A nautical-themed bar on Ives St, Captain's Seaweeds is a fun little bar. It has some elements of a dive bar, but I wouldn't really call it that. While they do have a pool table and fairly cheap beer, imbibers are generally from around the neighborhood, not really the typical dive bar crowd. I mean, there was a group playing with Beyblades when we came. They don't serve food, but there are a couple good options nearby and they'll let you bring in takeout. They do have an outdoor area when the weather's nice, but during the winter the bar tends to get pretty crowded. Lots of nautical themed decorations, which help give it a unique character. All in all, a good option if you're coming for a few drinks and then heading home, but it's a little out of the way if you're trying to bar hop or don't live in the area. read more

Had a good time for a meet up event here. The only gripe I have about this place is they charged me for a extra transaction I didn't make. Tried calling bar and no one picked up. Filed a dispute with my credit card company, and the charge wasn't reversed, they provided "documentation". In reality they took my card and ran it twice on the integrated chip reader for one transaction. I'm going to chalk it up to chip reader error on their end as they overcharged me. I noticed it even on the pending transactions in my account when it happened ,they charged me twice for 1 round of drinks. I waited till it posted so I could file a dispute. As I tipped on all the other 20 dollar transactions and they were 25 dollars each when posted and this one was without a tip when posted. read more

Friendly dive with a great outdoor area. I was here in the summer and ordered a refreshing Schlitz cocktail, my favorite drink for a warm day. Traditionally, a Schlitz cocktail is a can of Schlitz served with whipped cream and a cherry on top. The bartender whipped it up (pardon the pun) using 'Gansett instead of Schlitz which isn't technically authentic but was fine with me and seemed like a nice regional substitute. Also, speaking of regional differences, the bartender politely explained to me that in Rhode Island it's not called a "Schlitz Cocktail" but a "Schlitz Sundae" and that I was exposing myself as an out-of-towner when I called it a Schlitz cocktail. Let me start off by saying that I will definitely be returning to this location in the future. Stopped in here with a bunch of friends on a bar hopping evening and truly wished I had more time to spend. Yes, this is a dive bar. Is that a bad thing? Absolutely not. Captain Seaweed (expertly depicted on the front door of this establishment) must have decorated this place with baubles, paintings, and tchotchkes acquired on his many treacherous adventures across the oceans of the world. Sharks toting human arms, ancient scrolls, oil painting of ships, tiki roofs, skeletal pirates, and curvaceous mermaids adorn the inner and outer walls of this bar. Well-lit, the explosion of nautical themed items combined with scattered seating provide for a quirky, interesting, but enjoyable experience. Although it was about 20 degrees outside, many of us went outside to explore and enjoy the open-air seating. We were surprised to find an outdoor heater and promptly turned it on as we huddled around it. I would be interested in relaxing out there during appropriate weather and utilize the seclusion it provides from the busy nature of Ives St. It interests me that there is a residential deck located just above all the action of the outdoor patio for this business. . . I can only imagine what its like to have a nautical/tropical themed backyard as a view. Drinks are ridiculously cheap here. . . offers of $1 Captain Seaweeds Lager and a $2 glasses of mysterious concoctions labeled "Comment" and "No Comment" are sure to go easy on the wallet. Nautical-themed neighborhood bar in a scenic part of Providence near Brown University. My girlfriend and I had planned to come to Captain Seaweeds while visiting the city and stopped in right when it opened. The building is pretty unassuming from the outside as it is located in a quiet part of town, though there is plenty to stare at as soon as you walk in the front door - the walls are covered with interesting trinkets from ship wheels and pirates to a 5-ft tiki sculpture in the corner. The outdoor patio is even more decked-out - much larger than I was expecting and fully-equipped with private tables and unique decor, including a coy pond and life-size statue of the ol' Cap'n himself. The best part of our time here was spent interacting with Michael - the man behind the bar. He was very friendly, engaging, and had plenty of great stories to tell. We felt very welcome the entire time and will definitely be stopping in again the next time we're in Providence! read more

This was my second time at this bar. A couple observations- It's way too pretentious to be a dive, so that was disappointing. If you're not local, you're treated differently. There's definitely a group of very young looking girls that run that place just on the basis that "they're locals." Plus, one of the bartenders gave me the creeps and ignored us to prioritize said group of girls. It's a joke. I'm active duty military and the first time I got carded, I was accused of provided a fake (with my CAC.) This place is a joke, most of the bartenders are out of control, and the "locals" get to choose what other patrons are served and which ones are not. It's trash, and the restroom was disgusting almost as soon as it was open. My only recommendation is that you don't go and management maybe considers how precious the locals are or how young they look. read more

After coming here for years tonight was the last straw. The 35-year old bartender was too busy hitting on college aged girls to serve drinks at the bar. Then he proceeded to raise his voice and kick us out of our table with 12 minutes until close. He continually screamed and yelled at customers to leave the bar when it hadn't even closed yet. Then he proceeded to tell someone that he would drag them out by their legs. Completely disrespectful service and I will NEVER be back. read more

I've been wanting to check this place out for a while since seeing pictures online, and Gansett were having a release party for one of their beers so it was the perfect excuse to go. It definitely has a neighborhood bar vibe to it. Everyone seems to know everyone, there were people of all ages just hanging out and catching up. It's a cool place to people watch. Everyone is very cool and friendly. The bartenders were great, very attentive. Even when we moved outside they kept checking in on us to make sure we were doing good. The drinks are good, and cheap too! The only bad thing was the weather, which they couldn't help! We will definitely be going back when the weather is nice so we can relax outside amongst the cool nautical decor they've got going on. read more

I had no idea what to expect when I brought...a hummer limo of 20 people in here for my birthday. There was sword play, there were mermaids, there was swashbuckling pirates shooting us from the crows nest! The ale flowed like the spirit of the ocean, and the women dressed like the sirens of the sea! But seriously, dollar beers, 2 dollar 'no comment' jungle juice, good crowd, good bartenders, pool table, and an outside area I call "Davey Jones Locker" (Or DJL for short) where there are statues of skeleton pirates and women growing out of the walls. Tiki torches, a grill, propane fueled heaters, a river that circles around the whole area with trees, and large rustic fences keeping out the common land grubbin folk from the streets. Not sure how it's taken me 12 years to write a review of Captain Seaweeds because it's by far, hands down, one of my favorite dive-y bars in Providence. It's cheesy and over the top, the outside patio deck is the best during those warm summer nights to enjoy a drink with your friends; ambiance is kitschy and cozy. The only downfall is because it's situated in a residential neighborhood on the East Side, they stop serving about 10 minutes to midnight and if you're sitting outside, they usher you in before 11 p.m. as to not disturb the neighbors. Great dive bar without being TOO divey! This place is a great balance of cheesy nautical decor and cheap drinks, yet clean restrooms. What could be better? Even the bartender and what seemed to be "regular" patrons were super friendly, which is usually not typical of a local dive bar. I really enjoyed the old school tunes on the juke box and the pool table (pretty cheap for both). The patio in the back is covered and lit up, but it was a bit cold and rainy for me to venture out. I'm a fan of Captain Seaweed's. It isn't really so much a dive bar (i.e. a cheap bar looking to attract people from everywhere) as it is a neighborhood bar (the "sketchy people" that everyone keeps complaining about live in the neighborhood and in general aren't as sketchy as skittish Brown students make them out to be). They have cheap drinks, don't care much about service (but you don't go to a bar for the service do you?), and have an AWESOME patio. So to be clear, if you are looking for a hip divey bar where local hipsters congregate this is not for you. If you live within a few blocks and want to go drink beer outside and don't mind your neighbors then you have found your place. Also the fact that it closes at midnight should surprise absolutely no one. It has nothing to do with the bar deciding to close at midnight and everything to do with city zoning laws. The area is zoned residential. It's the same reason that E&O has to kick it at midnight. read more

Last night I left captain seaweeds with no tab (the credit card machine wasn't working correctly) and two live lobsters. You read correctly folks, two LIVE lobsters. What more can you want from a dive? If an American Legion and an Ocean State Job Lot had a love child, it would be named Captain Seaweeds. Although you probably wouldn't want to go there solo (some of the clientele is a little, dare I say, "rough" around the edges), it's the perfect hangout when you want a no thrills cheap pitcher of beer and a round of pool. The music (jukebox) was awful, the bartender spent the whole night texting, the crowd was shady (and not in the endearing down in out way but the I'll-shank-you-in-the-parking-lot variety), and the lights were on full blast until they closed at twelve on a FRIDAY NIGHT!
