Village Lanes is a no frills, no nonsense bowling alley. When you come here, you can expect to bowl without much distraction. There aren't any strobe or neon lights and there's no loud blaring music. But there is a great atmosphere for a fun filled afternoon with the family to bowl a few games, have some snacks and soft drinks/beers and do all that at a bargain. It's $5 per person per game and $6 for shoe rentals. There's a small kitchen that has all the classic bowling fair. You can get burgers, hot dogs, chicken tenders, fries and a soft pretzel as some of the options. They have beer on tap as well as bottled and cans. A pitcher costs $12.50 of domestic beer and that's a bargain! The bowling alley is old, the technology is from the '90s as you can see from my photos. All the staff was nice and welcoming and were happy to explain and assist in all aspects. Next to the register is a old punch clock and a old green screen computer which made me feel nostalgic because I haven't seen that technology in ages.

So this place isn't called Village Lanes Bowling Center anymore, now it's The Branch. After rebranding the older bowling alley we decided to check it out during our Fall break. The transformation was great! First, each of the lanes is named after various cities in Loudoun, and we were lucky enough to get the Middleburg lane! The animations and face photos make the experience really fun and interactive. There was a ball at the register that you can use to measure your size (S/M/L) which helped the kids a lot. You also pay by the hour and not necessarily by the game which worked for us. It's pretty reasonable since we got two games in with three players. It wasn't very crowded when we went in the early afternoon on a Wednesday so not sure how busy it is during weekends. We ordered the kids slider, kids chicken tenders, and The Loudoun (parmesan-crusted chicken in a lemon caper sauce with roasted veggies over angel hair pasta) to eat. It said they use locally sourced ingredients which is nice. We all agreed - we would come back just for the food since it was all SO delicious!! Even the french fries were very tasty. Bonus, it's delivered right to your lane area and the seating is really spacious. The wait staff was super friendly and accommodating too. There's also plenty of parking outside the bowling alley. Overall I highly recommend you check it out. We will visit the arcades next time we are in the area too.

I do not plan to return and would not recommend this location unless major improvements are made. Before booking, I called to ask about compensation for shoe rentals since everyone in my party owns their own bowling shoes and equipment. I was told food or beverage compensation would be provided. However, when we arrived, the front desk staff seemed confused, and after a long delay, we were given arcade credit instead, which was not what was promised. Once we began bowling, the lane condition was unacceptable. Staff confirmed the lane had not been oiled in over two days and it was visibly dirty. It took over 30 minutes to clean my bowling ball and another 30 minutes to clean my girlfriend's. The lack of oil caused the ball to behave unpredictably, making proper play nearly impossible and risking damage to our equipment. The group bowling next to us repeatedly ignored basic bowling etiquette--throwing multiple balls at once and launching them excessively hard. At one point, a ball bounced into our lane, which was unsafe. One female staff member did her best to address the issue and deserves credit, but the behavior resumed shortly after. This situation highlighted a need for better staff training and consistent rule enforcement. There were also frequent scoring issues, as the pinsetter incorrectly registered frames and required constant manual corrections. The food was equally disappointing--the pretzel sticks tasted stale, as if reheated and left sitting. For nearly $100 for two hours of bowling, I expected a much better experience. The high prices, poor lane conditions, mediocre customer service, and lack of oversight made this an extremely frustrating visit. This location feels more like "boutique bowling" and is not suited for serious or competitive bowlers.

The zip line is pretty fun, even for adults. The staff are pretty helpful in explaining how things work and assist in putting on the harness and taking it off. The slide is also really fun, you get a mat to slide on and go down head-first on what seems a 90 degree plummet and land on an inflatable pillow. One thing I did see people struggling with is the anchoring point of the harness to the rock climbing rig. You gotta have some strength to properly rig it and kids often need assistance. In some of the reviews I read prior to visiting, people said it gets really busy on the weekends and the lines can really put a damper on the experience. We chose to go on a weekday and there were no lines.

Safety is, of course, a top priority, but the current setup is completely inefficient. There simply aren't enough staff members to strap in patrons quickly, leading to an excessive line that ate into the time we paid for. To make matters worse, the climbing walls and ropes course require separate harnesses, forcing kids to stand in line TWICE just to participate. If I had paid for two hours and spent half of that just waiting, I would be beyond frustrated. This setup is unfair to families who expect to actually enjoy the attractions--not just stand in line. I strongly encourage management to look at how other adventure parks operate and adopt a more efficient system. More harness stations and dedicated staff at multiple locations throughout the park would make a huge difference. If things don't change, I imagine many customers (myself included) will hesitate to return and may even request refunds. How can a business thrive if paying guests spend more time waiting than playing? I truly hope improvements are made because this place has so much potential--but right now, it's just not working.

I found the Midway boring, the Town small, the Trail extensive but not very scary/surprising, and the prices outrageous. Markoff's charged $70 for a Town + Trail combo ticket. Ok, fine, for a unique experience I paid it. I don't think it's terrible compared to concerts, Renn Fest, and other experiences. But I thought the overall quality would be higher. At the Midway, I expected more entertainment and activities. Compared to a Renn Fest, which has tons of shows and activities going on, there is almost nothing at the Markoff's Midway. There were a few food stands (tacos, nachos, and pupusas; cotton candy; donuts; waffles; cotton candy; smores), one bar, a merch store, a small art store, face painting, a zip line, and a log rolling activity. The only entertainment I saw was a pretty tame fire dancer at one point. They played DJ music but song choices were often odd, like Elton John (doesn't say "Haunted Forest" to me). Everything cost more money to do. Beer was an outrageous $15. Tacos $8 for one (but did get good reviews from my friends). Lines were long because they only had one person checking IDs and one cashier, and no one had any hustle. Overall, it was boring. I did the Town first. You wait in a line to be driven in a group to the town. The ride there didn't have any decorations or scares which was a missed opportunity. The Town itself was a fairly basic path in and out of some rooms. Some of the decorations were neat. There were some attempted scares and surprises, but this heavily depends on where you are in your group and if you are close to the group ahead of you -- either people in your own group or the next group can spoil the scare/surprise. There were some actors and some dummies and animatronics. Actors were okay but some were overacting high schoolers. It was pretty short. My immediate reaction was, "That's it?" The Trail was much longer and more substantial than the Town. It is clear this is the main event. It was very long and winding, had lots of different themed areas, and lots of props, decor, animatronics, and actors. But everything felt a little low quality. Many of the themes were old timey, like a crypt; I would have liked a few more modern horror settings like a morgue or hospital. Some of my favorite decor was some old cars near the end because they felt more real than other area. I also would have liked some longer, more involved themed areas; instead, the themes felt short and shallow. Like, give me a whole haunted church to explore instead of just one room. They could also have more creative scares/surprises, like with people above you or below you. Scares/surprises could have been good if not often ruined by people ahead. I'm glad I gave it a shot but I don't recommend it. I would read reviews carefully before doing another haunted house/forest.

Since areas were not sectioned off by age, it was a bit of a free for all with older kids chasing each other and bouncing each other or doing flips without always being mindful of their surroundings. While a lot of the kids seemed to be having a great time, we did see a few younger kids get hurt.
