There used to be no lines and the hipsters looking for the next happening brunch spot would be far far away in some pretentious "upscale-but-actually-terrible-but-still-overpriced" restaurant. You're here for the breakfast basics and you're happy about it. They do have some great specials daily but they tend to focus on the main part of the meal instead of a gimmick. For example: The fancy french toast is still a great fluffy french toast with just a little extra toppings. What more could you ask for? Oh and it's cheap! $8 for basic meals and $10 for fancy. Not bad at all. My suggestion: get the banana nut french toast with a side of real maple syrup . Then convince your friends to get the corn beef hash Benedict and help yourself to some of their food. The food: Very standard, no frills place. We ordered the eggs benedict which was simple, egg poached well. The hollandaise sauce was my least favorite and a very bright yellow with overpowering vinegar-like taste. The pancakes were standard, not too dry but not anything special. Basically this is a place for a quick breakfast when you're hungry. Standard things on the menu. Service is quick. One glaring awful thing is knocking a star off of this review: the home-fries. When I sat down I could see another patrons plate and I though she had ordered mashed potatoes. When I got my omelette I saw that it had the same wired pile of white stuff . They look like they have been seasoned, but there is absolutely no taste. No skins . No other veggies thrown in. No nothing. My date summed it up perfectly, "I think these are those flakes people use to make instant mashed potatoes". I actually asked the waitress if that was the case. My girlfriend and I happened upon this place waking down hope looking for places to eat before 10am. Small place with only a few tables. Nothing special on the decour, your standard hole in the wall breakfast place. Simple, which is nice. Server was very friendly and attentive. Food was decent to slightly above average. I will admit my homemade corn beef was better than most, which was delightful. Only thing that killed it was the lack of any flavor, spice and under cooked potatoes that went with it. Also, pretty small portion for nearly $10. My bacon wasn't as crispy as I like it, but I didn't ask for it that way so that's on me. If you want it crispy at this place, ask for it ahead of time. Emily's omlete was fair sized and pretty cheap, which is a huge plus if you just want a quick meal for less than $10 ($6.25 w/ HF & Toast). Toast was a little light for my liking, small portion of home fries I found underwhelming to look at. Would I come back? Yes. However, it would not be my first choice. My sister and I ordered from this restaurant through UberEats. We put in our order at around 10:30am and the order didn't get here until 11:45. We saw the driver was waiting at the restaurant for a while, not his fault. When the food finally arrived, we got the wrong order!! We both ordered omelettes, but what we got were a pancake, bacon, ham, sausage, eggs, and undercooked home fries. We will never be ordering from this restaurant again. read more

This is a three, but an extra star for being so close to my home. The spot on definition of quaint, 20 or so seats serving very fresh breakfast fare. The menu is nothing outrageous, creative or inspired. It is cheap eggs, pancakes, freedom toast and home fries. Not a greasy spoon, just a neighborhood diner in a blue colonial store front in Hope Village. I would steer clear of the egg sammiches if you are hungry. They are tasty, but really small and the toast gets really dry. The combination plates of eggs, pancakes, h-fries and bacon/ham/sausage are cheap and enormo, and quite tasty. Decent coffee. Service is traditionally pretty shitty; on my last two trips they have either erred or forgotten items, which is annoying. Whatever, the place is like 200 square feet so it is easy to flag down a server. The charm of this place is evidently quite appealing to East Side locals, as it is nuts on the weekends. I'm always in some state of internal conflict, I over analyze everything...I've actually had to stop myself from reading yelp reviews of places due to this. I had a chip on my shoulder from some past reviews over the quality of the potatoes. Homefries are a big factor in my breakfast/brunch enjoyment. Homefries, should deliver an array of potato textures: crunchy exteriors, tender interiors. In ideal situations they should bolster caramelized bits of onion and maybe even sautéed bell pepper. At the BC, I was served something akin to ill prepared scalloped potatoes from a box but lacking the cheese factor. Same texture and shape as the freeze dried offerings from Ms. Crocker. While good, my florentine benedict did not detract from or make up for the abomination that was calling itself potatoes on my plate. The spinach and tomato were perfectly sautéed, but the english muffin was a little underdone for my tastes. The poached egg was not unworldly perfect, but was well cooked and did its job. The hollandaise? Yeah, I think its from a packet that you add butter too and stir. My date loved, loved, LOVED his corned beef hash. Looking at it, they shred up their own corned beef and make a tasty looking hash. Maybe that's why the taters are so hasty/lackluster? Too much focus on the hash? Service was fine, no real complaints except getting water when our meals were delivered, not before. So disappointing! I've passed by this place a number of times, and have always been intrigued by their sandwich board advertising specials. I confess that I was taken in by the cute facade and name. We were hoping for a great breakfast before hitting the farmer's market, but we went away wishing we'd just stopped at Seven Stars for coffee and pastry. We all ordered some form of egg dish, and we all agreed that our meals were horrible. The eggs were overcooked and rubbery, My scrambled eggs were completely dried out. I ordered wheat toast and received pallid, barely heated white bread. I asked to substitute something else for the homefries, but they do not allow substitutions. My husband said the homefries were the worst he'd had since college. The coffee was typical Bunn-style, preground from a can. The only semi-good point: you can get real maple syrup for your pancakes or french toast, for $1.50 extra. I don't like that you have to pay for it, but at least it's available. Real maple syrup has become my measuring stick for a breakfast restaurant, so I thought I'd mention it. Really, don't be taken in by the cute factor. Eat somewhere else. read more

I've been wanting to try The Blue Cottage for a while because it boasts itself as serving a "Country Breakfast". As someone from the south I can tell you that I flipping LOVE "Country Breakfasts" and break hard when I see an advertisement for one. The breakfast at The Blue Cottage is unfortunately as un-country as every other advertised "Country Breakfast" above the Mason-Dixon line. Hint "Country Breakfast" means BISCUITS people! Preferably, those biscuits are served with jellies, honeys, butters or gravies. So, within seconds I discovered that I would not be getting the buttery biscuit I was craving, I settled for a waffle, fruit on the side, and a side of bacon. If I wasn't going to get my biscuits I would at least get my fat. The server was friendly and efficient and the food came out within minutes. The bacon was cooked to perfection, crispy, but not burnt. The waffle was a little on the dry side. It seemed like probably a dry waffle mix and a minute too long on the iron. The fruit wasn't quite ripe enough, but it was okay. I finished my entire meal and side of grapefruit juice. The bill came and I was kind of shocked when the total was almost $13. Seriously, the entire meal should have been $6.99. I probably won't be coming back just because I could spend that much and get better food somewhere else. If you happen to find yourself in a pinch and wanting a quick breakfast with quick service, then you should go here. I wouldn't discourage it. They do have some weekday specials that start at $4.95. Popped in for a late breakfast on a Saturday to try something different. Eh, it is what it is: don't expect much from this tiny greasy-spoon on Hope. The outside looks so cute; the inside barely resembles a dining room. Small, and awkwardly laid-out, it isn't horrible, but it isn't good either. The menu is very, very basic. Specials are only available Monday-Friday, so a third of the choices were gone from the get-go (it being a Saturday) when we sat down. My biggest complaint: I had to ask for coffee three times. Three. I do not function well without my morning caffeine. At all. We first ordered two cups with juice when we sat down and were brought our menus - easy to forget. Then asked again before we ordered our food. Me: "I'm sorry, could we get two cups of coffee when you have a minute? And a water too?" Her: "Of course!" Nothing. Eventually I asked the other waitress who walked by with the full carafe of coffee for her table if she wouldn't mind pouring us two cups - she apologized profusely for the wait, as did our waitress when she eventually returned with our food (which was pretty tasteless). The one person staff was friendly, greater me as I entered and offered several choices of seat. There are only 9 tables and 4 were taken. Not busy, but not bad for 10:30 on a Monday morning. I ordered traditional eggs benedict. There were several choices as additions at no cost. Tomatoes and spinach are farily common, but asparagus is an unusual addition. I did order the asparagus. The meal comes with fried potatoes. The meal was quite flavorful and generally well prepared. There was plenty of boiled asparagus and a generous serving of potatoes. The eggs were just slightly under cooked and the asparagus would have benefited being roasted or grilled for a few minutes to bring out the flavor. So 4 stars not 5. I am not really sure how this place manages. Unfortunately I really have to say it is not worth the effort with so many other great places nearby. Funny thing is that it almost seems more work to make this place 'poor' then it would be to just do it properly. So here is the skinny: Service was not really that good. We sat down, place our drink orders and started looking at the menu. About 5 minutes later, 3 glasses of water arrived and we were asked if we wanted to order. We asked for another couple of minutes. Then she returned. We started to place our orders and the light bibl went off that se forgot to bring over the coffee. Just an FYI, just because you get a cup of coffee does not mean it will be refilled with any regularity. Food was really subpar, especially for this being Hope Street with so many great places. Florentine omelet - eggs over cooked and dry; almost had a scorched flavor. The spinach was canned. The Feta cheese was rubbery, almost the texture of tofu. The potatoes were thinly sliced and grilled on a clean grill (meaning there was no flavor). It had some herbs, but not enough to make any dent. Eggs Benedict were there, but not impressive. All in all, I am not really sure I would trust this place to simply cook eggs. It is really sad because the price is fine IF you just delivered. 1) Go fresh (there is a farmers market twice a week a quarter mile down the road 2) Learn to cook an egg (seriously) 3) Coffee and any other drink can and should be refilled when the glass is empty 4) There is a bakery down the really (a really good one), go get your bread from there Kind of simple. As a believer in second chances, I went again a few weeks later.
