Over the top. If you found this place in Chicago, Minneapolis you would would be thrilled. In small town Iowa it's a gem. Food and service as good as the best anywhere. Prices, cheap. Decor best in Midwest , No, best in U. S. . Long story how this came about but the city has stood proudly behind keeping it alive. We are lucky.

This hotel and restaurant was such a pleasant surprise. We were given a gift certificate as a thank you from a special work assignment and from the website didn't expect anything as lovely as this. We had dinner during their prime rib special night and this was a fantastic meal! The meat was thick and cooked perfectly. The salad was quite nice and the service was fast and friendly. The décor is richly appointed with dark wood and a railroad theme. Very nicely done. The booths were deep and comfortable too. I would recommend this hotel and restaurant to anybody looking to enjoy a special night out.

Brought my mom here for their Mother's Day brunch/lunch. Waitress was friendly and attentive. Food selection was limited to a few breakfast and a few lunch items as well as dessert. Mom's received a complimentary mimosa. I went with the steak Diane for lunch and my mom had the pan seared salmon with lobster Oscar. Both meals were delicious. The desserts were even better. I had the lemon cheesecake and she had the chocolate truffle cake with vanilla bean ice cream. Overall, food was good and high class. Definitely a must try when you're in the area.

I ate at Harveys at it's previous location. I had been out bow hunting and was not dressed nicely and the location looked informal. The food however, frankly blew me away. I don't remember what I had but I remember missing it. Fast forward to our first stop at it's new (not brand new but our first time going there). The location is great. Again, I was dressed for outdoors but they treated me with complete kindness and down to earth conversation even though others in the restaurant were dressed up. At this location you could dress nicely and have a nice night out. Looked and the menu and remembered that their mac and cheese is the best I have ever had. Ever. Anywhere. I dont order mac and cheese but my parner does often so I have tried it often. I must say most mac and cheese is boring and flavorless and just well, I stop eating out of tastebud boredom. Not so with this mac and cheese. I would stab someone with my fork while using another fork to get to this dish. We ordered a mix of appetizers and way over-ordered. The servings are good sized and priced well. I want to eat here often. My favorite was the cauliflower buffalo wings. Dont even read the description. It is the best. It may not sound good to you but you will be wrong. The description cannot possibly do this justice. I cannot write a description to do it justice. If homemade alfredo sauce married hotsauce and then their baby went to France to culinary school and ate all the delicious cheese and then made this appetizer you may be close.

I love the decor of this place and will totally drink a beer here again but that's it. After becoming the duke on my second checkin I understood why people really don't come back. My first lunch here was delicious but took 1:15 to get a sandwich. I enjoyed the tenderloin sandwich. This time I had dinner and a beer at the bar. It took a while for anyone from the back to even notice I had arrived and come take my order. When I grabbed the menu they said sorry they switched from the happy hour menu but forgot to take them away. I ordered the fried chicken special and it came out nice and quick. I was very thankful that. Unfortunately I don't think the bed of mash potatoes were even reheated and while the outside of the chicken was hot and crispy the inside was white and fully cooked but ice cold. Grabbed another beer to kill a little time and did some people watching. The service I quietly observed was embarrassing and scary. The guys next to me order two appetizers. One of them wasn't available. The bartenders broke two wine corks even after someone returned a glass with lots of floating debris. Then I heard one server say to another that there was only a single paper wine menu for the entire restaurant. After that I watched the entire service team attempt to find a particular bottle of wine on the menu that someone had ordered. They couldn't find it so they poured different one and said to each other aloud "she won't know the difference". After that they tried to find the cork for another bottle by looking in the trash. Between food temperatures and blatant disrespect for the customers behind their back I think I'm done here. Bottled beer and things that are safe is the plan.

Great food surrounded by high art. Great midwestern menu (plus some seafood) and big city cocktails and excellent wines. Stopped here on an anniversary celebration night, stayed at the hotel Pattee and very much enjoyed dinner. Food was presented well and tasted beyond the price point. Quaint setting and local feel.

The breakfast skillet with toasted croutons, sausage, ham, and potatoes topped with the gravy couldn't have been more satisfying.

Few diners in America are designed to reflect the history of a place than this diner with its well crafted bas-relief, murals of the Perry station and trains, and a model train. This time, our breakfast was delicious and all the guests seemed pleased with their fare.

My family ate here while staying on the wonderful Hotel Pattee several weekends ago. We had Saturday night dinner and Sunday Morning breakfast. if you are in the area, it is worth the trip to Perry to experience something special. Dinner was exceptional. I had the roast with delicious vegetables and the perfect sauce. My wife had the pork chop. It was so good, she wouldn't offer me a bite. We ordered salads as appetizers and they were spot on. We were part of a large party who were splitting the check and the servers took care of everything admirably. Breakfast the following morning was very good and very reasonable. They have several unique dishes and everybody enjoyed their order. The menu is unique as they have several dishes catering to the biking crowd, with calorie counts tailored to various lengths of bike rides. The family which owns the hotel & restaurant does a great job my compliments go out to them for a wonderful weekend.

Added to this review below 08/21/25…read more My wife and I found the hangout Diner in the last part of July. We went there for breakfast and lunch. And chosen a variety of various Foods. Now rather than make a whole bunch of reviews I'm going to try to put a lot of the things that we got into one review so here goes. Biscuits and gravy the best around. You can get a half order or a full order. You can add an egg if you like which I did. I had chicken and waffles one time. It's not always on the menu but you have to call and ask first. But it was very very good. My wife has had a full breakfast by choosing eggs bacon hash browns and all the components separately. Christy and her mother Sharon are there most of the time. They cook and also waitress. They have pancake waffles French toast all the normal breakfast items. And the mix for the pancakes and waffles is homemade not from a bag. This time for breakfast I had a breakfast burrito and had them put everything inside but no green peppers. It was large and delicious. My wife has eaten a chicken Caesar salad which she said was a delicious. They do have daily specials and you might want to call before you go in and find out what their special is for the day. Not everything is on the menu but if you ask she possibly might be able to make it for you. Now for the sweet end of it they have sticky pecan rolls cinnamon rolls that have a glaze on them sometimes they have a variety of Danish rolls. They also have ice cream by the scoop or in a bowl. It's not soft serve with scooped ice cream. They have various types of of hamburgers. All in all it's worth going in and trying it and see what you think for yourself. I highly recommend it as you see I gave five stars to the food and the atmosphere . Oh yeah coffees only $2 a cup. 08/21/25 my wife and I went in for the special of the day today. I had homemade meatloaf, garden fresh green beans and mashed potatoes and gravy. Everything was delicious. My wife had the homemade stew and a chicken Caesar salad. I tasted the chicken off of the Caesar salad and it was seasoned beautifully.

Anyhow, we arrived and elected to sit at the bar versus a booth. Took a couple minutes to get noticed and we were asked to sit at the other end of the bar due to some clutter... Prices are very reasonable at this establishment. A flight was $7.50...if you were in WDM or Waukee, you would probably be looking at double that. They also brew their own beer and cider here; I'm not sure why that's not advertised heavier. Its called the "Gamble Block Brewery". I had Fear the Beard, the Baja Lager, the Maple Pumpkin Ale, and a cinnamon apple cider. The Maple pumpkin ale was delicious--the maple definitely hit on the back end. I was not a fan of the cider--they used a rather tart apple. The Fear the Beard (comparable to Blue Moon) and the Baja lager were OK. For food, I had the chicken tender basket with a 1/2 order of Texas Fries. I actually thought the ranch seasoning detracted from this dish--the queso was quite good and the bacon was plentiful. The downside to getting "sampler" versions of items was none of the accompaniments were included. My friend who got a full order of the Texas Fries was given sour cream with his food--mine did not. Also, on the beer sampler fruit wedges are served with the full size versions but not on the flight. The chicken tenders were very good and had the right breading/chicken ratio. The buffalo sauce packed a punch but was not obnoxiously spicy. The ranch that came with it was very good and was clearly made in-house. More of a 3.5 star review.

I fully expected the place to be packed as it appears to be pretty much the only show in town as far as a sit down restaurant. There was a please wait to be seated sign there as we walked in. We were greeted right away and seated in minutes. It's old school wood tables and chairs and I think there was a counter available. Ordering is done at the tables as well as settline your bill up with your server. Surprisingly the speed of service continued throughout the visit. After drinks we ordered the rodeo burger and fries, a tenderloin with chili cheese fries, and the garlic cheeseballs. The cheeseballs came with marinara and ranch. Fresh, hot, and fantastic! I've eaten a lot of tenderloins. Many that have been highlighted as Iowa Tenderloin Trail winners or participants... This is one of the better tenderloins I've had in the state! Obviously hand made, breaded, and fried. Not too thick and not too thin. Drained properly. Served with the essential condiments including the holy trinity (onions, dill pickles, and mustard). The gf liked her burger. It could have used more of the featured ranch and bbq sauce. The fries... Neither of us cared for them. Obviously hand made, but almost too thin and too greasy. We'd both opt for a different side next time. To each our own though. Almost every small town along this stretch of I-80 has a pub & grill. The menus vary a little, but are very similar in a lot of aspects. The quality of service and the cooks make the biggest differences. The Chuckwagon hit five stars in some aspects of both. Work on those fries and the flavor of the chili (horribly bland) and this review would have been five stars. I'm going to emphasize this again. Truly one of the best tenderloins I've had in the state! Keep doing what you are doing!

We ordered up a two and a three meat deal and had Campground Beans, Creamy Coleslaw, Cheesy Potatoes,, and Mac & Cheese as sides as well as a slice of Texas Toast and Cornbread as sides....oh, and Golden Corn Nuggets as an appetizer. The Corn Nuggets were good and sweet and served up with honey and a ranch sauce for dipping. The meat choices were 3) Ribs, Pork Loin, and Turkey Breast....and 2) Pork Loin and Turkey Breast. The smoke on everything was amazing and just the right amount for excellent flavors..the ribs were very meaty. Some places ribs leave you wanting but not at Watcha Smoking! The Pork Loin and the Turkey Breast were both very good as well...still tender and not dried out. I liked the Neck of the Woods sauce the best (mild tomato based) as well as the Carolina Gold sauce...it had nice kick to it. The sides were all good but the only issue was the Cheesy Potatoes were a bit dry.....I'm thinking that it must've been towards the end of the batch and had been sitting around for a bit. Cornbread was excellent, Texas Toast tops, Coleslaw was a good shredded, wet slaw, the Mac and Cheese very good, and the Campground Beans were the preferred side as they had some good chunks of smoked meats mixed in.
