Not a huge selection. The parking is a pain in the neck. But TOTALLY worth visiting and purchasing their baked goods! The selection isn't large, but they seem to select products that they do best, and taste the most wonderful. The chocolate chip cookies are near the best I've ever tasted, along with their snickerdoodle, and chocolate-chocolate chip cookies. The banana bread is amazing! Their brownies could convince me to change my religion. The pies are perfect. Everything tastes home-made, because in a way, everything IS home-made. The people who work here seem to want to be here. They give me the impression that they are here because it's a labor of love. I'm sure the bakers feel that way more than the kid at the register, but you know what I mean. The coffee is great, but they set the bar so high with the baked goods I can see why I'm being super-critical of its taste. I go to Able Baker regularly to pick up a supply for the house. It's healthy because eating Able Baker's baked goods is my impetus to work out with more than a bit more intensity, and more often. I've been sending emails to the Nobel Prize committee, trying to convince them to either create a new category, or make an exception to allow Able Baker to be included in another, less fitting category, in order for them to be nominated for a Nobel Prize. Came here to review the carrot cake. It's my mom's favorite type of cake so we've tried it from various places for her birthday over the years. Able Baker's is the best by far. No nuts, raisins, pineapple. Focused on the carrot and made with olive oil so it is incredibly moist. Icing tastes whipped, leans more towards the cream cheese flavor and not too sweet. read more

Utterly delightful, the Able Baker makes me glad to live in a town without a coffee retail chain. Its checkerboard floor tiles, cafe seating and fresh-baked goods make it much more than a caffeine stop, though it is that, too. The chalkboard menu and the cheery staff impart a small-town feel that's hard to replicate or beat, not to mention that it serves up some great coffee and scones while you walk up and down the length of Maplewood Avenue and shop the stores along it. On a recent trip there, I was served by an employee who appeared to be confused by a request to grind a pound of coffee beans, mentioning that she had to ask the supervisor, going to the back area, returning with unground beans, acting surprised that we wanted coffee beans ground, repeating that she had to ask a supervisor, disappearing for a moment into the back and returning yet again with unground beans. It does seem that grinding coffee beans would be a standard courtesy extended to customers, but maybe it's not? We went home with whole beans. First-world problems, I know, but it was a bit puzzling. Although weekends can get a bit crowded, tables turn over quickly enough that you can find a seat if you really want to. I was craving a cortado yesterday after a delicious lunch at Arturo's across the street, so I walked over to The Able Baker. So, I ordered 2 cortado's with the young gentleman at the counter, who went to get the barista. The barista comes over and tells me, they stopped serving cortado's and other espresso drinks because it was to late in the day. It was 1:30 pm. I gave her a look of disappointment and she just walked away without much empathy. Very disappointed. Especially since I've ordered espresso and cortados once before during the early afternoon hours here. read more

A gem of a bakery right smack in the Maplewood Village. Just a food for thought, if you're one of the train people, it might not be the place to get your coffee (which is also priced relatively more than other competitors in town) as the pace might frustrate you. The fact that they bake on premise adds such a dreamy sweet aroma when you walk in. Delicious baked goods everything from the scones to the zucchini bread-so so good. I had a decaf latte and was blown away at how fresh and satisfying it really was. Order way ahead for custom cakes. I did and the red velvet was incredible! Cute bakery/cafe in downtown maplewood. I only tried the gluten free items (banana bread, cranberry/orange bread, cheddar black pepper biscuit) and they were deeeelicous! You could honestly not even not tell they were GF because they were so moist. I also bought 12 cookies as a gift, didn't taste but they looked good & homemade. As always the cake was absolute delicious-perfectly moist, and sweet. The process of ordering the custom cake was super easy and smooth. I decided on an 8 inch cake with one extra layer (3 tall layers total) with a semi naked frosting finish. I ordered the cake 3 weeks in advance (minimum is 2 weeks) and reconfirmed the order was still on the night before. The place is very cute. They take great precautions to maintain social distancing and COVID prevention. This was my first time there and I was kinda upset that you can't decide what flavor cupcakes you want. They come pre-assorted and there are no substations allowed. Regardless I got the cupcakes, and they were hard and not tasteful. The icing was hard and sour tasting and the cupcake itself was also hard, thick, and very bland. Maybe their other items are better because the place had a great flow of people. It is unlikely that I will try it again though. Update: I was able to speak with the owner and she express the limitations posed by COVID that lead to my experience. She even took my experience to mind when reviewing her business model. This is the best bakery ever. They made the most adorable and delicious cookies for my daughter's bridal shower. I asked them to make cookies that would coordinate with the Mexican theme of the shower. They outdid themselves! The Pinatas and the Mexican wedding dresses were so beautiful, you almost didn't want to eat them! But you were glad when you did, they were very amazing - the perfect amount of sweetness balanced with a great cookie base. Julie, the owner, is great to work with and very accommodating.
