Damn, I've never found a Mullet to be so damn satisfying. It's no frills, you know? (Towny bar vibes.) But like... does the job. (Open on the daily at either 7 or 8am.) Not taking itself too seriously, while seriously offering up all the things. (UH, hello bloody Mary, mimosa and avo toast flights-- I see you.) It's all business (with reasonable pricing, offerings, and professional staff), while also being a party in the back (with patios galore! Even a rooftop). Mullets is a local treasure and I will be back. We spent a long weekend in DSM and popped in on a Friday morning at around 930 with the kids -- it was freaking packed. I had the OG Mimosa Flight (no complaints) and the Avocado Toast Flight. (My favorites on it were the bruschetta and the salmon. I'd def recommend this dish for any avo-toast-loving millennial, but also as a breakfast appetizer for a group!) I'd consider this spot very kid friendly in the morning-- the restaurant had PBS on randomly (FTW). I'll start by saying it had been a minute since my last visit to Mullet's and I suggested it to family as a brunch location based on the location and atmosphere on a gorgeous Sunday. I'd also heard they had the 'best waffles in Iowa'. The atmosphere was still what I remembered - despite the rather aggressive flies inside - and our server was a rockstar. Unfortunately, the food or at least ours was photogenic albeit far from a home run. I would 100% pass on the chicken and waffles (sigh) and the cute Bloody Mary flight in the future. My husband declared the bloodies to all taste 'basically the same' and he's NOT picky. My MIL enjoyed the nachos and avocado toast flight but noted one of the toasts tasted weird and she pawned it off on my husband in exchange for more nachos. So, brunch at Mullet's? Go for the atmosphere, maybe stay for more drinks? Also, Mullet's, what does a girl have to do for a tropical version of the mimosa flight (mango, passion fruit, pineapple, etc)? The place is kind of weird. Looks like a fish market from the outside inside. Looks like it a Lake bar. The food is like a brunch place. Service was friendly but they where goofing off a little so it was kind of slow. Only been there once and seems like one of the places that are hit and miss. Overall, we got food and it was fine to eat. For us, though, personally it was too greasy. We got the breakfast tacos and cordon bleu omelet. There was also an unusual instance where they could only do scrambled eggs for 30 minutes. The staff were confused as we were too. Anyways, with improvements it could be ok. Came by today to have some lunch with my mom friend and our babies. Absolutely loved my gluten free BLT sandwich with turkey and hashbrowns on the side. My baby even enjoyed the hashbrowns as much as I did. Food was delicious but the service was not the friendliest. Our server was nice just kind of rushed us towards the end and wouldn't really take the time to see if we needed anything. She would swing by super fast to see what we needed and leave. Also not very accommodating seeing I was struggling with my baby car seat to sit down with. Don't know that I will necessarily recommend to everyone. Maybe my friends who don't have kids will enjoy it better. Has a cool bar where the drinks all looked delicious. If I do come back I'll definitely order takeout or sit at the bar for a quick brunch. read more

No joke that this is a popular breakfast spot. Check in on Yelp ahead of leaving your house. We still had to wait another 20 mins for a seat. The building is small, with lots of outdoor seating and bike racks. The two story outdoor deck looked like a great place to hangout, if it wasn't raining this morning. We were seated at a small table that was crowded with condiments and napkin dispenser. We had a hard time choosing, as everything looked so good. I ended up with an order of the catfish fingers and cup of soup. Fresh hot and so good. There was quite an extensive list of beer available, and plenty of customers partaking, so the place was loud with a lot of profanities flying around. I do wish this place was closer. WIN 296! I defeated the Pigs in a Blanket breakfast challenge at Mullets in Des Moines, Iowa. I had 1 hour to devour four massive sweet cream pancakes, stacked & layered with 1.5 pounds of hickory BBQ pulled pork. It was then topped with 6 sunny-side up eggs. I finished in the new record time of 27:24. For winning, I received the $39.99 meal for free, a tshirt, a hat, & the second spot on the wall of fame! This place is a whole vibe! It had a good amount of people at an off time when we came. This is our first time and all the food was great. My father in law has been 3 times and has enjoyed it every time. They have a variety of food and drinks to choose from that will make sure you get whatever you're feeling like. Ok, so I would like to actually give 2 1/2 stars, but that's not an option apparently. So, we were a table of 6 for breakfast. 4 of us were leaving town to come back to St.Louis and the other two, were heading to work right after. Place was not crowded at all. We were seated at a pretty small table for 6 ( we had to move the napkin container, (which was sticky gross) and condiments to the next table for space) but we made it work. Our waitress was adorable, but had apparently been away at school and forgot the gist of waitressing. We had to ask for everything, utensils, creamer, sugar etc. I asked for eggs Benedict, substituting salmon, for the Canadian ham, it came with both on it and was pretty bland. The hash browns that came with it were pretty good. My brother in law really liked his chicken and waffles. I'm hoping we were just there on an "off day". read more

The first time eating there was an A-. The second time was a big fail. The initial young lady who sat us was rude and very hostile. Horrible service by the waitress the entire time, my Rarebit Fraffle had cement hard waffles on both side and could barely be cut, and the Hollandaise sauce was tasteless. The avocado toast flight was awful - the toast wasnt even toasted. Our waitress hardly ever checked on us, and at one point I had to go to the bar and get our drinks we ordered. We sat by the kitchen, and you could see the wait staff congregating there, and doing nothing. Won't be going back, unfortunately. read more

After scoping out the farmers market on a Saturday morning we discussed grabbing some breakfast. I had heard good things about Mullets breakfast and we went I had scoped out the menu before hand to make sure it could accommodate everyone's dietary needs. Its a go! The place was busy. Parking lot full, parked across the street. Luckily caught a booth right away as a group of 4. A great waitress was quick to serve us in this crazy atmosphere. Its tight in there near the bar but she did a great job. We all got different meals. Two of our people got sea food in their breakfast. What a unique combo to have in your omelet. I snuck bites off of both of them and they were good. Different but good. The salmon with eggs is a unique treat. We all left full and happy. Cant forget to mention the mimosa and big ol bloody Mary to start off your Saturday morning. read more

Never have I experienced such horrible service, waited 1hr. 20 minutes for an order that was never delivered, after asking the waitress what the delay was, she said they were running behind in the kitchen. Mullets is always a great place to visit if you're near downtown Des Moines! It's one of my favorite places to unwind and enjoy a drink or two. I've always been able to try new beverages when I come here and have found some pretty great new drinks that I'd have never tried before. The food here is very good and I'm always looking forward to their new specials they post on Facebook. I must say that some of them look absolutely amazing and those I've been able to try have been wonderful! The staff here is always nice and at times the place can be packed! Note breakfast is not served all day -- but there are some breakfast items which are and identified on menu that are. Fried pickle chips - deep fried dill pickles were crispy and cornmeal type better. Served with ranch. Sweet potato tots - either can order sweet or savory style. We got the sweet with marshmallow dipping sauce. I usually don't order sweet potatoes but this was delicious. Pulling up to mullets you see the big fish and outdoor recreation area. The front door is a bit hard to find as we sillily walked around the building. Going in you see all the picture of mullets and it's hilarious. We were sat quickly and waited on. Our waitress was very sweet. The food was ok we weren't as impressed by the food.
