Love finding these hole in the wall type eateries. Was greeted immediately as soon as I walked in. You can either give your order to the owner. Or enter it into the touch screen tablet. I ordered the shrimp and chips and a one fish on the side and coleslaw. Everything was delicious and the batter was very tasty. I added some old bay seasoning when I got home and the coleslaw was so refreshing. There is plenty of parking. They do have lunch specials so I'll definitely stop in next time. There's plenty of seating so you can eat in or take out. Looking forward to trying the other items on the menu like the tacos. Oh and there's plenty of locations available in NJ and NYC. If you're looking for some delicious fish and chips then stop on by.

I got a chicken tenders fish combo with slaw & chips. Everything was made to order. I live in Westfield so a quick drive home with my food. Everything was amazing! Fresh slaw, crunchy chicken & fish tender inside and great flavor. Thanks to my Yelp bro, Sean for the recommendation. Support local & small businesses always.

    Calamari and Chipps

The food here is good. The fish is tasty, although sometimes too salty. I recommend the calamari and any of the fish fillets or fish sliders. It's a grab and go place, with very few seating. The service was quick. I wish their chips were well seasoned.

    Clam Down

Went tonight for first time and honestly the reviews are a bit mixed. I ordered their Clam Down dish, which is an order of fish and chips with fried clams added. The fish itself was excellent. Perfectly fried with a generous portion of their chips. However the clams not so good. Very overcooked with mostly small pieces. I would definitely recommend the fish and chips, but pass on the clams.

If you're looking to get your grease on you won't here. Sure fish and chips are cooked in oil but it was not greasy! The paper was not wet at all! The fish was perfectly cooked served with tartar sauce. The chips were hand cut potato disks and delicious! I ate there and waited only about 5 minutes, cooked to order. I can't imagine getting this meal takeaway, it wouldn't be the same.

Super thin slice of fish hidden in the batter

Gotta downgrade my rating here... ordered a 10 piece of fish and chips. I had 3 fish, and of the 3, 2 were paper thing (basically almost completely batter). Given that the fish price is almost $4 per fish this did not seem reasonable. Also due to the fact that I was essentially eating just batter, it didn't taste like fish at all, and also felt extremely greasy when I had finished eating. On top of this, the prices on the website are actually lower than what they charge. On the positive side, there are generous with the tartar sauce.

    Lobster Bisque
    Luis R.

Let's start off with Bisque. It had decent flavor but where's the lobster. I know its a bisque but at least let me feel a couple of lumps in there. Mac and cheese bites were ok. The Mac didn't have much flavor but there batter was on point. So now my shrimpnation dish. With a name like shrimpnation I'd expect either jumbo shrimp or more that 6 small pieces. Now the shrimp had good flavor(but its kinda hard to mess up shrimp) and a very good cook and the chips were good as well. The fish not so much. Batter had no seasoning at all and the fish is bland. Had they used the batter from the Mac it would have been better.

Single Fish and Chipps with side of clam strips

I checked this place out. Haven't ate at a Chippery in yearssss. Tried the single fish - comes with fries. Added side of fried clams . Fish was over fried for me. But I liked the clam strips. Fries are circular and had a light old bay seasoning. Good place if you want a fast "fish and chips" meal. Staff was nice .

    One Piece
    Auria C.

I ordered a One Piece (1 piece of fried whiting & chips) thru GrubHub & was absolutely appalled when it arrived. It was super crunchy, thin & cold. I called to complain & Semi was super helpful. Apparently I accidentally got someone else's extra crispy order that had been sitting on the counter for a while waiting to be picked. Fast forward, I got a new order, it was fresh, hot & delicious. Thank you, Semi, for turning around a horrible experience. We need more of this type of service.

I'd say we were successful in that regard, and this is probably one of the top two places I've been now in town, along with Garlic Rose. Even if you didn't have access to the menu, this just LOOKS like an upper-class steakhouse - lots of darker interior colors with deliberate use of lighting almost like the aisles in a movie theater. We did the responsible thing and made 6:30pm reservations, though the restaurant was relatively empty when we first got there (it filled up for sure during our dinner). We were immediately seated and attended to, which was a pleasant recurring theme for our experience. On the booze front, we each got an Old Fashioned, which was specifically cited on the cocktail menu, and a bottle of Daou Cab Sauvignon to share (I let my chum take the lead on that selection, which I think was influenced by the strong reviews on the Vivino app - a recommend if you're into that sort of thing). The Old-Fashioned was decent; I'm always pleased when the de facto bourbon is Angel's Envy. I'm not crazy about vermouth, which I always think gives off shoe leather vibes, but I did like the smoky profile on this one. Not bad at all, but I liked the bottle of wine better. We decided to split the Grilled Octopus app, which came with seasoned potatoes, olives and tomatoes. This was arguably the weakest part of the meal. The octopus was a little tough/rubbery and the accompanying potatoes to me were very much needed and better, frankly, than the designated star of the show here. I'm not an olive person but my chum's comment there was they were too overwhelming, taste-wise. Noted. We also got a side of parmesan truffle garlic steak fries, which I didn't have too many of because I was distracted by all of the other options on the table, but would totally get again. For entrees, it felt morally proper to hit up the cattle (when in Rome). I went with the Braised Short Ribs, which is one of my go-tos if it's on the menu. Pretty good - VERY tender and literally falling off the bone. I'd say about 20% of it was too fatty for me, and I pawned that section off on my chum, but the other 80% was primo. She got the Filet Mignon Oscar style (which my computer wanted to autocorrect to Oscars, thinking it was the umpteenth time I was typing something about the Academy Awards), and was very pleased by it. Not mindblowingly amazing but solidly above average across the board. I'm not sure why we ordered dessert at this point other than to ensure I had something else to munch on the following day, but we did that too. I got the Cheesecake w/ Marionberry Compote. This was just okay for me. Taste-wise, the cheesecake seemed a little off for my palate; maybe a little too tart? It didn't seem as milky as other cheesecakes, which doesn't necessarily mean it was bad, but wasn't my kind of cheesecake. The compote was also just okay, both in the moment and as a leftover the following day. Maybe I'm just used to getting this dessert with strawberries and compotes that are similar to that type of fruit, but I just didn't think the compote and cake meshed as well. Debatable though. There's room for improvement but this is a strong entry in the Cranford gastro scene, such as it is.

For appetizers, we got zucchini chips, fried calamari and mussels. The calamari was fried too hard and it had a very salty, spicy Chilean type sauce over it. The zucchini chips were thinly sliced, lightly battered with Parmesan cheese sprinkled over them. They were decent but nothing to write home about. In fact, after having about six or seven of the zucchini chips I began to experience heartburn from the grease. For entrees, my husband had the chicken parm. He said it was too thick and should have been flattened more before frying. It was also very breaded. My brother-in-law ordered the chicken and waffles and he said the chicken tasted day old so after having a bite of one piece of the chicken he pushed the chicken aside and called it a day. I called the waiter over and informed him about the chicken tasting day old. He didn't try to change it out or take it off the bill or get a manager. He just apologized by saying I'm sorry. My crab Mac and Cheese was decent. It wasn't seasoned the way I would have liked but the huge, plentiful chunks of crab made up for that. I ate a third of my dish and packed the rest for home where I will doctor it up to my taste. I've never been to this particular restaurant before. The only reason we came today is because my brother-in-law was here on business and staying at a hotel in the area.

The food is so creative, fresh, and delicious, the service is attentive and knowledgeable and consistent (not the norm in the suburbs), and we love the ambiance. It was a gorgeous night to sit outside, but we opted for our favorite - bar seats to watch the action. It's hard to find this level of consistency and creativity even in NYC, but to have it right here in Maplewood is so wonderful. So many restaurants in the suburbs rely on frozen, pre-made items from large restaurant supply chains that finding innovative cooking completely from scratch is a real challenge. In a sea of mediocre restaurants, Perla lives up to its name: a true gem! We have been so impressed by the daily specials this summer. We started out with a scallop crudo with yuzu, jalapeno, and shallots that is my favorite crudo right now. We followed that with the new shrimp tostada and I'm only sorry we didn't order two. Later in our meal, I spied a couple at the other end of the bar who did it right: the wife took one bite and immediately ordered a second one so that she wouldn't have to share. This is the second time we've had the tomato salad with olives, shiso, and white balsamic and I can't get over the flavor combination - it's so unexpected and addictive. We can't pass up the broiled oysters with garlic butter, Calabrian chili, and crispy shallots - a dish I was obsessed with the moment I tried it at a pop-up event before the restaurant even existed. Then we had the broiled branzino with lemon, capers, and a watercress salad - again, the only mistake was not ordering two! We were actually down the shore yesterday, but came home because we were craving this dish. We finished off our meal with anchovy toast, which our favorite dessert paired with a crisp Txakolina. It's four pieces of toasted baguette with a generous spread of really good butter topped with one piece of salt-cured anchovy and one boqueron (a pickled anchovy). I can't recommend this dish highly enough, it is perfectly balanced! We love a BYOB, but it is such a luxury that we can order right from our phones at the restaurant from a local wine shop (Lum's Cellars). It's a curated list that has some really fantastic options that all go so well with the cuisine. We started with an Alberiño and then ordered the Txakolina. No notes! We can't wait for our next meal at Perla.
