I ordered the breakfast rarebit, and it always hits the spot. It's flavorful and comes with plenty of food, so you definitely won't leave hungry. My wife ordered the breakfast pizza. I thought it was just okay, but she really enjoyed it, so that's what matters! We always like to try a unique place to eat if we can find one as we are traveling. Since we were already planning an evening meal in Omaha at the end of the day it made sense to start out with a breakfast in Des Moines. based on reviews in Yelp we chose Mullets. Mostly because it sounded really cool to see the pictures of mullets that decorate the restaurant. I didn't think of the fish called a mullet, but they have creatively used both the Fish and the hairstyle to create a fun logo. I loved the poster of all of the presidents of the United States wearing mullets that was in the entry vestibule. My husband had the Burt Ends Benedict. It was delicious, with generous sized chunks of meat in BBQ sauce under the poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. I had the Country Fried Steak breakfast with hash browns and hard scrambled eggs. Everything on my plate was perfect and delicious. The gravy was outstanding! Probably the best restaurant gravy I've ever had. On my next visit I'm planning to order the same thing, but I'll request gravy on the eggs and potatoes as well. We shared an order of cinnamon roll pancakes. They were delicious, and super sweet. I recently became pescatarian and finding things I can eat when out with friends can be difficult. I was excited to see that they had a veggie burrito on the menu. I was less excited when the burrito came and the waitress said "I have a... sad burrito.. sorry" It was small, had no seasoning, and didn't come with a side because the burrito that comes with meat is big enough to not need one but the veggie one is super small, barley making it a meal. I was so hungry that I ate it and didn't want to make a big deal about it to the waitress that was doing her best. My friends got fun waffles and scrambles but I was looking for something with no meat and protein. Do not judge a "hole in the wall" close to the ball park by the exterior or interior because the food at Mullets on SE 1st in Des Moines was the real deal. The biscuits were handmade and the gravy had small balls of sausage in real stove top gravy not from a jar. The bacon fried tender and fresh. The Chef did a wonderful job. Found this place while looking for breakfast places at 1130 am on a Saturday, the good reviews and exotic menu caught my eye! Omg this place was the bomb, I ordered the tres leches Belgian waffle that came with scrambled eggs and bacon all which was cooked to perfection! Also ordered a loaded bloody Mary which was delicious as well! I had the pork tenderloin sandwich and coleslaw, it was FANTASTIC! My niece had the Tres Leches Belgian waffles, I had a couple bites and they were DELICIOUS! I miss Midwest cooking, I was born and raised in Iowa but now live in California, my niece found Mullets on Yelp and I'm so glad she did as the food was AMAZING, service was great, atmosphere was nice. Ran a napkin across table and I'm still grossed out. Avocado toast flight was cold. Like out of the refrigerator cold. One part had an egg, it was the only thing luke warm. Not sure if it's an Iowa thing but if you plan on getting dinner plan on being at the restaurant for 2 plus hours. With that being said, if you don't mind your food room temp then I'd give this place a shot. The waitress wasn't the issue it was definitely the lack of waiters, she was very nice but even she claimed that she could only do so much to work all these tables. The food on the other hand...probably could've been pretty good if I was drunk enough but unfortunately I wasn't and the food was good enough to be served at a public golf course. This is a charming place that gives a good hometown vibe with excellent service and the food follows suit delicious breakfast. We shared three different kinds of Benedict. **Vegan review** I really appreciate the vegan menu items. I tried the vegan steak and eggs. It was ok but kinda dry. I feel like it needed a sauce or v gravy. I also feel it wasn't worth $20. I had a party planned directly with the owner and went over every detail in advance. Two days before the event, he suddenly tried to add a $3,000 charge--after explicitly telling me there would be no rental fee since the party was outside of their business hours. I explained from the beginning that I planned to pay for the food and have guests purchase their own drinks at the bar. We had 30 people confirmed, and when he quoted the price for "appetizers," it came out to an outrageous $100 per person. He refused to work with me on the cost, then turned around and accused me of saying more people were coming--even though he was the one who asked for the headcount today. There was zero effort on his part to problem-solve or be reasonable. Instead, he told me he was "fine" with me finding a new venue--two days before my mom's surprise 70th birthday party. Completely unprofessional, stressful, and disappointing. I would not recommend planning an event here. read more

The burnt ends were a bit dry and the dish was sweeter than expected. Overall, I enjoyed it but would probably not order it again. In most other places the half order of biscuits and gravy are enough for the two of us to split, however, here is was a smaller than average serving with a rather flat biscuit.
