This hotel and restaurant was such a pleasant surprise. We were given a gift certificate as a thank you from a special work assignment and from the website didn't expect anything as lovely as this. We had dinner during their prime rib special night and this was a fantastic meal! The meat was thick and cooked perfectly. The salad was quite nice and the service was fast and friendly. The décor is richly appointed with dark wood and a railroad theme. Very nicely done. The booths were deep and comfortable too. Brought my mom here for their Mother's Day brunch/lunch. Waitress was friendly and attentive. Food selection was limited to a few breakfast and a few lunch items as well as dessert. Mom's received a complimentary mimosa. I went with the steak Diane for lunch and my mom had the pan seared salmon with lobster Oscar. Both meals were delicious. The desserts were even better. I had the lemon cheesecake and she had the chocolate truffle cake with vanilla bean ice cream. Overall, food was good and high class. Definitely a must try when you're in the area. read more

I ate at Harveys at it's previous location. I had been out bow hunting and was not dressed nicely and the location looked informal. The food however, frankly blew me away. I don't remember what I had but I remember missing it. Fast forward to our first stop at it's new (not brand new but our first time going there). The location is great. Again, I was dressed for outdoors but they treated me with complete kindness and down to earth conversation even though others in the restaurant were dressed up. At this location you could dress nicely and have a nice night out. Looked and the menu and remembered that their mac and cheese is the best I have ever had. Ever. Anywhere. I dont order mac and cheese but my parner does often so I have tried it often. I must say most mac and cheese is boring and flavorless and just well, I stop eating out of tastebud boredom. Not so with this mac and cheese. I would stab someone with my fork while using another fork to get to this dish. We ordered a mix of appetizers and way over-ordered. The servings are good sized and priced well. I want to eat here often. My favorite was the cauliflower buffalo wings. Dont even read the description. It is the best. It may not sound good to you but you will be wrong. The description cannot possibly do this justice. I cannot write a description to do it justice. If homemade alfredo sauce married hotsauce and then their baby went to France to culinary school and ate all the delicious cheese and then made this appetizer you may be close. read more

We returned to David's while staying at the hotel and ate four meals this time, 2 breakfasts and two dinners. I had the Meatloaf, and the tenderloin sandwich for dinner time. And the Make your Own Omelet, and Breakfast Skillet, both of which were very tasty and filling. My wife had Chicken Parmigiana and the Strawberry Salad for dinner. At breakfast she had the pancakes on the first morning, and a heaping bowl of oatmeal on the last day. All food was served hot in the fabulous dining room, and the staff was wonderful and attentive. I love the decor of this place and will totally drink a beer here again but that's it. After becoming the duke on my second checkin I understood why people really don't come back. My first lunch here was delicious but took 1:15 to get a sandwich. I enjoyed the tenderloin sandwich. This time I had dinner and a beer at the bar. It took a while for anyone from the back to even notice I had arrived and come take my order. When I grabbed the menu they said sorry they switched from the happy hour menu but forgot to take them away. I ordered the fried chicken special and it came out nice and quick. I was very thankful that. Unfortunately I don't think the bed of mash potatoes were even reheated and while the outside of the chicken was hot and crispy the inside was white and fully cooked but ice cold. Grabbed another beer to kill a little time and did some people watching. The service I quietly observed was embarrassing and scary. The guys next to me order two appetizers. One of them wasn't available. The bartenders broke two wine corks even after someone returned a glass with lots of floating debris. Then I heard one server say to another that there was only a single paper wine menu for the entire restaurant. After that I watched the entire service team attempt to find a particular bottle of wine on the menu that someone had ordered. They couldn't find it so they poured different one and said to each other aloud "she won't know the difference". After that they tried to find the cork for another bottle by looking in the trash. Between food temperatures and blatant disrespect for the customers behind their back I think I'm done here. Bottled beer and things that are safe is the plan. read more

This is a beautiful building. Great atmosphere and beautiful decor. We went in because my dad wanted some of the onion rings. None of us were very hungry so we were just going to do a couple appetizers. We got the large order of onion rings. My step mom got the mac and cheese with grilled chicken, she said it was really good. My dad and I each got a salad to go with the onion rings. I ordered the wedge salad with ranch dressing. the Ranch is soooo very good. The onion ring platter was huge. The rings are thick with a lot of breading. I prefer the onion itself, so I left a lot of breading. It came with marinara that I did not try. Service was ok. It was tough to get a water refill. The food takes awhile to come out, but I think that is part of the atmosphere. I would like to go back sometime and try an entree. My parents frequent there regularly and like it. read more

I'm still sad Harvey's left redfield, I can no long walk to this amazing place. It maybe a good thing since I can't be tempted as often into some of the best desserts in the state. Harvey's is still definitely worth the drive, and has lost nothing in quality with this move. The menu is still amazing. The hotel offers a beautiful location for a restaurant that Harvey's fits right into. The staff is always great and it's so nice to run into the owner always making sure you are enjoying yourself. This is one of my favorite things about restaurants like this. They kept so much of the amazing menu (the killer mounds of Mac and cheese) from redfield and added some new favorites like the cauliflower wings. I look forward to going back to Perry more often just to visit Harvey's for dinner and desserts. read more

My family ate here while staying on the wonderful Hotel Pattee several weekends ago. We had Saturday night dinner and Sunday Morning breakfast. if you are in the area, it is worth the trip to Perry to experience something special. Dinner was exceptional. I had the roast with delicious vegetables and the perfect sauce. My wife had the pork chop. It was so good, she wouldn't offer me a bite. We ordered salads as appetizers and they were spot on. We were part of a large party who were splitting the check and the servers took care of everything admirably. Breakfast the following morning was very good and very reasonable. They have several unique dishes and everybody enjoyed their order. The menu is unique as they have several dishes catering to the biking crowd, with calorie counts tailored to various lengths of bike rides. We loved the art-deco/small-town vibe... the staff was friendly and the food was superb. We split the breakfast burrito, and it was incredible... I've never had a breakfast burrito with sausage gravy on top... but it perfectly complemented the soft flour tortilla, eggs, potatoes and some sort of white cheese. My husband ordered the Bloody Mary and rated it top five (from him, that's about the best rating one can get!) Save your time and money. The decor is excellent, and the hotel worth checking out. The food, service, and price in the dining room, not so much. I've been in the service industry for ten years, and have rarely experienced service so embarrasing. I had to hunt down the water pitcher and fill up my own glass, after waiting so long, going to the bar to find a water and drink refill, and overhearing everyone just chatting away in the kitchen (shouldn't you be out checking on the guests, making sure drinks are filled, and letting us know why are food is taking almost an hour?). The food took forever (and this was not the first time; I was hoping it was only a fluke the other times). Expect to wait at least 45 minutes, if not more, for a mediocre meal. Save your time and money. Check out the hotel and the bike trail, but stay away from Harvey's. read more

It's hard to believe that you could find such a gem in the middle of the Iowa praire. The restaurant and historic hotel it is located in are very quaint. The menu does not have a huge selection of items but it has enough options that anyone should be able to find something they like. The pancakes were great! One of the best I have had, and I'm pretty picky about my pancakes. The warm syrup is a nice touch. Adding sausage gravy to the skillet breakfast is a good choice if you like sausage gravy. Finally, the service was prompt and friendly. I would definitely recommend stopping by if you're in the area or anywhere close. read more

I don't remember what I got for dinner, so take what that means if it wasn't memorable. However, breakfast was VERY good. I'm SO happy that this beautiful hotel now has a matching Fantastic restaurant. We live in DesMoines and are happy to drive to Perry to eat here. Started with Lemon Drop martinis- it was the best one I've ever had!!! I had to have a second one. Everything on the menu looked good- honestly-everything! Started with their " Tots"- mashed potatoes with sweet corn and chives/ in large tot form ( deep fried) and served with a dipping sauce. Very tasty. Be sure and order the " hotel salad"- greens, frizze, dried cranberries, walnuts and a delicious, slightly sweet vinaigrette. SO good. I had the scallop cavatelli/ Alfredo sauce, penne pasta, perfectly cooked scallops. Oh my- so creamy and rich and Delicious. One person had the salmon- she cleaned her plate. The other one had the Cajun tortellini and the portion was big enough for a meal the next day. Took home the chocolate malt layer cake- it was Huge( I ate on it for 2 days) Very rich,decadent cake. One of the others took the cocoa cream pie home- the piece was so big it barely fit in the box( she loved it) The service great/ very attentive waitress, the bartender brought us our drinks. The restaurant itself is a work of Art as it the rest of this magnificent hotel. Definitely worth the trip and definitely going back to try some more menu items! read more

We enjoyed both dinner and breakfast at this restaurant located in the Hotel Pattee. The interior is all train themed with amazing art work and lots of wood details. My dinner was pretty good. I started with the onion rings which weren't anything special and a little too greasy for my taste. They did have a reasonable wine list with several good choices so we ended up buying a bottle. The salads were spring mix but I wasn't a fan of the ranch dressing. I had the parmesan chicken for my main course which was good but nothing special. The mashed potatoes and green beans could've used more spices or flavors to dress them up. The dessert menu looked interesting but we decided to skip it. I appreciated that the menu had prices ranging from $8 for a sandwich all the way to $20+ for steaks. For breakfast, the buffet on Sundays is large and $12.95/person. However, we ordered off of the regular menu. I had the fresh toast and a side of sausages while my companion had the farmers plate. He got a side of silver dollar panckaes for $1 that came with about 6 pancakes. Breakfast prices were extremely reasonable. read more

Truly remarkable meals and exceptional service. The Beer Clams and Mussels was a perfect starter and the grilled bread that came with was so much than we were expecting that we ordered more so that not a drop of that delicious broth went to waste. We had the Cherry Pork Chop and the Slow Braised Pot Roast for dinner and both were beautifully plated and incredibly delicious. The next morning I had the build your own omelet, and they allowed me to add items not listed such as spinach and shishito and jalopeno peppers. If I lived here, I would eat here every weekend. We ventured to the Hotel Pattee to celebrate our one year anniversary, and we chose this restaurant because of the reviews and the lack of other restaurants in the area. David's Milwaukee Diner was wonderful. It was exactly the quaint, unassuming restaurant that we wanted for our evening together. Luckily for us, David's had a prime rib special for 10 oz cuts of prime rib. I don't believe either of us could have put a dent in the 20 oz option on the menu. The prime rib was juicy, tender, and full of flavor. We strongly recommend it. The special came with green beans and a baked potato. The green beans were very fresh and delicious. We each opted for the Parmesan fries instead of the baked potato. The fries came with a generous dusting of Parmesan cheese, and we dipped them in ranch and blue cheese. Erica and I have become blue cheese and ranch connoisseur, respectively. But, I must say David's has the best blue cheese that I have ever had and it pairs perfectly with the prime rib. Creamy horseradish step aside and make way for the king! The blue cheese has thick chunks of blue cheese, but it's sublimely creamy. So delicious. If you are ever in Perry, Iowa, you must travel to David's Milwaukee Diner for the prime rib and blue cheese! read more

Came here for breakfast and was very satisfied. Great staff and great food. I got the biscuits and gravy. I highly recommend this if you up for the challenge of a a sizable meal. Food was prepared very well and exactly as ordered. Coffee was free flowing as well. We did have to wait a bit, but this likely had more to do with how busy it got right when we sat down. Everyone else at my table was highly satisfied as well. Omelette to order, eggs Benedict, and eggs with hash browns were all very good as well. Harvey's has remarkably good food! Our dining experiences there have been great all of the 10-12 times we have eaten there. This place is good enough people should drive from Ankeny and the west side of the Metro to enjoy a meal here. We have had the Salmon, the NY strip, the fillet, the fried chicken, the smoked pork chop, the bacon wrapped pork tenderloin, the chicken pot pie and thought they were all amazing. The maple glazed carrots are fantastic. My wife and I both love the house salad with apples and candied walnuts and apple dressing. We drive from Ankeny to our lake home in Panora and often go up through Perry so we can eat at Harvey's. Compared to what we pay at higher end Ankeny and Des Moines area restaurants, the prices at Harvey's are surprisingly low. We are thrilled to have a great restaurant again at the Hotel Pattee! read more

On Saturday May 9, 2015 my wife and I had an outstanding dinner at this restaurant. My end-cut blackened prime rib was simply delicious, and my wife's filet was perfectly prepared. The drinks were nourishing. The service was relaxed but attentive. The waitress made helpful suggestions. Jay Hartz (the owner) was also on site to make sure the experience met his high standards. The price was very reasonable for the value received. Although located 20-30 minutes from West Des Moines, it is well worth the trip. We will go more often. read more

We had a party of 24 for an event on Thursday. I ordered the filet with potatoes and asparagus. It was cooked right, but the meat was poor quality. It reminded me of the filet you get from Omaha Steaks. The au gratin potatoes were under heated from the microwave and the asparagus was way under cooked Everyone I spoke with in our group thought the food was terrible. I took my wife out for a Quiet dinner for the two of us. We live in the area and I wanted to try Harvey's since it was new. We went on Friday the 21st. We entered the hotel and the sign said wait to be seated. The time was around 7pm and the tables were half empty . We waited for 5 to 10 minutes before anyone bothered to ask if we wanted a table. We sat down and ordered drinks and the prime rib specials. I had my drink in 10 minutes but the dinner took another 45 minutes to arrive. The prime rib was cold and very tuff. In my opinion they smoked the meat to long or choked back the smoke flow. It was very bitter on top of being tuff and cold. The waitress then gives my 14 oz cut to my wife and the 10 oz cut to me. The waitress comes by half way through the meal and says did you get your salad and I say no. She said I will go get it, I ask her to just bring me the check. So she did 20 minutes later. No adjustment offered for not getting a salad and for the poor service and bad meal. I was really excited to try Harvey's. We need a good steak place in the area. To top the evening off, the restaurant was half empty and they chose to put a family with two young screaming children next to us. read more

I've not heard one good comment from locals regarding the service at Harvey's at the Hotel. These are the reasons I was reluctant to bring my friend to your establishment in the first place. Turns out I was correct. You had a good thing going in Redfield. Not sure why it's falling apart in Perry. Anyway, I wish you would have called me so I didn't have to post this online: I met an out of town friend at Harvey's at Hotel Pattee for brunch. We entered the restaurant around 9:30 a.m., and there was no one around. We looked at pictures on the wall in the bar for over 5 minutes, and I then went to the desk clerk, and she called for someone on the radio. We were finally seated, given our water, but then it was approximately 10 minutes before our server was back to take our order. Once the order was placed it took 45 minutes to get our food - and we were the only ones in restaurant! My eggs benedict was great. My friend ordered pancakes and bacon. The pancakes were very thick, under cooked, and gooey in the center, and her bacon was so salty it was inedible. We never saw the server again until she brought the check. No water refills. No "can I get you anything else"? No "is everything ok"? What could she possibly have been doing that was so important when we were, by that time, only one of two couples in the establishment??? What is more important than customer service??? When she brought the check my friend told her that the bacon was extraordinarily salty, and her answer was, "Yeah. People say that a lot." My friend thought I should make the owners aware of the problems we had during our visit. I didn't want to post this on a public site, as I would rather promote our local businesses than speak poorly of them. I have called the restaurant owner twice, and the manager hasn't returned either of my calls, so here it is for all the world to see. This isn't my first bad experience at Harvey's, so I was reluctant to return in the first place. My husband and I have been there twice and have been disappointed both times, but it was early on and I figured they had the wrinkles ironed out by now. This past summer my husband attended a meeting of the trustees from a Midwestern Iowa college. Again, he said it took forever for someone to take their order, and they waited almost an hour for their food. When the food finally arrived the server informed the two people who ordered French Dips that there was no beef for the sandwiches and asked what they would like to order instead. She waited THAT LONG to let them know! So the rest of the people ate, they had their meeting, and after the meeting the committee sat and watched the two people eat their lunch. Needless to say, not one of them was impressed. These are the reasons I was reluctant to bring my friend to your establishment in the first place. Turns out I was correct.
