I was craving Asian food after spending two days in Crater Lake National Park, and this place truly hit the spot. The restaurant was busy with a Labor Day crowd and seemed a bit understaffed, but the owner/waitress was incredibly warm and welcoming. My husband and I ordered the spicy chicken cubes, eggplant with garlic sauce, and rare beef pho. The stir-fries were outstanding--the chicken packed a punch with spice and that wonderful numbing kick from Sichuan peppercorns, and the eggplant was fried to perfection with crispy edges, just like a dish I loved growing up in China. My husband enjoyed his pho as well. The kitchen was clearly overwhelmed with online orders, so they weren't able to prepare some of the authentic dishes from their "secret menu," but what we did have was excellent. ZERO STARS!!!! Came to this place looking for comfort Asian food. Ordered boba tea (Jasmin, lychee and rose milk)--it was overly sweet-and the boba was all wrong and clumpy and gross! We ordered some specials from the display on the wall-and were told "if the cook has time to make it, they can do it, but they aren't sure". If you can't do it-why offer it?? We asked for water 3x after being sat down-and still didn't get it. I had to walk up to the counter to ask again and I stood there and waited for it. They had 1-other table dining in, but they never came back to check on our waters out anything else..I had to yet again walk up with my cups and ask for refills. Terrible food, overly salty, terrible drinks and Boba, and terrible customer service. For a Chinese owned place- this is very much the stereotypical bad service Asian place you would expect! We have been craving for a good pho restaurant. We moved from Orange County to Medford. The OC is known for its foodie scene and also the Vietnamese community. I am Vietnamese and grew up with Vietnamese food all my life. We parked in the parking lot and walked over to the restaurant. There's a handwritten sign on the door that says they have cheesecake if we write a review. That didn't instill much confidence from first impressions. But I was sooo pleasantly surprised! The spring rolls were good, authentic tasting. Then came the rare beef pho. I would have preferred the beef to come on a separate plate so I can see how fresh it is so I will have to ask that next time but I am soooo happy we came here because the broth was spot on!!! The pho noodles were perfectly cooked and in excess even! I got 5 pieces of beef slices which I wish were more and one bowl of pho was indeed pricier than back in OC, but to be able to find a good bowl of pho out here southern Oregon is amazing. We all left full and happy! The service was good but surprisingly the waiter was not Vietnamese. I didn't get to see the cook but I'm happily surprised by this gem of a restaurant! One of my friends suggested we try here. I have been missing some of the comforts of home, so I ordered the vermicelli noodles with shrimp. This was sooooooo good! Nice crisp vegetables and just the right seasoning of the sauce. I can get use to living out here since some of the things I love can be found. Having been in the area, happy bowl has been a relatively consistent meal that is located ideally in town. Specifically, not being right in the heart of downtown is nice because it fills a niche of food diversity for that area which is very helpful to not have to travel long distances. My most recent experience there was pleasant but also of slight nostalgia. Recently, their menu was overhauled and I do miss their previous menu which had a lot more options and felt more authenticity. I felt that that last time I went while the food was good it felt a little bit more formulaic and lacking a certain character to it. The one great factor is they have kept their prices very reasonable and very good quantity of food! Definitely able to get leftovers for lunch the next day out of the meal. The food is actually good as long as you know what you're ordering because if you're not familiar with the food, you might end up not liking it. Service is great, they help you as soon as they can. It is clean but the space isn't much so if its crowded, itll be tight to go through. Update: I went in again order boba taro, I had paid for the boba extra. Then they said they dont have boba. So I was like didn't I pay extra for the boba but they didn't bother mentioning they should give the money back. I am not unsatisfied with the service. They no longer have the secret Chinese menu, whatever they have on the current menu is tailoring to the American taste buds. I remembered their kung pao chicken was pretty good from 3 years ago, but now it's just general's chicken with some peanuts on it. Family wanted to get pho and rice on a road trip north. They seated us quickly and gave out some ice water, and they come around to fill every once in a while. I ordered the spicy salt and pepper chicken which comes with rice. I thought that the chicken was at a good spice level, with the spice level being moderate. Not having a wide variety to choose from, my family decided to go with Happy Bowl for dinner during our stay at Medford. Unfortunately there weren't too many restaurants in the area that we wanted to try, so we had to make the drive to Ashford. The restaurant is located in a plaza with a bunch of other restaurants. Parking is widely available; we came maybe an hour before closing, but the store was already empty. The workers were sitting at the table, probably ready to close-up soon. We were seated immediately and able to put in our order once we were ready. So Happy Bowl is a Chinese and Vietnamese restaurant. They offer pho, fried noodle/rice, vegetarian dishes, vermicelli, rice dishes, but they also have Chinese options. We all stuck with ordering Vietnamese type dishes. I went with the beef meat ball pho ($9.75) - definitely more pricey than most pho places in SGV. And just for beef balls, too. I liked the amount of cilantro that was poured into the bowl. That really helped enhance the flavor. As for the beef balls - there were only maybe four or five inside the bowl. Not a great number considering the heftier price I'm paying. Vermicelli was a good amount though. The broth wasn't too salty or heavy, but unfortunately it was really oily. I could taste the oil getting stuck to my lips as I ate the noodles, which made me more conscious of what was going into my stomach. Overall, it wasn't too bad. Nothing memorable, but nothing too awful. I believe my sister and dad both ordered the rare steak and well down pho (also $9.75 each). Their bowls weren't as oily as mine! (So maybe it came from the beef balls?) Meat was much thicker than I was used to, and a good portion size. They thought it tasted fairly good. And my mom - as usual - went out of her way to order something different. She ordered the grilled beef and egg rolls vermicelli for $9.75. We could kind of see the kitchen area and what they were cooking, and we noticed that it didn't look like they grilled the meat. There definitely wasn't any wok hei to the overall dish. Beef was more charboiled and underwhelming in flavor. After mixing the bean sprouts, peanuts, lettuce and what not along with the fish sauce, I thought the flavor was still very muted and not tasty. A sweetness rang through the dish, but I wasn't a fan of it. This was a disappointment out of all the other dishes. Workers were really nice. Seemed like a family-run establishment. tl;dr - Overall, a decent pho place if you're craving some Vietnamese food in Oregon. It's not the best, but it does satisfy the pho craving. From my judgment, the negative reviews of Happy Bowl are missing the point. Are they *mostly* accurate? Sometimes, indeed, what you get may not match up to Lúc Lắc levels (if you've been to Portland) per say, but to focus exclusively on taste (which is still great!) is to forsake HB's most important aspect: its authenticity and heart. For us Ashlanders, Happy Bowl provides the best Vietnamese/Chinese food I can find in the city, in the , with respect to the fact that the chefs themselves hold primary experience in the type of cuisine they are crafting. Coming back from China in 2018, I knew I wouldn't be able to taste any semi-accurate depiction of 麻婆 tofu unless I was actually able to hop on a plane and go back. The people at HB proved me wrong, delivering exactly the tofu experience I was looking for. It may take a while for your order to be completed. That's OK! Most of the time, the location has only three workers and has quite a few orders to deal with. The good news is that your food will come and everything will be alright in the end. If you're not looking for the most serene dining experience in the world, but want a hug from a bowl of noodles that were made with love, spend an evening with Happy Bowl. read more

Very impressive menu line-up on both the Vietnamese and Chinese sides. I would say the food is on par with similar offerings in the Sacramento, California, area and is quite affordable. I was very satisfied with my braised eggplants from the Chinese menu that tasted better than a similar dish I ordered in San Francisco, and my dad quite enjoyed his bowl of beef pho. Also, I didn't know you could get boba in Southern Oregon, so despite the fact that options are limited, I was ecstatic to get my fix.
