I love the buffet. Yes, its a hole in the wall of a bar. Yes, there are old drunks hanging around most of the time. Yes, the bathroom can be questionable (although the toilet in the ladies bathroom is super fancy). But its just a great place. The bartenders are always entertaining. The crowd is normally pretty awesome. Drinks are cheap and STRONG. Its always a stop when I am bar hopping. read more

The regulars introduce themselves to me every time I'm there, oblivious to the fact I've met them multiple times. They're that drunk but always friendly and not rowdy. The bartenders all got spunk and they aint afraid to show it. But they're all sweethearts as well and they'll remember your order for happy minute without you needing to say a word. The bouncers aren't so friendly but if you're a regular then they'll definitely warm up to you. As a dive bar they get 5 stars, but I'm docking a star for the dive bar restroom. One big shared urinal, it's filthy, good luck finding hand soap. They take great care of you on your birthday though. A shot of your choice and a huge beer. They didn't even hold it against me when I drunkenly stumbled and knocked down a glass. read more

Two words -not sure what its called nowadays Either the BUFFALO FART or GORILLA FART , BUFFALO SWEAT one of those once in a lifetime drinks u just gotta try! Let me put it in perspective for u..... When we used to go to the lake, My best friends uncle wore this old boot around all day at the end of the day as we all sat around the campfire he would pass "The Boot" around an u could put "whatever" u wanted into said boot I.e. Jell-O shots beer, any alcohol , chewing tabbaco , Tabasco, anything except harmful stuff an body fluids. ( u getting the picture yet!) then he would take his foot swish it around an make "Everyone" take a big ole swig, an HE held the boot an the back of ur head to make sure u got some. Let me be the first to tell u, you DO NOT want to be the last to drink otherwise u get all the stuff at the bottom!!! I learned the hard way!! Still makes me twitch to this day! Came to do an afterwork happy hour with wife's coworkers. However they are all night shift folks and places open in the morning are limited. The bartender was great. She kept up with our groups order and was very friendly. The decor is not great but I was impressed with the variety and selection of drinks. The prices were reasonable. It fit our needs of open early, good price and close to work where we could unwind from a 12 hour shift. read more

FYI: not a buffet. However, they did have hot dogs. Definitely one of the dive-iest bars I have been to in my life and that is the exact reason why I enjoyed it. I was in the same precarious situation as my cohort Michael D. We stumbled into this place after cruising the 4th ave festival thanks to the recommendation of our friend. The place is dimly lit by ambient lighting and neon beer signs with the occasional flash of brightness whenever someone opened the door to the outside world. There was an old-looking lady perhaps 70 or 80 years old sitting at the bar adjacent to our table sipping a Foster's and with a fistful of 20's. Turns out, she was the original owner of the place as my friend told me. The story checks out, The Buffet is an old historic establishment and she was an old lady; that was logical enough for me. It definitely gave me the locals vibe, and made me feel that this wasn't a bar for the college kids. So even though The Buffet doesn't have all-you-can-eat, you can drink as much as you want and not be judged. read more

If your looking for a good dive bar the buffet is where its at. They have really cheap drinks and anything goes. They have shuffleboard and if you can get a game it will turn into a good night. The staff are fun and down to have a good time. Its also close to everything downtown and on 4th and its a good start or end location. read more

It's the definition of a dive bar; there's writing all over the walls, it's small, and the bartenders are always loud and entertaining. Chances are you wont remember leaving. My friends love this place, but it's just not my scene. It's crowded, there's nowhere to sit, and it takes quite a bit of effort to get a drink (especially on Happy minute). The rum and cokes we ordered were also watered down a bit. read more

In 1994, The Buffet was voted by the Tucson Weekly as the Best College Bar.... over 15 years later, I'd say it's Tucson's Best Dive Bar. It may not be the "it" spot anymore, but the endearing, yet outdated early 90's vibe still remains, and I feel magnetically drawn to it around 1 AM once I've gotten my fill of the other bars on 4th Ave. It has a dirty feel... but then again, we live in the Dirty T (a nickname for Tucson). The walls are covered in writing (the kind that you usually only find in the bathroom stalls of bars) and crowd is a mix of T-locs and college students alike. The drinks here are cheap, but there are only 3 beers on tap- Coors, Coors Light, and 1554- however if those don't float your boat, you'll just have to resort to a mixed drink. And if for some reason, you're not in the mood to drink- you can always get yourself a hotdog and play some shuffle board! read more

Tucson's oldest bar since 1934 right smack in the middle of a residential neighborhood. The neighbors love it. Drunk Indians, homeless people, college kids, business men, AA dropouts, hipsters, losers, and boozers all mixed into one tiny bar. It's open from 6am to 2am every day, 365. You have 4 hours to sober up. Pass out on the front lawn of some unsuspecting nearby frat house and wake up and do it all over again. read more

The criteria for dive bar excellence include cheap, strong drinks, skeezy, sticky bar and eclectic regulars with a strong emphasis on the blue collar and those with jailhouse ink. The dive bar epicure might take offense to the meager food choices - overcooked hot dogs in a greasy carnival glass-front roaster and some sort of pickled item (perhaps eggs, but the gelatinous goo is too viscous to tell) are about the extent of it. The bathroom walls and indeed all walls are covered in enthusiastic drunken ranting which is not as philosophical as, say, the highbrow musings of university-proximate Bob Dobb's or the legendary bathroom poetry/clip art at the now-defunct Berky's. However, if the barbarity of parking lot brawling and the perils of stumbling over supine lawn drunks isn't too repellent, The Buffet satisfies that dive bar jones that strikes us all from time to time after cuing up The Replacements "Here Comes a Regular" on your oldies mix. The Buffet is the true nadir of the dive bar scene and we rarely visit because it leaves the same sad taste in my mouth as a visit to the Humane Society...am I the only one who feels ashamed? read more

MEH. This is a dive bar, no doubt. Even if you like dive bars, which I do, this is an annoying place to be. There's a weird mix of young and old people, and of course like most dive bars its pretty dirty. Both bartenders that were on the night I went were pretty rude. THIS PLACE ONLY ACCEPTS CASH. I ordered a couple drinks and when i handed them my card I was pointed in the direction of their very crowded atm. By the time I get the cash from the atm the bartender had given my drink away FOR FREE to someone else. Such crap! read more

The Buffet is Tucson's oldest bar. Open from 6:00am to 2:00am. Originally a diner and class six it hosts a single pool table as well as bar-style shuffle board. The Buffet is the home of "The Jumbo" the largest pour of draft beer in the bar. Considering the only beer they have on tap is Coors Original, you just can't lose. For those of you with expansive pallets- don't worry, they have anything you could want in a bottle and they are liberal with their booze. This is the bar you crave when you want a Cheers-style atmosphere with a stiff drink. Don't be surprised to run into the occasional drunk Indian as well as the hottie 21-year-old U of A babe. For your birthday, they provide (at no charge) a "yard" of beer with a shot of your choice! Just surrender your DL until you return the glass and you're good to go! The bar/security staff are hands-down the friendliest in town and are thankful for your business. If you're in Tucson and haven't gone you're missing out.
