Our server Lilly was very gracious, prompt service throughout. Had the two breakfasts in the photos, meals were hot and delicious. Diner is casual, older style decor, from the Coke Cola vending machine, table condiments, black / white tile floor, to the soda fountain and counter. Absolutely wonderful experience, reasonable prices, would certainly recommend this diner.

I have kept my 5 star review here. We were on this side of town. Just about lunchtime, but I'm still thinking of breakfast. We walked in, and there was just a short wait to get seated. The hostess was kind, took our information, and we grabbed a seat to wait. There was one group in front of us, and once we got called, we were sat immediately. 20 min tops from walking in the door for a 4 top. Big long booths. Us girlies had to scoot down so the boys could have the edge, but still comfy. The waitress was on it and very helpful. The breakfast special was util 2pm so we had lots of time. The special was called the Ultimate Biscuits and Gravy. It was a chicken fried steak served with biscuits and gravy instead of traditional meat. Both of the guys in our party ordered it. One person ordered an omelet with gluten-free bread as a side. Bonus points for having that option. I ordered the eggs benedict with the Iowa sausage links. The pictures listed online on Yelp drew me to it. This time, I didn't have to have any holdase sauce on the side, and I asked for the hashbrowns to be extra crispy. Everything came out perfect. I greedily ate the sauce with my hashbrowns. The Iowa sausage links really added a little extra to the meal, and it was all really good. They are constantly busy being attached to a hotel but worth the wait. For the price of the meals, we were all stuffed. They even have an award on the wall for the best amount of food for the money. I'm ready to head back for that breakfast again. Yum

How have ever gone this long without sharing the wonders that are the Ankeny Diner. "I still want a real cheeseburger" she told me again. A "real" cheeseburger, according to her and she's right consist of the following. - Fresh ground beef, not overly worked but packed loosely. - The ability to have it cooked to your liking. This is a big one. - Cooked medium rare, leaning more to the rare side than the medium. - Cheese. Melty cheese. Glorious melty cheese. - Lettuce - Onions - Pickles - Soft fresh bun that is not bigger then the burger itself - Juicy enough that you need extra napkins. A bit of blood also counts. My last venture to take her to a quality burger place was still fresh in my mind and I did not want to replay that train wreck. I needed to prove myself and I knew that the Ankeny Diner would not disappoint. I was right. Ankeny diner is tucked away inside of the Wyndham Garden Center. We arrive around 2:30 in the afternoon. Walking down the hallway to the diner entrance, I breath in deeply, savoring the scent of chlorine coming off of the hotel pool. I love the smell of chlorine. We are seated immediately, given menus and ordered our drinks. Our waitress comes back with our drinks and takes our orders. She orders a burger, exactly as described above except she opted for swiss cheese. I ordered the rarebit. Both us went with the fries with a side on honey mustard for dipping. The burgers came fairly quick. I dug right into mine while she assembled hers. My burger was perfectly cooked. A nice crust on the outside and a glorious medium rare, more rare then medium on the inside. I kept my eye on her, hoping that this would prove to the burger to fulfill her burger dreams. When she finally picked it up brought it to her mouth and too her first bite, her eyes closed and a soft, low mmmmm came from her while juices ran down her chin, over her fingers and dripping onto the plate. "OMG that's it. That's exactly what I wanted" she gushed. In my opinion, Ankeny Diner has the best burgers in Des Moines and is vastly under appreciated.

Ankeny Diner is great local spot that I'm sure has lots of local regulars, but also pulls travelers from the hotel it's connected to and being off I35. My husband works nights, so we met here at 6:30am and were the first of the day so the service was excellent and very quick. They have a large menu with all the home style favorites. I got a breakfast sandwich and cinnamon roll, both were warm, great tasting, and good portion size. The prices were reasonable. The exterior is under construction right now and the parking lot has lots of equipment in it. The inside is decorated like a 50's diner with plenty of booths and tables for large groups. We will definitely be coming back and are ready to try some of their supper options!

Found the Ankeny Diner while on Yelp and this place was phenomenal. Located right next to our stellar Quality Inn hotel (not really), the Ankeny Diner is only a stone throw away. When we got there, it was a little misleading; the "Open" neon sign was off, the window blinds were all closed, and we thought we weren't getting dinner tonight. Pleasantly, the door was open, and you go down a long hallway. Hang a left, where there is a blue neon sign, that leads to another door. There's a giant gum-ball machine in front, near the register and a vintage Coke machine on the right. The place has a lot of character. In regards to their menu, they have a huge variety of foods, you would expect from a diner. They have of course breakfast items like french toast, pancakes, and waffles, to name a few, to sandwiches, pastas, salads, shakes/malts, and hamburgers. I got the grilled blackened chicken, which was a chicken breast patty, a small roll, and steam veggies. The chicken breast was topped with cheese and the order came with a side, which I picked fries. The chicken was cooked well, not too dry, and was seasoned really good. Overall, delicious. The fam loved their food too. My oldest got the grilled cheese burger, which were two grilled cheeses, sandwiching a meat patty, with thousand island sauce on the side. It was probably one of the best burger/sandwich I had. The bread was nice and buttery and the meat was cooked to a perfect "medium". Phenomenal. Waitstaff was great, especially considering that they seemed to be short-staffed, but everyone was patient and kind. A really great dining experience!

The only thing bolstering the ranking is the cookies at the end, but skip the ice cream. Service was just ok. The biggest standout was it taking forever to get the check when clearly finished. I had the Old Fashioned with brown sugar, orange bitters, angostura bitters, and bourbon. It's pretty sweet and smooth Old Fashioned. Very nice start and enjoyable. Decided on the CFD Burger, a double smash with American Cheese, Shaved Onion, Pickles, and Clyde's Burger Sauce. I really like the shaved onion and it gave the beef a really nice flavor. First bites were very good, but the bun became too much and the sauce in the middle too heavy. Became hard to finish. I had to ditch some bun and would get the sauce on the side. Not terrible, just not my jam. I would get the sauce on the side or try ketchup/ mustard instead. The bun is just really thick and heavy. Just not a good ratio. The fries were just ok for me and not exciting. This restaurant also has the 3% fee if you use a credit card. I checked the receipt and gave a hundred dollars and asked for change. I included a picture of the receipt. I got thirty in cash back, 5 singles, a 5, and 2 tens. I am ok with not giving the change of coins, but rounding it up and keeping the 3% fee made me feel like integrity has went down hill. Yes it's less than 5 dollars and I know the haters will say what's the big deal. Well it's a neat way to make extra cash at the customers expense. They don't remove the fee and they keep a few dollars. That's not an accident and it feels like theft. I had left $12 for the tip, but after a review I left 10% due to dishonest customer service. What's the point of paying cash on these if you still get charged? Some have said it's leftover from the Covid Days. How many restaurants are doing a 3% fee? Yes, I know it's supposed to cover the CC fee, but it is obviously not if you are paying cash. This just feels really crooked and wrong. Yes it is a very small amount, just over $4, but if you do that how many times, how many days, over a year it definitely adds up. Not sure I would go back. No I didn't talk to a manager or anyone. I had a show to catch and wasn't going to ruin a night over a fee and be late. Just be aware of the fees when paying cash. Really feel the 3% fee just makes restaurants look bad and provides more problems than it solves. Why not add a 6% fee for lights and gas next?

I've driven by Bailey's many times and haven't stopped in. Not sure why...just haven't. I had no idea there is a pretty large gravel parking lot that sits behind the building. Parking isn't an issue even on a Sunday morning when it's apparently REALLY popular. Lol We walked in at about 1000 AM or so. Subtly lit neighborhood bar and grill. It's seat yourself and they come to your table to take your order. My best guess is that when they aren't swamped your bill is presented to you at the table and the payment is done there (cash and cards). Today if was easier for me to walk up and take care of it at the bar. Not an issues for me. When you can only see one staff member taking orders and one other one clearing tables...you have to choose to be a little patient and flexible. Seating is mostly low top tables and chairs. The bar and bar stools. And one booth maybe...unless my eyes were playing tricks on me. We grabbed a low top table and were approached within a few minutes. There were only two open tables when we walked in. Our server was either a manager or maybe the owner...and the bartender. She welcomed us to "her organized chaos." She did a fantastic job considering the place was packed. How does that old saying go...? Busier than a one legged man at a butt kicking contest? After we got our drinks (fountain Pepsi products) she stopped back in a few minutes for our order. I ordered the everything omelet with white toast and a half order of biscuits and gravy. My son ordered two pancakes and two eggs sunny side up. $31 and change before tip. When my son ordered two pancakes she let us know they were as big as dinner plates...and if he finished both she just might put him up on her wall. He's 15 but not little. He's a starting DE for Valley's Sophomore football team. He'd actually considered ordering three and no eggs before she got to our table and had backed it down to two since he had practice later today. It was a short wait for our food. The cook must be back there hammering out orders like a mad man... It took a couple of trips for everything to hit the table but it was hot and fresh. The plate with the biscuits and gravy was super hot... My omelet and hashbrowns were great. I forgot to ask if I could get the hashbrowns extra crispy so they were a little bit less cooked than I normally like, but that's on me. Those biscuits and gravy... Wow! I'd compare them to the gravy I got at East Side Eddie's a couple of weeks ago... Same great caliber! Not the standard white country stuff Cracker Barrel or other vanilla places that get it from Sysco serve... One that is seasoned and where the sausage is cooked in...not just thrown in as an afterthought. Next time... Even though everything was good...I'd probably order a full order of the biscuits and gravy or the hashbrowns with gravy. And to be fully transparent... There was plenty of that magical goodness so I made my own with what I had. I scooped the gravy off that plate on to my hashbrowns. Thanks to my toast I didn't leave a bit of it on either dish. So good! My son pointed something out to me that made us both laugh... "Hey dad. I think they cooked my pancakes right after (or with) your hashbrowns." If you look close at the picture you can see a few potato shreds sticking out of the edge of his pancakes. It didn't slow him down. He finished both and his eggs. The first one was a normal pancake, but that second one was so thick... He compared it to the size of a regular sheet cake. It had a rise on one side that was probably two inches tall. He was glad he didn't go for three. Lol I have been continually impressed with the breakfasts you can find at our neighborhood bar and grills and Bailey's is no exception! Great food in a basic no frills atmosphere. The crowd was lively and fun...even on a Sunday morning. Definitely a lot of regulars, but we were treated with the same hospitality as everyone else. If you haven't stopped in before maybe think about popping in and showing Bailey's some love!
