Cute bar located in a neighborhood. It's like a speakeasy with craft cocktails. The decor is really artsy, it reminds me of Egyptian decor. The bar was packed on a Saturday night. They had couches and tables throughout. The building it's located in is pretty historic too since it had a plaque outside. I'm glad my friend suggested this place because the drinks were affordable and tasty. I had the mule drink served in a copper mug. It was a little tart but good. I noticesd these type of craft speakeasy bars are popping up everywhere which is good since it caters to the 30 plus crowd. Ok so I went back this summer and realized I was previously critiquing based on it being a fancy cocktail bar. This is not a fancy cocktail bar. It is a no frills neighboring watering hole that serves more than just well drinks. Don't expect to taste the most delicious drink of your life, but for $10-11 a cocktail I think they get that. The prices all around are very reasonable, especially in this climate where everything is outlandishly priced. The inside is cozy and nice but with a bit of grunge. The outdoor square is delightful. Honestly I used to love this place, but the other night when I went, the bartender was incredibly rude in multiple instances of our back and forth about their drinks. When I asked if they had non dairy options for drinks, they replied snarkily that they weren't a grocery store. They then went on to say they didn't have orange juice for mixed drinks. Very sexy, dimly lit cocktail bar that has a pretty decent craft beer selection, too! Went on a super slow Tuesday night and we were two of only 10 people. Very chill vibe, great R&B music, and intricate wall decor. Would totally recommend this place for a pre/post dinner date night drink. Good for singles, couples, or small groups. I had the Sour Cherry Limeaid which was $8 and that is dope considering I usually pay $12 or more for cocktails in SF or NYC. Hands down the BEST and only neighborhood bar really and it's amazing for that reason alone. Tucked away from the main streets of atwells and broadway Lies the avery. Blending in with the neighborhood you may not even notice it until its lit up at night. The mood inside is dark but rustic looking. Not tok many lights there. So its intimate. It's a craft cocktail bar so no food and it's all focused on craftsmanship and cocktails. So dont head there if you are hungry. Bartenders are accurate with all the drinks. Not ALWAYS overly friendly but gets the job done. They make and amazing cherry gin limeade and an amazing mule. Their list change up a little here and there but those are my go to drinks. If your here for a first date that's a good idea, for a business meeting I wouldnt go there. The lack of light and loud noise dont make a good business space. But a date or catching up with an old friend is a good idea. I'm glad the avery is here when I need to get away! read more

Pretty neat location. It's super dark , has a very intimate feel to it. I'd love to bring my partners here on a cute date. It's right in front of a Japanese restaurant and next to Bucktown. I enjoyed my cider based drink. The cocktail options were slightly underwhelming but I'm not super verse on what a diverse menu would look like. I wish they served spicy margaritas but that's just clearly a biased thought. I'd say , give it a try and meet friends for drinks; it's super cozy. read more

I agree with most of the other yelp reviews here: extremely dark, gets very loud, good cocktails. However, the last time I went the service was just straight up unacceptable (5/24/19). The male and female bartender both deliberately ignored us. We were there on the earlier side, and they saw us waiting and made eye contact; the male bartender walked over to us as if to service us, then poured himself a drink. It was almost comical! The female bartender actually rolled her eyes at us at one point when she had to check the menu to see how much the drink cost, as if it was our fault? I always liked this bar, but I have no plans of returning. I regret tipping on my first drink and tipped $0 after that arrogant display. Very disappointing. read more

The Avery has disappointed me two times with its lackluster cocktails and service. I really did want to like The Avery--I love speakeasies and the vibe really looks cool from all of the pictures you'll see on Yelp. The vibe actually *is* cool and it's situated well in its neighborhood. It's just from there where your whole experience takes a nose dive. If you're going earlier in the evening you can have a conversation, but as the night goes on forget about it. I can't beat around the bush about this--the cocktails are just plain bad. The ginger sidecar tastes like a glass of pure alcohol with no actual ginger. I had higher hopes for the I Love Lassi another time, but that missed the mark too. Your drinks will be served to you with a huge helping of attitude from any bartender of your choice. Fun, right? There are much better places to grab a cocktail in town. There's an old adage, "If it's too loud, you're too old." Is there one about a place being "too dark?" Make no mistake: I love The Avery. I've been here multiple times. Always charmed by the art, style, music, and service. The cocktails are top notch and inspired. Their bartenders make a mean dirty martini. I'm a fan. The missing star is only because of the lighting. There have been a couple times where it's simply too dark, I can't see the floor to know I'm not going to fall flat on my face as I walk to the restroom...fine, "stumble" my way to the restroom. And I've definitely found myself holding the brightness of my phone up to the cocktail menu. But again, they make a great drink. read more

Avery is this super fancy and local community bar to stop by with a date or a small group of friends before heading off to other ventures. this weekend i visited the avery with the intention of having a drink after an incredible meal down the street at there there (a phenomenal burger institution!), however the high i was on from my wurst dog, was deflated upon entrance at the avery, as i attempted to have a friend take a photo of me from outside while i was inside. the bartender named karen, ironically, asked curtly "can i help you?" to which i responded, "sorry am i being asked to leave?" to which she retorted "yes." and thus i left. while i did understand venues may have a photo policy, which i can understand/respect, however this is no way to treat someone who has been, and had intended to be a customer that day. i entered the space with a fulfilled palette, and left with the most sour taste in my mouth. id like to give credit to the avery, as i've never had such a negative experience there, and if genuine attempts are made to ameliorate, im happy to take down this review, but this experience i find important for all venues in gentrified areas to be aware of how they treat people of color in particular, for the statement it makes about who's welcome in the space and who isn't, please do better, karen. read more

I have to say I love the Avery despite the fact I've never had a bartender smile at me, or even in my general direction. Maybe one did once. But they do craft amazing cocktails, and perhaps that's an angsty artisty thing. But the ambiance! I feel like I've stumbled upon some hidden, magical place in the enchanted forest of a JRR Tolkein novel whenever I come here. It's woody and decorated and dimly lit (as if by torches!) and I just think it's really super cool. Couches and small round tables. Long bar. I went this past Saturday night and we had our CHOICE OF SEATS (that never happens)(but I won't question this miracle), so it was very comfortable. And the drinks! So good! I've had nearly everything on the menu--Moscow Mule is a favorite and the St. Avery Cosmopolitan--but the Pink Paradise, which is new, TASTES LIKE PARADISE. I'm not kidding. I used to live there (okay, "Hawaii," but it's close enough) and this drink will make you feel like you're in Hawaii. Great bar in a low key place. It's very dimly lit and there's no sign outside but it's the blue building on the corner. Inside, the ceiling is and walls are very nicely cut and decoration is superb. Bartenders are very nice and the beer list is extensive. It's not too expensive either. Most cocktails are 10 or under. I got the Narragansett lager which was light, relatively cheap and was a good amount. Overall, I'll come back with friends for more beer or cocktails. Only reason why this place or 4 stars instead of 5 is because it's REALLY CROWDED. The staff is friendly, because it's so dark inside it's almost hidden which appeals to its speakeasy vibe, but there was a lot of people therefor how small it was. But our drinks were amazing. And it has a dark and mysterious ambience leaving you feeling like you're in a scene right out of the movie (From Dusk Till Dawn)! The bartenders were very nice and accommodating. I am pleased to relay to the Yelpiverse a message delivered unto me by a carrier pigeon: The Fedora Has Arrived in Providence. As far as I can tell, this is the only cocktail bar in Providence that would be at home in NY. About time. The beautiful decor has me wanting to own a replica of the Narragansett Electric nude, the drink menu is classic and varied, and there are lots of beer options. One suggestion would be to change the name of the St. Germain Cosmopolitan--it is, thankfully, not a cosmo. I didn't order it but could smell the fresh grapefruit juice from down the bar, and it deserves a better name that doesn't conjure 1999. It seems like you can BYO food here. Ahh the Avery. Another great hole in the wall, except it isn't a "hole" at all. Its a great outoftheway bar, that now serves pita w/hummus and chips n salsa. The lights are dim, the walls are artistically silouetted with naked women, and the drinks are made to perfection. -really my kind o place- My favourite is the bloody mary made with cucumber vodka. Can we say "fab"? Why yes. Yes we can. The owner is a sweetheart. Parking can be tough, but who can't walk a couple of blocks for all that wondefulness? Its a small room inside a historic house. The seating can be tight, so if you don't like rubbing shoulders now and then, don't go on a fri/sat night. Otherwise sieze the moment, smile and say "hello" to your fellow imbiber. What a great find! Love it. We didn't see a sign but you can tell you're in the right spot from the art deco lights glowing through the windows. The bas-relief walls and ceiling are a total trip and are alone worth the trip. The bartenders know their trade and can craft up a storm (although the shaking was a little weak - put some passion into it!). I had the Lovecraft's Lament (genever, St. Elder, blood orange soda, mint bitters, and a prosecco float), which was great. I Love Lassi (cuke vodka, yogurt liqueur, mango nectar, orgeat, and soda water) was refreshing and is really more of a summer drink, so I hope they keep it around for when the mercury is on the rise. The Shift Drink and Nor'Wester were strong but also good. The background music ranged from the 80's to present and was decent, barring a few hip hop tunes that were out of place even in the eclectic mix,. Because its a neighbourhood bar, their building kinda blend in with the rest of the houses but its the DARK BLUE BUILDING ON THE CORNER INTERSECTION between carpenter n battey st i think. Absolutely love the decor and the lighting and the overall design of the bar. I ordered a cosmo and my bf had the german draught beer. It came up to $13 which is not bad. Strong, delicious and it hit the spot. Then i was drawn to their cocktail menu and decided to order the Ginger Sidecar which is this Canton ginger, cognac, lemon juice and sumthin else and sugar rim. Wow im in love! I had two because it was closing time but i would have had more if I could! They also offer wide selections on bottled beers and they have Innis and Gunn beer which is a plus in my book! Your bartender (short white woman, hoop earrings, tattoo sleeves) continually, actively ignored my friend and me after we asked for water - the only two people of color in a full bar - and we watched multiple parties served while we waited for water that never arrived. We had ordered a round of drinks and planned to stay for more, but we were so turned off the vibe and staff here that we had to leave. We stopped in on a Friday night while waiting for a table at North. That seems to be a pretty common theme here based on the faces I saw in both locations. The drinks menu is varied and every one we tried was a winner. It's very dark in there and the interior is beautiful. The bar is back lit with large mural light fixtures. The walls are chiseled wood and the seating a comfy collection of banquette, barrel seats and lovely little side tables. The bartenders were cool under pressure and I really appreciate the pocketbook hooks under the bar! Nice touch. From the outside you would never know this was a bar, or that it was even open! But it's definitely both. Located in a neighborhood, parking is on the street so be prepared to walk a little bit. This is a beverage only location. No bar nosh here. Really great spot for a drink. Though made the mistake of going on a Friday night with a first date and it gets to be really noisy and packed since it's on the smaller side. The Avery is a great spot if you are looking to grab a quick drink before dinner or just want a place to hang out for a bit. The bartenders are always nice and are very engaging. They are willing to go through all of their drinks and explain them to you. Their recommendations are usually on point and always have something you are in the mood for. The bar sort of reminds me of a speakeasy where it is dimly lit, and the music whenever I go is usually some sort of Indie Rock or Jazz music. The bar attracts all sorts of people from old to young the crowd is never the same. I would recommend this bar as a bar to begin or end at. It isn't really a bar to hang at for hours on hours. Not that you couldn't do that, but that's not the vibe I catch when I'm there. Whenever I go it's usually for an hour to an hour and a half. The place is relatively small with bar seating, and table and sort of like booth seating with tables. I wouldn't recommend taking a large group here, but 4-8 people is definitely possible. I always seem to end up at this bar whenever I am on the West Side of Providence. It's cool and inviting, and I've never had any sort of problem here.
