I thought it was just okay, but she really enjoyed it, so that's what matters! We always like to try a unique place to eat if we can find one as we are traveling. Since we were already planning an evening meal in Omaha at the end of the day it made sense to start out with a breakfast in Des Moines. based on reviews in Yelp we chose Mullets. Mostly because it sounded really cool to see the pictures of mullets that decorate the restaurant. I didn't think of the fish called a mullet, but they have creatively used both the Fish and the hairstyle to create a fun logo. I loved the poster of all of the presidents of the United States wearing mullets that was in the entry vestibule. My husband had the Burt Ends Benedict. It was delicious, with generous sized chunks of meat in BBQ sauce under the poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. I had the Country Fried Steak breakfast with hash browns and hard scrambled eggs. Everything on my plate was perfect and delicious. The gravy was outstanding! Probably the best restaurant gravy I've ever had. On my next visit I'm planning to order the same thing, but I'll request gravy on the eggs and potatoes as well. We shared an order of cinnamon roll pancakes. They were delicious, and super sweet. I recently became pescatarian and finding things I can eat when out with friends can be difficult. I was excited to see that they had a veggie burrito on the menu. I was less excited when the burrito came and the waitress said "I have a... sad burrito.. sorry" It was small, had no seasoning, and didn't come with a side because the burrito that comes with meat is big enough to not need one but the veggie one is super small, barley making it a meal. I was so hungry that I ate it and didn't want to make a big deal about it to the waitress that was doing her best. My friends got fun waffles and scrambles but I was looking for something with no meat and protein. Beware of the upcharging wait staff! Bringing more liquor than you asked for and didn't even order, and getting charged for all they brought but shouldn't have! Telling customers there's only one size of onion rings when you requested a half order, and I even showed them the entry in the menu, but we got the larger portion brought to the table anyway and you guessed, got charged for the full order. Asked for cheese curds to be subbed into a children's meal, but we were brought 2 full orders of those because an adult raised a question about curds to the spouse & wait staff took it as an order & added to the check! & charged full order price twice. And a 9" cheese pizza was ordered for a child and that's the biggest 9" pizza I'd ever seen. And I bet we were charged for a 12" pizza. They make their own potato salad, it's a bit different and I suppose the state law won't allow hard cooked eggs and onions to be used in any salad recipe any longer My husband paid the check but I caught hell in the car afterwards because the bill was $200.00 for 4 adults & two very young children. A burnt end sandwich, a Reuben, order of wings, appetizers as mentioned above, only two adults had bar drinks. The burnt ends sandwich had hunks of fat that had not melted out and a few bites were tougher & worse than shoe leather. The trio of girls at the hostess desk could learn from some customer service lessons. I'm over retirement age and HELL NO I DON'T WANT TO SIT AT A HIGH TOP TABLE @ 5:05 PM and you can see all the way through the restaurant and out the back windows there were so few patrons in the place yet. It was loud, Loud LOUD. One of those exposed vents & pipes kinds places in the ceiling and concrete floor joints you can't hear yourself think, let lone converse with the folks you're with. GET ME OUTTA HERE! And I'm NEVER COMING BACK SO YOU CAN RIP US OFF AGAIN. The food wasn't that good nor did it outshine any other place in the metro. You can open more locations, just stay out of my hometown and we will head back to better favorites! Maybe the waitstaff has trouble hearing from working a prior location too many years without hearing protection. I should give OSHA a phone call. Not sure if it's an Iowa thing but if you plan on getting dinner plan on being at the restaurant for 2 plus hours. With that being said, if you don't mind your food room temp then I'd give this place a shot. The waitress wasn't the issue it was definitely the lack of waiters, she was very nice but even she claimed that she could only do so much to work all these tables. The food on the other hand...probably could've been pretty good if I was drunk enough but unfortunately I wasn't and the food was good enough to be served at a public golf course. I had a party planned directly with the owner and went over every detail in advance. Two days before the event, he suddenly tried to add a $3,000 charge--after explicitly telling me there would be no rental fee since the party was outside of their business hours. I explained from the beginning that I planned to pay for the food and have guests purchase their own drinks at the bar. We had 30 people confirmed, and when he quoted the price for "appetizers," it came out to an outrageous $100 per person. He refused to work with me on the cost, then turned around and accused me of saying more people were coming--even though he was the one who asked for the headcount today. There was zero effort on his part to problem-solve or be reasonable. Instead, he told me he was "fine" with me finding a new venue--two days before my mom's surprise 70th birthday party. Completely unprofessional, stressful, and disappointing. I would not recommend planning an event here. read more
