I was in the neighborhood and had a case of the eatz. I staggered in and was met by an elevated rustic ambiance. I was acknowledged and seated immediately. I don't recall the names of the drinks we imbibed but they were tasty and the presentation was on pointe. (See photos) The mussels were steamy and the flavor was savory enough that I consumed every last morsel of the accompanying bread as I dipped it into the sauce. The fried okra was a nice palette cleaner, toasty yet soft and meaty. My Fiancée had the fried chicken sandwich with a fried egg- the presentation was lovely and both the egg and chicken were freshly hot. We also ordered another sandwich but I don't recall the name of it. (Picture included) All around a nice, low key and chill environment with hearty and savory meals to accompany the creative/dive-y drinks. Had a lovely dinner with a friend last night here. I really wanted to order more than I knew I could eat so I started simply in the hopes I'd visit again and try additional items on the menu. Anyhow, I tried the fried chicken sandwich which was a pretty generous portion of chicken (I cut it in half and added the other half to my side salad). Chicken was delicious, great coating and juicy inside. Comes with pickles and slaw which makes it juicier. I really wanted to try the onion fries but wasn't sure I could handle more friedness. Any way, it was delicious and filling! Thought about dessert but I was happy as is. Sat in the backyard and it was lovely. If you back a reservation for outside, be sure you ask for the side or backyard as there were a few tables in front just on the sidewalk as well. read more

When a place is brand new and suddenly popular and hasn't hired enough staff to accommodate the suddenly large number of people coming through the door it's understood that some leeway is given. But this place isn't brand new. We came on a warm Friday night around 6:30. A staff member let us know a table was going to open up shortly and we waited to hear from him outside. He never came back outside so we went in. A few small cafe style tables were empty but the bartender (who, it turns out, was not our waiter) pointed out available tall tables so we sat down. The solitary waiter eventually took our order and the entrees came out and were good but not exactly hot. More room temperature. The cutlery came five minutes later. We had ordered an appetizer but that was forgotten. After finishing the meal the appetizer was delivered to us. So we ordered second cocktails and laughed. Our waiter never checked on us or explained why he brought the appetizer out long after the entree. Nope. We saw him the bare minimum of times. Maybe a waiter called out. Or maybe the owner doesn't want to hire another one. The music was loud enough that conversing at anything below the level of shouting was just not possible. I never understand why so many people just accept the super loud music thing... One high note: our cocktails were very good and the cocktail waiter was convivial. But don't expect the type of service you should expect and don't expect or the atmosphere to be laid back and conducive to conversation. Or your waiter to be attentive. Or that the appetizer will come out before the entree. read more

After a fun filled day of shopping and running errands we decided to stop in for an early dinner. The name of the restaurant sounded fun and had some good looking pics of food on their Yelp page. I will say the space inside is small and with the rounded 2 person tables it feels even smaller. They do offer outdoor seating but it was a chilly day and didn't feel like becoming human popsicles. Our waitress was very friendly and welcoming. She offered some input on the menu and made us feel at home. We ended up splitting the chicken Galactic nachos, grilled shrimp with chipotle aioli and the burrata with tomatoes topped with a balsamic glaze for dinner. After discovering we still had room for dessert we ordered the banana bread pudding with a brandy sauce and a chocolate lava cake. TFW your friend cancels on you at the last minute on a Saturday night and you wind up hanging with hubby instead. Yes, that was my tale of woe. JK. Hubby and I had a perfectly lovely time here. Small space is rustic, cum cozy, cum romantic. So no complaints there. Service was equally pleasant. Jury's out on the cocktails and food, though: Brooklyn Crossing aka Dirty Gin Martini: I like my Dirty Martinis how I like my men... very dirty... sorry, couldn't resist. But, seriously. Couldn't pick up any briny flavor at all. Kitchen Garden with bourbon, sage, strawberries, strawberry balsamic shrub, lemon: Hubby is a bourbon fanatic and wasn't digging this. "It wasn't complex enough for $14.00." If you say so, honey. Harissa Steamed Mussels: Loved the whimsical presentation, topped with a pretty blue polka-dotted bucket. Broth was packed with flavor, too. Perfect for soaking up with the crusty bread that accompanied this dish. But the Mussels.... They were gritty, and numerous shells were either empty or tightly closed. In hindsight, we should have sent it back, but sometimes you're just not in the mood to do that, you know? House-made Tater Tots: These were more like small, tubular potato croquettes, breaded and filled with mashed potato, than Tater Tots. Mind you, they were actually quite tasty. But I was expecting Tater Tots. And as anyone who has watched 'Top Chef' knows, don't set the diner up to expect one thing and then deliver another. Bottom line: This spot had a really nice energy on a Saturday night, and it feels like it's full of potential in terms of both the food and drinks. So I'll probably give it another shot, but for now, three stars. read more

I wasn't sure about what to expect based on the mixed reviews regarding the service aspect of this place, but my experience was great. We did not have reservations and it was pretty busy but they were very welcoming and we got a table right away. Our server was great and gave us some good recommendations on the drinks and food. Based on a conversation with our server I ordered the Wild Thots drink, the drink was delicious! My friend got the painkiller and loved her drink as well, both cocktails were lit on fire which added to the overall presentation and made for some great IG pics. The burger was really good, cooked medium rare as requested and I really enjoyed the fries as well. My friend got the steak frites and she said it was delicious. I wish we could have tried out more of the cocktails but we didn't have time. At this point they are only doing outside seating but hopefully they will be able to do indoors since even with the heat lamps I was pretty cold. read more

Stumbled upon this place during a late night stroll with my boyfriend. It's great for late night eats or just a quick drink mainly for those that are into beer or quirky cocktails. Food: The crab cake is a hit and is seasoned very well but seems to vary day by day. I've had it twice and definitely preferred it the first time although the second time wasn't too far off. The chicken poppers for $10 seem a bit overpriced as you only get about 7-10 tiny pieces of chicken in a water glass- not the best presentation on this front. They are fried very well and crispy but definitely lack seasoning. The fried jerk chicken sandwich- I am going to keep it simple by saying this is an acquired taste-it is definitely not like your typical Caribbean jerk but perhaps the chefs take on jerk. Ambiance: Perfect low lighting for date night but casual enough for a quick bite after the gym or a regular late night stroll. Outdoor seating is definitely a plus. Price- This place has decent deals but I would definitely recommend asking about portions when ordering particular items, just to have an idea of what you're getting yourself into. The dinner entrees are more on the pricey side $20 and up for the most part. Overall- I would recommend for a quick bite or grabbing drinks with friends or your significant other. A friend introduced me to Castillo Plan, and I'm so glad they did! A+ for kind service, delicious Buffalo wings, and a stellar cocktail program. I absolutely loved the Fernet Daiquiri. If you've ever wanted to try fernet but were intimidated by its strong profile solo, ease yourself in with this refreshing cocktail! I lost interest somewhat at the Burrata salad. The stars of this dish were the ripe heirloom tomatoes, but the cheese was too cold when served, and there could have been more basil and balsamic. My final concern is COVID-related. I wish the tables had been further apart; however, I recognize that I may simply have to come back on a less crowded evening than Saturday. Because with such amazing cocktails and whole swaths of the menu yet untasted, it would be a pity to stay away. read more

Terrible service. my bf and I were the only black people patronizing this establishment (which is usually fine) but the servers made us feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome When I first arrived I needed to send 1 email but apparently they had a rule that you couldn't have your laptop out after a certain time during the week. I learned this as I sat down. I saw one guy with his laptop out and no one was bothering him so I proceeded to use mine quickly before the server came. As I opened mine-The manager came right over and told me the rule and I asked if it was possible for me to just send one work email and I promise to put it right away! She was nice enough to agree! But she kept an eye on me the entire time even though there was a man right across from me with his family on his laptop. so I proceeded and closed my laptop right away and didn't even complain. Next issue. Ordering. The server never came to us. My bf finally got up and asked for help. Server finally came. Took our order. 30 mins later, No food. No server. No drinks. No water. Boyfriend went over again and asked for status of our food? Server said food is coming. no apology. Finally the server walks over with our bill! Yes our bill before the food even comes out atp we were very confused and hungry. So I asked the server why he was bringing us a bill before bringing our food over???? After what was about 40 mins of waiting in half empty restaurant while everyone around us was being served. He said sorry I thought you guys ate already. Not sure how. He looked over at us several times while serving folks near us in the garden. So we continue to wait and another server comes over with a bill!!!! Yes a bill again before our food comes and now my bf and I are contemplating if we should just leave at this point because clearly that's what they want right? My bf explained we still haven't had our dinner or drinks and he's the second person to bring us a bill..... as my boyfriend is talking to the second server the first server is behind him with our food. I SAW A ROACH!!!!! A roach is exactly what I saw crawling on the side of my table as I was dining here last night. Unfortunately my friends and I spotted the roach right after our meal so the thought of it almost made me nauseous after I ate. I'm sorry to say, but any establishment that has a roach crawling willy nilly around it's dining area, during peak hours, must be bug infested!! Worst of all, the restaurant wasn't even apologetic for the incident and totally waved it off and said this kinda stuff happens when a restaurant is located on the first floor. Really?!?!??! I'm sorry but from my understanding, most restaurants in NYC are located on the first floor and I usually don't come across a roach crawling around while dining. As for their food, we went for their all you can eat mussels. Although their price was decent ($10) and the mussels were plump and huge, the service was absolutely horrendous. The staff would frown on my friends and I whenever we asked for seconds. The portion they gave us was small so when we did ask for more, they would make us wait at least 15-25 minutes before they took out the next batch. Eventually, they would just come up to us and say, "are you all finish" and when we said "no", they gave us an attitude. Let's just say the service was so bad that eventually even the water stopped coming! My only conclusion for this poor behavior on their end was due to the fact that we didn't order anything else except for the mussels and cocktails. Apparently ordering just cocktails was not enough. All in all, my experience here was TERRIBLE AND DISGUSTING!!! As important as food might be, I think it is just as important to give customers a good dining experience, but here at Castello Plan, their service goes hand-in-hand with that nasty looking ROACH that I saw crawling on my table.!!!!!! The food was so delicious! I came here with my brother for dinner. The service was great. He order the steak while I had a burger. I didn't order any traditional drink... I asked the waiter if they had frozen margaritas and he told me no but he showed me these alcoholic ice pops that they had. I had about three and I was feeling such a buzz I had Mojito flavor and margarita they were very generous with the alcohol inside of the frozen pop. My story is like many others: so-so food with horrible service. It took them 15 minutes to give us water. Over an hour to get appetizers. She called and informed them we were coming and how many people. They were not able to accommodate a party of 12 at one table - this isn't really on them, more of an FYI. I wasn't happy with the service but that is almost subjective and i won't speak on it. The issue that i had, while eating at this establishment, on Saturday night, was that i pulled someone's hair out of my mouth. This came as part of my pico & guacamole. Done and done. Had been coming here through COVID times sitting outside in winter to support the place. Food and drinks are good, however the service is awful. You have to ask for everything from plate change to silverware and napkins. Furthermore the waiter turned over a bucket of clam shells on my lap... no excuses or courtesy something.. We were sitting outside in the back of the garden with nobody around and I didn't notice a no smoking sign, my mistake. A manager gave us such an attitude over this cigarette which I never seen before. He won't let us finish our cocktails standing by our table repeatedly saying "pay your bill " (which BTW was 235 for 4 people) and "you are not welcome here anymore". It was unbelievable. The new employees need a little tune up... Walked in and waited for a beat at the bar. There were no workers inside as well as no customers. Had no issue with this because someone will be back. Was texting on my phone only to notice someone walk by me and greet the person standing BEHIND me (so obviously they came in AFTER me). I turned to say hello and the heavyset blonde continued to talk to the other customer while also waving me off with her hand. Around this time Jake (I think) appears behind the bar and is laying the charm on thick (possibly to counteract the poor exchange he just witnessed between the heavyset blonde and I). I work with customers as well so I play along. Ordered my usual chai latte with oat milk. Noticed it was a little dark before putting the lid on, but wtv I say my goodbyes and I'm on my way. I take a sip outside and it tastes like coffee. Surprised, I go back inside and ask him (Jake) what it is that he gave me because it tastes like coffee. He says that all lattes come with espresso (Now in our initial exchange we talked and I told him I've been coming here for a while, but I just get this one thing since there aren't many options for a vegan), I replied that I've never had that put in there before, he reiterated what he said and I said it was ok and left. As I was leaving he was saying to the heavyset blonde and maybe 1 other person that he was not wrong (more than once). Let me add this about the exchange with the blonde. I am a black woman with an Afro and she passed over me to help a white woman waiting BEHIND ME. Instead of me addressing the situation abrasively, I simply said hello because I was obviously waiting before the other woman. Not understanding why she felt it appropriate or respectful to [physically] wave me off, never sacrificing an ounce of attentiveness to the other customer. I really liked the employees that worked here during the pandemic. They were respectful, loquacious, and efficient. An exchange like this in brooklyn that is only minutes away from neighborhoods with BIPOC being the majority makes this not only unacceptable, but adding insult to injury. About the chai latte: moved over here summer of 2020 and have been drinking the same drink consistently at various times of the day/night. Your new staff should know that espresso doesn't go in a chai latte simply because the word latte is in the name (Jake's logic). But he is old enough to know that if a regular (which he already knew I was because of our convo before the drink) orders their regular, the customer should not be met with defensiveness at the very least. The customer isn't always right, but in a situation of a repeat item from a repeat customer, it should have been handled differently. Not sure if I'll be returning... Hats off to the Castello Plan, while I haven't returned to dine indoors since 2019, I have had a big handful of deliveries of very good meals. Tonight I ordered the smoked salmon crostini, which is always great with the pickled onions and the micro greens. I also ordered 3 cheeses; red rock cheddar,1924 blue, and the barely buzzed. All high quality like a bklyn larder, and packed perfectly in wax paper. I've also ordered and love the summer gazpacho. Quality control is definitely important for delivery orders. high quality ingredients all around . I am happy they are close enough to be accessible and enjoy. read more

Being that there's probably 20 seats in the entire restaurant it's a bit disconcerting when it takes 20 minutes to get waters and menus. When the food came our burgers (ordered well done and medium well) were completely raw. Ordered blue cheese and got billed for cheddar yet no cheese was on it. The food took over an hour to get to us and we ended up just having to scarf down the bloody bun because we had somewhere to be. The only redeeming quality is that the bartender listened to our complaints and refunded one of the meals off our check. She advised us to not come on weekends because "the kitchen sucks on the weekends" read more

We've tried Castello Plan twice now and just won't be back. We went once under the previous owners and a couple of weeks ago to give it another shot after we heard that there was new management. Both times that we were there...our orders were forgotten. The most recent time we were waiting 25min for a beer and glass of wine, and then our server was constantly MIA so we were flagging down other workers for help. I ordered the burger and at almost $20 was expecting it to knock my socks off, but it was super average. My boyfriend got the fried chicken sandwich. The menu specifies that this sandwich has a spiced maple sauce...to us that reads as a little spicy, maybe more aromatic than anything. He loves spicy food so he was excited to try it. When he was eating it, it made him sweat, his mouth burn, and he could barely tolerate it. After the abysmal service, they comped dessert for us, but honestly even that is not enough to bring us back. We want to like this place since we spend so much time on Cortelyou, but it is super overpriced for the quality and the service is awful. read more

The first thing I have to talk about is the owners who are extremely kind and welcoming! They're so pleasant and sweet. I stepped in on NYE on a date and we found accommodations right away. We were able to sit where we wanted without any restrictions. The drinks were delicious and the service was wonderful. The owner came around with New Years Knickknacks and the champagne for the entire restaurant to toast with. It was very nice of them to do that and I appreciated it very much. We were even complimented on what a cute couple we were even though my date was all over me in the restaurant. Ha! read more

The owners of this place are hands-on with the guests, which is always a great sign. The service here was spectacular with the wait staff really going above and beyond to ensure we were all served in a timely way and looked after. The prix-fixe consisted of fried chicken, waffles and a bevy of goodies which all tasted excellent. The food, in fact, was so good, the kitchen was having a hard time keeping up with how quickly we were eating it all up. However, at no point did things ever slow down. The bartender made some excellent cocktails and our party was never left thirsty or wanting. Overall, I think this place is going to be a hit in this neighbourhood and should do well with its commitment to good food and excellent service. Great little restaurant bar, surprisingly crowded late on a Saturday night (or I guess I shouldn't be surprised, it's Brooklyn, right? Excuse this Dallas girl...) I really loved my cocktail, the Hera's Garden. It was so unique, with fresh apple cider, jalapeño, mint, lime and apple cinnamon bitters. Really have never had anything like it, and the waiter confirmed that it's one of their most popular concoctions. My sister had the Bee's Knees, a classic cocktail that they do well. We also split the Brownie Sundae, and subbed the spicy chocolate ice cream for the vanilla (I recommend that choice). Really delicious. Excellent experience overall, would 100% go back. read more

Unlimited mussels on Monday nights? Don't mind if I do! It's a pretty no-frills mussels night. You don't get a choice of broth. You just get a gigantic bowl of mussels and a side of deliciously fresh sourdough bread. So I'm definitely not complaining. We destroyed about 4 rounds of mussels (pretty sure the waitress was trying to steer us away from ordering another... understandably). Had given up on this place a few years ago after a couple of not so great experiences and decided to try again a couple of weeks ago. This isn't a place you go to for great service, the server is pretty aloof, they don't check on tables often especially if you are seated out side however we really enjoyed our endive salad and the mussels with a side of fries. Exactly two weeks later we went back and the food was awful. This is the problem with this place, it's incredibly inconsistent, from the size and glass they use for the same beverage from one time to the next, to the bread they serve with musselS (first time it was toasted, this time it was not). The mussels must've had about 100 rosemary leaves in the sauce. The taste was completely overpowering and yet they were somehow super bland at the same time. Please encourage your staff to have consistency in how they prep the food! Once again on a castello plan hiatus. read more
