Tucked into a row of small local businesses (a rarity these days on LI, the land of huge strip malls with big box stores), sits Thai Station, a humble little restaurant that offers up a pretty big menu of Thai staples as well as some less easier to find dishes, like my favorite, Tao Hu Hor (bean curd sheet with spinach and mushrooms). What makes it even better? The nicest service that you can imagine. I know they have a huge takeout customer base, judging by the constant dings coming in through the computer and the restaurant was empty when my father and I walked in for a late lunch/early AF dinner (5:30 pm). I always prefer eating at a restaurant to takeout/delivery and although the space is pretty basic, it's well-decorated and comfortable. I didn't expect them to have alcohol, but they do have beer and wine, not a huge list or anything, and I wasn't drinking anyway, but nice to know. My dad got his favorite: massaman beef curry and I got the Tao Hu Hor. It came out quickly, which was good as I was on a time crunch and needed to get back to work. I knew as soon as I laid eyes on my food, it would be good and I was correct. Gorgeous little bundles of veggies smothered in black bean sauce, one of my favorite flavors and in addition to the bean curd skin that wraps around piles of spinach and mushrooms, there's also slices of bean curd, so this is a plant protein powerhouse dish. And absolutely delicious. My father almost lost his mind over how good the sauce is and I think he may consider ordering it in the future (he's a devout meat eater so this is unusual, heh). I'm so glad to have a new LI discovery. We'll be putting this on regular rotation when I'm in town. read more

Went for lunch with a new Yelpie friend. We had both been here before and enjoyed it. I love going during lunch as the small place doesn't fill up. Maybe a dozen tables are perfect here. I always think I know what I want to eat here, and by the time my mouth opens to order, something else comes out. I ordered hot tea, the seafood soup and the fried tofu. The soup was perfect for the first really cold day of the winter. It had a perfectly seasoned broth with vermicelli noodles, a giant shrimp, and some other seafood. So good! The fried tofu portion was huge and came with (I think) a thick peanut sauce. Whenever I wanted more hot water for my tea, the server quickly brought it to me. After we wrapped up our leftovers, we stayed in the restaurant with just the staff and talked for so long. The staff did not try to kick us out. This is my type of place. This is a small storefront restaurant that I think has a mostly takeout business. My friend who lives in Merrick and gets takeout from here recommended the food so we came in for a sit down dinner. Our server seemed a little distracted by her phone, but when she did come to the table, she was friendly. The food was good. I wouldn't say it was anything spectacular, but it was tasty. I wasn't particularly fond of the summer rolls. I've had better. The fried calamari was tasty. My entree, which was supposed to be beef over a bed of spinach, was actually beef mixed with spinach so I was a little disappointed in that - but it tasted good. For years I have enjoyed just about everything here. But I ordered myself a grilled steak tonight for $27. it was not what most folks around here would considered a grilled steak. it was thin, overcooked and tough. And it had a lot of gristle. Also, they cut lines into the steak (maybe to look like grill marks?). Idk, but the cuts let out whatever juice was left in the piece of meat. There were two pieces delivered, but my pic only shows one. Both were the same quality though. I didn't expect it to be Peter Lugers, but it was just not good tasting or chewable. I thought we'd give it a go again since so many people in the area love this place. But once again, it was not good. The papaya salad is really bad. The massaman curry was not massaman curry. It was like a lemongrass soup. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't massaman. The beef was mushy and chewy at the same time. The pad Thai was super smokey.. This food just isn't authentic Thai food. Parasitic Stomach Bug In New York Probed By CDC The CDC is probing a string of illnesses that can cause frequent and, at times, "explosive" bowel movements, stomach cramps and more.I have been very ill since I ate the food from Thai Station. That was June 6. today is June 24 and it is ongoing. We went to eat there but were told by the host that they were closing early and I had to order takeout, notwithstanding the menu said the restaurant was open for another hour and the website said 90 minutes. They were neither nice nor accommodating. But my child and I had to get some dinner to take home I ordered several things for my adult child and myself. There was one thing that was only for myself, two orders of Thai Summer Rolls, which essentially was a food wrap with veggies. The outside of it was icy, and the edges of the outside were hard. Part of the rolls felt like they had been stored uncovered on a bed of ice. Within a few hours, I was deathly ill, with terrible pain at the bottom right of my stomach. I was awake all night bent over in pain. After medicating with a laxative a half day later, because the pain was unbearable, I spent, every 7 or 8 min going to and from the restroom to try and go, still bent over in pain. I won't describe the next 24 hours to you which was brutal. I was so weak I had to get my electrolytes up. This went on for days. I ate very lightly. Ginger ale, jello, toast, etc. It took about 5 days to get better. On day 6 it started all over again. Regret that I was alone a good amount f the time because my husband has been working double shifts. I am still very ill. It comes for a few days and then goes away for a day or so and then starts again. My husband and I did some research and are quite sure it is salmonella. However today I read an article in the Patch, and it appears I am one of many and that the CDC is in investigating a stomach ailment resembling almost identically what I have had. This means it is very likely that this restaurant is not cleaning their hands or their produce properly and I recommend that you all beware if you are thinking of going there. I will be contacting the CDC or the local dept of Health in the next 24 hours now that this is being reported on. I am hoping for a definitive path forward, as I am still suffering from it. read more

Food travelled really well: - 77. crispy duck, good, but not as good this time, over cooked - some of the end pieces were leather. The basil sauce was good. A few pieces were salvageable. - 79. spicy basil beef - Tried this for the first time. Nice crisp peppers / veggies. Not too spicy at all. Most of the sliced beef pieces were tender. 35. Spicy chicken fried rice with basil. Tried this for the first time too. Phenomenal. Huge chunks of tender chicken and great flavor - nice touch of spice. Tried curry samosas too, they were great. Then all my regulars - Shrimp Pad Thai, chicken string beans and chicken eggplant. As a bonus, they put a second pad Thai in my bag. Definitely an error. Honestly a first for me ever - what do I do? We haven't ordered here in years, my holy crap has this place gone downhill--it was never great, but this is actively bad food. Canned mushrooms, food is drenched in disgustingly sweet sauce (and this was meant to be "spicy basil"), and just overall gross and disappointing food. I live a town over, i've never had an issue with getting delivery. today i ordered and the driver got angry with me and told me it wasn't "good for the food" to drive this far. it's a 15 minute ride. i called the restaurant and asked if they normally deliver to my town and was told no. Most of the food was good but the summer roll wrapper was hard, as if it was premade and the wrapper got hard. The wrapper was too hard so we couldn't even eat them. I brought them back to the restaurant to let them know and the 2 young women at the front could not be more rude! They said that's how they make it and said I didn't know Thai summer rolls. I've had plenty of summer rolls made with rice paper to know it's never supposed to be hard. No apology or acknowledgment of my bad experience. This is my sister's and my local place to grab some Thai takeout. We love to order the noodle dishes. My favorites are the pad see ew and the coconut noodles. I did eat here one day after picking up a friend from the LIRR near by and we notice that the place does get filled up for dinner. There is always the option of take out if it is crowded. This is my best friend's local Thai place and she's been waiting forever to bring me here and we finally got the chance to the other day. We were greeted and seated right away by our waitress. I haven't had Pad Thai in awhile so that was without a doubt what I wanted. I ordered the Shrimp Pad Thai and she got the Tofu Pad Thai. We also got the Chicken & Veggie Dumplings as an appetizer! Chicken & Veggie Dumplings: How could you go wrong with dumplings? The answer is that you can't go wrong. I always prefer fried over steamed but I was super okay with these. There was what I believe was these tiny pieces of fried onions which added a nice texture difference from the dumplings. The dipping sauce was really good as well! Pad Thai: Tasted great! Some of the better Pad Thai I have had. They give you a decent amount of shrimps along with plenty of chopped peanuts (wished it was EVEN more as I love my pad thai with peanuts). My only little criticism would be that I wished the lime wedge wasn't placed on the noodles as it gets warm and loses something for me. But when we asked for extra wedges, our waitress brought them out right away so it was all good! Next time I would definitely want my pad thai spicy! Another night at Thai Station and I probably will be back several other times since there is no other Thai restaurant. BUT I do find this restaurant a little pricey. Especially with the additional 3.95% charge for using a credit card. Find that annoying since most crust cards don't charge that much. I get it they have to make up for all the credit card users, but a little unfair. This unfortunately takes away from what is left for tip. Best Thai food around. Whether eating in or taking out- great menu, great food, great portions. My fiancé and I ALWAYS go for the spring rolls to start. We love the shrimp with clear noodle as well as the beef pad Thai. We've also gotten the pineapple coconut chicken fried rice, pad see yew, and shrimp with fresh noodle. Tried this place again last night because our original place was closed, and we just needed to get out of the rain. We saw a table by the window open up, so went inside and grabbed it. The food was great. The vegetable dumplings were fresh, and perfectly cooked. My wife had the shrimp pad Thai, a little mild, but still delicious. I had the mint fried rice with pineapple. I finished the entire thing. They still have the same lack of understanding of the goodwill a buy-back brings, but I've come to realize not every place/culture shares the same feelings. However, tonight's dinner came with a surprise - a 4% surcharge if you use a credit card. 4%? I'm all for every restaurant charging customers whatever the credit card companies charge them. Well within their right. Why should I pay the same as someone paying cash? Completely agree with the practice of charging a credit card customer more, or offering a discount for cash. But there are two problems: 1) Don't charge us more than the credit card companies charge you, and 2) Roll out this new policy correctly. This was one of the worst roll-outs I'd ever seen. No sign on the door, nothing on the menu, and a lot of surprised tables. Language has always been an issue at this location, so you can imagine some of the table conversations. A complete failure by management. And Visa/MasterCard charge about 2%, Amex 3%, why are you charging 4%? Terrible. My wife and I usually start at a base of 20% tip on the taxed total, and then add when service is above average, or there are buy-backs involved. But I'm getting tired of doing that in instances like this. So we took our $102 tab, which become over $106 after the surcharge and made the appropriate adjustments. The pre-tax total was $94. No buy-backs on eight glasses, so 15% of $94 was $14. Reduce it by the $4+ surcharge and we ended up at $10. I'm done with days of 20% for all, and building from there. If you're not going to buy-back a glass or two from your 1.5 liter bottle that cost you $6 total, we're dropping to 15%. read more

This is my go-to venue for Thai food in the Merrick area. I have ordered Spicy Coconut Noodles, Thai Pepper Steak, and Cashew Chicken. All three have been great. All of the dishes have an unique blend of flavors. Thus far, my favorite is the Spicy Coconut Noodles. If you have the capacity, then I highly recommend the Shao Mai Dumplings too.
