I like Thai and beg to differ with the reviews that say the food here isn't good. It is good! That being said I am giving four stars rather than five because the Thai fried rice lacked flavor unless you swallowed one of the large chucks of hot pepper. These were big chunks of hot pepper that included the seeds. The pad Thai tasted good and included fresh limes to squeeze. The noodles were smaller than I am used to but it was fine. I appreciated the cup of fresh cucumbers in vinegar on the side that was included. The patio ambiance by the creek is very nice if it isn't 108 outside like today. read more

We loved everything about our dinner tonight! We had outside seatIng next to the river with lush trees and shrubbery. Our waiter, Jake, was attentive and professional. He gave us some good recommendations, like the Scallops on special and the Bali margueritas. We had the calamari while we waited and it was excellent. really pretty ambience, anything along the creek is just so pretty naturally. the staff was sweet and the menu has a lot to accommodate gluten free, vegetarian, and other dietary restrictions. it seems like they were knowledgeable in their ingredients and accommodating people. room for improvement: spice scale is 1-4. they advised us to stick to a 2 and only asked some people at the table how spicy they want it. our party ended up heeding the waiters warning and wishing they had more heat to their food. the flavor was great though and did not need spice to be flavorful. chicken pad thai could use more meat. a $20+ plate of rice noodles should have a good amount of protein in it. could have been a fluke and the flavor was still lovely. lastly, they set silverware straight on the table here and was a little awkward with table service. again, the staff was so sweet but i could tell instantly that it was off putting to my elderly grandparents with real ingrained table manners. we would come again, especially because the upscale ambience makes it seems like a nice date spot and it's one of the few thai places open on Sundays. read more

The food was adequate, but nothing to rave about. I would not recommend this restaurant. Wait person didn't listen and brought me a dish I didn't order. When I told her, she argued saying it was what I ordered, because that's what she wrote down. When taking the wrong away she also grabbed the rice. I told her she could leave the rice and she told me no. Anyone can have a bad day, but this person was argumentative and belligerent over her simply mistake. Eat someplace else. We were spoilt for choice when it came to dinner options in Ashland, but we settled on one close to our hotel, Thai Pepper, after a review of several menus in the area. We are able to walk in and be seated immediately, despite not having a reservation, which was nice. Our table was out back on the patio, not far from the rail that overlooks the creek. Festoon lighting hanging overhead made for a cozy experience as the sun began to set. I'd settled on what I was going to order long before ever being seated: the Tiger Cries had all the right words attached to it: steak, onions, tomatoes, lime, garlic, peppers. I knew I was in for something great! My wife ordered the Yellow Country curry, with tofu instead of chicken, and our daughter went with the Spicy Lemongrass Soup. An order of Tiger Rolls was shared amongst all. The Tiger Rolls were ridiculously creamy, a little light on the crab, but otherwise excellent; I wish there'd been more than four! My wife enjoyed her Yellow Country, as she is a fan of curry more so than myself, and commented on the richness of its sauce, fresh veggies, and just enough spice to hit all the right notes. Our daughter made similar comments about her Spicy Lemongrass soup, enjoying the pleasant spiciness and the savory broth, although she was put off by the texture of the straw mushrooms, of which even my wife, a fervent mycophile, wasn't a fan. These could probably be substituted for a more celebrated mushroom (shiitake?) without compromising the integrity of the dish. I saved the best for last: the Tiger Cries! Although, I was the one nearly in tears, and not from spiciness (it's not), but from the utterly rapturous flavors! The flank steak was perfectly cooked to medium rare, and the sauteed onions and tomatoes were excellent as well, but the star of the dish was the Serrano-Garlic-Lime sauce. Holy hell, I could drink that stuff straight! A little heat, a little garlic, and a sharp twinge of lime by itself was already incredible, but elevated to nirvana when paired with the flank steak. I haven't had a steak experience as good as this since my last trip to Japan! My only gripe about the dish is that it ended too soon; the portion size could be a little larger, and I would be more than willing to pay more than the $21 asking price to accommodate such a request. Our server was elegant, articulate, had memorized all the specials down to minute details of the ingredients, offered suggestions and favorites from the menu, and another highlight of the experience. I wish I'd caught her name, to give praise to the manager on her behalf, but unfortunately I did not catch it. Known for its Shakespeare festival, I did not anticipate that our finest dining experience in Ashland would be at a Thai restaurant over, say, a British one, but this was a happy surprise, and one that I hope to revisit the next time we're in town. Until then, this Tiger will be crying until he can tear into another flank steak coated in that amazing sauce. read more

We went there for dinner and the food was absolutely delicious. They had many gluten free and vegetarian options for my sister and I, and although the food was a little pricey it was worth it to me. After a less than perfect start, and only dining at Thai Pepper for lunches for years, we started going for dinners a couple of years ago (pre-Covid). Oh man. This is what we had been missing. Excellent cocktails, top-notch seafood curry, and lamb chops to die for. Plus fried bananas and ice cream for dessert. Pro-tip: sit by the creek, especially in the spring when the snowmelt is roaring by. Beautiful setting. Never in all the 35 years we've loved Thai food have we ever had such a disappointment as we did with our dinner here 6/28...we'd never eaten there, so we tried Thai Fried Rice and Green Curry...basic. arriver unappealing and tasteless....wasn't even nice to look at, nor aromatic like most Thai. I've been craving Thai food for months, but the "traditional" Thai cooking offered in San Francisco is full of sugar and cooked with very low end ingredients. That's what most people are used to and expect. One good friend of mine used to own 2 Thai restaurants in SF, but they sold the business a year ago because of the unfriendly business policies here. Anyways, we have been exploring Ashland cuisine. We didn't know what to expect before coming in. We are sooooo surprised by how fresh the ingredients are! The satay sauce is house made obviously. The lamb is fresh! The Tom yum soup is light and pleasantly flavored. The prawns are tender and juicy. (I normally don't ever order seafood at an Asian restaurant except Japanese due to freshness concerns.) The drunken noodles and the yellow country curry are delicious. It's not packed with sugar. Have you ever got curry sauce on your hands accidentally? Your hands are sticky because of the sugar. I can taste the curry spices! We did not talk until we ate everything! Great service as well! If you like Asian food you probably won't find any here, if you like mediocre Asian style American food, This place is still terrible, although the ambiance is decent. Let me extrapolate how I define terrible: -clearly not fresh ingredients -over cooked rice and veggies (for an Asian place, the rice here would make most Asian people ashamed, like how do you fuck up the rice?!) -they advertise classic Asian dishes like pad Thai, curry, and spring rolls, and they literally make them all taste like they are covered in sugar without any spice. I think the owner has spent too long here and either forgot how to cook Asian food or never learned in the first place -overpriced, a bowl of mediocre curry with smashed, over cooked rice is like $17-18 -service is inconsistent: I used to come here years ago with friends and we almost always got one of two waitstaff that were So soft spoken you could never hear them and they commonly messed up our orders. Recently I haven't gone into eat inside cus historically they service was avoidable. read more

A year and a half later: Our favorite place in Ashland has now slipped into sub-averageness. The food is still very good, but they closed the lower level leaving only the upstairs bar area open. (Sign says the lower level is for lease.) Forget any thought of having a quiet dinner. The noise equals every other rowdy sports bar, sucking the joy right out of the place. Tables are close together and the acoustics are such that you're able to hear every detail of the discussion at the next table. (If you've read my other reviews, you'll recall that for me this is the kiss of death.). In addition, our server was unexceptional and the food came much more slowly. (Appetizers should not take 20+ minutes.) After 20+ years of visiting Thai Pepper without fail every time we come to Ashland, it breaks my heart to say this, but we won't be returning. The sports-bar atmosphere has ruined the experience. read more

Disappointed that I have to give even one star. Came in the restaurant only to have one of the staff rudely berate one of my guests. When I told her that I wouldn't tolerate that kind of behavior, she aggressively asked me to leave. Which we did. And went to the sushi place nearby and had a lovely meal with polite service. After nearly two years of lockdown, it's wonderful that they have so much business that they can afford to treat customers this way. Lots of other restaurants in town. Even though I've been coming here for so many years, when I walk up to the door, my eyes can't help but look at the menu and wonder what new treats are waiting for me inside. I wander down the white stairs, all the while hoping there won't be a wait for one of the coveted tables. Tonight we were early enough to beat the rush. The food, as always, was perfect. I had the usual appetizers (all of them are delicious), but the two specials were really something. The Curry Seafood was a mix of shrimp, mussels, clams, octopus, and white fish in a curry sauce. So good! The Salmon was done to perfection with baby bok choy and a sauce that was beyond definition. Never has this restaurant disappointed me and tonight was no exception. TIP: They have gift cards if you want to give someone in Ashland a real treat! read more

We made a reservation by phone for dinner with friends about week before for June 12. Unfortunately when we arrived, the reservation had somehow not been entered in the reservation book and they had no available tables. I was able to show them the actual phone call record and they believed we had made the reservation, but indicated that they were so short staffed that things like this were happening occasionally. The point of this review is to both describe how they reacted to this issue and also to talk about their food. A lovely woman who I believe must have been a manager accepted responsibility and apologized, and offered to pay for our drinks and appetizers and to seat us at the bar upstairs. While this was very generous, it was still disappointing because our reservation had been for a table on the patio next to the creek. She then offered to seat us at "the single table they had on the back patio" and we happily took it because it was better than bar seating even if it was the "back" patio. Much to our delight, this initially mediocre sounding table was right next to the creek, just a little higher up than their other patio, and we were the ONLY table on the patio! Our evening proceeded wonderfully, with amazing service and amazing food and drinks. I've honestly been repeatedly surprised by the negative reviews I've seen on Yelp! for the Thai Pepper over the years and by the mediocre 3-star rating it seems to consistently have. I think many people mistakenly believe this is supposed to be an "authentic" Thai restaurant (at least, based on some of the reviews complaining about the inauthenticity of the food), rather than what it really is, which is more of a Thai fusion restaurant with a chef's twist. I can't think of anything we've had there that wasn't delicious, including especially the Tiger Rolls and the calamari. We've been going to Ashland every year for nearly a decade and we make a point of going to the Thai Pepper every visit, so we clearly highly recommend it! read more

($21 flank steak with onions and a couple tomato wedges) The tofu pad Thai that I paid 2$ extra for veggies, lacked all the veggies and only had half a piece of a sliced red pepper and all broccoli stems. Also as a vegetarian I eat eggs and was offended that on my receipt they put veggie pad Thai with eggs seriously** Yeah seriously I don't see how my diet and what I choose to eat as a joke. The Indonesian peanut sauce was far from sauce ! How old is it? Its not saucy but a chunky paste that's burnt with no flavor. It had to be over a week old. We paid with tip about 60$ for 2 shitty dishes. On a separate bill i got a Thai tea and that was good. I've eaten there before and it's usually ok and never has my food looked as shitty as it does today. This will be my last time at Thai pepper Also if your going to have a grimy looking kitchen don't have it open for all your restaurant guest to see. read more
