Ahhh the smell of seared flesh brought me into The Capital Grill today. One of the several pleasures I had while in Pittsburgh prior to watching the Seattle Kraken carve up the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night. Now ya can't grill it till ya kill it so I'm all good with that. My bone in Ribeye steak was spectacular and perfectly prepared by the grill master of the evening. Medium came out with juices flowing with a hint of pink in the center. As I grabbed my knife and carved into this flesh I gave a quick prayer to the flesh gods for giving me such a fine opportunity to dine on this beast. This animal was savored by me to the last bite. I honor its perfectly marbled fat layer and tender bites I masticated with delight. Thank you food gods for an outstanding meal. Now the experience aside from the meal was outstanding . Federico served us the entire meal from start to finish and he was a mench! My lady had an issue with her steak and it was removed which he didn't have to do, so it's appreciated and I hope it showed in my tip. The food is good but does not separate itself from its peers. I ordered the bone-in ribeye (22oz.) and it was cooked as specified - medium rare. It was quite a bit thinner than I anticipated but had a perfect char on the outside and was tender all the way through. The cut did not have a lot of fat on it either. The service was excellent, exactly what you would expect from a higher-end steakhouse. We had an event yesterday in one of their private spaces. There was a screen available for a presentation. The room was fairly small but fit a good amount of people with 4-5 people at each table. We got four types of bread in the bread basket and it was piping hot which was lovely and our server was nice enough to bring us more butter when I asked. The salad was fine. The Capital Grille feels like the chain steakhouse restaurant that it is from an atmosphere perspective (way too large & not intimate), but the food is also not very good. I thought the appetizers were greasy, and my risotto was mushy (it was also supposed to come with lobster & asparagus, and there was one piece of each in the whole dish). We waited 30 minutes for our table to be ready, and our reservation was made well in advance. The hostess then sat us at a booth right next to the door, where cold air was rushing in. I asked to be moved into the main room, and the waiter obliged. We were seated immediately in the much more comfortable main room where at least 3 tables for two were already bussed. That kind of set the "dinner experience" off to a bad start. For a "fine-dining" restaurant, there were quite a few people all around my table wearing sweatshirts and slides. This agitated me as someone who only gets to have this type of dinner on rare occasions, maybe once a year. For guests to be allowed to dress down, it makes the atmosphere feel less sincere for those who see it as a special occasion. Otherwise, the food was fantastic. Our waiter had great recommendations and was super helpful. The calamari appetizer was crispy and buttery, and steaks came out cooked to perfection. Since I wanted to avoid mischoice, I visited the Capital Grill in Pittsburgh. I think it is admirable that the Capital Grill maintains the same quality and hospitality in each restaurant. The sesame-seared tuna with gingered rice was an interesting dish to me. The sauce was a bit spicy to me and I may prefer soy sauce to it. The raisin walnut bread and onion bread were delicious. I also like the thick and hearty lobster bisque. I like their cheesecake so much! Since it was large to me, I ate 1/5 of it with berries and took the rest of it with me. Honestly rather disappointing. We have been there before and had good experience. This visit was very disappointing. Our reservations were at 5:00 on a friday. The French onion soup literally was cold and had to be sent back which we rarely do. The wait staff left our used dishes on the table for most of the meal which is really disappointing in a high end restaurant. The potato chip appetizer for $38 was really a joke. I expected a handmade high-end caramelized onion dip as the menu said. Onion dip from Giant Eagle tasted better. Perhaps 25 small potato chips served with some caviar. Definitely not worth the money and the quality was inexcusable. we requested extra topping for the dessert which they forgot. The filet was excellent. The mashed potatoes and corn were excellent. The service was wonderful. I'd never had a piece of tuna as large as what I got and they prepared it super rare as I requested. It was delicious. First off, I'm not a "fine dining" kind of guy. I greatly prefer a vibrant food hall, an outdoor food truck scene or a local hidden gem that cares less about the experience and more about the food. Recently I attended such an event and Capital Grill pretty much lived up to my expectations. I had a house salad...nothing special An 10 oz filet. It was fine, cooked properly but not well seasoned and a little bland. It came with mashed potatoes but those weren't exciting either. The one food that was exciting was the fresh bread. If I rated CG on the bread alone, they'd be beyond 5*! It came to the table warm with three different options and a side of softened butter that melted when applied to the bread...that was great. We had eaten dinner at the Capital Grille before and remembered it as a "nice restaurant ". Therefore, we reserved a table for a special anniversary dinner that included 3 generations of family. Everyone was looking forward to enjoying a happy meal together in what we recalled to be a dignified and quiet space. The food and service was, in fact, a 5/5. Everyone enjoyed the food, wine, and excellent, attentive service. The reason for the 3 star rating is the atmosphere. First, the noise level was so loud that we could barely hear one another as we tried to talk over several loud parties surrounding us. Second, the dress code, or lack thereof, was really sad. The waitstaff was dressed much better than most of the patrons. People shuffled in wearing sweat pants, hoodies, t shirts, crocs, shorts, sports-themed knit hats (that they wore during dinner), you name it. "Well, at least no one's wearing pajama pants and slippers", we joked. Shortly after that, a girl entered in pajama pants and slippers. Just sad. Is it that hard to have and enforce a basic dress code? Is nothing special anymore? A big part of going out to eat in a "special restaurant " (and paying well above average restaurant prices) is not just the food, but the atmosphere.
