This charming inn was the best food we had during our trip to England and Wales. It's tiny and very local... When my family of five showed up at 6.30 on a Wednesday the waitress had to check to see if the kitchen was going to be open tonight or not. There were a couple of obvious regulars and us. The room looked more like a living room with a few tables in it than a formal restaurant (with nooks off to the side for people who were doing more drinking than eating).
The food was AMAZING. My two and 6 year old both had soft boiled eggs and toast soldiers - hard to go wrong with that but these were spot on. My 9 year old had pasta and he said "the cheese melted into the pasta and so you could taste the cheese with every bite but it didn't have a gooey cheese look. It was the best pasta ever, not soggy or crunchy but perfect" - high praise from a 9 year old.
They also cook adult food very, very well. My husband had salmon which was fresh and flaky, cooked to just barely past translucent in the center. Lovely herbed light sauce. I had a duck and cress and broiled orange salad which was fantastic. The duck was falling off the bone and the combination of flavors was dynamic.
Boot inn makes their ice-cream in house. If you go, you need to have the mince pie ice cream! The kids also tried the strawberry (very good) and banana (outstanding!) I had the date-toffee pudding - dark, rich, not overwhelmingly sweet, a very adult dessert. I had 4 more toffee puddings over the next week and none of them came close to the greatness of the one at Boot Inn.
The waitress went way out of her way to make sure we were comfortable and happy and was great with the children.
If we make it here again (sadly unlikely since we're from the USA) I'm going to bring a larger appetite or someone other than my husband and children since they had a cured meat platter which included pigeon and house cured salmon and several other amazing sounding things I couldn't get my family to try.
We only stopped here because it was close to Stonehenge and we wanted to eat before we drove on. We almost turned back before we got there because the sign from the road made it look like one of the touristy "Ye Olde Shoppe" type of places. I'm so glad we kept going!! read more
