Had given up on this place a few years ago after a couple of not so great experiences and decided to try again a couple of weeks ago. This isn't a place you go to for great service, the server is pretty aloof, they don't check on tables often especially if you are seated out side however we really enjoyed our endive salad and the mussels with a side of fries. Exactly two weeks later we went back and the food was awful. This is the problem with this place, it's incredibly inconsistent, from the size and glass they use for the same beverage from one time to the next, to the bread they serve with musselS (first time it was toasted, this time it was not). The mussels must've had about 100 rosemary leaves in the sauce. The taste was completely overpowering and yet they were somehow super bland at the same time. Please encourage your staff to have consistency in how they prep the food! Once again on a castello plan hiatus. read more

The place itself is nice as well as the food, the problems arise when the manager can't put his ego aside and believes he is in some kind of army camp, very weird person with a bad attitude towards customers when the customer don't agree with him. Save yourself an ugly time and stay away from this place, at least until they train his manager properly. read more

Our last night of the event and also our last night in New York City, we were heading over to the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn for our event. I put in the address and searched on Yelp for the highest rated restaurant. The Castello Place showed up immediately. Without hesitation, I I booked a reservation for all four of us. When we arrived, we got a great seat right in the front so that we could people watch and observe the streets of Brooklyn while we dined. We started off with cocktails, they had a lot of cute specials. There was indoor and outdoor seating. The entire place is adorable and carries history, Hence the name. The girls are all young and hip. I felt terrible because I had to send back my martini. It was too dry. Too heavy on the vermouth, but they were really sweet about it and made another one which was delicious. There was a lavender infused margarita that my colleague tried that was also delicious. Not too sweet. There is a good selection of craft beer and also happy hour prices that we ordered off of. There was a lot of different appetizers including the pickled deviled eggs that we each enjoyed. I got the nicoise salad and everybody else ordered tacos, and a burger, and the gnocchi. Overall They offer a great selection of food in variety and we left very happy. Prices are definitely reasonable especially if you order off the happy hour menu. I would come back if ever in the area again, for sure. read more

This cozy, dimly lit wine bar has a well-edited wine list and appealing menu. I tried the Sylvian Soux, Domaine Pechigo "La Mothe," a blend of Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, and Mauzac, which was golden and sweet. I only had an appetite for snacks / appetizers, so I tried the house pickles, which was more of a salad with cucumbers, carrot shavings, and dill. The meats and cheeses come on cute cutting boards with excellent, fresh bread and accompaniments such as cinnamon apples. The three-course prix fixe with wine pairings for $30 sounded like a great deal. Service was excellent. read more

Held off the first time on reviewing even though we never got our food after an hour and a half and they legit forgot to put the order in twice. They were then rude to us for being agitated, and just told us the food was not coming. We thought, hey, it's covid times we will give it another shot. Went again and it was really terrible again. We were 4 adults and our entrees came 30 mins apart from the other couples, sat while food got cold and was very dry and really not much flavor. The other couples food was over cooked after coming out so late which doesn't make sense and one of the dishes was so bad that my friend couldn't eat it and the waiter was very rude. This evening I had an awful experience at this restaurant - to the point that I will not be giving them my business anymore. I had called this morning and made a reservation for dinner at 6. I made it clear that we would be 4 people and a baby and that we needed to sit outside (as a pandemic parent we didn't feel comfortable sitting inside). Having been at this restaurant before (and with my baby before) I knew space was tight which was why I called beforehand to make sure it was okay. When we showed up at 6 the front of house acknowledged that we had a reservation and a table. However, when we came in to go towards the back with the stroller both the bartenders stopped us and said very rudely that if we wanted to sit outside we could only sit in front of the restaurant, not in the back. When I asked to sit outside in the back they again rudely said that out front was the only option. Firstly, there was already a group seated out front and we made it clear we wanted to sit out back and only outside. Secondly, I had intentionally called earlier in the day to make it clear that we were a big group and a baby and needed to be outside. If they couldn't accommodate us they should've said so on the phone. And they most definitely shouldn't have been so rude to us in person. I was genuinely shocked at how I was treated - especially when I've been here before and with my baby. We were really looking forward to one of our few evenings out and this rudeness ruined it. I will never be going here again. What a shame considering I truly liked this place. read more

When I tell you the chopped up shredded chicken (approx 60 pieces) fried them in old oil (the smell was radiating once I opened the box) and the potato balls were soggy in the same oil. I didn't find the artisanal allure here that I expect from American (new) and tapas restaurants. We started with a charcuterie board. The meats were unimpressive. The salmon and caraway seed crostini had a sardine scent to it. I liked the idiazabal and Camembert cheeses. The idiazabal had a texture comparable to manchego and a very slight smokiness. The Camembert was creamy and similar to a Brie, yet it had a very mild flavor to it. The Camembert paired well with the cherry jam. I would recommend both of the cheeses. For our main course, we split the green pappardelle. The pasta was fettuccini not pappardelle. It came in a creamy sauce and was plated with a few interesting ingredients like olives, cherry tomatoes, and ricotta. The service was friendly and attentive. It seemed like our waiter was in training so he was reliant on the other staff members to answer our questions. read more

I had brunch with my best friend here to celebrate his birthday a couple of Sundays ago. We've known each other for 13 years, but we're separated by over 200 miles now because he's living in Northern Virginia while I'm in Brooklyn (where we met in high school). Since we now see each other so rarely, I am so glad that I chose The Castello Plan for his birthday brunch, because it was such a fantastic experience, it just made the day even more special. We wanted to beat the brunch rush crowd so we met at around 11:30, and success; a few other tables were full, but there was plenty of choice seating available, including outside on their pretty patio (it was a bit too cool out at the time for us to venture there though). Within 45 minutes the place was packed, and with good reason; the food, drinks and service are all a cut above even some of the better Brooklyn brunches. My friend went for the Brooklyn Logger for his brunch, and so they brought out his fresh-squeezed orange juice and half grapefruit first, which he raved about (admittedly, my friend is an enthusiastic guy). We decided to be adventurous with our brunch cocktails, and I got the Cada Semana while he got the Bitter Morning, which reported tasted like a kicked-up, more delicious version of a Mimosa. I'd never tried Mezcal before, so my drink was a chance to try something new. Unfortunately, I have to say the smokiness of the Mezcal didn't really work for me, and there was a little too much bitterness from the Cocchi American; there was enough grapefruit juice and honey to make it drinkable though. If you like smoky Scotch, this would probably be a great brunch drink for you, but I think I'll try out the Bitter Morning myself next time. And yes, there will be a next time! Our entrees were so delicious that I definitely plan to go back to try more. Although not too soon, admittedly; so astonishingly rich! My Croque Madame was heaven on a plate, with the lightly toasted challah made even more flaky and tender with generous amounts of butter, and the eggs, cheddar and ham were a burst of savory deliciousness. My friend was so overwhelmed by the sheer mass of potatoes, eggs, bacon and salad he received that I actually don't recall him saying many words about it at all, but suffice it to say that he cleared the plate. The service was really lovely, very friendly. The ambiance was PERFECT for a casual, lazy Sunday brunch. I've had few brunch experiences as good as this one, this place is definitely a keeper. read more

Or maybe it was the 1+ hour wait. Whatever. Brooklyn logger all the way folks. I haven't tried anything else yet, but I dream about that perfectly sunny egg alongside the crispy bacon with the fresh salad over the perfectly fried potato hash. *drool* You know, some people say dreams depict your desires in life. The place is like a beautiful little cafe. Picture perfect Sunday mornings with the best kind of lighting--natural light. Come here for your fix of morning tea or coffee on a sunny day and you would never want to leave. You can easily miss this cute place since they do not have a sign with the name of the place, and you shouldn't miss it. This place has a cool atmosphere, good drinks and very good food. For me, their fish tacos will be the first choice, very fresh and taste very good. If the weather is nice you can also sit outside which can also make it nice, especially if it is a nice evening. One thing bothered me, and that is the smell. You can smell the cooking inside the place, and when you leave some of that smell may stay on your clothes. Also enjoyed the apps to start: raw oysters, melted Brie with blueberries (surprisingly good) and tots (so good, more liked round fried balls of mashed potatoes. Very addictive). I love this place. I was there twice, one week after the other, and each experience was great. When we walked in with a party of 4, the place looked full. There is one larger table in the corner that had a "reserved" sign. HUGE TIP: ask them if you can sit there. If you're a large group, they will probably let you. It is sometimes not actually reserved. I don't think they'll seat a couple there, but its great for a group of 5-7 people. The cheese plate is great, but I mean, its cheese. I know what taste to expect. I loved the gnocchi and had it both times i was there. My friend did not like the soup, but it was exchanged and we were happy about that. They had a scallop special which was very good. It is not cheap though, but no regrets. read more

I came here for drinks on Saturday night after dinner at The Farm on Adderley. We had passed by around 6 looking for a dinner spot and it was super crowded. We came back around 8 and there were only like two or three tables taken. They have 3 tall, long tables that fit 4-6 people (depending on stools available), a small bar with a few seats, and the rest are small, round 2-3 person tables. They also have some seating in the patio outside. The bar is dark, intimate, and romantic, with bare bulbs on the walls and candles on the tables. I loved the wood walls on one side and the brick wall on the other. The windows were large and bar area was pretty. They had shelving covering the entire back wall, with bottles filling up each shelf. Glasses were hanging from the bar in front of that. It's rustic and modern. The tall tables are on one side and the small tables are lower and on the right side of the bar. I liked this because it separated the group vibe from the date vibe. We only got drinks, so I don't know anything about the food here. I've seen great reviews though! 4 of us had beer and wine and 1 person got a martini. She only drank a bit of it because it was really salty. The music was pretty poppy, with Taylor Swift and Adele being two memorable ones that came on. I think the atmosphere would have been near perfect if they had had better music, but it wasn't loud enough to be distracting. The bathroom was cute, clean, and spacious. On my way there I also saw that there was a larger circular table near it. This would be good for groups that want to sit at a normal table, but the downside is that it's next to the bathroom and the bar. The rest of the seats are nice because we had a nice view of Cortelyou Road. We arrived a bit too late for the wine/cocktail happy hour, but it looks like a good deal! $6 for house wines and $7 for the bartender's choice cocktail. This is a cute spot with a small outdoor seating area, which is hard to find on Cortelyou. They have interesting cocktails, including Bloody Marys and Bloody Marias. I ordered the chicken sandwich and my husband got the burger and added cheese and bacon (he wanted the fried egg, too but the add ins were $2 each so he opted to skip it). It really didn't need the egg! It was a large burger, juicy and flavorful. The chicken sandwich was unique - with a super crispy breading and a sweet maple syrup sauce. The "fries" were actually potato chips, which was kind of disappointing. The service was OKAY, but they weren't overly attentive. I would probably go back of I found myself in the area. read more

My brother and I dined here, al-fresco, before a function at the King's Theater. There is much to be said, but in the end this is a joint worth checking out, mostly because of the food and drink. We sat in the small outdoor area. It was a bit cramped, and one chair was broken, but we were seated immediately. The outdoor area is not fancy-- there was trash near the back, and a cat's water dish. If you aren't scared or offended by cats, no worries. The waitress helped us promptly. My brother asked what the bartender's specialty was, which prompted some confusion. The bartender came out, and we ended up ordering the COCONUT MARGARITAS. What a delicious, well-balanced beverage. I could have pounded three of these, but I had to maintain my composure. This was a phenomenal drink. I had a burger, and my brother had the pulled pork sandwich. They were both very tasty, and came with simple fried potato croquettes and 'chips'. It wasn't a lot of food, but it was all we needed. I enjoyed the vibe of this place. The drinks were delicious and the food was good. The site is a bit of a mess-- the outside area was not maintained well-- but you do get a nice view of Cortelyou Ave. The service wasn't very warm, and they seemed very hipster-casual in their dress and approach (hey, it's their prerogative), but they got the job done and offered some helpful insights. The music was nice-- Bowie for the Bowie Lazarus show; they had on a "greatest hits" disc. Overall, this place is a bit pricey, but cool and hip. Enjoy. Fun fact: The place is named "The Castello Plan" because the comedian from the famous duo Abbott and Castello owned this site once and actually tried to start a clowning school here. I only popped into the Castello Plan for a quick drink but their menu made me stay for their excellent small plates. It turned out their signature cocktails were $7 all night on Wednesdays so that was good timing! So I tried the Kentucky Two-Timer and Old Fashioned Date Night - both were delicious and strong but the bourbon with black pepper had such an interesting taste that I keep thinking about it since! I got peckish after seeing someone else getting served small plates, so we tried five cheeses, charcuterie and some lush cured salmon crostini. It came out on a big wooden board with candied walnut, honey and some red fruit jam and lots of lovely light rye bread. Fantastic! It reminded me of tapas I had in a plaza in Barcelona which I occasionally fantasise about. So, we needed another drink to wash down the deliciousness. My other half had the Calabaza Pesadilla and its combination of pumpkin mezcal and Aztec bitters (not sure what they are) was so citrusy that I wish I'd ordered that. Next time! Really lovely service and beautiful utilitarian interior. This place would make a great place for a first date. read more

My partner and I have been dreaming about returning to The Costello Plan ever since our first experience in which we had such a lovely date! We spent forever trying to decide on cocktails-- there were just too many options that sounded amazing. He went with the "Smokin Granny" which he literally didn't stop talking about and fantasizing over for weeks. The apple/cinnamon rim had such a hold over him! To eat we had a beautiful ball of burrata with these juicy, colorful and fresh tomatoes, and then I had the "Tre Florella" pasta that had a lot going on in the best way possible. It was hella creamy, a gorgeous green color attributed to the basil pesto, and the flavors were divine. My man had The Fried Chicken Sandwich and he loved how crispy it was! That being said, I was so happy returning for a weekend brunch! I had "The Cortelyou" which was an entire feast. Breakfast of champions. My favorite aspects of the meal were the freshly squeezed orange juice and the half a grapefruit with honey and sea salt. I imagined I was eating a luxurious meal on the beach, even though it's the dead of winter. He had the burger, which looked amazing, but I was too wrapped up in my own plate to even give his the time of day. Obviously, he got the smokin granny again, and it was everything and more that he remembered. An espresso martini for each of us at the end had us feelin nice. Last but not least, the service was incredible. Our server was so kind and attentive and funny! He made us feel so welcomed. Interacting with him definitely added tremendously to an overall wonderful time. 10/10 experience. Do yourself a favor and go RIGHT NOW. read more

This is the brunch spot for Ditmas Park. They have a relatively small menu but everything is made to perfection. We were seated right away and the waitress was friendly and helpful with the menu. We got the Breakfast Logger and Croque Madame. I veered slightly from the menu and asked for my eggs well with cheese instead of sunny side up, Both orders came with a side of their kale salad, dressed with a vinaigrette and nut that was absolutely delicious. The OJ was fresh squeezed. The eggs and bacon were prepared perfectly. It's our first time here but definitely not the last. It can easily become the go-to brunch place. read more

Overall good ambiance with dim, soft lighting, but whatever's cooking on the kitchen fills the place with the smells and it will stick to your clothes, hair, etc. Needs much improvement on ventilation. Music was a bit too loud (not blaring) but s bit too loud for comfortable conversation. You kinda have to raise your voice a bit. Wine by the glass is really limited, and selection subpar. I doubt I'll be back until the outdoor seating opens up, but I'll probably forget about this place by then. We gave this place try for my wife's birthday, as she wanted to go somewhere new for us. Three stars for a very mixed experience. I would call the greeting we received and the service "gruff" at best. When we got there, we mentioned that we had a reservation for an outdoor table. The bartender yelled "take the one in the very back". No hello, how are you, or anything like that. Well okay... the one in the back was soaked from the rain, as were the chairs. Fortunately a friendlier younger server gave us a nicer (and dry) table nearer to the heat lamps. As the evening progressed, we had the not-so-friendly bartender/server either accosting us, essentially asking if we were ready to order our meal as soon as our first cocktails arrived, or basically ignoring us when we indicated we hadn't had a chance to look at the menu. The friendlier server was much the same way, we saw him wandering the hallway looking at his phone, as I waited for my beer. Okay, by and large the food was very good, hence the three stars. The laphroaig cocktail that I had was exceptional, as was the homemade caramel ice cream that we had for dessert. Our appetizers and entrees were quite enjoyable as well, especially the shrimp appetizer. The big disappointment was how they mishandled my wife's birthday. When we first sat down, she mentioned that it was her birthday, which to any restaurant should be a clue to at least acknowledge that fact as the evening progresses. But there was literally nothing from them. When it came time to order dessert, I actually had to go inside and remind the bartender that it was my wife's birthday. His response floored me... "I'm not sure if we have any candles". We subsequently had to wait over 20 minutes for our dessert. When it finally arrived, the younger server handed the plate with the candles to me, and not to my wife. Hello?! No one sang, no one said happy birthday, nothing. It was as if they didn't know what a birthday was. My theory is that the delay in getting our dessert was because they sent the younger server out to the local deli to buy some birthday candles. When we finally paid our check, the gruff bartender/server said "happy birthday" to us in passing as he walked away. Needless to say, my wife was really disappointed, as was I. Celebrating a customer's birthday at a restaurant is service 101. At the Castello Plan, they had no clue. read more

this food was an embarrassment. server admitted that the kitchen never got our ticket because of a printer error, which sucks but, whatever. but we were never offered any appetizer or anything as an apology, which was strange. i ordered a medium rare steak frites and was served what looked like a boiled steak that was soggy, grey and also fully cooked through, served on a plate with 1 inch of water, and potatoes that were pretty undercooked. it was edible, but only just. i hadn't eaten in 9 hours, and i really couldn't wait. really shocked any kitchen would send this out. never eating here again. read more
