Easily one of the best dives in Tucson, met amazing people from regulars to the staff to even the people who wander in. Only 2 pool tables but depending on the night and time there's a decent chance to find one of them open or people playing will occasionally offer to 2 v 2 for the table. Occasionally a bad apple will wander in and try to cause tension but that's no different than any other bar and it's rarely ever escalated thanks to the amazing staff. Great karaoke and dj nights that get people from their 20s to people in their retired years. Might not necessarily be for everybody, but if you love the place and people it'll love you back. read more

This review is based on our visit on Friday, 2/17/2023. We've made great memories at the Cowpony over the years but had such a bizarre experience this weekend when we came in with a group to celebrate a birthday. The ladies were on the dance floor, the husbands were playing pool. We weren't there for very long when a bouncer approached and said we had to leave because one of the ladies was "a little wobbly", which was laughable since the bounce himself appeared (and smelled) stoned. Not to mention, the incidents of people passing out, vomiting, and urinating on the bar have been witnessed without resulting in ejection from the establishment. The only behavior that was out of line that night was the hostility of the bartender who grabbed my husband's drink and angrily threw it in the trash, glass and all... then slammed our bill down and shoved it at us when we paid for our drinks. Oh, and I can't leave out the creepy guy who kept trying to dance with us, wouldn't take no for an answer, kept reaching for us on the dance floor, and kept swatting our asses to get our attention. I guess the staff is pretty selective on what is acceptable behavior since he was good to stay. I'm not sure if it's a staffing issue they have, but if they keep kicking out good, paying customers in favor of keeping the creeps, good luck! It's such a shame, we used to have so much fun there but we'll be making new memories and taking our business elsewhere from now on. And I'm sure the staff will click this review as "funny" since that's what they do with all the other negative reviews. read more

The oddest crowds frequent here- from bikers to half my high school during the holidays. On any given day you will find both, plus a few freaks here and there. Bartenders are attentive. The bar is a dirty, divey place. Girls dance on the bar, the place gets overly crowded. It smells like beer and vomit. ...still remember the sixty something couple walking around in dominatrix outfits, complete with dog collars. Ewww. For this place, it's normal however. They do have pool tables, which isn't so bad on a off night where you can actually move around without being groped and not even know by who. read more

Parking lot is small and can be a bit tricky, but worth the stop. Great drink specials, friendly staff, live music, good jukebox, shuffleboard, and pool tables. All I can say is... WTF with the 2 star average?? This is one of those 'you gotta compare apples-to-apples' type places for review. This isn't a high falutin' joint... it's a dive bar, and should be judged as such (lump it in with The Mint, The Bay Horse, and The Meat Rack). You want a draft beer for less than $5, and have the *possibility* of witnessing a fight/strip tease/group sing-along? Cowpony is the spot. It's sort of like the Double Deuce from Roadhouse. We went a few weeks ago on a double date with some other married friends. We went in dressed up from a fancy-ish dinner out, but afterwards all I wanted was a few beers and to shout along with some music. There were some bikers, some college preppies, and some other "normal" married folks, all mixed in. No one batted an eye at our heels and khakis. The music was loud, the beers were cheap, and the bartenders were hot hot hot dudes... I mean friendly. Did I say hot? I meant to say friendly, unpretentious, and quick to serve when I approached the bar. Read the writing on the wall... no really, this place is covered with wall scribbles. The great thing about the Cow Pony, aside from the awesome name that reminds me of sexual deeds that have not yet been created, it's a melting pot of people from all walks of life. Ended up at the Cowpony after a night of exploring Tucson's bars. Crowded, obnoxious, piss poor beer selection. My friend watched a guy abuse his date, pick her up, and carry her against her will out a side door. He followed as a safety check, happened to have his beer in hand. Doorman grabbed his beer and threw it in the trash. My friend mentioned that he wasn't finished, and that the door man could have requested he leave it inside. I was just behind as this happened. Next thing I know, the doorman punches my friend in the eye. Another friend stepped up to see what happened, and another guy punches him in the side of the head. Holy Cow Pony!! I go here, rarely, because my friend is a huge fan and sometimes I need to slum it!! Yes, it is an eclectic bar scene with so many different types of people, that it makes for good entertainment. There's bikers, college kids, hipsters, bridal parties, your average Joe, and pretty much any other type of person in attendance. There's several pool tables and other games if you're so inclined. The floor is a cross between sticky and slippery. The women's bathroom is scary. There's one toilet...one freaking toilet...come on, really!! I've been here once. One word comes to mind when I think of the Cow Pony: Crowdcusting. Yes, that is a combination of "crowded" and "disgusting." I didn't know it was humanly possible to cram that many strangers into one tiny little place. As if that weren't bad enough, there are trashy girls getting wasted and being hoisted up onto the bar by their male companions/friends/future rapists and being chanted at the perform. I saw two girls groping each other on a bar. One looked like the other one's grandmother. That was it, I was done. Trying to walk back out of this sardine can, I was groped by a guy who looked old enough to have been around when groping was first invented. I was holding on tight to the back part of my friend Levi's shirt, but that couldn't stop unwanted, overaged, male attention from bringing itself my way. The man grabbed me and said in his drunken state, "Yoush, you, ya--you should be, uppa therrre." I was repulsed and gave my friend a "Get me the Hell out of here, NOW," look. So, we left his friends who were already so drunk they probably wouldn't know that the people they were touching weren't actually hot babes, but were the remnants of what hot babes *were* ... in 1985. It was hot, smelly, unpleasant (to say the very least), but I guess I didn't deserve not to experience this as I was warned before going here that it was "No, I'm not meeting you guys there. Its the trashiest bar on this side of town. Don't go there." *Shrug* In my ten minutes here, I've decided I'll never go back. Take this as a warning: No one will want to meet you there. The only time I went to the Cow Pony it didn't go well. It started with a line to get in. After a fairly substantial wait I made my way to the front door. The bouncer was the first real issue. He wasn't friendly and was a downright dick. He asked for my ID and when I gave it to him he laughed and put it in his pocket! When I asked him what he was doing he said it wasn't my ID and told me to get the hell out! It should be noted that it was actually my drivers license. I offered credit cards and anything else that had my name on it as proof which only made him mad. At this point other people in the line started yelling at me too. When I asked for a manager he flat out said no. So I called the police! It was at that point he went to get the manager. The manager immediately said it was me in the picture and gave it back then let me in. Both the manager and the bouncer seemed upset with me and definitely didn't apologize. Once inside you walk into a sand pit. The floor is sand it will waste no time filling up your shoes. It was crazy loud too. Also, it took forever to get our drinks and you can barely communicate with the bartender because of the noise. I came here for a drink on my birthday.. I had heard it was somewhat a new england bar, or maybe that the owner was a Pats fan, and being from MA i wanted to stop by. The bartender was cold, rude and didn't bother acknowledging my birthday, (hey, i'm not needy but a little smile would be nice).. The crowd was great, locals, bikers, interesting women... I mean it definitely has a good vibe. The bartender (I believe his name was Eric) was completely RUDE to myself and my company, after supposedly calling him the wrong name. He had the worst stink face I have ever seen on, and seemed VERY judgmental of us (maybe we weren't tough enough or as buff as him?? not sure... ) I ended up leaving immediately. However...If you don't care for throw up everywhere (to include anywhere you touch on the bar), a bar so crowded you can't even look right or left, sweating as you wait in a bathroom that probably reaches 145 degrees F, people singing really bad karaoke, waiting for half an hour to get a beer...oh and a dancefloor the size of a nickel....might wanna skip this one! As some others have said, this is not just a biker/cowboy joint, an assumption which kept us away for the first 18 months we lived here, but a melting pot with modern, non-country music. The workers and visitors have been very polite to us, and the drinks are cheap and easy to obtain. Tip your bartender! I really enjoy this bar. (Semi) New to Tucson. I was looking for a bar (for quite some time) that reminded me of home...a dive bar with an added something?! A place without the fanfare that can still hold its own...where you can dance, just hang out...or even read. I found it here. This bar -for me- would be a contender as 'favorite' in any city...including Brooklyn and Philly (home). The bartenders, bar-backs, and door men (people?) are easily the best feature- along with the general company (which spans all ages, personalities...all amazing), great beer, and music that appeals to a variety of interests/ascetics. But, again, it is the staff that really does make this place fun (a lot of fun). They are amazing people who will look out for you, never steer you wrong with drink recommendations, and make the visit there an enjoyable one. So, in other words, tip your bartender!...Tip them well! If your there when Gilbert, Kara, Rich, Bryan, Erik, Eric, Ronnie, John, Drea, Allison and/or Ella are working- you will understand the appeal. They are true gems! read more
