Staff was at the door greeting people walking by telling us to come in. We decided to give it try and have a drink. Walking in it was pretty roomy. The tables were made out of old tools. That was very cool. The only thing about that is the glasses did not sit evenly on the table. I was not able to set down my wine glass. The staff was not to friendly. They were annoyed we came in. The bartender was busy and the guy who invited us in became very short with us when we asked questions. They do not serve liquor. Only wine and beer. A pretty good variety of beer from all kinds of different breweries. When it was close to last call, they walked around cleaning up around you and made you feel rushed. Brickwood is cool. It was referred to me by some of the Employees at nearby place. I've been here 3 times now and have a pretty good handle on the vibe. It's divey, but large for a dive bar. They have lots of San Diego beers on tap. I'm from San Diego and typically see San Diegan's in here. The first time I went the bartender was a little rude, but knew his craft beer. For that, I can let a little rudeness slide. Just pick out a good beer for me. He did so. Twice. He also lightened up as the night went on. On this night they had a vegan pizza vendor in the back. It didn't look like what I'd imagine a vegan pizza to look like. It looked good. There is a another girl that works there. She looks about college age. She's consistently cool and has been there each time that I've gone to Brickwood. My most recent visit on Saturday had a super down-to-earth bartender. He was there before the rude-turned-gracious bartender showed up for the late shift. I say "rude" but he was probably just tired of answering the same questions 300x per shift. On this night there were at least 3 large groups. I know one was a book club. Another group was like 20 ppl at the big table. The vibe drinks and service were awesome. My girl loves it there. But, the specific and cute descriptions of what's in store for your mouth as give your order delivers essentially every time. The only draws backs that I can think of: No tastings are given, but this is supplemented by the price being added to whatever you end up selecting. The bathrooms are so drab, it's insanely upsetting. I mean, cmon, you walk in with a gnarly rustic piano next to the entrance with some beautiful stained glass window hanging up above. There's a bison sticking out of the wall and overlooking all the drunken revelry taking place. You make your way past the bar with the amazinnnnng selection of beer, towards the back and down the alley-like corridor towards the bathroom. Where one might be expecting a quaint and peculiar bathroom to match the quirky atmosphere of the rest of Brickwood, it simply falls flat.
