I went here for the first time on a Sunday afternoon with my husband. We've always passed it when we're driving through Steilacoom but had never really knew about it. We decided to give a try after checking out their menu on their website. It's conveniently located nearby our home and had a wonderful selection of breakfast, lunch, and even an old-fashioned soda fountain. When we walked in, we were immediately greeted by the staff. It's self-seating, so we were able to choose the view/area we wanted! Brenda was our waiter. She was very friendly and hard-working (she was working with so many tables/guests). Came here for breakfast on Sunday. We were seated right away but the food took over an hour to come out. The service itself wasn't any better. No one came over to us to apologize for the wait or check to see how we were doing, waters were empty and we didn't have silverware when our food came out. When the food did finally come out it was pretty bland. We had the salmon pancakes and the eggs florentine. The only reason I'm giving this place a 2 star is because the old school charm and decoration was a nice treat. read more

Horrible customer service. Seated myself. Had to go to counter to place my order after waiting a while. Then had to go back up to request a drink of water. I'm hoping food makes up for it but suspecting it won't. On the flip side, local historic ambience while waiting. Food was excellent. Almost worth the wait. This was always one of our most favorite places to go for brunch. I always knew it took a little more time than most places, but over the last year, the service has just gotten miserable. The waitress was nice enough, but extremely inefficient when it came to how she handled the few tables in the restaurant. There were three people dressed as the servers, but only one real person doing the serving. The other two were acting as "back-ups" I guess. And we had a horrible time going back and forth with the "chef" over a minor change that had been requested several times before, without any issues. It took an hour from the time we ordered to the time we got our food, not including the wait time to get drinks and order food. If they just had a couple more people to interact with the customers and someone to come in and teach them how to be more efficient in their service, this place would be so much better. The Bair Bistro was great on service- we arrived early and found a table, the service was fine to start, however as the hour went on, the we were ignored. Dirty plates in front of us should be the hint we're done eating. I felt the service was mismanaged, A strange woman sitting at the counter was talking to customers as if was an insider to the Bistro and was in some ways ordering the staff around, but if she worked at the place, she's a lazy person who allows others to do the hard work while she sits on her stool- it was odd to say the least. What a hidden little gem! Decided to visit here for a Friday brunch. It's located in a quaint little area that is close to the water. Going in you have lots of little trinkets that show off the restaurant's history. Customer service was good! Everyone was super helpful and laidback. My date ordered the clam chowder, I got the tomato soup and a grilled cheese to share. Both were on point! The clam chowder was a little thinner than my date was used to but still was great (it included bacon so obviously). Overall no complaints, we definitely will be going back. read more

I tried this place as soon as I drove into steilacoom because the locals say its where to go to find out the ends and outs of the people and events going on in this great little oasis as well as a great historical preservation of the old post office, hardware store, and pharmacy into a working restaurant. I headed in early in the afternoon and was greeted by roughly 5-7 different voices saying welcome and come on in. 30 minutes later I had met the owner (Sarah), her brother (Lucas) who is one of the great chefs in the kitchen and several Steilacoom locals looking to grab a quick bite before their daily activities. Bottom Line: my Cub Club was fresh, crisp, and flavorful, my server made sure I got in and got out in time for my appointment, and the atmosphere and extremely friendly locals had me laughing the whole time. They truly enjoy getting to know you if you're looking to chat or leave you be if you want a break from the world. They aim to please you and I had a blast - I can't wait to go back. New to the area, my family and I stumbled upon this place while exploring Steilacoom one Saturday morning. We went into grab a coffee but the wonderful aroma from the kitchen and the friendly staff beckoned us to stay for a late breakfast, and believe me we were not disappointed! The food was EXCELLENT- the pancakes are amazing and the Bair scramble is my favorite. The food was not just yummy, it was quality - like something grandma would make. The espresso was mediocre at best but drip coffee was actually quite good. The wait was less than Shari's (not like that says a lot) but well worth it in my opinion. When we got home and yelped this place, I was shocked to see the poor reviews; I figured our experience must have been a fluke, so we went back last week. We used to love this place, great atmosphere, location and food. I don't know what's happened in the past few months but the service for breakfast has taken over an hour in our last three visits. The last time we tried we were sat at a table and in a half an hour never received menus, water or had our order taken. I think 30 mins is pretty patient, especially for a couple with a toddler. Hopefully they'll figure this out, but until then....don't go for breakfast unless you can wait until lunch for it. read more

It is my sisters 25th birthday and she made a reservation. We arrived at 10:45ish for the 11:00 reservation. It is currently 12:53 and we do not have our food. They didn't give us water or cutlery until we had been sitting for quite a while. We ordered drinks, and we had to ask once or twice for them (they forgot). This place is adorable. We thought it was a drug store and were surprised and delighted to find it is a restaurant filled with history. We enjoyed an old fashioned soda from the original sofa fountain while we read the history. My son was thrilled to touch a safe that real robbers blew into with gun powder. A great little spot! Love the decor! It's in an old pharmacy and they have lovely vintage items everywhere. I had the 2 egg breakfast, it came with eggs, choice of meat (I got bacon, yum!) choice of bread (white toast) and potatoes. Everything was great, including the macchiato with vanilla syrup that I ordered. They brought out what I assume was homemade strawberry jam with the toast and I loved the thick cut bacon they served. My husband ordered the same items but added on sausage and pancakes. He loved the food too. Don't forget to get the 12% discount if you're military! Now for the bad, they are understaffed and the staff they have are SLOW. Once they finally took our order, the food came out pretty timely though. We had lunch today at the Bair Bistro, after driving by it for a long time since the re-open but have never stopped in until today. Unfortunately, it was just so-so in both food and service. I had the Cub's Club and Anne had the Hemmingway Benedict. Hers was pretty tasty - not great - something a little odd in the flavor that I couldn't put my finger on but overall quite tasty. My club sandwich though was not very good. HEAVY on the ham and turkey (as in just too darn much!), the bacon was limp, the lettuce was limp, the tomato was limp, and the bread was too thin and just fell apart. And the fries it came with were just plain nasty. No other word - even the smell of them was not good. Not sure why - pretty hard to goof up on fries. But I'd certainly never order them again here. Service, as others have said, was slow and sporadic, despite the place being almost empty. Wasn't horrible but wasn't speedy or attentive either. I wish Yelp did "half stars" cuz I'd put Bair Bistro at 2.5 instead of 3 - it's not really "A-OK" as 3-stars says - it was "passable but not much else". VERY nice charm factor though - we will be back for an afternoon tea and scone on a rainy or snowy day for the atmosphere. But won't be doing lunch here again soon. Dave & Anne read more

This is such a cute little place along the water in Steilacoom. The restaurant is a lot more spacious then you would think looking in, lots of trinkets to look at, and the place is just full of personality. I had the lavender mimosa and it was AMAZING! The waitress was so helpful and so friendly and the food was phenomenal as well. My boyfriend got the french toast ham and cheese sandwich and it was fluffy and delicious. I drove down to Steilacoom along Chambers Creek and the waterfront, a scenic way to enter this old town. There was an electric car show going on that day, and the town was packed. I ordered the BLT sandwich, which came with seasoned French fries. It was good, with plenty of bacon, as well as ripe tomatoes and leaf lettuce. This is a very cute little place, with lots of the original furniture and period items. These include the old mail boxes at the rear. The servers were friendly and helpful. It was worth the trip. The best clam chowder I have ever had! Gluten free too. Seriously. I've been to Boston and have had "authentic Boston clam chowder", hands down this is better than them all. The eggs florentine is superb as well, and made to near perfection. The service is friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed with a bit of historical energy, and the food is truly fresh. The waffle cone ice creams is a huge bonus too. Though the serving sizes could've been a bit larger. Their menu even states that the wait may be a bit longer due to the food being made to order. It says its a hardware store on the outside so it threw me off but its a nice little restaurant. I read some reviews and expected slow service. It was slower than most places but they refilled our drinks and were friendly. When the food came out it was so good! We were all impressed with our meals. One of my favorite places to grab breakfast and enjoy sitting and watching the small town vibes but I went in this morning to grab breakfast and the server really rubbed me completely wrong. We walked in with 2 of us and she asks us to sit at a two top with no other tables in the building... I ask if we can sit at a bigger table and she tells me she is trying to train smaller parties to sit at smaller tables because when it gets busy on weekends she doesn't have larger tables for larger parties... makes sense, except it's Wednesday morning and you have no one in your restaurant. She tells us to go ahead and sit at a larger table and when we pick one she then asks us to pick one farther in the back... That was it for me and I had to walk out before I spoke to her in a disrespectful manor... what kind of customer service is this??? I'm so disappointed when all I wanted was a nice breakfast this morning and now I'm so turned off of one of my favorite places. read more

The food was great! However, the service was slow and we were left feeling ignored. I would appreciate having staff check in on us if we are expected to wait a long time. We waited to order, waited for our food and waited for the check, all without being checked on- even something as simple as, "we are understaffed and appreciate you waiting" would have sufficed. This was my favorite breakfast spot 20 years ago when I was stationed here. The restaurant is under new ownership. The food remains the same great food for a really good price. The atmosphere is cozy and feels like home. The eggs Benedict was just as good as I remember. I was able to observe the wait staff, they were friendly and inviting. They were quick to accommodate special orders from the other guests there. When I asked about an old favorite milk shake they did not have it but were able to make a suggestion and presented an alternative that was equally as good as the old favorite. I loved eating here years ago and am very happy to be able to return to a place that still feels like home with great food. Went here for lunch on a Thursday with a group of four. There were only two other occupied tables at that time, and we were seated right away. Our server was friendly, brought us water and gave us a few minutes to look over the extensive menu. The ambiance is great, with all of the history of the building and things to look at on the walls and shelves -- it's like going to lunch and a museum in one. It is very clean, comfortable temperature, and well lit with indirect sunshine. Our server came back to take our order, and we ordered a combination of breakfast and lunch items, since it was about 12:30 and they serve breakfast until 1pm. The server had to look at the clock to make sure it was before 1 o'clock, and had a little bit of concern on her face. I thought maybe this meant she and the kitchen were in "lunch mode", but I was craving eggs benedict and wasn't going to change my mind. Now my only complaint could be inserted here, if it wasn't for the fact that I was really enjoying my company and conversation. From when we ordered to when our lunch arrived, took 50 minutes. There were only two tables of two that came in behind us, so it wasn't that they were busy. I am guessing that they just have a one-person kitchen, and the food is very homemade tasting and cooked to order, so it takes a little longer. I had the patience and the time, but for someone on a timed lunch break, this would not be the place to go. My eggs benedict were very flavorful, the hollandaise sauce was smooth. The seasoned potatoes are very flavorful with a strong combination of herbs and spices. They were a bit on the cold side, I am assuming they might have been cooked first and waited on the plate while the main dish was prepared. The prices are very reasonable and competitive for a place with such charm. Overall, I would recommend this place and I will visit again, when I have a nice block of time to enjoy it. read more

I LOVE the fact they have gluten free food... We've come one time before and had bad service, but liked the food and thought to try it again. Today we came back and it was pretty bad. 3 servers on, 10 couples in the restaurant... And service was still bad. When I received my eggs not the right way (which is fine, mistakes happen) the server told me who I had to flag down because she dropped off the food and ran ... That she wasn't my sever and couldn't help me. It seemed like my server was the only one doing any of the work... Which made her impossible to talk to. I also had to walk to the kitchen to ask for ketchup and Tabasco. The servers seem busy with cleaning and talking and everything else but the service. Coffee was great, and love the building :) but besides that... Won't be coming back, sorry! read more

This is our new favorite breakfast place. Our server Kelley was friendly and attentive. Coffee is delicious! My husband and I split eggs Benedict and biscuits and gravy breakfast. All made from scratch. Perfect poached eggs and homemade sausage gravy with plenty of sausage. Not much salt which was a plus since we have to watch our sodium. We go to few restaurants because of this so the bistro has been added to our go to list. We took a homemade cinnamon roll and scone home to. I don't usually care for scones as they tend to be dry and bland, but this was soft and sweeter. The cinnamon roll as well was fresh with a lot of frosting. This place has the worst service I have had in a long time. (Sun 10am) There was no waiting line or people sitting outside, so it really wasn't that busy. You had to wait to be seated, wait another ten min or more for them to ask what you want to drink. My friend finally gets a half a cup of coffee and they never return. The table next to us came in five minutes later but was served first. My friend finally chases them down for more coffee, I try it, it is horrible. When I get my food delivered first, I thought to wait for my friends food to come. It didn't. After five minutes plus, I asked a kid cleaning a table nicely to go and get the damn food. He agreed, turned and continued to clean this table for another few minutes. Five minutes later I see the kid and put my hand in the air as if "what is going on". He smiles and does nothing. Funny thing, not really, is that my friend ordered quiche, it is premade. Finally she gets up and asks for it, it comes 12 min. after mine. The employees here are not being taught the basics of service and it does not come natural to them. The person in charge must not care and should hire someone to save this place. It is a great location and the food was okay. Get better coffee! This is the most frustrated I have left a restaurant in ....since I can remember. The inside is beautiful but I don't plan on eating here ever again. They took a while to take our orders and then when we finally got our food, they had given my plate to someone else and asked if I wanted the other persons plate. I really did not feel like starting the whole waiting process over again so I grudgingly accepted.
