Great find. Very authentic ... As a tourist from the US, I almost felt like the character at the bar was playing a part. We stopped in here after a day of looking around Salisbury and Bath and were surprised to find that A) they had vegetarian pies that didn't involve mushrooms (though there is a fungi option for those who don't hate mushrooms like I do), B) the beer wasn't the typical Fuller's selection and we were able to enjoy some Raven-specific pints unlike what we have at home, and C) kids aren't really allowed there but they let us bring in our teens anyway - thank you! Because visiting this pub and eating those pies was a highlight of Bath and maybe of our trip to England in general. Definitely recommend this place and don't bring your kids. read more

Lovely place. Good staff. Raven ale pie was solid. Thick crusted, doused in gravy and mash, with a layer of tender meat enclosed- nothing to nitpick about! Solid Raven Gold ale as well. Definitely fresh, can taste the English love for ale. The only thing that may have lost them a star was the time it took for the food to come out!! Waiter had to run up and down the stairs to report that 40+ pies were on the order and kitchen was heavily backed up. Silver lining is the chef never took a shortcut and took whatever time he felt was needed to make it right. AND since I was running late to the bus, they wrapped it up for me in foil even though I'm certain they've NEVER had to doggy-bag a meat pie before (nor do they necessarily condone the concept). Excellent! Tough getting a table because it is so busy but look upstairs to see if there is availability. Had the soup of the day which was carrot/parsnip. Awesome! I really wanted to try one of the meat pies but it was so early in the day. I was eying up the plates at the tables next to me and they looked divine. I will absolutely try next time. I can't believe we stumbled upon this while walking the streets of Bath. We got to our hotel extremely late and walked around finding a place to eat. The Raven was PACKED (which is always a good sign!) We were lucky enough to grab a seat as some people were leaving. It seems to be first come first serve. This was my first time having a meat pie, but I went a little crazy and got a vegetarian. I ordered the Heidi which had spinach, goat cheese and all sorts of goodness. Hubs got one of the traditional pies but oddly enough, he liked mine better. They had a great beer selection also. During my day trip to Stonehenge and Bath, my partner and I found this place after reading several very positive Yelp reviews... and boy were they right! The Raven is only a quick 7 minute walk away from the Roman Baths and the Bath Abbey off on a more quieter street. The place wasn't touristy and overly noisy so I felt like I had found a hidden gem. The downstairs is very pub-ish, but there is an upstairs which is slightly more dining-friendly. We ordered two ciders and a different pie each - I had the Raven Ale pie on top of mashed potatoes (mash) with raven ale gravy and my partner had the Free Ranger pie on top of chips (fries) with raven ale gravy. I was able to try each pie and I loved both but preferred my Raven Ale pie slightly more. The portions were perfectly sized, and it was all for a reasonable price. The Raven was recommended to us as THE place to get a pie in Bath. So, up for a few pints and a meal on the cheap (because pies are meant to be cheap, right?), we were absolutely looking forward to our visit. We walked into a tiny pub filled to the brim with regulars. When we asked about food we were told that there was a larger space upstairs where we might be more comfortable eating. Excellent. Pints in hand, we headed upstairs. One of us tried The Raven's own brew, which was... fine, but I discovered that I'm not terribly keen on English real ale. The old addage of "warm and flat" comes to mind. The pies that The Raven is apparently famous for aren't made there, but rather by an external company and bought in - at least that's the impression we got from the menu. Pies are served with chips or mash, and gravy of your choice. I wish the gravy was an add-on rather than built into what you're paying for as the pie I ordered (sweet potato, spinach and goats cheese) was far from improved by the gravy. Beyond this, I've had a sweet potato, spinach, goats cheese pie before and it was amazing. This pie was lacking in everything... seasoning, filling, everything. It's like you're meant to be fooled by the copious amounts of thick salty goo that is meant to pass for gravy, and machine-made mashed potatoes. All of this paired with the hefty price tag or something like £9 a pie... we were unimpressed. We were seriously unimpressed. We filled our bellies, paid our due, and went in search of a pub where we could find nicer beer and nicer surroundings to try to help us forget the stodgy mediocre meal that sat in our bellies. read more

The Raven is a nothing out of this world - just a good, solid, traditional pub which a good range of drinks and cosy atmosphere. But then what's to complain about that? Situated in Bath's city centre it's easily accessible and offers a welcome break from the area's many chain cafes, bars and restaurants. There always seems to be a sizeable, but relaxed crowd and the staff are more than happy to help if you're indecisive over your drinking choice. A girl in a cafe had recommended a pub that served food. When we arrived at said pub, a man approached us on the street and asked us if we where looking to eat good pub food. We said we where looking for pies and gravy and he highly recommended The Raven - for this, I thank him deeply... Thank you unnamed man. The Raven serves a selection of fantastic crusty pies with a choice of rich gravies, with either mash or chips for only £8.80 each. We both had a steak pie, with mash, one with Guiness and onion gravy and the other with thyme and red wine gravy. Both pies where exceptionally good; densely packed with meat and vegetables. The gravies where distinctly different but both excellent and the mash was perfect - lumpy and bumpy, with a real earthy taste - yet still smooth and light. The Raven had a wide selection of real ales, largers and ciders. They carry local beverages as well. In terms of the atmosphere, the Raven hit the nail on the head. Dark, warm and friendly - with lots of places to sit and chat. The staff where friendly and helpful too. If I'm ever in Bath again - I'll be sure to visit The Raven. Recommended. read more

The bartender let us sample almost all of the beers to make sure we found one that we each liked. We were told to order a pie, so a pie is what we ordered. Got the Raven with mash and it was enough of a portion to split even though I wanted to eat more of it. Stopped in during my whirlwind tour of Bath. Pleasant with lots of character, and a good beer selection. I had the pork and leek bangers and chips, which I can say were savoury and delicious. I'd go back for a hearty meal for sure. Not sure I understand the hype about the pies though... we came here on a recommendation from a friend about the pies, but I didn't end up getting one, because they're actually all Pieminister pies. Not that those are bad, but... as a chain store, I've had a lot of Pieminister in London... and in Cardiff even... So certainly not an experience you can't get elsewhere. That's not a knock though! Great pies. Small in size, but heavy and filling. I have never eaten one with gravy before but I tried it out here. I was not disappointed. Beers were great. Smooth and as expected, high in alcohol content. Nice decor and staff was very friendly. I would say 80% of the poeple eating a late lunch there were foreigners based on their accents. The Raven is one of my favourite Bath pubs- lovely traditional decor with wooden bar and benches etc. (complete with rude pictures), it's very cosy but there's still a fair amount of room- particularly upstairs where there's another bar. This is a real ale (and, to some extent, cider) pub with a good few options on tap including a selection of their own brew, which isn't too bad.They host the occasional arts talk and take part in a few events, so it always seems a good part of the community. I can't comment on the pie, alas, as I only ever use the Raven as a watering hole. It smells good but looks expensive! read more

From students to thinking locals, The Raven provides a well stocked library as well as a good selection of beers, and has the atmosphere of a totally chilled student bar that grew up. Tastefully decorated (half with paint and half with bookshelves and reading group notices) The Raven also serves up some interesting beers on tap and Mead of all things - yes, we tried it, yes, it's extremely sweet. The upstairs allows views of the centre of Bath and gives you some sophisticated perspective - expect to feel superior and contemplative. We wish we'd had the chance to eat here as the pies looked incredible. Not sure if raven pie is on the menu but if it isn't - it should be! read more

This typical-looking British pub is anything BUT typical. This pub prides itself on two things. First, with being untethered from the constricting management from drink distributors, which means they have an awesome selection of tasty and relatively affordable elixirs. Secondly, their PIES!! This was my first time ever having authentic British pies, and it was awesome! The Raven was a pretty unique pub, and I couldn't help but think of Edgar Allan Poe every time I saw the sign...My friends and I came on a Friday for dinner, and the place was packed with locals. Luckily, we found seating upstairs which turned out to be a more open space for eating. I'm usually not a big red meat fan but I ordered the classic Raven Ale pie served with mash and a Guinness & Red Onion gravy. The pie itself was very filling and I must have been starving at first because I managed to polish off most of the pie before I finally succumbed to food coma. I definitely recommend sharing a dish with someone if you want to stay awake to talk with company! The gravy was also savory & delicious. I couldn't taste the Guinness but it went well with the rest of the dish. I didn't try any of the drinks but it seemed like there was a good selection, and my friends and I had a great time here. We always seem to wind up here after a trip to the Roman baths. Nice selection of local ales, some that are exclusively served at The Raven. I'm a big fan of the Raven ale, which is a tasty dark session beer. The menu is filled with an extensive selection of meat pies and a few other miscellaneous dishes. The pies are good, perhaps not the best in town, but tasty enough. I've had the Raven's Ale pie and my wife tried the Heidi pie, both of which we enjoyed. read more

Hands down, our most authentic pub experience so far this trip. The beer selection is diverse and decadent. 10%ABV Russian Imperial Porter? Yes, please! But how can this be an authentic pub experience with cask ales like an RIP? Locals getting feisty with each other and then laughing over pints, REAL delicious food with great gravy, and barkeeps that throw out the best one-liners. This pub has struck an excellent balance between the traditional and modern. A comfortable venue for an evening of slow sozzlement, it feels like an old local (which it is) but updated. Spearheading the real ale revival in Bath, the Raven also serves a vast range of pies with your choice of mash and gravy. On weekends, getting a table can be a bit tricky but its well worth waiting. They also serve a wide range of regional beers and (unusually) several kinds of cider. Inside and out looks like a traditional pub (looks tiny but there's plenty of space upstairs). I have always noted the busyness of this Pub - particularly amongst the Bath rugby crowd on a Saturday. Thought I'd give it a go one Friday. Empty when I came in but then a briskish trade. Suits real ale drinkers - unfortunately because of my advancing years I went for my normal dry White wine. Mixed crowd of regulars ( oldish) plus more trendy student types. Yes, the pies here are very good and the pub is attractive with a great selection of ales which I prefer over beer. It is hard to park, however, but when one finally sits down it is comfortable and warm like a good pub should be. The servers are very nice and cute and reccomended a peek upstairs which we did as suggested and found it rather nice and quieter than the first floor bar. I love Bath and if you are walking and tired this is a good spot to plop into. read more
