It feels like somewhere you could dress up for a nice evening, but we walked in wearing casual travel clothes and felt completely comfortable. Nice napkins, nice dishware, great atmosphere. Even the bathrooms were clean and smelled good. Somebody is paying attention here. Our waitress, Veronica, made the experience even better. She was always smiling, personable, and helpful. She asked about our trip, where we were headed, and how we'd found the restaurant. She walked us through the specials and what they're known for. I actually commented to my wife how nice it was to have service like that again. She made us feel welcome. I had the steak sandwich with fries and garlic aioli. The steak was tender enough to bite through without pulling the sandwich apart, which too many places get wrong. It had a bright, tangy flavor, and the peppers added just enough heat. Everything was seasoned well, with just the right amount of sauce. The fries and aioli were excellent too. My wife had the cilantro risotto special topped with grilled salmon. The salmon was cooked perfectly, with a little char, and she enjoyed every bite. Then Veronica surprised us with complimentary ricotta donuts. They make the ricotta and caramel dipping sauce fresh in-house every morning. Holy cow. What a finish to an already incredible meal. From the food to the service to the care put into the place, this was a thoroughly good experience. We wish we had a restaurant like this back home. I had the Pesto Caprese pizza and it was amazing! The balsamic glaze added just the right amount of sweetness to bring together the different flavors. My husband had the NY steak and said it was delicious and cooked to perfection. Our server was very attentive and told us how all the ingredients were locally sourced, which is very good to hear because we like to support local businesses. Lastly, the building is quite beautiful with the exposed brick interior walls. I'm not familiar with the local history so I'm curious as to what this building was originally? The parking lot was completely full, so after circling around and eventually finding street parking, we figured the place must be popular. Unfortunately, that turned out to be the high point of the experience. The main restaurant was fairly full, so we were seated in a large, dark bar area in the back. And then... nothing happened. For more than 30 minutes. Eventually, a waiter appeared and took our order. Then another 30+ minutes passed before the food arrived. Somehow, even our iced tea didn't make it to the table until the food did. All told, we spent roughly an hour sitting at an empty table without so much as a beverage, and about 90 minutes from the time we arrived until we actually had food in front of us. At that point, the whole experience was becoming almost comical. We ordered a cod burger with fries, a Caesar salad, onion rings and an iced tea. The cod burger was okay. Nothing memorable, but edible. The Caesar salad was actually good. The fries, however, arrived cold, soggy and thoroughly greasy -- quite an accomplishment considering how long we waited for them. The onion rings apparently embarked on a separate journey altogether, because they never arrived. By then, we'd lost the will to ask about them and just gave up. The grand total for one cod burger with cold fries, a small Caesar salad and an iced tea? $40.00! We mentioned the long wait, forgotten food and other problems to our waiter. He was sympathetic and explained that they were short staffed, which we understand can make things difficult. But being short staffed doesn't make a 90-minute lunch, no drinks for an hour, cold soggy fries and forgotten food any less disappointing -- especially at those prices. By the end, we weren't even angry. The whole thing had crossed over into comedy. Needless to say, on future drives between Oregon and Seattle, we'll be finding a different midway lunch stop.

We came here for lunch before visiting the park, and it was a solid meal with a view. Located in small town Toutle, we had planned to visit Fire Mountain Grill beforehand while planning our Mt. St. Helens weekend trip, which I recommend you do too if you're planning to visit the park. It's a stand alone restaurant in the woods that overlooks Toutle River and is in a house, which is part of its charm! Forget phone service, but you'll enjoy being out in the wilderness. We visited on a Saturday for lunch and the place was busy. We learned that when we visited it was the last Saturday before they were closing for the season, which they do when the weather gets colder. I'm sure they must get a lot of their business from tourists on their way or from Mt. St. Helens. In fact, after we ate here, we spotted many of the same patrons from here at the Johnson Ridge Observatory. The best seat in the house is on the back deck, which looks out to the river and woods. My partner and I both ordered a burger and shared their famous berry cobbler, which you must save room for! Every table was getting the cobbler and after eating it, I can see why. It was delicious, with the warm mixed berry concoction, with a crumbly surface and a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. NOMS! The burgers were solid, too, but not my favorite item here after having the cobbler. I recommend if you're planning a trip out to Mt. St. Helens to visit Fire Mountain Grill for a meal. Just remember that it closes for the cold season.

There were maybe 4-5 average size parties of people there in booths of about 2-5 people each. The dessert menu was entirely cake and pie from the dessert counter but the rotating dessert refrigerator had literally one pie in it and a piece of another pie that looked like it had been in there awhile. The pie refrigerator itself looked unsanitary. The bathrooms are in desperate need of basic maintenance/renovation--I pee in a lot of pit toilets and honeybuckets so a gross bathroom doesn't usually phase me, but being a foodservice business, the condition of the bathroom was alarming. The food was as expected--the chicken ranch bacon wrap was very large but I didn't taste much chicken, mostly just mayo, lettuce and bacon bits. The burger looked decent and the fries were standard frozen deep fried which were fine. I really do like to support mountain diners when I come off long hikes, but this one didn't hit the mark this time. Even just one more extra hand would have made a world of a difference.
