    Chocolate torta
    Michael M.

Great setting and fantastic food. Slightly slow service but the servers and staff do their best. We went for dinner prior to Jesus Christ Superstar and made reservations for 6:45 online. Shuttle from the zoo when they start and we got seated just before our reservation. Wife went with the salmon and I had the rib eye. We added the fried potatoes and had the chocolate torta for dessert. The salmon was great and the steak was cooked very well. Our server was not the one that took our order though. The manager noticed we were just sitting and took our order right away. He must have noticed that we were waiting for a bit and put a rush because we got our food out prior to the table next to us who had been there for a little bit. I think the guy made a comment to the server about that. Paired Cabernet was good. The torta was probably the highlight for me I wish the serving was just a tad bigger. Over a good meal in a convenient location for a night at the bowl.

This is an excellent restaurant inside the Hollywood Bowl. Reservation is strongly recommended. We have reserved every one of our season ticket events for this year. Food is excellent and the ambience is second to none if you want to be almost next to the stage. The ambience is so great that the food tastes so much better just because...LOL.. So, come to The Backyard whenever you are coming to Hollywood Bowl. You won't be disappointed. Oh why only 4 stars, you asked? Too difficult to get a table sometimes, that is why.

Hidden away behind one of the screens is The Backyard at The Hollywood Bowl. The The entrance is behind the popcorn stand, up a few stairway. Super out-sight gem. Our waiter Alex, Ryan Reynolds look alike, was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable of the menu. Every dish he suggested was perfection. The handsome bar tender was on point bring refills at the right time. Ribeye, huge proportion, tender, juicy and with flavors only a wood fire grill can give. The sauce, it's witchcraft pairing with this protein. Lamb, look at my picture. That says it all. The lamb cooked pink in the middle, the sauce elevated this dish with such freshness. I drink the sauce in buckets. Service, food, and ambience, all top notch. And you can't be the location.

Located inside the Hollywood bowl venue. Make reservations so that you are on the premises just before your concert. We were seated right away. Our server seemed to have been in a rush...I could almost hear her tapping her pen on her order pad... The bread app is great. The rib eye was thinner and fattier than most I've had. For $65 I expected a better cut of meat. The Mac and cheese was definitely the star of the dinner They don't offer hard alcohol because they are a city/county park, so they use an alcohol called saba (?) which I think is wine based to make their cocktails. I ordered a $16 mojito that tasted nothing like a mojito. I'd recommend sticking to the wine or beer. I love the convenience but probably won't go back.

A lovely venue to dine at before seeing a show at the Hollywood Bowl. The is full of excitement, people hanging at the bar and others seated dining. You can order a bottle of wine and if you don't finish it, they will give you a bucket and cups to take to your seats. The bread was tasty, be sure to sprinkle a little salt on it. Both the succotash and the ceviche had good flavor. The lamb was okay.. good flavor, the temperature was cooked more than I'd like but it was tender and flavorful. My husband had the seabass. You must make reservations.. this is a hot spot and gets crowded. Felt really rushed by the server to orders. They kept coming by to check on us but it didn't feel like they were checking to see if we were good with everything it felt as tho they were checking to see how long we'd take to finish.

Excellent waitstaff but if you order grilled items make sure you tell them not to overcook - both the sea bass and the lamb chops were on the dry side. The salads are refreshingly light and tasty with an unusual combination of ingredients. Small, cozy covered balcony (between doors 1 & 2) with views of the Bowl.

The service was absolutely on pointe thanks to Kaiya, Teri, and Randy. Warm, polished, attentive, and just the right amount of fun. Hubs and I split everything, which was the right move because this meal was rich, delicious, and very filling. We started with the baguette bread service, which is an additional charge but 100% worth it. The bread, salted butter, and mixed berry spread were pure France in a basket. Next up was the French onion soup, and wow. Cheesy, full of flavor, with a beautiful broth that somehow managed to be rich without being too salty. Perfection. Then came the Big Mec burger, as seen on Food Network's top burgers -- and yes, it absolutely lives up to the hype. Definitely enough for two. Perfectly seasoned patties, melty cheese, a fresh brioche bun, and that bordelaise sauce bath underneath? Flavor-forward, decadent, and unforgettable. We rounded out the meal with a slice of French toast because apparently we make excellent life choices. Also delicious, also worth sharing. This was not just lunch -- it was an experience. Will I go back? Absolument! Next up: dinner.

Got seated on the patio on a beautiful day, so we were perfectly happy. After a quick glance at the menu, our recommendations from our server, we decided to order. We started with the escargot, as one does at a French restaurant, and the French onion soup. The escargot cube bathed in butter, garlic and parsley and were very tasty. I mean, how can they not be when bathed in garlic and butter? The French onion soup was also delicious with ample gruyere cheese overflowing. Pure indulgence! For entrees, we all tried something different. The steak frites were.... steak frites. If you've tried one, you've tried most, so not very memorable. The duck confit was cooked well and not overly fatty, which was nice. The omelette, let me say, is beautiful to look at. You almost don't want to touch it because it is very picrure-esque, and absolutely cooked perfectly. A, dare I say, perfect omelette. Finally was the Big Mec. Now, there are a lot of good burgers in Los Angeles, but the Big Mec is one of the greats. So much flavor with the double wagyu patties, cheese, special sauce all while sitting in a Bordelaise sauce. It isn't something you would eat every day, as it is heavy, but it is phenomenal when you do. I'd say one of the top five burgers in Los Angeles, in my humble opinion. Overall, delicious French restaurant in Hollywood, a little above Hancock Park, serving delicious food. Get the escargot and French onion soup to start, and definitely get the omelette and the Big Mec, you will not be disappointed.

It remains a unique addition to the neighborhood, as well as a good place to grab some interesting dishes. Since the opening of this particular business, the Zinc chain has opened in a few other locations. Those locations are much newer in not only their establishment but their design. This is not to say that this is still not an interesting, well-designed business, but, with time, it has become a little bit rundown. I hate to say it, but that is the truth. This location could really use an update and perhaps a deep cleaning. I was, in fact, kind of surprised at the condition of this business, for example, on the way towards their restrooms. From my opinion, it needs an clean up and an update. Also, the litter that surrounded some of the outdoor tables where I was sitting at my most recent visit was very surprising. This is just something to keep in mind if you're coming here for your first visit. In terms of what they offer for food, though it has evolved a bit over the years, they still have a great, heath-based menu, with some very interesting choices. For all of you vegetarians and vegans out there, you will, for sure, be able to find some tasty food to eat. Once upon a time, this restaurant was impacted with tons and tons of people. It was constantly full with people either going to the bakery and/or sitting down for table service. Shortly past their opening each day, there would be a line of people waiting for service. This seems to have changed, however. Meaning, if you're looking for an interesting place to eat, with some good dishes, at the far Southeast side of DTLA, near the lofts district, and you want a place without a long wait to get a table and/or your food, this may still be your place to go.

Maccheroni Republic - Life is full of pasta-bilities!…read more So if you know anything about me, you know that I love pasta more than just about anything. While I can only officially claim about 12% Italian heritage, I'm 100% down for Italian food, especially homemade pasta, any day of the week. I'm spending this week in Little Tokyo for a conference, and while Japanese food is also absolutely my jam, when Maccheroni Republic slid into my Yelp feed, I knew that I had to hoof it over there immediately after we broke for the day. I saw the front of the building, and my heart sank because it looked closed, but then I noted the sign that indicated that the entrance is on the right side of the building through the courtyard. Thank goodness! I strutted through the courtyard, and observed about 15 people waiting for tables. Unbothered, I went up to the host stand and chatted with the stylish maitre'd - Dino - who indicated that he could have a table for me in 7-10 minutes. I proceeded to wait and I watched how he deftly sat the other waiting parties in order without difficulty or notes. To the untrained eye, it might have looked a little chaotic, but Dino absolutely knew what he was doing. About 15 minutes later, Dino sat me at a corner deuce in the inside dining room where I had a nice view of everything. Angel efficiently took my order and did a very good job of overseeing my table as well as about nine others. The dining room is so cute and homey, and the patio is a welcome respite from the bustle and business of downtown. Since I was "da sola" or on my own, I just tried the shrimp cakes and I ordered the Rigatoni all Norma which is one of of my go to pasta dishes since I don't eat much meat. Incidentally, this dish is named after Norma, the famous 19th-century opera composed by Catanese native Vincenzo Bellini. According to legend, a famous Sicilian playwright, Nino Martoglio, tried the pasta and was so overwhelmed by its perfection that he exclaimed, "Chista è 'na vera Norma!" ("This is a true Norma!"), comparing the culinary masterpiece to the musical one. So says Wikipedia anyway. The shrimp cakes were delivered quickly by a sweet food runner who kindly checked on me periodically during my dinner. The four shrimp cakes were accompanied by sauteed onions which paired really nicely with the crispy cakes that were brightened with a spritz from the fresh lemon wedge. She also brought a basket with four slices of Italian bread which I enjoyed with the EVOO and Balsamic that were on the table. My Watermelon Ciao was also so good. It was sweetly tart and such a nice treat on a Monday! Not long after I polished off the shrimp cakes, the rigatoni was delivered and dusted with a generous layer of parmigiana. The little fresh mozzarella pearls glistened on the top of the pasta and slowly melted and oozed into the sauce as I stirred it up. Yum! The rigatoni were al dente and delicious, and they were perfectly sauced. Of course, the eggplant was perfectly cooked as well, I only wish there had been a few more pieces of it - although by the time I ate the last noodle, I was so full! Alas, I had no room for dessert, but I intend to bring some of my conference colleagues back for a meal before the end of the week because it was THAT GOOD. I also loved that this place is NOT pretentious at all. There were all sorts of folks enjoying their food here from medical professionals in scrubs to college kids in shorts and t-shirts, and I was also very casually attired, but I was treated well and welcomed with graciousness and delicious food! Mille grazie Maccheroni Republic, Dino, Angel and everyone at this wonderfully lowkey yet fabulous trattoria.
