Best damn potato skin appetizer I've ever had. I'm pretty sure someone actually sliced up fresh potatoes in the back for our order. That said, my friend and I ordered the Dublin Chicken Pasta and Bangers 'n' Mash. The pasta was $12 and pretty good. The Bangers and Mash (and free bread) reminded me of food I'd eaten in Ireland. The mashed potatoes were great, I'd bet they were made from boiled potatoes and not bags or boxes. All in all, priced right and certainly worthy of a stop. Their website has the menu. read more

We have a friend who was born and raised in Ireland and swears by this place. The soda bread is made daily by one of the owners (who is indeed from Ireland). It's some of the best bread I have ever eaten...EVER. And I eat a lot of bread! There aren't many options for a vegetarian, but I was able to ask for a pasta dish without meat. It wasn't really that good, but I'm still giving it four stars because this place is Irish not Italian and I really can't judge it on the quality of their pasta! The prices are very reasonable. Doesn't take long for this place to fill up. But it does so because it's good. I love their Sheppard Pie...and if you like a little heat, the Blade Meat Sandwich is great. Chieftain Pub is an Irish pub with a homestyle feel. The bread is made in house and is delicious. Our hostess even had a legit Irish accent, which was quite surprising - in a good way! Plenty of miscellaneous paraphernalia adorned the walls and the bar was beautiful. There were many dinner options, and I found it hard to choose one. I choose the Crispy Shrimp Wraps for an appetizer and the Boom Boom Burger (Boom Boom hot sauce on the side). Delicious! They had a great selection of $7 wine glasses, and the pour was GENEROUS. At the end of the night, my friend and I wanted to split a glass, and they were happy to oblige. Good eats! read more

Boring and bland, The Cheiftan brings to you a limited assortment of mediocre fare for the price you would pay for such food. You can wash the dismal food down with a cool, overly carbonated beer in a hot glass, your choice of a dismal, limited selection of bottled and tap faves. Twice I went. Twice it sucked. I wanted so bad to give this place a good rating but it is not in the stars. It's not a pisshole by any standard, Generations took the cake ont that one and has since shriveled and flaked off. (Thank God!!!) That place was a haven for drunks who lived within walking distance. Walking distance not because of a sense of responsibility by not driving drunk, but by driving drunk and losing their licence. You can chuck a rock at all the halfway houses from there. While I've never been to the Chieftain on a weekend, I've been there Monday nights numerous times. The decor is interesting, a conversation piece. This Irish pub has a great atmosphere, and though the it might take a few tries to get the waitress's attention, they are pleasant and generally willing to help. They have a great beer selection and pub fare. The bread they bring to the table is delicious, too, you'll want to ask for more. Go on Monday nights for the $14 steamer buckets. I could never finish a whole bucket myself, they're great to share. I also heard that they got approval for an outdoor patio in the back, which I'll definitely be back to check out! read more

Here is one of those times I wish there was a 3 1/2 star option, because that is what the Chieftain is. 4 star pub, 3 star restaurant. I have eaten here a few times, gotten some apps, a shrimp dish and few other basics and they were pretty good, perhaps slightly overpriced. The bar on weekends is a blast, perfectly poured Guinness, live music; authentic decor on the walls makes for a good time. Limited bar seating though, and it often fills up (and clears out) pretty quickly. Worth a trip to head over, get some pretty authentic Irish food in a great pub atmosphere. read more

Great pub with a decent atmosphere, fairly good pub fare, and excellent service. The beer selection is good and they serve it the correct way: expect to wait for your Guinness, expect the beer to be slightly colder than cellar temp, and expect the bartender/waitress to be busy, but efficient and friendly. If you come when it's a peak meal time, you might have to wait for a table. If you come during St. Pat's Day, you might have to wait until next year. I feel the pain of the reviewer that had a bad burger, I've had a couple overcooked ones here. However, the fish and chips, blade meat sandwich, and of course - steamers are excellent. The only problem I have with the steamers is that they seem to be $1 more every time I come in...though they haven't gotten too expensive to be worth it so far. read more

I recently dined at The Chieftain for the first time this May. The outside of the restaurant is not exactly appealing to the eye, but the inside is a different story. The inside of the pub has your typical Irish decor; very charming. Initial review of the menu had me a bit confused. The prices were pretty expensive for pub fare. After reviewing the menu and the specials I decided to try their corned beef and cabbage. For an Irish pub I did not think it was that great. The meal came with your standard corned beef, cabbage, and some type of mashed potato - there were no carrots. The potatoes seemed to be smashed without any flavorings; leaving them flavor-less. The corned beef and cabbage were just okay. My boyfriend got the fish and chips. He seemed to like them, but I thought they were kinda soggy and again .... flavor-less. The bread that was served with the meal was good! It seemed homemade. I'm willing to go back and try something different, such as the steak tips. I just wish they weren't so pricey! We've been here multiple times either for lunch or dinner. This time we had dinner which was corn beef and cabbage. It was made a little different then what we cook. Usually we use whole potatoes but they use mash. Still tasted good and would have it again. read more

Visited the Chieftan Pub for the first time tonight. This is not a large restaurant, but that just gives it a more authentic feel for a European-style pub. Even though I don't drink, I almost felt out of place for not having a Guinness in front of me! The server was very nice, and tolerated my "newbie" questions and answered each one thoughtfully. Eventually I decided on the Corned Beef and Cabbage platter, which also came with mashed potatoes with a hint of a white gravy. I have seen others on here complain about the mashed potatoes being "lumpy." This is also what is called "homestyle" mashed potatoes. I really don't care for potatoes that have the consistency of pudding, so I enjoyed the ones here. The corned beef and cabbage were amazing! The cabbage had a wonderfully seasoned flavor, and was not over-cooked. The flavor of the corned beef was phenomenal. This is a location that is definitely worth the time to visit. Prices are very reasonable, portions are huge, and the quality is very good. read more

The Chieftain is a great Irish pub. Standard pub fare is served with a decent beer list (always a good variety on draft). Fair prices for solid food. I love the Shepherd's Pie. My husband said the Stuffies are awesome. I've also had the Fish & Chips and really enjoyed them too. The staff is nice, they often have live music, and the atmosphere is boisterous and fun. I've only been to the Chieftain when it is packed, but worth the wait. We wish they were open on Sunday! read more

If you are looking for a nice little Irish pub this is the place! The welcome is warm from the Irish hostess, the Guinness is just the right temperature. The music gives it the perfect atmosphere. Food, well they have all the typical Irish fare which I will be back to taste but I went with a great big bowl of mussels which were wonderfully sweet and not over powered by the garlic. The stuffies and chowder was my next course and I loved it. The stuffies weren't too bready. Lots of clams which I like. The clam chowder was wonderful and creamy with lots of clans too. I liked this place- didn't love it. That's why 3 stars. We went here after not being able to decide what to do for dinner on a Saturday night... It was packed, which was a good sign, but a little weird because it was late In the evening and we still had to wait a half hour for a table... The hostess is GREAT! Super friendly, and I'm pretty sure she's actually from Ireland, so there's a nice bit of authenticity there haha. Food was good, waiter was good... Nothing exceptional. The atmosphere was extremely crowded/cramped and extremely loud! That was a major turn off for me... I would go back, but more likely just for a drink, not dinner. read more

I was very disappointed in the layout of this facility. While there are ramps for wheelchair access there is only one table that is suitable for a guest in a wheelchair. Every table in the bar is a high top. And the main dining room is a step down. We will not be back to the restaurant due to these reasons. read more

This place really SUCKS! Last Friday myself and two buddies went in for a good prime rib dinner and a few drinks/beers after a long week at work. We sat at the bar, hoping for a little relaxation and reasonable food. I think the kid behind the bar was the owners son. It was obvious by his snotty, arrogant and entitled attitude that he never earned an opportunity in his life. A real punk. First, my drink was small and watery. I asked for a shot on the side for which I would pay, and I was refused as if being scolded by my mother. It was my first of the week, but you would have thought I was a drunk and causing a scene. Not the case. Ok, I thought. No problem. I ordered the prime rib. I was expecting beef, but I'm sure I got horse meat. Tuff, overcooked and all the flavor of an old boot. My friends' not much better. Stay away. They are just going through the motions. Nasty food, nastier people. read more

It's been a long time since I've been here. The food was good. (My mom had fish n chips, my sister had the baked haddock. They both enjoyed meals) I had the chowder, which was very bland. Unfortunate as the food is good but owner/manager is extremely rude. Not my fault they sat two in a large booth just as it was getting busy on st pats. Owner stared at us during our entire meal, came over to ask if we were going to take our drinks to the other side which I guess was ok. Replying no we're just finishing these then leaving must not have been good enough as a minute later he walked by and dropped new place settings to turn the table over on our table as we were still sitting there. I've ate here a few times as the food has always been good, could make excuses for owner as it must be a stressful day but sorry, you are in a service industry, don't make customers feel they're part of a factory assembly line. Had some guests over yesterday evening and none of us had eaten dinner. To the Yelp machine! Settled on the Chieftain and I have to say, I'm very surprised this place has maintained a fairly high rating... Now the overall experience wasn't horrible and I actually had a hard time choosing between two or three stars, but I settled upon two solely because ""Meh, I've experienced better". While the server was pleasant and attentive, the food was lackluster. I don't think anyone at the table necessarily hated their meals, but it definitely left quite a bit to be desired. My girlfriend and I both ordered baked stuffed fish entrees; one haddock and one sole. I'm at least glad to say that the main part of these entrees was pretty good. With tender, juicy fish and a scrumptious stuffing, the squeeze of lemon meshed wonderfully with it's flavors. My one gripe would be that I really wish there was some other texture, just to break the monotony of the soft fish and stuffing. A quick broil and/or a finishing-touch of crispy breadcrumbs would have gone a long way. Aside from that, and maybe her french fries, the rest was a bit disappointing. I have no problem with frozen vegetables (I eat them quite a bit), but I really don't expect a restaurant's "vegetable medley" to consist of, what' seems to be, a frozen blend of carrots, cauliflower and broccoli. Completely unseasoned, they were just sad. Give me some roasted and seasoned vegetables! A lot like the veggies, my mashed potatoes seemed a poor attempt and similarly lacked in seasoning. On top of the blandness, they were a bit too thick, to the point that I had to hold the bowl down as I scooped them out or risk picking up the entire dish . Having pub in it's name, maybe it's a great place to pour down some brews and munch on a burger. Unfortunately, this experience didn't leave me particularly impressed and I really have little urge to stop back in. read more

I am so glad I found this place through here. My wife and I were going to the Wrentham outlets and wanted a good place to eat that wasn't a crappy chain. This was the best short drive for lunch we ever took. The food is cheap and soo good. I was disappointed that they were out of clam strips but our waitress suggested I try the pot roast. If I weren't married already, I would have proposed to her after the meal. Their pot roast was incredible. It was also HUGE. I got two big meals out of it. My wife got the fish and chips and it was also large and very good. We will be going back every time we go to the outlets. read more

I grew up in Plainville, yet for some reason I always forget about the Chieftain. I need to make it a point to remember that this place is great! We ended up here last night after a failed attempt at getting dinner at Doherty's in Pawtucket (it was at least an hour wait and we were starving). We took a quick drive back up 95 to try and find something near home. I was trying to think if there were any other Irish pubs, and remembered the Chieftain! They have a good selection of draft beer, and MAGNERS ON TAP, *SQUEAL*! I will definitely be going here more often now that I've realized they serve liquid happiness! We were seated fairly quickly and our orders were promptly taken by our server (a bit too quickly even... we had to send her away twice because we still hadn't decided). We got an order of buffalo wings for an app, which were quite delicious! Boyfriend got fish and chips, which he seemed pleased with, and I got the bangers and mash. They were probably the closest thing I've found to the bangers and mash I had in Ireland. In other words, they were fantastic! I didn't have them during this visit, but I feel obligated to comment on the bucket of steamers at the Chieftain. They serve the best steamers I have ever eaten in my life here! I'm not sure if they still do a special price on them on Mondays, but I'd say they are well worth it even at full price! They are perfectly seasoned and simply to-die-for! My trip to the ladies room was unexpectedly very pleasant! As I squeezed my way through the bar area, I saw that the restrooms were located in a little hallway next to the back entrance. I thought to myself "I hope it's not freezing in there!" The gender signs were in Gaelic, and I pondered them briefly before realizing one had a picture of a little boy peeing in a bucket and the other, a girl in a bathtub. I chose the door to the right. It's a single occupant, kept extremely clean, with a very warm heater right next to the toilet. Toasty buns! The toilet paper dispenser was also located right over the heater, making it pleasantly warm! Do they make toilet paper warmers? If not, they should!!! Although, Boyfriend reported that the men's room was quite the opposite of toasty, as someone had left the window open and it was close to 0 degrees outside. But they're tougher and don't have to expose their bare bottoms to the elements whilst peeing, at least. Note to self: go to the Chieftain more often!!! read more

Made a return trip hear after taking a bit of a break. I ordered fish and chips with a cup of chowder. All were very good. My wife got the stuffed chicken breast with real mashed and gravy. She really enjoyed it. The bartender waited on us. Very attentive. Greeted with a smile thanked for our patronage. All this while they were pretty busy. Well done! read more
