Flatbread
Jeff L.

My family came here yesterday for lunch. We were looking for a place to dine outside and the Bench hit the spot. The manager agreed to serve us outside even though it was January (but still 60F outside) and it was a good experience. We had the mushroom flatbread, the sweet potato salad, the crab soup and I had a Bloody Mary. Everything was enjoyable - I think my favorite was the soup which was more like a bisque than a typical tomato based Maryland crab soup. Overall I appreciated the good service and the nice patio overlooking the Rio lake and would recommend this as a lunch option for those wanting to dine outside while at Rio.

Some selections for their Breakfast Buffet

My review is for their Weekend Breakfast I stayed at the Gaithersburg Marriott hotel recently and decided to check out their breakfast. I knew The Bench was located in the hotel and it was great to know that their breakfast was available as early as 7am to as late as noon (this was on a weekend). You have two options to choose from - either do their buffet for $18.95 or order from their menu. I decided to check out their choices first and based on what I saw, I chose the buffet. One of the friendly servers showed me to my seat and asked if I wanted something to drink - I ordered orange juice not knowing if it was part of the buffet (I found out later that it was as I was not charged extra for it). From what I remember, the buffet choices included pancakes, eggs benedict, sausages, pastries, croissants, muffins, scrambled eggs, bigger sausages, bacon, potatoes (cut in quarters), french toast, waffles, cereal, yogurt, juice and fruit (melon, cantaloupe, strawberry, pineapple, banana, orange and apple). There was other stuff I am sure, but I am writing this from memory, plus I made 2.5 trips in selecting what I wanted. I liked that whenever I was finished with a plate (at my table), the staff did not pick up my plate unless I was there (I guess it was their way to make sure you were finished with your plate). I shall do the buffet again, but just eat more stuff - try to get my money's worth...at least. Plus, the staff was friendly and very helpful.

While staying at the Gaithersburg Marriott we stopped in to the bar, The Bench one day around early evening on a Saturday for a glass of wine before our event, which was at a nearby hotel. We were waited on rather quickly and the staff was friendly and smiled. They have a pretty nice selection of wines, especially for a hotel bar. We didn't eat on this visit, but the items on their menu looked decent. The next morning we did walk through the restaurant to go for a walk and noticed the placed was packed... the food smelled amazing and looked really good.

Food and drink - with bar and restaurant and lounge seating - with TVs and a lovely view of the lake. Good amount of food options for a hotel lounge / restaurant - and prices are comparable to other mid-scale hotels. But the food is just fair. The flatbread was really a thick bread, with some arugula and mushrooms in the center and bare around the edges - and rather greasy and salty. The crab and corn chowder was better - light and very spicy. But the service.... well, if you want stuff in less than an hour or two, head to the bar and order it yourself. They will then deliver it to your seating space in a timely manner. It's an okay place for folks staying in the hotel - clean and okay prices and options and lots of seating and nice views. But if not staying in the hotel, not someplace I would ever head to.

The view from the outdoor lounge. Perfect for a summer night.

We asked the host for an odd favor and not only did she honor it, but also followed up well after we were seated. Our server, Josh, was so knowledgeable on the menu items (both food and beverages) and gave the best recommendations. Our drinks were delicious and strong, and the food was reasonably priced and pretty tasty. We left stuffed and had to go boxes so you can say you get a bang for your buck. We did have an issue with one of our entrees, but it was quickly handled with care. All in all, zero complaints. Burtons is a solid choice for a casual restaurant.

I reached out and was speaking to the back end and was told that they were sorry for the quality and quantity of food and that they would mail me a gift card. I am attaching a photo of receipt of how much we ordered. We ordered a chocolate cake, the photo online showed a massive slice of cake, ours looked as if someone cut half of it off where the cake is supposed to be pointed. $12 for half a cake. My bfs meal was supposed to come with two sides. He ordered mashed potatoes and cole slaw. The mashed potatoes were in with the steak and it was a small portion that looked like a small ice cream scoop, ribeye ($49.00). We did not get the Cole slaw. We ordered a house side salad. It was literally a huge chunk of iceberg lettuce thrown in a bowl with some of the sides. ($14.00) I ordered the steak frites (34.00) the fries were fine, my steak had these weird pieces (see photo) inside, that were veins or ligaments but def not edible and very chewy and gross. I chewed a few pieces and kept having to over chew and then would spit out the pieces because it was rubbery, after the second piece I noticed the texture and then spit it out, then saw whatever it was that was causing the texture and issue. Seeing that immediately made me lose my appetite. So I was left hungry and turned off by my meal and filled up on calamari and fries. I have ordered this before and it usually comes with a nice amount of slices. Mine came with four pieces of sliced steak. We ordered the calamari and had no complaints. The back end comes to my house and drops off a GC of $25.00! Which to me is an insult. For that they can keep their cheap cop out. I will not be back. We spent $134.00 and tipped $19.00 for a take out order. And all they could give us back for a terrible experience and quality of food was $25.00?! Their salad alone was $14. The cake is $12. So basically come back spend more money and we will cover one simple thing but several of your items were sub par and or gross. I would not recommend. This restaurant took a lot of money and did the bare minimum to fix the issue and threw a minimum amount to appease the customer. But didn't mind taking my hard earned money, which I will now spend elsewhere. I also will be mailing back the card. Whoever came to my condo to drop off the gift card came at midnight. Which to me is weird and an odd time to come to someone's house. I have it on security video.

Although I had been to the Rio before, it had been quite some time, so finding the restaurant was a bit difficult, but we eventually made it. We arrived shortly after noon, and the restaurant was quiet, with only one other table occupied. The hostess greeted us, showed us to our table, and started us off with water. Shortly after, our server, Mary, came by to take our food and drink orders. Since it was our first visit, we asked for recommendations, and everything she suggested was excellent. My usual Appletini was good, although it tasted more like vodka than apple. The jumbo lump crab dip, while a bit small in portion, was absolutely delicious and packed with crab and perfectly paired with the sesame baguette. Mary also recommended the shrimp and chicken tenders basket, which was another great choice. My only critique would be to cut the chicken tenders into smaller, bite-sized pieces, as they were quite large and, combined with the crunchy batter, a bit difficult to eat. However, the flavor was spot on. The menu is extensive, including a wide variety of drinks and oysters from different regions. Although I spent more than expected, I would consider visiting again in the future.

Some of the servers are super great, and some are not so much. When a burger without certain ingredients was ordered, one waiter rudely said "then what do you want on the burger" however, the burger still had plenty of ingredients listed, that the person ordering didn't ask to be left off. It's difficult to order a plain burger with the only burger on the menu has bacon and cheese. The food is standard fare. Burgers, sandwiches, salads. The chef pays attention to allergens. I've tried the shrimp roll, the Caesar salad, and the turkey club. All of these can be made gluten free, although the menu doesn't denote it. Another in my party enjoyed the shrimp tacos and the burger. Being inside the Marriott, it is a little overpriced, but the food is good, just hit or miss with service. Great for a quick bite if you're staying in the Marriott.

Started with the Caesar salad appetizer and it was completely bland. No flavor at all. Then I had the French dip with the thin fries. I specifically asked for the meat to be well done and lean with no fat. The waitress said that wouldn't be a problem, but the sandwich came out not well done, fatty, and pretty tasteless. The horseradish sauce also had almost no flavor whatsoever. I don't even know why they call it horseradish honestly. The au jus seemed weak and watered down too, or maybe just old. Either way, it wasn't good. Overall the meal just felt really off compared to what this restaurant used to be. Maybe it was an off night, I don't know, but it definitely wasn't the experience I expected. Not sure if I'll go back again. Unfortunately in Montgomery County there really aren't that many great options left either.
