One word: Awful. This place was one of the WORST bars/restaurants I've visited in Seattle the past few years. The service was non-existent. We felt like we were a burden to the place when we walked in. The food was atrocious. In fact, it came out ice-cold. When we asked the waitress if they can heat up the food because it was cold, she just grabbed it and left. No "I'm sorry, let me get that fixed" or "my apologies, we'll make it right". She just huffed and grabbed the plate. 10 minutes later the plate came back, still cold and undercooked. Our group vowed never to return. You can find better food and service in a homeless encampment or the local soup kitchen. My first hint that this place was bad should have been the fact that it was Saturday night and the place was empty. I wouldn't be surprised if they shut down in the next few weeks or months. I'd really like to come back and try the food! Their happy hour wine by the glass was a decent cab that I wouldn't mind buying if it was full price! The spot is super-cozy and smells of delicious chai tea. I can't wait to come back and snuggle up with some friends over some tea (or wine, or chocolate), and good conversation! The only suggestion I would have is that they remove the menus that are leaning against the bar, they take up WAY too much space. Yesterday i had the pleasure of walking into this place after eyeing it for many weeks! OMG. it was amazing. First of all --- the service is warm, genuine and incredible. I love finding places in the city that feel unpretentious and welcoming. The server talked to the bartender about my drink preferences and picked something delicious out for me, while my friend had one of their most popular cocktails. She was warm, knowledgeable, cool and hilarious! We had just come from terrible service somewhere else so it was literally so awesome to have someone be so kind. The drinks are high quality, unique and delicious with a huge selection of whiskey and other spirits. The food is very often LOCAL!!! Not to mention incredibly fresh and very gluten free friendly (which is SO nice!!!!!!!) Loved the set up and energy of the place. It is sexy and warm but not over the top. This was a cozy bar that we popped into after dinner in the area. Dimly lit but an energetic vibe. Perfect for a date or night out with friends. Being seated at the bar and smelling the popcorn, we had to try the truffle oil popcorn. So addicting! I went with a whiskey fan who enjoyed two pours. A great selection for whiskey lovers! I had a cocktail called the Trampled Underfoot, which was strong and slightly sweet. They have an original drink menu along with small plates to share. One of my favorite spots in Fremont! I love the fun/romantic ambiance of the whole place, and the service is really great. I came here with a few friends for Election Night, and was surprised at how understaffed they were for the night, but still remained attentive and keeping their cool the whole night. They had a number of Election Night specials, but I stuck to beer the whole night (not a whiskey girl at all). Their beer selection wasn't great or vast by any means, but they had a good range of options (about 8-ish beers on tap). My friend and I split a charcuterie board, and got Truffle popcorn. That popcorn was like crack - we ended up order 3 orders of it since more friends decided to join us later. The charcuterie board came with: 2 cheeses, 2 meats, some crackers, and pickles. Overall, really enjoyed this place and really would like to commend the staff that were working that night! We were all under immense pressure that night, and the fact that the servers kept the good drinks and food coming made it a tad more bearable. read more

Absolutely love this place! It has something for everyone, really great cocktails, small plates pairings and an excellent selection of wine. We hosted a party for 30 people there and were able to book out a separate area with an assigned server. Friday around 8pm, sat at the bar alone before a show at High Dive. The hipster with curly hair and glasses took my drink order, a glass of wine. He then proceeded to mix various cocktails in front of me while I sat at the bar watching. Ten minutes later I get my glass of wine. Various people scurry between the floor and behind the bar and not one of them ever looks up at me and smiles, says hello, nothing. I get that you're busy but acknowledge my existence at least? I'm not a bad looking woman, this isn't usually a problem for me. I have to flag this guy down (even though he is working directly in front of me) to get a glass of water and to finally put in my food order, cauliflower. I watched the older hipster gentleman with tattoos prepare my food behind the bar, which I liked. Also, he was cute. Of anyone I interacted with he was the most attentive and at least offered something akin to a smile, but I think he is the owner. The roasted cauliflower was Ok, not great. It was seasoned very unevenly. Some bites I got a lot of sea salt, others a pepper bomb. The dish shows some promise, but needs work. I did not finish my wine or food. There were no other patrons at the bar at one point, and still not one person bothered to ask how I was doing. I was so ignored in fact, that I got up and left without paying the check. I stopped in to this lovely spot and found that the decor was very tasteful and charming. I sat along one section of the bar and got the wine taster flight for $18 for 3 half glasses. The Cedergreen Cellars 2009 Cab Sauv was really nice and medium-full bodied which I really enjoyed with a few slices of their warmed bread and oil. The balsamic vinegar in the oil was pretty mediocre, but that is the worst I can say about this place. This place is great! I came here after work with some coworkers before dinner. There was a group of four of us and we each got a flight of scotch. I got the four region flight since I've always wanted to compare the different regions without having to buy a bottle from each. The glasses came out with about 1/2-2/3 of a shot on a cool plank. They also provided a glass of ice cubes and water with a dropper. I usually have it neat, but my coworker recommending dropping a few drops of water into the scotch. This completely changed the flavor! It released so much more flavor/smell and altered the taste. Overall, the place was hip, dimly lit and the server was friendly. I have been looking for the perfect place to come and do work for a while and most every place has been missing an element or two...until now. Big tables? Check. Wifi? Check. Coffee? Check. A nice selection of snacks/sandwiches? Check. Sweet and savory? Check. Booze available? Check. Friendly staff? Check. Affordable? Check. Open long hours? Check. They've got it all! (Though a few more power outlets wouldn't hurt. I know, I know, I ask for too much.) I love that I can work here in the morning and drink coffee and eat eggs or work here in the afternoon or evening and eat olives and cheese and drink wine. They have a nice selection of vegan and gluten free products for those with dietary restrictions, which is a bonus for many of my friends. The space is huge, the staff is great, and the atmosphere never gets too out of control to concentrate on what you're doing, even when they're doing something like setting up for some sort of jewelry sale, as they were when I was here recently. There's nowhere else in the neighborhood quite like this and I hope they stay around for a long time! read more

Wow. What a horrible place to try to have fun. We walked in with a party of 9 people. There were 3 open tables by the windows but we were told we'd have to take tables outside. It was around 40 degrees Fahrenheit Then, randomly, we were told the waitress didn't feel comfortable waiting on us. Nobody had said anything inappropriate to any member of the staff. We are respectful people who tip well But nonetheless, treated like criminals in this place that was neither interesting nor fun anyway. But apparently according the people there we were violating some random fire code. Shall not return. Maybe by seattle service expectations this level of service is ok. But people who have been to other cities would not put up with this horrendous treatment. read more

Back tonight, for an unexpected free wine tasting (Piedmont varietals) and a nice bit of an evening sitting at the bar with a cheese plate and glass of red wine, plus excellent friendly conversation with the talented women working there! I wish there was a spot like this in Capitol Hill, where I could sit (quietly) some evening and do work with a glass of wine and a little food. If you're near Fremont and seeking that scene, WTC is your spot. The owner is very friendly (invited me over to the wine tasting as soon as I walked in the door), everyone's welcoming, and there are plenty of tasty things to eat, drink, or look at on the display shelves. My laptop and wine-loving self will probably be back whenever possible; I saw a few solo drinkers filtering in for the same purpose, as well as some couples and groups in for a drink or two. This Fremont Bar is beyond well-stocked for any lover of whisky or scotch. I popped in twice during my week in Fremont - once for a late night nightcap with my bestie (OMFG - GET THE CHOCOLATE PORT) and then had the room reserved for a larger get-together on a Saturday afternoon. The Barrel Thief was a gracious and friendly host to our rowdy crowd of 15+/- half a dozen kids of various ages. I wouldn't necessarily recommend the establishment as a kid-friendly hang-out spot, but they welcomed us with open arms on an otherwise quiet Saturday afternoon without complaint, and for this I will love them forever. All food served is tapas style - we relished the dolmas, marcona nuts, truffles, olives (some of the best I've ever had) more chocolate port, and the notorious abundant plate of truffled popcorn. The flatbreads look delicious and were snarfed down by some of my gluten-loving friends. Whether hard spirits or wine is your jam, the Barrel Thief has enough varietals to keep you coming back for more. Don't come expecting to get fed dinner, but do come for a tasty adult beverage over good conversation and maybe a bowl of popcorn to soak up your second (or third) drink. And try the chocolate port. Seriously. As a final note - if you do bring in a bunch of kids, even if it is a quiet afternoon, tip generously. It's hard enough to integrate kids into U.S. American society without giving businesses a reason to turn away families. read more

My fiance and I were visiting Seattle and randomly found this place on Groupon. Let me tell you-we were extremely pleased with the experience...really fantastic service. The poor bartenders both make drinks and prepare the food but they did it professionally and with grace! We greatly enjoyed the empanadas, charcuterie and cheese plates and the pear pie for dessert. The ambiance of the place is very nice too, the selection of wines and beer, and food items was perfect. We wanted to try everything on the menu! We'd definitely come back next time we're in Seattle. I just wrote a huge review and Yelp accidentally deleted it, so that's cool. Short version: this place has a fun atmosphere but tends to be really busy (at least whenever I've been here). I had wine, but my friends with cocktails said they seemed a little small for the price. I ate the So Cheesy pizza and it was DELICIOUS save for the giant chunks of garlic on top (I love the flavor of garlic, but don't need to eat massive pieces of it - but your mileage may vary). Service was sort of slow, but otherwise, it's a neat little place and the pizza was delicious. read more

I've been here several times and had consistently good experiences. The atmosphere is maintained well, from everything to the lighting, decorations, volume, etc. All the food I've tried has been great, but one of the best things about The Barrel Thief is their events schedule. They do tastings and classes pretty frequently, which in my experience offer a good mix of entertainment and education. The last one I went to was for Hudson whiskey a couple of weeks ago. Good time, good appetizers, and good whiskey! The guy hosting the tasting was friendly, provided a lot of information about both Hudson and whiskey in general, and was able to answer pretty much every question asked. All in all, a great place to go for food, drink, and a chill environment, and definitely ask about their special events schedule when you're there. read more

Hmmmmmmmmmm Have to just say that I am dissapointed. Heard good things and wanted to check it out. Called to make a reservation and was told it was self seating and we didn't need one. We walked in to a wonderful smell we were excited to get in our mouths, say the seat your self sign, avoided the "reserved" area, and patiently waited for a gentleman to finish. He was great and we bantered with him and bit, and while he comically offered to sell us his seat, he "gave" it to us when he wanted to leave. Or so we thought, after waiting, following the instructions and sign that said seat ourselves, and letting other seats pass to get these, we were told when sitting down, that this table was now "resevered". Hmmmmmmm, I am now frustrated, annoyed and was told something that could not happen for me was now preventing me from sitting, paying you money and experiencing your restaraunt that we waited for. I came here with some girlfriends and we each loved the place. Their model is simple: they sell wine, tea, and chocolate. What's not to love? Among us, we ordered the sipping chocolate, hot chocolate, Chai tea, and espresso. We also shared a slice of the squash cake/bread, a carrot cake muffin, and the salted nuts (almonds/hazelnuts). 1. Stopped by here with a friend the other night for a Tango night, which they apparently host occasionally. This is a small space but it's really adorable; it's a dark burgundy color with hanging plants and string lights from the ceilings, a medley of 2-4 toppers... cozy, kind of romantic. I did not try the food here, but they do have an extensive whiskey and wine list - which I did put to the test and was not disappointed. The grilled cheese is amazing. It's made with some sort of wheat bread.. american cheese (I think), with some spinach. Cooked perfectly.. nice crunch and melted cheese, but not too greasy. Easily one of the best grilled cheeses I've ever had (and good value, too). The coffee (medium roast) matches the grilled cheese pretty well. The restaurant itself has a very cute atmosphere, though it feels almost "too" open. Denser seating would make the place look a little nicer. I took my husband to The Barrel Thief for an early birthday surprise tasting. We had an amazing experience thanks to Christopher & The Barrel Thief!!! The location is great (if you're driving, parking is pretty decent for Fremont) and it has a lovely outdoor patio area. The interior is comfortable and classy. Christopher Gronbek, the owner and general manager, really knows his stuff. He took his time to explain different bourbons and was extremely patient and helpful with all of our questions, recommending some amazing bourbons (I know next to nothing about whiskey/bourbon/rye/etc.) and went above and beyond to make sure we had the best night as this was my husbands birthday treat. Great place to check out - especially if you fancy whiskey & bourbon or even wine as they have great lists featuring both. I enjoyed an Irish Coffee which hit the spot on a rainy day. I like that there are lots of different seating arrangements to choose from: small table, booth, stool facing a window onto the street, etc. I had tea with a friend on a Tuesday early afternoon and there was plenty of seating to choose from. My Meetup group held a book swap in the Velvet Room at The Barrel Thief, and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience - the atmosphere is very social with lots of people eating, drinking, and being merry. I didn't plan on eating, but after seeing/smelling everyone's flatbread pizza, I caved it and bought the Tasty Pizza which was a nice cheesy delight. The service was good considering we had 20 people in our party. Someone in our group mentioned that their Sunday brunch was pretty good, so I intend to check that out in the very near future. This bar is a great spot in Fremont to grab some friends, sit in a booth, and enjoy a wide variety of wine or whiskeys. 175 wines and 30 whiskeys to be exact (!). With this wide variety available you'll definitely find something you like. For me, I was pleased to see Yamazaki 12yr and 18yr on the menu. I was there after work during happy hour menu and we indulged in way too many orders of truffle popcorn. It came in a heaping bowl for $3 and we just kept ordering bowl after bowl. Nom.
