This was an awful experience I would not recommend this place unless you have a small party and ample amount of time. I came to The Chef at 11am and added my name to the wait list. We had a party of 6, so I expected it to be a while. I was told the wait would be 35 minutes, No big deal . 45 minutes later I went to ask when my party would be called, and the server said we are up next after a large table is available. Shortly after this interaction we saw a large group of 8+ leave. The host promptly seated 2 other parties of 5+ before we were seated. One of those groups had literally just arrived and were served before us. We ended up leaving before being seated because of the utter disrespect for our time. I wasted an hour standing waiting to eat. My girlfriend was scheduled to work, and she didn't have enough time to eat before her shift. I left angry and hungry. Do not go here if you are on a time crunch, or on a tight schedule. However, If you're looking to have your time disrespected then this is a great place to come and stand outside in the hot humid Kansas summers for an hour! read more

The atmosphere is good and the staff are nice. The food... it's, alright. Maybe. Been here a number of times and I cannot seem to relate to them that I do not like my hash browns raw. They're served as a patty, crispy on the top and bottom, raw in the middle. Not good. Asking for crispy still gets you raw hash browns. Proven more than once. You're safe with basic eggs and bacon. Tried a salmon Bennie today. "No Coast" should had deterred this decision but it sounded good. Salmon was SUPER dry. Even more disappointing was the egg in the eggs Bennie were over-medium. Absolutely nothing can beat a good breakfast place and this is one of them. If you come on a weekend you're likely to have a pretty long wait but things slow down during the week. I got the pesto frittata and it did not disappoint. The eggs were a little bit bland but the pesto and goat cheese combo was delicious. This is a very popular breakfast spot and I can see why. I was visiting the area and looked up the top spots in Manhattan, KS. This was one! My brother and I had breakfast the next morning. There was a bit of a line, but the wait wasn't horrible. Plus, they offer you something to drink while you wait. The seating includes tables, high tables, and bar seating. I had the Pesto Frittata (Goat cheese and tomatoes baked with three eggs and topped with pesto) and my brother had the Smothered Burrito (breakfast burrito covered in gravy). Let me first start off by saying that from the outside looking in, 'The Chef' looks like a quaint and respectable establishment that serves above-average food for public consumption. I have sadly never been proven so wrong in my entire existence and this attempt on my life has left me scarred and deformed. Upon entering the Chef, the wafting aroma was reminiscent of cow manure and their choice of music was beyond atrocious. Music that people with 4 teeth listen to while sitting in a rocking chair strumming their banjo drinking Moonshine from their mason jar. I typically try an entree that's more on the conservative side when first dining at a new establishment so I ordered a simple cheese omelette unbeknownst to me that I was about to be served a dish that showed shades of a 10 layer lasagna (AND WHY DOES AN OMELTTE COME WITH A SIDE OF SOUR CREAM?!) And may I also inquire as to why the home fries on the side were so spicy that I will now have to spend half of my upcoming work day in the bathroom stall? A co-worker of mine ordered the breakfast pizza and when I saw scrambled eggs as a pizza topping, I could just envision my deceased ancestors from Sicily rolling around in their grave in disgust thinking that hillbillies from the Midwest have destroyed the most sacred of all cuisine. Overall, I can't say my experience was pleasant as my palette is now permanently damaged and I will now require professional counseling from this experience that I will have to pay out of pocket. This place is AMAZING. Definitely my favorite breakfast place in town! The Chuck Norris breakfast consists of 2 huge pancakes, turkey, pork and chorizo patty sausage on the side. These pancakes were the yummiest pancakes I have ever laid my tongue on!! They must sprinkle some cinnamon or something inside the batter, b/c it's got a certain taste to it. You can order the pancakes a la carte as well. They're just $2.25 each and one is plenty enough for me! This morning when we went, we tried the chicken fried steak and eggs. The gravy they use for their chicken fried steak is an orangey goodness that words cannot describe. SO GOOD! And their hashbrowns are like no other either. They are made just PERFECT. Crunchy on the outside and warm goodness on the inside. Parts of it is so soft, it's almost like a mashed potato hasbrown. It's amazing. They also had toast and jelly with the dish... and I mean.. how can a restaurant make toast and jelly amazing?! Their jelly is liquid jelly that is put in a little dish for you to dip your toast in. Follow that up by a huge bin of toys for my 3 year old to play with while we wait. Now we are seated by what only can be described as the most polite, happy staff on the planet. I asked for a recommendation and was directed toward the dish that recently won an award from the Food Network, a chorizo frittata. My son got a pancake and my wife a salmon Benedict. Being the self-respecting Americans on vacation that we are, of course we got drinks. My classy wife got a Bloody Mary and I ordered the Manmosa, Busch light beer mixed with OJ. It was the perfect way to start the meal. Food came out pretty quick considering the restaurant was packed. And again I'll say, holy frittata! The food looked and tasted amazing. My son got a pancake larger than his head infused with cinnamon in a way that makes you have to pause after a bite and say, wow. The eggs Benedict tasted as good as they looked and my frittata, well, let's just say I don't think I'll order one again anywhere else so I can preserve my memory of how this one tasted. You may think I'm being overly positive about this experience but please understand, there was not a single part about this experience that did not amaze me. Well done, the chef! The first time I went there, the place was just about to close. They're open very early and closes at 3 p.m. This morning, I'm glad that I finally went. The wait was a bit long, i.e. about 20-30 minutes. It's a fairly small place, but it's quite new. Although they have counter seats, those are also on the waiting list. You can only be seated there by the hostess, who was very friendly. She'll get you drinks as you wait... standing, if the 'waiting seats/ bench' are full. The decor is very contemporary and fun. You will pretty much be seated wherever a table becomes available. Of all the breakfast places I've been to around Manhattan (and Junction City), this place has some of the best-looking waitresses, that is, not only are they pleasant to look at, they look... clean. They're also very nice and energetic. I ordered steak and eggs benedict with homestyle potatoes and a side of French toast. (Oh, they serve Bloody Mary, Screwdrive and a host of other drinks I didn't care for, just so you know.) I also got a small glass of V8 juice and a glass of water. By the way, you can actually substitute the potatoes with an order of fresh fruits. The food was... GOOD!!! I am sure I was beaming from ear to ear as soon as I took the first bite! The hollondaise sauce went very well with the eggs cooked sunny side up. I like the yolk a little runny and that's just how they made my eggs. The seasoning on the potato slices were tasty although the smaller pieces had too much seasoning and tasted a bit salty, but it didn't bother me at all. The steak was a bit chewy, but oh-so juicy. I didn't even need any steak sauce. The French toast was so fluffy. I was told that they bake it instead of cooking it on a pan. Great idea. I cleaned both my plates. I'm sure I'm not wrong in assuming that the owner must have thought right down to the smallest detail when she considered starting her business. She must have had fun buying the utensils, dinnerware, etc., because I sure do like the salt and pepper shakers on the table. It's also not crowded with bottles of condiments that I wouldn't dare to touch. In fact, they would fill little cups with the sauces you need,with the food you ordered. I will definitely go back to try something else on the menu. Bonus: The waitress actually asked if we wanted coffee in a to-go cup!!! I don't think any of the breakfast places in Chicago, Manhattan, etc I've been too had ever done that to customers! I went to The Chef for breakfast and ordered the special which was a Chorizo Scramble. This dish was on the spicy side but I don't mind that and it was very good. It had pinto beans, lots of cheese and egg with the chorizo meat mixed all together and it was served with flour tortillas. Delicious! In looking over the menu there are many egg dishes to choose from and one of them is called The Chuck Norris. This dish has a chorizo patty, turkey and pork sausage, two pancakes and syrup on the side. Sounds like a hearty meal. They also serve omelet and frittata dishes as well as salads, sandwiches, and burgers. They also have a kids menu too. The atmosphere at The Chef is charming and I will be going again before I go back home to Texas. I highly recommend trying out The Chef it is a winner. read more

Time for a new adventure. Manhattan, Kansas has a nice little downtown and the food so far in the area is been great. This place is no exception. Came here for breakfast. Friendly staff, good coffee and an interesting menu. I decided to go for the Florentine Frittatta with mushrooms, and spinach and cheese sauce and smoked salmon. Very good. One of the best breakfast dishes I've ever had. Salmon had a great smokey flavor and the sauce was not too overwhelming. Food came out fast and hot. Only little complaint is the upcharge for the side of fruit. I asked the server if I can have something instead of potatoes and she said I can have anything I want, but didn't tell me about the upcharge. After I got my bill and asked about it, she said, yeah it's an upcharge for the fruit. She didn't say, oh sorry, I forgot to mention it or something along those lines. It was 2.75 extra, which isn't a big deal, but that needs to be mentioned when someone asks about substitution options. Overall, it's a great place and I would return and try something else on the menu, which as I said seems interesting, and I didn't really check out lunch options. Saw these guys on ABC's Taste of the Town and went for breakfast. 1.5hr wait was beyond ridiculous, but the food proved to be the best breakfast I've had in a long time. Loved their Eggs Benedict. Shared Bananas Foster pancakes and admired my friend's French Toast. Everything was fresh and tasty. Service was quick and friendly. It's just a shame you have to wait so long. Plus the aroma from the food outside was intoxicating. Wait time was about 20-30 minutes. We had about 7 people in our group and was able to get a corner booth to fit us in. Walking in impressed me. Place looks small from the outside but fairly roomy inside. The decor and style was bright and looked great. All the food I saw looked well presentable. Majority of the group ordered the breakfast burrito, recommended by my friend. Had the home style potatoes to go with it. The burrito was drinched with gravy and sausage. The food use very fresh ingredients and was uniform. For the portion size it was plenty. The orange juice I had was fresh as well andnot the typical concentrated stuff you would get else where. Overall consensus of the group rated this place high. I would rank this place as the best place for breakfast on the east side of town.
