It's a Friday night after an exhaustive week of teaching. I'm on a pretty strict diet trying to lose all the weight I've gained this first year of teaching but it's Friday and I don't want whole grain rice, shrimp and green beans for the 5th time this week. I need something flavorful and delicious. I'm a huge Thai food fan so I decided to give this place a shot since it had solid reviews. I walk in around 9:30 and there are some couples and two families. Dinner for one can be super awkward so I thankfully have my phone. I can reddit, Facebook and do whatever I need to in order to distract myself from the reality that I lack friends on a Friday night and my social life is non existent. Shit, it's on 5% battery and is going to die soon...Then I'll be stuck awkwardly looking around at everybody conversing. I put in my order for Pad Thai and my phone is now down to 3%. Pretty soon I'm going to start listening to the young couple next to me talk about their honeymoon plans. 2%...Now I'm starting to hear the mom next to me fuss about her son's financial aid situation at his college. BOOM. Dinner served. It took 5 minutes for them to make my food. I'm not even joking. Literally 5 minutes to make some of the best Pad Thai I've ever had. The tofu was the exact level of crunchiness I like and the different parts of the dish all had flavors that complemented eachother well. I got level 3 spicy and it was the perfect amount, 4 might have been too much. The plate was perhaps the most aesthetically pleasing plate I've seen in years. Organized extremely well with colors spread around the plate. They also put in some flowers to add some extra beauty. Extremely friendly staff, great ambience and a clean restaurant make this a place I definitely will come back to. I live five minutes away so I look forward to eating here many more times. It's been a while since I have ventured out for Thai and my mom lives close by. She comes here often, but this was my first time and now I know why she keeps coming back. We came here for the first time for dinner on a rainy November evening, and it was fabulous. The place has a slightly more formal feel after dark, in a nice way. The prices are only a little higher than the lunch menu, with portions a bit larger to match. Jamie got the Pad Thai, and it was the best she'd ever had. She ordered at "2" level spicy (on a scale where 5 is the hottest), and would go 3 next time. The ingredients were fresh, perfectly prepared, and overall delicious-fantastic. I got the same thing I usually get for lunch, Panang Curry, spicy level 4, and it was amazing, rich, complex, and dark, with fresh veggies and tofu- so good I can't bring myself to order anything else. One time I drove back to get what I ordered and they didn't comp anything. The last time I checked it before I left, it was wrong. I had to wait 15 minutes for the dish that I actually ordered. So I definitely understand where a lot of the reviews complaining about the service come from. I came in for lunch today and the server asked me if I wanted soup or salad. When I asked what kind of soup, she sounded completely exasperated and said, "I don't know." Not wanting to be any more of a burden on her, I just asked for salad. Though it would have been nice to know that the salad comes with peanut dressing before I had ordered it--I DON'T EAT PEANUTS. And then the server asked me if I didn't like the salad. So I decided to give this horrible restaurant another chance tonight. I ordered our food, stated very plainly in the order that if this order wasn't right, it would be my last order from them. So an hour and 20 minutes after I ordered the food I called to find out where the food was. The person that answered the phone told me they were busy and he was sorry it was late and that the food would be there in about 10 minutes (the restaurant is less than 10 minutes from my house). I was very unhappy with this and asked to speak to the owner of the business (who, btw, when I complained before responded back blaming me for the problem). I told her that I placed an order over an hour ago and it still wasn't here. I also told her that this wasn't the first time I had problems with wrong orders and orders being late from them. She told me they don't do online orders and that my food was never ordered. Even though the other guy knew what my order was and said it would be there in 10 minutes. I told her she was crazy and they absolutely do accept online orders. She the. Told me she doesn't want customers like me and that plenty of other people like their restaurant. This is the worst service I've ever received from someone in public customer service. I truly warn anyone that this restaurant doesn't care at all about service, or taking care of customers. I was introducing a friend to Thai food who was very hesitant to try it and so I ordered a big variety of things certain we would find something that she liked. Chicken Satay -- chicken was extremely dry and overcooked. Chicken Pad Thai -- very greasy noodles and lacked flavor. Orange chicken -- fried grease balls without much flavor. Red Curry Chicken -- was the worst I have ever had -- tasted like fish sauce and was completely inedible. Ginger Chicken was the best thing I ordered....but very average. I had a delightful lunch at Thai Opal, and I'm looking forward to returning for lunch again. When I met a friend at noon, there was almost no one else in the restaurant. Despite the somewhat bleak strip mall location, the interior is calm and pleasant. The lunch specials are very well-priced at $10 for a filling (but not overwhelmingly huge) entree and soup or salad. Any dish can be made with tofu or vegetables, and so can (I assume*) be vegetarian or vegan friendly (you'd have to ask for it without egg if you get a noodle dish.) I tried the spicy basil noodles with tofu, which were excellent and really delicious; I ordered them a spice level 2 of 5, which was mildly spicy. The soup option was coconut chicken (tom kha gai) when I went; I got the salad. The dressing was nice and light. For $2 or $3 more you can get a lunch combo that also includes a soft drink and either an egg roll or crab rangoon (depending on what dish you order.) I'd be happy to return to try some more of the lunch specials! *Caution: I didn't confirm whether they use hidden non-vegetarian ingredients in any dishes, like fish sauce, so you'd have to ask about that. read more

I read a review for "a new thai place" online, looked it up on the map and suggested to my housemate that we try a new place for dinner tonight. Oddly, all of the reviews I had found were for the former occupant of the space at this address. HOWEVER, I am so very glad that we decided to give it a try. First impression... nice warm cloth presented for pre-dinner freshening up. VERY nice touch. The decor is nice (I loved the elephant cushions) and the real candles on the tables. Attention to DETAILS! Which carry over to the food. First up - appetizer - Chicken Satay. Very nicely done skewered chicken in a delightful sauce served with a peanut sauce that had just the right amount of spice. The cucumber onion salad was amazing... sweet with just a little "zing" of vinegar taste. Everything melded together well. Perfect start to the meal. I ordered the Curry Fried Rice with Shrimp. I took a chance and ordered spice level 2 (out of 5). I could have gone with a 3 and been fine and the server (who I think is also the owner) offered to spice it up more, but I didn't want to give it up because I was enjoying it too much! My housemate had the Spicy Basil Chicken (he went with spice level 3, which was right where we like it... so your nose runs a bit but you don't get so lost in the heat that the flavor of the dish is gone). He got the egg fried rice, which was a perfect companion for the dish. I also ordered the Lemongrass Tea, which the server told us takes a while to make. It was ABSOLUTELY worth the wait. The Thai Tea my housemate got was quite good, as well. Before we had even finished, we were speculating about what we would order on our next visit. Placed an order for a lunch box with an order of summer rolls on the side. Online, the box specified it comes with soup, salad, an egg roll, choice of entree, side of ride, and can of soda. The lunch box is about $15 so I place my order. I go to pick up my order and check my bag only to find the entree from the lunch box and summer rolls. Confused, I ask about the soup, salad, and egg roll that appears to be missing. The worker proceeds to say it's not something they are doing during covid. I'm understanding of the amended procedures but at least specify them ONLINE. I would have chosen the regular sized entree instead of the box had I known the extras were not included. False advertisement. I paid $26 for something I could have paid $20 for and they made me to feel like I was wrong to ask about something I already paid for. Plus, I checked the door on the way out and there's no sign or ANYTHING saying lunch boxes are not sold as is. Ridiculous. If I'm supporting small restaurants during covid then the least they can do is provide quality customer service and this was not it. Will not be returning. I don't write a lot of reviews--but Thai Opal deserves one. This has been a favorite of my family's for years, from casual weekend dinners to birthday celebrations. The owner comes to our table every single time to chat and make sure everything's excellent. This is one of the local restaurants I've been getting takeout from regularly during COVID because they're such good, hardworking people who really deserve to stay in business. The food is always great, and ordering takeout from them is a breeze with their curbside pick-up tent. Thanks to Yelp I found this place. I saw mostly 5 stars so I decided to try it today, even if it is 20 mins from my work. I should say, I don't easily rate 5 stars but it was hard not to rate this place 5 stars. I had an early lunch so I was the first one there. I was greeted by Susan who I assumed to be the owner, she was nice and very friendly. We chatted a bit about the restaurant. She certainly takes a lot of pride in her work, she commented about the food quality to the filter water she was serving. And she rightfully should, everything was just right. The food was serve with a nice presentation and even the water was serve in a fancy glass with covered straw as if you were dinning in an upscale restaurant. The place is very clean with calm atmosphere. A place where you can bring wine and dine with your date. Yes, it is BYOB. I ordered Red curry and asked to have it make spicy. The portion were decent. I enjoyed the food so much that I ordered another Panang Curry for my wife. This place will give you a lot of bang for you buck. The place certainly lived up to what the owner and other reviewer promised. What is more impressive is how great the service was. They really work hard to win you over at this place.
