Patio is a plus but they close it down way too early. Last time I was there the AC was CRANKED...this was in July and I wanted to get my coat. This is by no means a cool dive bar. The above reviews like it because they don't have to be around people that look exactly like them, I presume. But make no mistake, if you weren't going here to prove a point you'd probably just stay home and drink. And cry. Which I do alot these days. Please help me. I'll be at Captain Seaweed's tonight if anyone wants to come drown their sorrows with me. read more

The $7 pitcher is a great value and can keep you pleasantly hydrated for an evening. Active and friendly patrons and great atmosphere, with lots of taxidermied fish and sharks. The music is loud but smooth. Nice collection of nautical and pirate artwork on site. Great outdoor area in back for smoking that is mermaid and pirate themed. A favorite place of mine' read more

This is a 5-star dive bar, emphasis on the dive. Great place for a evening drink in the summer when all the students have fled the city. Consistently well made drinks, well placed in Providence, clean facilities, and a fun, cheesy, and fully themed patio. What else could you possibly want? If you're looking to keep your tab reasonable this summer, this is the place to go. read more

I really want to love this bar, especially since it's in my neighborhood, but after just one visit I knew there was no going back. The music (jukebox) was awful, the bartender spent the whole night texting, the crowd was shady (and not in the endearing down in out way but the I'll-shank-you-in-the-parking-lot variety), and the lights were on full blast until they closed at twelve on a FRIDAY NIGHT! And to top it all off, the drinks sucked. Seriously, don't bother. read more

The crowd here is varied but there's always definitely a sketch factor. That's why I like it. The last time I was there the music was absolutely horrible so I stepped up to jukebox to remedy the situation. I had not even picked out my first song when this completely shithoused lady with a scratchy voice stood an inch away from me shouting song requests. I did my best to get her away from me but no dice. Finally some equally drunk trashy guy starts screaming at her from the bar. It was hilarious. The night was full of nonsense. Someone I was with ordered Pizza Pie-er to deliver there. When the pizza arrived the zombies surrounded us. We ended up eating a few slices then selling the rest for $5 a slice. Highly recommend this move late night. I also had a shady guy wearing an 8 Ball jacket explain to me that he wasn't a gangster, he was a thug. Awesome. read more

I have been in many dive bars across the country, and this one is really a sketch bar. Like the filtered review said, I've heard about what goes on the bathroom. So this "rumor" seems it may have a basis. They do not take credit cards either, you must go to Victoria's (sketchy) Pizza and use the ATM. Weird place, no reason to go here. Find a dark alley or something. read more

In an area of the city that sports quite a few hidden neighborhood dives, this one has an aura of character that warrants a visit. The inside is small, yet laced with nautical paraphernalia and neighborhood cliental. It rocks the dive bar staples: jukebox, pool table, side tables, and drunk people. The beer selection is surprisingly stacked for what you would expect, albeit mostly bottles. Outside is a real treat, with back patio laced in nets, ropes, and other pieces of what may actually be authentic oceanside gear. The whole thing has an island feel to it that may make you forget your sitting in a back yard in Fox Point. Great spot for groups on the weekend (cheap pitchers) but make it stop #1 as it closes by midnight. A Story: Top 5 most bizarre experiences in the city of Providence, and I grew up here. Went for the first time with with only knowing 'hey, 2 dollar beers!' And 2 dollar beers I did, my friends. After every beer, came a raffle ticket. Without thinking anything of it, the numbers were called and by some contrary behavior of the universe I was blessed with a win! But, a win of what you ask? The bartender leaves to go to the back and returns to hand me a tray of two live lobsters in a bed of mussels. Yes, after making slightly intoxicated friends with my two new crustaceous colleagues, I ate like a king for two straight days. All for buying what I believe is PBR with a Seaweed's label pasted over it. read more

Tired of the same old bar scene? Sick of sipping $158345.00, exquisitely-crafted cocktails out of mason jars and champagne coups while avoiding the mustachioed "barkeep's" withering side-eye? Dying to drink next to a life-sized pirate statue and contemplate your life choices while gazing into a murky, burbling koi pond? Well, my friends, come to Captain Seaweed's, located under the green awning on scenic Ives St. With beers in the $1-$5 range, friendly staff, and a handful of delightfully quirky and/or crusty regulars, this joint is a true paradise, your uni-student-free, dime-store-appointed oasis in the heart of PVD. The bathrooms are decently clean; the assortment of folk art, graffiti, and mid-80's era travel posters is not to be missed, and all of the bonus points for proximity to Tallulah's, because tipsy taco consumption = good times. Throw on your tiki party worst, grab a few dolla dolla bills, and come drink, laugh, and people-watch to your heart's content...you won't be disappointed! read more

I like a little chaos in my life. And what better place for a lil' bit of chaos than Captain Seaweeds? It's not what you'd expect--it's certainly a dive, but its not nearly as skanky as its location and exterior would suggest. I was uber pleased by the house brew--Captain Seaweed's Lager is A BUCK! A BUCK, PEOPLE!! Granted, it tastes like PBR, but for a BUCK, who the heezy cares? There's also a mysterious blend of booze in a vat on the bar and I think that goes for around two bucks a pop. The decor is super weird--light wood bar and barstools, a few mismatched tables, and decorations that had to come from the Christmas Tree Shop. People watching is cool--any night of the week is bound to provide you with an original character, but it's also a solid place to get beers with a friend and catch up. read more

Sitting outside with my friends drinking cheap beer. What's not to love? Just set your expectations to remember Captain Seaweeds is a dive bar. There are no fancy drinks, no servers, no food. It's a friendly bar where you can sit outside and enjoy weather with your friends, or you can sit inside and play pool. There is no food but it's okay to bring food with you. Dok's deli is next door so getting food is easy. This could easily become that place where everybody knows your name and is always glad you came. read more

Captain Seaweed is a swashbuckling, jolly ho bloke. Whether you're a landlubber or a buccaneer, Captain Seaweed has $1.00 Seaweed Lager! Thanks for going easy on the doubloons. AHOY!!!!!! read more

Captain Seaweeds gets 3 stars in the winter, 4 stars in summer. Why? They have an awesome outdoor seating area reminscent of Bikini Bottom (hayyy Spongebob fans). Oh, and if you come on thursdays, they raffle off a lobster! That's exciting, right?! Do not get the Seaweed's draft. This advice is coming from a broke college student - IT'S NOT WORTH IT. I think it's seltzer. I swear it's not beer. Splurge on a draft of some name-brand brew (i.e. coors would be better). Also - the bartenders here have always been super nice! Never pretentious or rude, which I like a lot. read more

Great place to hang out. I love the outdoor area and cheap beer, perfect in the summer

My favorite bar in Providence so far. The owner is really nice, $2 beers. I got a T-shirt for $10 because I thought the place was so great and they gave me two. Funny atmosphere, nice back deck, and a hot dog cart. read more

What can I say, I love this place. Cheap beers, stiff cocktails, a pool table and juke box. What more do you need?? The Friday & Saturday night bartender is the best. Handsome, charming and makes a great drink. Quick update! Might be the best bar in America. Love this place. Can't believe all the hustle in the weekend bartender despite his under-active thyroid. read more

What a fun and friendly place! Great drinks, reasonable prices, and more maritime tchotchkes than you could find at a Cape Cod flea market. Sherri is the best bartender - ask for the Sherri-tini! Great stuffiies and a spacious outdoor deck. What more could you ask for in the PVD? read more

Captain Seaweeds - The Sherri-tini! - Dive Bars Near Me - Providence, Rhode Island

Loved this place. Dive bar that's more kitschy than creepy. The decor is worth a visit alone (esp. the patio). Booze is cheap ($1 house lager!!), and the bartender there when I went was very cool. My friend was feeling experimental, so she would point to a strange, uncommon liquor and ask the bartender to come up with a creative cocktail for it. Fun times! read more

Why isn't it possible to give no stars? I stopped for a couple of beers after work today. I gave the bartender my debit card for the tab. I went out to the patio, had a couple beers and then returned to settle up only to find that my card was gone. One of the bar tenders gave it to a different customer! And to add insult to injury the bartender blamed the customer! The bartender that didn't fuck it up apologized, the guy that did fuck it up said this exactly (it's a BOA card with my fucking picture on it btw) "I said to the guy this picture doesn't look like you, are you sure this is your card? He said it was an old picture and it was his card". So he gave the guy my card. He apparently didn't say "is this your name on the card?" Anyway, it was a stupid thing to do and the way he handled it was even more stupid. I canceled the card which will be a total pain in the ass for the next 10 days or so as it's a debit card and it's my only card. Had he handled it differently I'd be far less annoyed. He never said sorry or took any responsibility but instead only blamed the customer. I won't be going back but If you go there bring cash. They can't be trusted with your plastic. read more

You have to take Captain Seaweeds for what it is - a dive bar. They have 5 beers on tap, including the infamous Capt Seaweeds Lager, which is just Natty Lite, but they have a pretty extensive bottle selection. The inside is a little sad, so I don't go there in the winter, but come the warmer months, the patio is what it's all about. Decorated with every imaginable kitschy nautical themed item you can imagine, the decor makes for a great ice breaker at the beginning of the night. There are tons of tables, half circular, half picnic tables and all have umbrellas over them which makes this a cool place even in the sun. Be warned though, it is still a dive bar so the regular clientelle has just as much character as the decor. read more

Probably one of my favorite places to go on a low key summer night. The patio area is full of tchotchkes and dimly lit with string lights. Beer is cheap and the music is usually decent (90's alternative rock). It tends to attract an interesting crowd though. From my experiences of taking people here, you either think it's sketchy/strange or love it. read more

I went here a few times as a youngin' and never made my way back round that part of town til a couple weeks ago. After getting Thai food across the street we naturally wanted drinks, and the Captain's was within eye shot. My friends? Skeptical. Me? Pretty much the same. I was confident the place was cash only, but turns out its not (I have not been since 2009 so this may account for this shoddy recollection). Inside was packed, oh, yes, this is totally a student hangout. Saw all the usual suspects, pool, jukebox, etc. I knew there was a patio, and we made our way out there. The patio is a tiki and pirate themed wonderland. A tacky oasis in a backyard. Exactly where I wanted to spend one of the last official summer nights drinking. I was sad when they came out before 11 to tell us they were going to shut the yard down. They still had the infamous seaweed brew for a buck or two, but alas I couldn't get myself to down a plastic cup of white handle once I saw they accepted plastic and got a mean gin and tonic. read more

I was in providence for a work trip. We ended up heading here based on the bar tender at the Marriiot saying it was a place to check out. It is a local bar that is a hit with Brown students. Good ambiance friendly crowd and cheap drinks. If you get hungry you should try the Gourmet Stuffy. Mike the bar tender is great and makes the place even better. I will try to drink with mike again on the nest trip to Providence. read more

This bar lived up to our expectations 100%. If you appreciate nautical decor and cheap drinks, boy is this the place for you! But if you're hung up on minor details like, say, sticky floors, mildewy odors, bizarre music selection, then be gone! We don't need you here. I can't speak to the quality of the stuffies, but the fact that they even have them is charming in itself. The barkeep is friendly, the clientele makes for great eavesdropping, and it's walkable to Wickenden and other places. read more

Captain Seaweeds - The decor is worth it. And the dollar drafts. - Dive Bars Near Me - Providence, Rhode Island

I love this place. The outdoor area is kitschy and fun. I only visit in the warmer months just for that. There are some pool players running scams so beware of that. read more

But why close at 12 ,a full hour or 2 before every bar in the city. Aren't dive bars supposed to be open late

This bar is the best. Go here! Friendly service, great drinks and beer selection, very cool Tiki backyard and tons of character/ characters. Highly recommend. read more

The drinks are strong. The outside patio is fun. And the pool table is pretty horrible but in a way I can work with. I've been several times. I can easily walk there and even more importantly, avoid driving while drinking and walk home! read more

If you ever spend time on the East Side of Providence during the school year, one attribute of the city will stand out more than any other: Rich White People. "Hey wait, what is that? It looks like someone with slightly darker skin, no never mind, he's sweeping the streets." Well, fortunately there is a small ray of social justice on the East Side and its name is Captain Seaweeds. Captain Seaweeds is a dive bar. It is, however, not a dive bar in the sense that cute Brown undergrad with tights and converse is referring to when she says she loves dive bars. The drinks are cheap and the bartender is confused, probably by how cheap the drinks are but maybe because you asked for wine. Low lighting mixes with the tasteful decoration of everything nautical and hangable you can think of, vomited on every wall to make a welcoming relaxing spot to...do whatever you want. This is one of the few pockets of diversity on the East side and proves that the area surrounding brown is not only a homogenous bubble (or this place is just resting on the edge of the bubble). You can find your locals from the Wickendin crowd to the Gano, young and old, Brown student, Brown employee or otherwise. Attractions include but are not limited to: Juke box, foosball table, pool table, hammer head shark with novelty severed arm hanging from mouth, a bathroom door that doesn't latch let alone lock and the best low key time you will have on the East Side. read more

Derek is the best bartender you could ask for. He's like a young Tom Cruise in cocktail. I think he said he has an under active thyroid but that doesn't slow him down. Definitely the place to go in providence! read more

Great bar with a very nice patio. Inside is bright from the three skylights which make for a cheerful vibe. The staff is the friendliest people and make you feel so welcome. Went in for a quick drink and ended up spending hours and hours. You can't leave without a smile on your face amd a quality buzz on. Tell me that's not the definition of a good dive bar, let alone any bar. Friday's feature Sherri behind the bar and her martini skills are immense. The homemade stuffies are the real deal and the proximity to Talulahs doesn't suck either. The Captains is worth a visit--and then there's the back deck... read more

This place is sick (the good kind of sick). I'm so lucky to have lived in the area and had the option of going out for one dollar beers a short walk away. It's kind of like a night in, out. The pool table is great as is all the rediculous decorations and . They always leave me wondering "where the f#^8 am I?". A very adventurous experience. The place is family owned and operated and you get a real sense that your part of the family while your there, outsiders are very much welcome however.. It is a great place to talk to honest people and learn about different cultures. People who regard Seaweeds as "Sketchy" are really just ignorant and should probably never leave the suburbs or their bar stool at TGI Fridays. Free snacks sometimes if your nice! Please stick around seaweeds, the neighborhood needs you and all your awkward glory! read more

Cheap place to drink. They have $6 pitchers of Seaweed's Draft which kind of tastes like PBR. It has a very eclectic clientele to say the least. The best way to describe Seaweeds is divvy on the inside, tropical oasis on the outside. If you want to drink cheap on a nice night, Captain Seaweed's is a good place. The only drawback is the patio closes at 11pm. read more

"Wanna have some fun?" was the comment I initially received from a patron exiting the front door to smoke. I would have been a little more snarky in return but I was acclimating to a new place. As I acclimated I realized that I was not having fun. read more

Best bar in PVD. The patio is amazing, the drinks are affordable, and the owners are the best of people. Great place to grab a drink!

What a fun place! Captain Seaweeds is a dive bar but clean and fun. There's a great deck outside that's decorated with the silliest, tackiest items but it all kind of works. When the weather's nice, it's a great place to enjoy your drinks! The only problem is they close the deck at 12 to be courteous to the neighbors (which is very nice but stinks when you're having a good time outside). Drinks are CHEAP and the bartender is friendly. read more

Outdoor seating is a real treat. Don't get me wrong, this is a dive; I got 4 drinks for 7 bucks. But, it is a good friendly dive. I even felt like the glasses were clean enough to drink out of. I will be back. read more

One of my favorite (dive) bars in providence. This unpretentious gem doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't, right down to the dollar drafts that I haven't gotten the courage to try yet. Outside is decorated to be a tiki bar and there's limited seating but well worth waiting for if you can snag a table. A great place to hang out with friends (if they're the very non-prissy type). read more
