This is the one and only place to get real Jonny Cakes, which are NOT supposed to be light and fluffy like pale cornmeal pancakes, but thin and brown and crispy and crunchy with lacy edges, ready to be submerged in butter and maple syrup. Luckily, the Barn is located just over the Rhode Island side of the state line, where the correct version of this delicacy is served. On the border stands the historic grist mill where the white flint corn meal, a Jonny Cake necessity, is produced. The Barn Restaurant, nestled in the superior seclusion of Adamsville, RI, is a glorious breakfast joint that is really in a building that was once an old barn. Someone decided to refurbish it, jazz it up just a smidge, and make it into a breakfast cafe. I'm sold right there. The Barn offers a great atmosphere, I really love that is, in fact, in an old barn. The interior is a all beautifully stained wood (duh, it's a barn) and the area is very pretty and quaint. They even have paintings hanging up by local artists of landscape watercolors and oils of the area. And although the scenic little lot it's nestled on and the mini art gallery it has inside does not have anything to do with the quality of their food, I just figured I would mention that for anyone that is interested. Now on to the quality of the food: I personally think the food is above average, as is the menu. They have different specials on their chalkboard when you first walk in and if there is a bit of a wait to be seated (it DOES get packed on the weekends) they at least have a few specials for you to look at and mull over. And their specials are very tasty and creative. When I went a couple of weeks ago, it was a Belgian Waffle with a spiced pear compote and caramel sauce. Also, there was a stuffed french toast special as well. I am sure these were both out of this world, but alas, I was in the mood for something savory the day I went. The menu has a pretty extensive omelet choice, some different eggs benedict dishes, pancake/waffle/french toast combo plates, and of course the usual breakfast a la carte fare. I decided to go with the "Eggs on the Bayou" dish which was. Oh my word. Oh my flippin' word. Awesome is a word that does not measure up. I have been here before a few times a few years back when I had a bigger sweet tooth and always got waffles and/or french toast dishes and they were rockin' as well, but I doubt I will get a different meal any time I go back. The Eggs on the Bayou meal is basically a cajun version of the traditional eggs benedict. You have your english muffins and poached eggs like a normal eggs benedict, but crab cakes and "creole hollandaise" sauce are added. I am not a fan of spicy food, but I do like food with some bite to it, and this has just the perfect amount of bite. The service was fantastic. The waitress was attentive and very accomodating to my needs. I am pregnant, so I have to have eggs cooked all the way through for the moment. I explained this to her when I ordered the dish, and when the food was ready she stood by me and said "just cut it and half to make sure it's cooked all the way through and if not I will have them poach a couple more eggs for you the way you like." Sure enough, they were runny on the inside. Normally I could care less, but being pregnant I was advised in the beginning (with the long novel of other things I can't eat) not to have runny eggs. So she sent them back and a few minutes later returned with beautifully cooked eggs :). I gobbled that thing up like a vacuum. The prices here a bit higher than some other places I have had breakfast at in the area, but they are not outrageous and you get what you pay for in this place. The dish I had was one of the pricier ones ($11.95 I believe), presumably because it contained shellfish. But again, the quality of the food is amazing in my opinion. I highly recommend The Barn. Took a weekend Girls Trip to RI and came here for breakfast. So delicious! They ran out of the special I wanted but came back and recommended some dishes. Ended up with the banana pancakes so goooood. My friends mom who lives 10m away said they used to mill their own flour across the road until the building caught on fire. I will definitely be back! Went to the barn on a Friday morning. Very busy. Waited very very very long to be seated. Wasn't crazy about the food or service. I know the server was trying because it was busy but I wasn't impressed. I didn't even get coffee til 15 minutes after finally being sat, and seating was long based on one server being on.. I have had eggs benedict at a location that was rated by numerous food critics as the best around....The Barn's Portuguese Benedict, in my book rates right up there with the best. The Barn has spoiled me, it's hard to like breakfast anywhere else. This is not your typical greasy spoon; the food is fresh, local, and creative. They always have great daily specials, and plenty of healthy options too. The staff are friendly and attentive, bringing around coffee and chatting with customers, service can sometimes be a bit slow, especially on the weekends when there's a crowd (be prepared to wait up to 20 minutes to be seated), but I go to relax so it typically doesn't bother me. The decor inside is great too - huge floor to ceiling windows for barn doors, rustic/wood beam decor, and lots of local artist's prints for sale on the walls. I visit a town near Adamsville every year during the summer and going to this restaurant for breakfast is one of my traditions. They have outdoor seating behind the barn(the restaurant is in an actual barn), and it is really nice to sit out there and enjoy a coffee. The service is great, and the menu has many options to ensure a delicious meal for everyone who sets foot there. The food is some of the most delicious breakfast I have ever had. This was my first visit to The Barn and although there were items that looked like a good bet to order, I had a hankering for a basic breakfast. I ordered the biscuits and sausage gravy (comes with fried potato), side of hash,mimosa and 3 soft poached eggs. One can't always expect perfect but this was pretty close. The teenager serving coffee was neglecting to serve the cream with it so I just causally mentioned it to her that the table next to me with 6 people were waiting for it. So what, actually. She took care of it and it was the only thing I noticed needed attention. I drink my coffee black so it didn't really matter to me. Shortly after, Katie, my waitress took my order. I was struck by her upbeat demeanor and how friendly she was. It was a Sunday morning and there was a wait to get in and the waitresses were working their tails off. Katie maintained her friendly demeanor and smile with each customer she dealt with. She was a stellar credit to this business. My breakfast was the best of its type I have had in any restaurant. The hash is wonderful, the fried potatoes, although not crispy, were wonderfully flavored and delicious, my eggs were perfect and I laid them atop the side of hash. The biscuits and gravy were as good as it gets in this part of the country. The mimosa was, well; a mimosa served in a small, plastic, party type champagne glass that looked like they wash and reuse them. I didn't like that so much but at least it wasn't the type of glass where the base can be pulled off! This was one of the best breakfasts I have had anywhere (of its type). Service was friendly with a delightful waitress. All this was $25.85. Yes it is on the high end for one person but for me, it was worth every penny. I intend to go back and try some of the other items. Based on some of the more negative reviews, maybe they aren't consistent. I shall see.... In the meantime, a tip of the had to the business and its staff for making my Sunday meander in the country a pleasant one. read more

Well, you can't eat the food or give any stars they don't let you sit down to eat. Sorry I just have a problem with the place that you walk into on a Monday morning at 12:05 with half the tables empty and the hostess says to you sorry we close at 12. It was sunny two people and we live in a small town but where I come from and what we consider professional and the way we like to retain customers is to welcome them in and serve them if were able and not one it's just five minutes after we supposed to be closed and we still have people in the restaurant . Decided to try this place to change things up based on the great reviews but did not have the experience others have reported. Service was fine but food was mediocre at best, and overpriced for the quality. There was a decent amount of lobster in my omelet, but it was rubbery and overcooked. The side of bacon for $3.79 was 3 very thin strips laying in a pool of grease. My husband had the homemade hash and eggs. It is supposed to come with 2 eggs but looked like they only gave him 1 and the has was badly burned on the top and bottom so as to be mostly inedible. He said it was the worst breakfast he's ever had, but will never complain or send anything back, so we spent $40 on terrible food. We won't be back and will stick with Graziano's 501 in island park where the food and prices are far better. read more
