Wow. This place is the true definition of "character". I was brought here after a long day of walking around the 4th Ave festival. My erstwhile friend claimed it was something that had to be experienced. He was certainly not lying. See, no review can adequately explain the feeling when you walk in. The dark scrawled-on walls that, after so long and so many layers of pen and ink, look like nothing so much as ancient cave paintings. The sense that the record probably skipped when you walked in. And, yes, the feeling that the whole bar turned to assess you. The beer is....well it's Coors on tap. There's not much to be said beyond that. The crock pot hotdogs they offer apparently have been upgraded in recent months. I can't say I noticed. It reminded me of the boiled hot dogs I had in incalculable school lunches throughout my youth. I gotta say that I love this bar :) Positive: the staff is friendly, the patrons are friendly, it hits the stereotype of a dive bar to a T!, your get good drinks for cheap prices, they dont mind if you write on the walls (I dont know about you but that right there deserves four stars). Negative: I would have to say the bathroom... I am a skinnier person but I can barely fit into the bathroom that doesn't lock and has a whole in the door (but then again this is a true dive bar so I guess this type of bathroom is to be expected). read more

The Buff! Tucson's oldest bar. It sure does look and smell like it inside. The happy minute is about the best thing that this joint has going for it. Prices are reasonable and if your in the mood for some indigestion try one of their Coors soaked crockpot hot dogs. What's with the grumpy doorman? We stopped in on a Friday night, and the place wasn't busy at all. My group consisted of guys who were 47, 46, 38, and 21. The 21-year-old is tall, and easily looks 21. Yet for some reason this ruined doorman came up with an angry look and tone and said, "So, who's idea was it to come in here tonight???" Get real. I like this place, kinda dive-y and not necessarily the kind of bar that appeals to people because it has a unique aesthetic. This is a nice place to just get drinks, play pool and not expect that much effort for entertainment unless you bring your own. There's a good selection on the Jukebox, and you can see all the people who came before you written on the walls. I can't imagine writing a bad review for this place, unless of course you are an up your own ass college student that doesn't understand what they're getting into. The Buffet is a dive, plain and simple, and is a perfect one at that. Happy minute happens twice a day, in which case you can double up on what you're drinking for a dollar or for free (depending on which one you catch.) Super divey. Small but so much fun. I guess it depends on the crowd you come with and your state of mind. Place is dirty, grungy, grimy. You come for the ambiance:-) They have cute tee shirts with their logo for sale. And if you've had too many drinks feel free to order one of their hotdogs or maybe two or three as they aren't so bad. According to the poster on the wall they are the best hotdogs in town. I'd only argue with that in my sober state. read more

Best dive bar in town...hands down. The michelada is award-winning...and I have searched high and low for the best michelada in town.

The staff alone was enough reason to come back. Beyond memorable. Drinks we're awesome and they even had a menu to order food! My main issue is the women's bathroom door. You don't exactly have a "private " area. The overall experience of the bar was well worth the trip. Thanks guys. read more

I'm not sure exactly what it is, but entering the Buffet is like entering another dimension. Time slows down. The air smells differently. The drinks taste so much stronger (okay, that one can be explained -- these kind bartenders are generous with their pours). I've been to the Buffet more times than I care to admit. I'm not an alcoholic, but I am a survivor of Buff Day: 7 straight hours in the Buffet, celebrating both happy minutes and subsisting only on the food to be found here (and let's be real, hundreds of booze calories). Most of the reviews posted here over the past couple years do a fine job of describing the Buff: divey, dirty, awesome. While some have commented on the clientele (covering such a vast range of humanity), I feel obliged to remark on the bouncers. I have never felt safer drinking on/around Fourth Ave. or downtown, than I have felt at the Buffet. Yeah! At a DIVE! I mean it. A creepy and/or crazy drunk dude so much as spends a minute too long trying to talk to me, and a bouncer would be over his shoulder, making sure I'm alright, checking to see if he needs to intervene. That's not to say you can't send other people drinks and chat up strangers -- you absolutely can. I just have never felt like any other 4th Ave./downtown Tucson bar staff member was so attuned to its patrons to notice someone's body language... or care enough to step in as a college kid's wingwoman. Granted, the Buffet is a lot smaller than other bars, and it's generally well-staffed, but I so appreciated always feeling like someone had my back. One other thing that has gone unmentioned = The Dirty South. It's got SoCo and probably 3 other liquors along with some sour mix (yeah, not the same thing you can find online made from peach liqueur... totally hit me up if you get your hands on a copy of the Buff's recipe). It goes down easy but packs a punch, like so many of the (cheap!) drinks here. And you can't go wrong with Stoli or Maker's. So, go, bring cash and hand sanitizer (for the bathroom). Take your date to see if s/he can hang low-maintenance style; take your buddies to chill and play shuffleboard; meet fellow alum there to reminisce; head there after work, before a concert, to hit happy minute, or just because you need a break from everything else. Tip your bartenders well and soak up a piece of what makes Tucson, well, Tucson. read more

A classic Tucson Dive Bar, you have to visit this place at least once while living in Tucson. They play good music (70s and 80s) and have a shuffle board. They are cheap and they don't skimp on the alcohol. They only accept cash though. read more

Went here because I was told I HAD to try a michelada. Honestly - not a fan of clamato, lime juice, and beer. Not my thing. That said, this place is a perfectly acceptable dive bar. The atmosphere is fun, the drinks are cheap and the people seemed pretty cool, had some fun conversations. read more

Ever been walking in to a bar at 6 a.m. with the rest of the night shift bar patrons (you'll get truckers, street sweepers, or Denny's waiters), when you trip over someone passed out from the evening crowd? Yeah, me neither, until the Buffet. My brother has been accosted here by some old dude claiming to be an ex-Marine, we have watched fights on the parking lot security camera, I have been offered weed, and I have sadly eaten the $1 hot dogs at midnight at the Buffet (newsflash, inflation!! Great jukebox and the Happy Minute (free drink at 6PM and $1 drink at 11PM) is the best deal anywhere near 4th Ave. Maker's & Cokes are only $3.25 and VERY strong... This place is a real dive bar. It's usually crowded inside. The walls are all covered in writing from people who sign their names or write random stuffs. They do this thing called happy minute where you can order a drink for one dollar as long as it's within one minute. A guy comes around and hands out coupons for a dollar drink that you can use as long as it's for the same drink that you currently have. They have a shuffleboard table. Fall 1982; I returned to my home town after a mostly miserable year in Flagstaff and a since departed pal announces that to celebrate he's taking me to the Buffet... I wanted to go get a few drinks and I was not much interested in dinner but when we get there, he ordered an.89 cent screwdriver for himself and dollar "Jumbo" Coors for me; DINNER! Jukebox full of Patsy Klein, Roy Orbison, George Jones, The Doors, Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash... but so much more... back then, if you touched the friggin' Horse Collar (not shuffle-board, playing of which, in fact, is specifically disallowed) table some 80 year old coot would blow you a ton of shit. Food? Sure, hotdogs and pickled boiled eggs come to mind... Crowd? Hard-core homeless to borderline homeless drunks, SS retirees drinking the last few years away, middleagers on their way to the same place and on the weekends loads of UA students... Best Bet? Arrive at 10.26, drink to last call, throw back a jaeger and a jumbo, buy a 6 pack for take out and drive to Nogales, Mex to keep the party going... i dare you! read more

I don't find any joy in this place. It's not a bad place, I just don't think it's great. Most of the seating is around the U shaped bar, its crowded, bright, and they only take cash.The only part I do enjoy is that they have their own parking lot. I still joke with people that you get stabbed there. I once heard a story about a stabbing. Ironically the first time I went there the doorman was outside showing his friends a new knife he bought. My date and I looked at each other knowingly since I had told him I'd never been there since I didn't want to get stabbed. My middle 50s aged father loved this place. And we opened it at 6am before commencement last year. Since then I have "opened" multiple times after finishing an all nighter grading students' work or typing a research paper for my grad program. It's cash only.
