge disappointment! First of all, the old Chippery had atmosphere and an upbeat vibe. The new Chippery is now located in a run-down former Chinese joint and is dead as a doornail. We wanted just fish, no chips (dietary restrictions). We were not offered a substitute for the chips. Also, they charge $1 extra per piece if you want cod instead of basafish (which we never hear of). We were told we would get tartar sauce. When we got home and opened up the environmentally unfriendly styrofoam containers there was no tartar sauce, just 4 small pieces of very dry overcooked flavorless fish. Terrible and very disappointing. We do not recommend The Chippery in Union and will not return. read more

Came here for my birthday because I was craving fish and chips, and I was not disappointed. Friendly staff and crunchy, crispy fish. My wife had the chicken, which she enjoyed. I got the one piece fish and it had the kind of crunch they put the microphone up to in a food travel show. Plenty of chips, so one piece was a good fit for me, though I could see myself eating two if we hadn't wanted dessert. The fried Oreos were a little chewy, but remarkably not too heavy, considering they were deep fried cookies. We'll be back! read more

First the cashier was extremely rude and cold. She was a younger lady. I approached the counter said hello she says nothing. I asked her if she could take my order since the person in front wasn't ready and was just looking. She put up her finger to tell me to wait. The worse part was when I paid. I gave her the money in her hand but she threw my money on the counter. The same man after me gave her money on the counter. She waited to give him his money in his hand. And the food was terrible. The food was fresh and fantastic! I tried the fish and the clam strips. I usually save the chips for last, but for some reason, I couldn't stop eating them. They were sprinkled lightly with Old Bay seasoning, not greasy at all and soo yummy. I took my order to go, and when I arrived home, thanks to the vented box, everything was still crispy!! I wish I could stay anonymous. The food was good, but took forever. Second time there. Probably the last, now that there is a Branchburg location. I told them I was going to stay but not finish it so they packed it to go. I ordered soup and an order. I waited 30 minutes and lost my patience, as I watched a dozen customers walk in, order and get their food before me. I was not given the soup while I waited what seemed like an eternity. I asked for it, 30 minutes after I ordered, and for my money back. I was not given my money back. They sold out of the sauce I wanted in the time I waited for my order. I paid extra for a second sauce and was given the wrong one. Then the batter was raw, and the calamari was under cooked and chewy. It looked like the picture; dark clams, light shrimp, but the batter was raw. The soup was an inch below the top. I was not given a spoon. Everything has sugar. That is not my taste. Who wants extra sugar in hush puppies and chips? I don't. They were also out of cole slaw, so it was all fried except for the small portion of soup. I'd say half portion, but that would be a slight exaggeration. Disappointed. If I didn't have to wait so long, I might feel differently. I"m glad they're busy, but would advise to call ahead or expect to wait too long for fried food that cooks in minutes. read more
