Our server was very difficult to find throughout the evening and only checked on us about twice, if not one of us raising our hand flagging her down. The food itself was very hit or miss. The vegetable appetizers were easily the highlight of the meal! The side dishes were genuinely delicious and had much more interesting flavor and balance than the main dishes. Unfortunately, the main dishes were extremely salty while somehow still lacking depth, spice, and actual seasoning. We ordered the goat curry and grilled chicken, which was recommended by our server. We were also disappointed by how some dishes represented different cuisines without much cultural context. For example, the goat curry is inspired by South African cuisine, but this wasn't indicated on the menu or explained to us by our server until after the fact. Traditionally, that style of curry is commonly eaten with a starch such as rice or a flatbread, so when we asked about having rice with the curry, we were surprised to learn that rice was not available and that we would need to order naan separately if we wanted it. If we are going to emphasize cultural representation in a dish, shouldn't that context also extend to how the dish is traditionally served or at least be explained when ordering? Otherwise, it can feel like the cultural identity of the dish is being adapted primarily for a Western palate rather than thoughtfully represented. This stood out because the restaurant describes itself as having "global influence and bold flavors" while creating dishes inspired by California produce and local flavors. We expected that philosophy to come through much more strongly. Instead, the menu felt somewhat random, and the dishes didn't feel like they belonged to a cohesive culinary story. Even small details, like the somewhat low resolution logo image on the menu, contributed to the impression that the overall concept wasn't as intentional as we'd expected. On a positive note, the drinks were really good, and the vegetable appetizers were definitely the bright spot of the meal! Sadly, dessert was just okay and, again, felt somewhat disconnected from the restaurant's stated identity. Overall, we were excited to experience something different, so this wasn't simply a matter of the dishes not appealing to us personally. Venue 5 stars: Beautiful, charming historical building originally designed in 1928 by architect Roy Seldon Price for Charlie Chaplin as a mixed office/store complex. More recently it housed LaBrea Bakery and the Campanile Restaurant before Republique opened in 2013. A few outdoor tables as well as many indoor community and private standard and high tables, and a full bar. There are also some seating upstairs, sometimes reserved for private groups. They in fact operate two distinct Republique restaurants here. Morning to 2 PM they serve breakfast and lunch and bakery items. It's a more casual order-at-the-counter-and-they-bring-it-to your table set-up. At night it's a formal sit-down restaurant. Republique has become a huge tourist spot and you see a lot of international visitors there. Billing 1 star: They charge a 4% surcharge up and above the prices on the menu. I find this confusing and misleading. Why not simply reflect this in your prices? Service 4 stars: Polite and to the point. Food 4 stars: New American fare with French influences. I have only been there for breakfast and lunch and cannot rate the fancier dinner items. My favorites are the Lobster Omelet, the Mushroom Toast and the Croque Madame. I found the Eggs Benedict and the Steak Frites a bit underwhelming. The Eggs Benedict lacked flavor and the steak was a little tough and chewy... I also felt that the Fingerling Potatoes and the French Fries were way too salty. Drinks 4 stars: Full bar, specialty cocktails and coffee/matcha. No mainstream soft drinks.
