A great pub in the heart of Bath, filled with great people and wonderful staff! I loved their adorable icon of the Raven taking stroll. The 3 story pub has lovely, warm, very British ambience. The Raven's food has a strong focus on hot pies, with a nice selection including Steak N Ale, Venison, Chicken, Beef N Cheese, Jackfruit, and Mushroom. My venison pie was delicious! The gamey meat was tender and succulent. I accidently ate into my wife's jackfruit pie...it was so good that I mistakenly thought it was my venison pie! £20 for any hot pie 'LOADED' which came with chips or Mash, plus heaps of roast vegetables and seasonal greens. It'll fill you up, and deliciously! Side Story: they accidently gave my wife a Chicken Pie instead of the Jackfruit Pie. The staff was so overwhelming apologetic about the error, and they refunded our ENTIRE bill! We said a small discount or just her pie being comped would've been more than fine, but they insisted on refunding the entire amount. read more

This is an old English pub that serves several beers and ale and has several dining areas from the bar to the restaurant both downstairs and upstairs . For sure one of our favorite pubs! It's a traditional family-owned and run Free House (which means, unlike many pubs in Bath and across the UK now they're not tied to any other business or brewery). Why wouldn't you want to support an independently operated pub with two additional floors AND outdoor seating AND delicious pints and pies AND no loud music/technology (outside of free WiFi) AND feels like a real locals place? For us, this is exactly what we're looking for! They don't take reservations, just show up and they'll try and accommodate you. This means a lot of milling about waiting for other people to get up and move on so you can claim their table real quick; once you've got a spot, then head-up to the bar to order. They offer real ale (brewed specially for them), along with other beers, wine, spirits, and ciders. They also offer big hot pies on a bed of mash or homemade chips with gravy, *and* they have a vegetarian and vegan option. The Mooless Moo is a jackfruit "steak", ale, and black pepper pie that's delicious and filling. They had vegan mash last we visited too, but now their website says the chunky chips are the only vegan option (so are the mushy peas, but skip those; honestly, just ask the bartender what's available, they'll know!). For a laid back night in Bath, The Raven is an absolute must. read more

My wife and I were in Bath traveling when I asked the security guard at the Roman Baths where he would go to dinner. He recommended The Raven and specifically told me to order the pie. We were not disappointed! My wife got the pie and I ordered the stew. I was thrown off by the mint used in the peas but the food and beer was phenomenal. My wife very much enjoyed sitting upstairs in the library but the atmosphere downstairs was lively and friendly with good conversations happening between old and new friends. This was our first stop for lunch in Bath and we were not disappointed. Great place for real ale and Cornish meat pies.

Had a great traditional English meal of bangers (sausages) and mash (mashed potatoes) with a delicious gravy. We wanted to make sure we got our vegetables so ordered sides of mashed peas! It was all delicious and befitting a rainy night in Bath. The place is funky/fun and we'd recommend going to the upstairs dinning area. I took a day trip over to Bath on a rainy day to do some touristy things. On my train ride over, I was talking to someone and they recommended this place. Decided to come here in the afternoon since it was close by to where I was walking around and was glad that I came. The building itself is multistory, with each floor having a bar. Food can be ordered on the first floor and afterwards you can choose where you want to sit. Decided to go for some meat pies because the guy on the train recommended it. Got one with chicken and steak - both of which were absolutely fantastic. The filling for both were quite delicious. Makes me wish we had these in the states. Service itself was also good. Bartenders and workers were all friendly and they did a good job in helping customers out. Would love to come back again in the future to try some of their other menu options! read more

Still a good experience, but I kinda feel like I should be giving the Pieminister folks the five star review. Thanks to the UK-based reviewer who mentioned that this is the case. My original review: The Raven marked our first traditional pub experience in the UK, and it was all-around delightful. The crowd, which ebbed and flowed during our visit, seemed to be primarily locals with some tourists mixed in. This being a pub, we decided to try a couple of different beers and ciders, but there were also wine and liquor options as well, and I did see people partaking in all sorts of drinks. I wasn't sure if it would be considered weird to order wine in a traditional pub, but there were plenty of people drinking it, and the menu appeared to be carefully curated. We had the Young's London Stout (excellent; a bit more chocolatey than a Guinness) and I also tried a Cheddar Valley Cider, which was interesting, and surprisingly not carbonated. To the uninitiated (i.e. me) that aspect may be a bit off-putting. We ordered dinner as well, and although they brought us our food to our downstairs table, it seemed more common to order food upstairs. The stars of the menu are clearly the pies: they have quite a few varieties. My boyfriend tried the free ranger pie (free range chicken, ham, leeks, cheese, and mustard) and he ate every bite. I'm not vegan, but the Kevin Vegan (mushrooms, tomatoes, red wine, baby onions, and thyme) looked too tasty to resist, and I think I indeed made a good choice. Add in some buttery mashed potatoes below, some savory, succulent sage + onion gravy on top, and the crispy-on-the-outside yet slightly gooey-on-the-inside crust, and yep, you have yourself some truly delectable pie, even without the meat. The rich flavor of the dish was really (wonderfully) dominated by the savory spices. I savored every bite. read more

Took a day trip to Bath during our recent London vacation. It's a really cool little town about 3 hours outside of London. We had a few hours to kill so we stopped into The Raven to grab some lunch and a beer. They do allow children but they must be 14 or older. It's a 2 story pub that serves great food. Our group ordered various meat pies. You get a choice of chips (fries) or mustard mash for the side. Every pie we tried was amazing. Flaky crust and excellent filling. I had the Raven Ale pie which is a beef mixture and a sauce made with their Raven Ale beer. Excellent! The mustard mash sounded a little strange but I really liked it. The mustard seeds provided a little texture and tang which worked great with the meat pie. Great place and if I ever find myself in Bath again I will definitely be back! read more

Cosy pub. Upstairs for kids/families and anyone who wants a little more quiet . Second bar upstairs. Staff friendly. Came here to try the pies. Love that they had a gluten free pie. Was okay. Everyone else liked the novelty of trying pies but they were not standout but not bad either - basically nice to say we tried them but we'd never go back again for more. Can't rate the house ales as we didn't have any. Seems to be a nice place to settle in for a rest after a day of touring around. read more

We got mushy peas, but I think mushy peas still need to grow on us haha. Everything is really delicious, but careful with the gravy, it can get a tad salty at the end. Our second pub and meal experience in the U.K.! We bookmarked The Raven because we saw their interesting pie and mash (mashed potatoes) photos. For me, I'm also in it for the ales. The hubby was in it solely for the pies. Half of the pub places you go, you'll noice that you order/pay at the bar first. When we went around 6pm, the bar areas (both levels) were pretty crowded already. We got the beef pie with mash(ed potatoes) & the feta pie with chips (fries). Both were delicious with the red wine gravy! I kind of wished that mine had a little more gravy, but the mash probably soaked it all up. The gravy was really great with the hubby's chips! I also enjoyed tasting the local cider (alcoholic of course - we were at a pub after all). If you are ok with pubs or bars for dining, you will enjoy the charm of this local watering hole if you are visiting Bath! read more

Walked into this fine establishment at the recommendation of some family while we were there to celebrate a graduation. I enjoyed a Porter and a cider, both lovely. Everyone really was enjoying the cider and the meat pies were top notch, excellently rich, crust had a great bite, and saucey so that they coated the chips and mash. Following my intuition (and all the great Yelp reviews) we chose the Raven for dinner our first night in Bath. The dinner turned out to be one of the best we had during our two weeks in he UK. I am not sure if the pies were based on Sweeney Todd's original cannibalistic recipes but boy were they good! We ordered a Deer Stalker, Fungi Chicken and a Heidi and each was distinct and delicious. Paired up with come pints of beer and cider we could not have asked for a tastier dinner. Even as a meat eater, I have to admit the Heidi may have been my favorite. The vegetable and goat cheese filling was perfectly seasoned and balanced. I'm not sure if Jane Austen dined here but I know she would have loved it. read more

We were touring Bath for the day with a local guide. She recommended the Raven for lunch, but when I went in and was ignored, then laughed at by the bar tender and the locals eating there, I promptly walked out. I simply asked for a table for three people. What's funny about that? I was humiliated and left. If you have lived in Bath for your entire life and have the records to prove it, this may be the right place for you, but if not, beware and don't try it. Incredible. I was in Bath for two days and my friend told me about two places in the city, Bath Spa and The Raven. Needless to say I wasn't disappointed in his suggestion. Once you walk in you feel instantly at home. The man behind the bar says hello and asks you what you're having. They have Bath Ales on tap and they are delicious. I tried the Raven and the Raven Ale and would recommend both. I ended up ordering some food and got the Raven Ale Pie with mash and Guinness gravy. I had to roll myself out of the pub when I was done but it was well worth it. Towards the end I felt like I was in a episode of Cheers with the regulars engaging in a lively debate about god knows what, I wish Norm was there. The choices of the gravy are red wine or Guinness -- I prefer the red wine which wasn't as thick and went well with the mash. If you're pressed for time, I wouldn't recommend the hot pies. Tucked away behind Bath's busy high street, The Raven is my favourite pub in the city centre. Because they're not tied into one particular brewery it means they're able to give you the very best in local ales, ciders as well as some delicious wines. The staff are extremely knowledgeable about the drinks they serve so don't hold back if you have any questions. There are two levels; a small, intimate bar downstairs and a larger space above which is better suited for bigger groups of people. The atmosphere is always merry at The Raven, and they attract a mixed clientele from old men who fancy a quiet drink on their own, to groups of students celebrating finishing their dissertations. Great find. Very authentic ... As a tourist from the US, I almost felt like the character at the bar was playing a part. We stopped in here after a day of looking around Salisbury and Bath and were surprised to find that A) they had vegetarian pies that didn't involve mushrooms (though there is a fungi option for those who don't hate mushrooms like I do), B) the beer wasn't the typical Fuller's selection and we were able to enjoy some Raven-specific pints unlike what we have at home, and C) kids aren't really allowed there but they let us bring in our teens anyway - thank you! Because visiting this pub and eating those pies was a highlight of Bath and maybe of our trip to England in general. Definitely recommend this place and don't bring your kids. read more
