I was surprised for my birthday with a over night stay at the Skamania Lodge, one of my most favorite places in the area. During our visit we ate at the Cascade Room, which we don't typically do because it is very, very expensive. Normally we dine at the River Rock Café. The River Rock is pricey, but nowhere near as pricey as the Cascade. The River Rock is laid back and more grill style in its food presentation. While the Cascade Room is much more formal. Another big difference is vegetarian options; Cascade Room has virtually ZERO vegetarian options with the exception of salads, while the River Rock does have a couple things on the menu for veggie lovers.
The quality of food in both restaurants is good, but the Cascade Room surpasses the River Rock, and most other restaurants in its superior cuisine and service. We ordered pan seared diver scallop, aged new york steak with mushroom port-demi glace and stilton bleu cheese and oven roasted rosemary chicken. The food was divine! Perfectly cooked and prepared. Fine dining at its best! My complements to the chef on the dinner. The bread pudding dessert, however, was not reminiscent of classic bread pudding and was overly sweetened and moist with way too much cinnamon.
Our server, Tom, was a true gem! So relaxed, so fast, efficient and friendly. Loved him. Our bill was astronomical!!! I mean, off the charts! I guess that's why we don't eat here often.
The next day we had breakfast at the Cascade Room, as it was the only choice seeing as the River Rock was closed and the town of Stevenson has very little selection for eating out. Here is where I have a big complaint. I struggled with whether or not to reduce my 5 star rating to a 4 star over this. At breakfast, just as we sat down, and before we even had a chance to look over the menu, our waitress was at our table side and kindly offering us some freshly squeezed orange juice....like pushing the menu item. I said "sure" and got the four of us a glass. Mind you....there has been no disclaimer of cost, so I figure a glass of orange juice shouldn't cost more than a couple dollars, right? My son and I got inexpensive parfaits for our meals, while my husband and daughter got meals in the $10 range.
So when the bill arrived for breakfast at a whopping $75 I nearly shi# myself. What the heck!!! I mean we just had some eggs, hash browns...some parfaits with way too much granola in them and some OJ!!! Well, come to find out, the OJ was a mind blowing $6 a glass.....A TINY ASS GLASS of OJ WITH SOME FUNKY BERRIES FLOATING IN IT!! Are you freaking kidding me!!!
There should have been a disclaimer on the price when the OJ was offered. I totally feel like the staff is being asked to push this glass of OJ on guests to make more money. That is totally immoral!! ARGGHH! I wish I complained to the management, but I didn't want to make a scene. Honestly, the waitress should have said, "Hi, can I offer you an extremely overpriced glass of orange juice that is pretentiously adorned with berries that float around in the bottom of your glass that you really aren't going to want to drink but will make you feel fancy while you sip your OJ around them?" Hmmm...let me think about that.....NO!!!!
Wow, that was a rant, wasn't it? Despite this problem, I still love Skamania Lodge and will return again. However, I don't know about eating at the Cascade again. Sure it's great, but I try to live a bit more frugally than the menu there will allow! read more
