Friday Night At the Angry Gold Fish This is usually a solid place to get a burger, but came up short. We arrived around 7:30 and it was busy. I asked for the corner table which was large and there were two of us. I chose it because it was quiet and it was so loud. The waitress seamed super annoyed. I am deaf in one ear and this was the best place so I could hear and actually enjoy the place. I didn't feel her attitude was justified. If she would have kept pushing the point it was going to get pushed to the manager as I have several disabilities and I don't use them, but I do choose certain places to sit to help manage them. My expectation is for the waitress to be kind and shouldn't matter if it's two people, four people, or six people. Should be glad to have a customer and business. My wife and I got a Knob Creek on the rocks to start off. We also each got the old fashion, one with tots and one with fries. The burgers have really good flavor, but wasn't even hot. The bun was super dry and I wound up leaving the bun and eating the burger. The tots were really good, but also not hot. My wife's was the same. The French fries were good, but not hot. I didn't say anything to the waitress because based on her attitude it was just going to make the night worse and I was out to have a nice evening. I have been here several times and this is my first bad experience here and I hope it's not a sign that the restaurant is going downhill. This is one of my go to spots in Des Moines to get a great burger and it should be fire on a Friday night. The Angry Goldfish is a fantastic bar/restaurant for families and adults. The room was packed with people of all ages. This dive bar looking building on the side of the road offers so much. The room is spacious with several seating options. The decor is rustic and cute. Our server was incredibly sweet. He greeted us right away and seated us in a larger booth so we wouldn't have to wait. He was friendly and attentive. My friend loved her Peanut Butter & Jelly Burger. I really enjoyed my Classic Smash Burger. The Pretzel appetizer was great too!! Well your yelp page and Apple Maps state dogs are welcome, yet our first and last experience here was started with "We don't allow dogs on the patio but we'll allow it this time", and said something along the lines that there's a new ordinance in south Des Moines that doesn't allow dogs on their patio, which is a total lie. Then followed with the busboy checking on us every 5 minutes, but not checking on the tables around us, which made us feel super rushed and unwelcome. Hadn't been here in a while, so we went back to see if it was still as good as when we'd been before, and we weren't dissapointed! Got in around 5:30 and got a table right away--the patio was more than half full and inside was a bit less than half full. Our server got our drink orders right away and they arrived quicky and we ordered our food. After a few sips of our drinks our food came out -- super fast turnaround! I got the tenderloin - a nice little additional flavor vs. the standard fare you'd get other places, and a perfect sized piece of pork - not super thin, but not pork chop thick. My wife for the pulled pork sandwich (I guess pork was our theme!). It was also very tasty, with zingy cole slaw and a mound of delicously sauced pork. Our server checked in very regularly and was pleasant and efficient. There was a busser clearing tables that checked in regularly too and took what she could each time. There is a continuing trend among restaurants in the Des Moines area called "shove as much flavorless meat on this thing as possible and charge a $15 minimum". If I go to a restaurant and I'm paying that much money, I expect the food to be seasoned! This is not only a problem at the Angry Goldfish, but at so many restaurants right now. When charging the prices these restaurants do, I think they have a duty to make the food taste good! I wonder sometimes if the people making it or management ever tries the food. If I can go to a place like Lachelle's and get the best burger within 300 mile radius for $14 with a side and sauce, why spend my money anywhere else? What a great way to end our Des Moines trip! We stopped here for lunch on a recent Sunday as they were on my list of having a really good pork tenderloin. The parking lot is pretty small but thankfully there was one spot left! Once you enter, you definitely feel some sort of comfort with the restaurant being very charismatic in its own way. It definitely makes me think of the word "dive" and that's what makes it so great! We ordered an appetizer of their Sriracha seasoned Angry Goldfish, the Goldfish Tenderloin, a Merlot Mushroom Burger (sub a veggie patty), and a local beer. This was seriously such a delicious lunch! The Goldfish were so much better with a spicy seasoning. The pork tenderloin was not just super thin and wide, but was a pretty thick pork patty, coated in a heavenly breading. The fries were seasoned perfectly. The veggie burger was perfect and not too heavy. This really is a great restaurant and one of our favorites from the weekend.
