On our way to another event up the block, we stopped in at the Barrel Thief to have a little bite to eat and a cocktail. It was early afternoon and there were only two other people... hmmmm, we wondered why but sat down anyway! We sat next to the bar and were greeted right away and given menu's. Sounds promising right?! We thought so too! We scanned the drink menu quickly and decided to sample a couple of the unique cocktails. We then waited awhile and decided we should scan the food options as well so we could order both at the same time. We decided on the combo charcuterie and cheese platter. We then waited some more, chatted a bit, admired the decor and wondered where the nice gal went that seated us! She finally appeared and we gave our order of two drinks and the platter. The bartender brought our drinks over quickly and they were tasty, just a bit on the small side for the price. We waited another 20 minutes or so for the platter. Since we got the combo, we were really expecting a nice platter. What we got was extremely disappointing, I mean extremely disappointing. There was one small wedge of cheese (two bites to be exact) and maybe four bites total of meat (that's only two bites per person to be exact)! The nuts were ice cold, pickled peppers ice cold and about a quarter sized little taste of mustard. All this wonderfulness for a whopping $24.00! YIKES!! We never saw that nice gal again and had to corner the new gal to get our tab so we could get to our event on time. The tab was $75.00 for about five bites of food and two small drinks. I was really attracted by the intimacy of this restaurant. And the fact that they have spectacular selection and boast great decor all sounded great. The actual experience was a bit less impactful. When you reserve here, they make a huge deal of cancelling if you can't make it, rescheduling, etc. I get it, the venue is small, and seating is at a premium. But when we arrived, they just asked if we had reservations, didn't check a name, and waved about in the "sit here or there" kind of way. The whiskey selection was excellent. The food was hit/miss. The pork chop was about 7/10. The burger and the fries are actually really good. Would recommend the fries, any time. The service was actually pretty bad, even by pandemic standards. We felt pretty well forgotten, based on where we decided to sit. Could be that we chose the last seating of the evening (8P), but we weren't really looked after in any traditional sense. Was difficult to get our server back to place additional orders, get the check, etc. Might try once more on a return trip, but it certainly did t impress as much as the website. read more

Beware the "service charge" My steak salad and Wheelie Pop beer were good but a little pricy, though to be honest on their own would get a four star rating from me. The deal breaker for me was the 20% service charge which was hard to notice on the bill in the dark setting of the restaurant. Due to my low vision I didn't see this until I got home in looked at the receipt in brighter light. I tipped 20% which I thought was fair though had I noticed the service charge I would not have tipped at all. As it stands the staff received a $14 tip for a $30 bill. This is a really bad practice and I think the management should make a better effort to make the service charge apparent or get rid of it and let patrons tip as they see fit. I won't be going back, and I caution other patrons to check their receipts before they tip. read more

But an undisclosed $48 auto-gratuity to bring out four 2oz pours in under an hour is insane. Was empty at 6pm and the bar staff were just staring at us. Go to Ballard Cut instead. Much more knowledgeable and friendly staff, better whisky selection and pricing and no hidden auto-gratuity for simple whisky pours. read more

We also had the truffle popcorn which was nifty but quite imbalanced as far as the oil and seasoning went on it. Some would have a little, some would have too much. The service was friendly, came by here and there. Definitely helpful although with the amount of people we didn't see him optimally for getting orders in. Maybe I just drink too quickly or I just absorb water too quick but we had to wait here and there which detracted a bit from the experience. Overall though, I like the setup of the place. Each of the seating areas looked like their own eclectic little areas for different size groups so you could feel like you're taking part in an establishment or have your own little island to drink among your compatriots. If I was on a mission though or drinking as quick the next time the bar would probably be preferable to alleviate my own personal gripes. read more

Our group of four went here for Barrel Thief's fairly regular Wednesday Wine Tasting event featuring a Washington wine maker. Barrel Thief is in Fremont, so parking can be difficult so you might want to drive around for a bit. The venue is gorgeous and for a Wednesday night, this place was fairly full. it is located right next to the Fremont Rocket Ship.They have many different whiskies and a very in depth wine list available by glass or bottle as well. They also have a list for small bites as well. This a great place to enjoy a glass of wine and just unwind. Let's start with why we went here, the wine tasting, for $10, you get 8 samples of wine and you also get to meet the wine makers, which was pretty cool. The wines were from Array Cellars and Brian Carter. A picture of the tasting list is attached with this review. It contained 3 white wines and 5 red wines. I am not the biggest fan of white wines and much prefer red wines. It was fun to mingle with everyone there sampling the wines. If you were interested in buying a bottle, prices are next to what you are drinking. You get a tasting refund if you buy a certain number of bottles and then get a discount if you also buy a certain number of bottles. This evening, three bottles waves the tasting fee and six gets you 10% off. Prices for Washington wine seem pretty expensive but it seems to be the norm. Overall, I really like tasting events as it provides samples to hone in on what you like and what you don't like. It was awesome meeting the wine makers and for Barrel Thief hosting events like this. read more

Horrible wine evn service. I tried a wine flight and it was obvious that the wine was very stale from how bitter and sour they all were. After a small taste of all 3 I asked for my check. While waiting for our Theo Chocolate tour to start, we decided to walk to move our car. On the way, we got distracted by Wine Tea Chocolate and my friend ended up having to run to move her car with 15 minutes to spare. I WISH I lived near this place - or that this place would open a location in Boston. And I don't even drink coffee. Yes - that's the only odd thing. They seem to be mainly a coffee bar, but coffee is no where in the name. Anyway. The server who helped us was so - yes, helpful. Three people (myself included) asked him if he was the owner, but he was "just a waiter who loves [his] job." And he's good at it. He was helping another family and us at the same time, then a bunch of people came in. He was zooming around, giving everyone personal attention and trying to help them figure out what flavor/type of drink and snack worked best for their palate/mood. He even gave us a free sample of their "sipping chocolate." When the manager came out to help, she was super nice & accommodating too. I asked if they sold tea bags (for my flight that evening) and she said not really, but that she could probably make one for me. (I didn't take her up on the offer, but it was nice!) My husband & I split a pot of the black tea with ginger & peach, which smelled fantastic. The taste didn't quite live up to the aroma, but it was smooth and not overly sweet. I really enjoyed it and I am not a huge tea drinker. This place is so charming and welcoming. I would come here all the time if I lived here! Especially for some wine in the evening... I ordered the Belgian waffles "the works", which had the arugula, sausage, and an overeasy egg on top. Husband ordered a baked egg with chorizo, which had hearty amounts of meat and potatoes. And a Bloody Mary. The Bloody Mary was $8 and the dishes were each $10. Good price for the quality of food that they use. It was enough to be full, but wish the drink was taller and used less ice. The restaurant doesn't have a tv, but a projector. So there isn't a bad seat in the house. The setup of seating is pretty cool, when we came for brunch there was only one other couple. It may be safe to say that brunch is a new service here, but it was nice to try it out. read more

my first visit back to the place that used to be Wine Tea Chocolate from years ago! The Barrel Thief loses most of the tea and all of the chocolate but with a much expanded wine, beer, cider, mead and spirits menu. there is some teas here but not many. I really like the relaxed vibe of the place. lots of different kinds of seating from big booths, to tables to bar seating. The truffle popcorn was okay but wanted to try it since it was featured in so many of pics. Barrel thief is one of my most favorite bars in Seattle. Amazing selection of drinks, good food, service and cozy seating! They have a huge selection of wines and whiskey BY THE GLASS! Drinks- The first time me and husband came here was in search of a wine that we had loved in our trip to italy, and this was one of the few places in Seattle with a great wine list. My friend and I went in for some HH after an afternoon around Fremont. What a cute place! I loved the lighting and the decor and I really enjoyed just looking around the place. We grabbed a cozy booth and ordered some wine, stuffed grape leaves, and (huge) bowl of truffle popcorn. You have no idea (...or maybe you DOOOO?) what a difference it makes to me as a sad sack with Celiac disease that 1) the GF bread is GOOD and 2) it's straight up marked as an option on every applicable dish on the menu (WITHOUT me needing to waste time and ask if it's okay!). I admit that I've stopped in a couple of times and both times, I have been impressed. I'm glad they changed their name from Wine Tea Chocolate to something a little less clunky. You might miss them but they are located across from the Fremont Rocket and PCC. They offer an all ages dining area and they also take reservations for meetings and parties. Their menu is vegan and gluten-free friendly, with items clearly marked for folks to understand. HH happens from 4 to 6PM and all day on Tuesdays! If brunch is more your style, they have a weekend waffle brunch too from 10AM to 2PM. A note on brunch, they make sweet and savoury Belgian Waffles. The savoury variety come either with chèvre, walla walla onions and tomato jam, or one with onions, Tasso ham, arugula, and a poached egg. Sweet waffles come several ways: - plain with sweet butter and pure maple syrup - granola and bourbon maple syrup - blueberries, whipped cream, and maple syrup If waffles don't excite you, they have poached eggs, a pizzetta, and a protein plate with tofu, cannellini beans and kale! I love coming to Wine Tea Chocolate on Saturday mornings, when they've first opened around 9am and it's still quiet in Fremont. They have counter service (not table service) in the mornings, so I'll go up to the counter and order choose one of their delicious teas and something to nibble on, and then go sit at their window seats to read the newspaper in the sunny space and start my day with some leisurely indulgence. They have over 100 teas to choose from. My favorites are the Chinese Bai Hao Silver Needle, a delicious delicate white tea with hints of stone fruit, and the Taiwanese Li Shan, an oolong with sweet green notes. They serve the teas in drip-down pots, which prevent over-steeping through the genius mechanism of having the water slowly drip out of the brewing chamber where the tea is, and into the lower chamber where it sits ready to pout into your cup. These pots are quite small, but the staff at Wine Tea Chocolate will happily refill your pot with hot water as many times as requested (and as many times as your tea leaves can handle). Most of their teas are $4 per pot, although particularly rare ones are $5-6. Wine Tea Chocolate also offers a myriad of other beverage options from steamed espresso drinks and hot chocolate to beers, wines and ciders, but I've never strayed beyond the teas. Their food selection favors nibbles and sharable items over big meals. My go-to choice for my morning teas is their cacao nib and hazelnut granola with greek yogurt, for $7. THIS GRANOLA IS FANTASTIC. I would seriously buy it by the bag-full if that was an option. It's sweet and decadent, and filled with lovely roasted hazelnuts, chocolate nibs, coconut, rolled oats, and just a sprinkle of sea salt. Absolutely perfect. I'm taking one star off and giving the 4 instead of the full 5 stars because sometimes the prices are a little ridiculous. For example, $4 for a single slice of Macrina Bakery squash harvest loaf? $7 for two thin slices of haloumi cheese on a plate?! Really? Wine Tea Chocolate offers happy hour all-day on Mondays, and also hosts classes a few times a month, as well as wine tastings and chocolate samplings. Yum! read more

Near Fremont's famous rocket ship, WTC is in a great, central location. Parking was easy on a Wednesday evening and free after 6! Woohoo! My first impression was that it felt a little pretentious, but then again, I am the type of girl who despises flying economy class. So whateves. There was a sign that said "Table Service" so we sat down and menus were brought to us. I immediately loved the selection of teas from around the world as well as the variety of sweet and savory goodies at this little spot. And how awesome is it that they have gluten free options?! Being that I had just woken up 90 minutes prior and the sun was setting (yup, I am a zombie night shift worker), I figured it would be appropriate to order a breakfast of tea, olives, and truffle popcorn to share with my gal pal, M. We ordered the Japanese Gyokuro Kin green tea, which was served in an adorable tea pot that made me want to get all klepto. The downside to the tea pot was that it was so small. 12 fluid ounces later, we were feening for a hot water refill. Unfortunately, the servers were not very attentive and didn't once check on us. M went to the counter several times to get our pot refilled. Is this considered table service, as the sign indicated? However, the sign of lies did not stop me from enjoying our delicious tea, which was robust and satisfying. As M and I mused, it could be its own meal. (But I'm a hippo, so....) The vibrantly green olives were smooth, without the usual in-yo-face flavor that you expect from most olives. They were easy on the palate and didn't overpower the flavor of the tea or popcorn. Not to mention that this little bowl of goodness is just $4 on their happy hour menu. Bonus! The truffle popcorn was the clear star in my breakfast of champions. There is just something about eating truffled ANYTHING that makes a regular food taste divine and luxurious. The popcorn was freshly popped and served in an overflowing bowl, the remaining yummy clusters cradled by the plate underneath. If this is heaven, then kill me now. Each bite was truffley, salty, and slightly peppery. I basically hogged the entire plate and let M have her olives. I know that I will be craving this popcorn over and over again. Oh, I already am! Overall, the lack of "table service" actually does not deter me from returning, and I am clearly looking forward to more truffle popcorn as well as trying their gluten free fig and grilled cheese sandwich (it makes me so excited to wonder about what type of GF bread they will serve it on...Udi's? Manini's? Ahhh!) From reading other Yelp reviews, it seems that the service is inconsistent, but hopefully they will retrain and improve as their business grows. I am on your side, WTC. read more

I've walked by the Barrel Thief several times on my way to and from the Sunday market, and have always wanted to stop in. My drinking buddy and I finally visited this week and were really impressed! They have the perfect balance of running a nice establishment while also offering unpretentious food and friendly service. We went for a few rounds of beer and wine, all of which was tasty and had us buzzing nicely before long, and the maple bacon tartine, which was so simple but so delicious! I really have to make a note about the service here--they're nice, quick, and wholly unpretentious, which was a pleasant surprise for a fancier place. We will definitely be back for more--The Barrel Thief is a great place for an intimate drink with a date or a casual round with friends. read more

Lots of great selections and yummy food items! My wife and I met a friend here for brunch and did some day drinking. The place was slow so we got lots of attention and plenty of time to enjoy our drinks and each other's company. The food was inventive and delicious! I got a spicy cheesy egg bake, a protein plate with tons of healthy goodness like arugula and tofu, and some darn tasty dirty martinis. The girls got waffle sandwiches which they raved about. The popcorn was great, it had just the right amount of truffle taste and was the perfect portion for two people. We also highly enjoyed the tea, and our waitress was nice and kept refilling the pot with hot water. We refilled the tea 5 times and it was still strong by the end. I really liked the vibe of the place, we came at an odd time so it was totally empty and we were able to get a big booth in the back and just relax for a while. I have been a fan for years. So happy to know they are back after the peak of the pandemic. Service has been great, very friendly staff, quick serving and no delays for the paying check. The rum menu is the best in the Seattle area after Rumba, very impressive for a bar that is more specific to wine and whiskey. They currently have at least six great Foursquare rums and about the same amount of very good sipping Plantation rums! Recently had the fries and they are SO GOOD!!
