When we got there and looked at the menu, I realized it wasn't the type of Malaysian food I normally eat but we gave it a try anyways. Why not try something new. The owner was so nice and answered all our questions and explained the options on the menu for us. We ordered the chilli chicken, roti, and the curry chicken on the side. Everything was absolutely delicious! We couldn't finish everything so we took the chilli chicken to go as well as the curry chicken cause it was so good. Told my husband to stop by the place and bring back some takeout for me anytime he goes to Toronto.

With a limited menu, this unlikely little place deserves a 4 out of 5 for taste. The kitchen appeared clean as well. They had a limited menu with kitchen table, and we tried the lamb and chicken rendang with mee goreng noodles and roti canai respectively. The mango salad was tasty too! Unfortunately, the roti was somewhat disappointing, as it was already pre-made and reheated which made it greasy and not too appealing. The owners are from Ipoh, Malaysia (a couple of hours from Penang) and were very polite and willing to please. Apparently, they also make 'Bubur cha-cha,' a classic coconut milk dessert which contains sweet potatoes and taro. I might have to try it next time.

Truth be told, I am not a fan of the original version of this dish because of the bitter edge from the lye. So though this isn't quite authentic I prefer this version (without the bitterness). The noodles weren't quite right (mixing rice vermicelli with yellow noodles) & it was not that wet or black, but I was okay with that. There was a lot of pork & shrimp in it. It was flavourful though it didn't quite have the smoky wok flavour. The stock was rich & it was generously seasoned with liquid lard & crispy lard. The belachan (hot sauce) was odd - like spicy samsui chicken ginger sauce.

Unfortunately I didn't really enjoy the food here and thought the price did not reflect into the dishes. Here's what we got: Hokkaido Scallop Crudo 3/5 - Came with ginger scallion on top. I thought that the ginger scallion was too strong of a flavour and I couldn't taste the freshness of the raw scallop over the sauce Kari Puff 4/5 - The best thing we got on the menu. It's chickpeas and potatoes fried in a crispy pastry. great for sharing and came with a delicious garlic sauce. Prosperity Tossed Slaw 2/5 - On the menu it says it's a 20 piece ingredient salad but it was mostly shredded carrots and daikon. It was extremely small and hard to share because they was so little of it. Not worth at all. Char Kway Teow 3/5 - A charred rice noodle with tiger prawns, chives, sambal, and bean sprouts. Again the portions were small and it was nothing special and taste. Rendang Braised Beef 2/5 - It's a curry braised beef rib served with Jasmine rice. The beef rib was extremely dry, chewy, and we didn't finish the dish since it was so hard to eat. Probably will not get this again. Banana Leaf Fish 3.5/5 - A grilled steelhead trout fillet in tamarind, sambal, and served with Jasmine rice. I thought it was okay but not really worth the $32 price tag. Overall, I think the food was just okay, with most of the dishes being nothing special. Prices are high for the small portions that you get. Definitely has room for improvement.

Looks like a table by the front entrance is reserved for owner admin purposes. Front area filled with good luck paraphilia to ward off evil spirits. My friend knew all the staff and proceeded right away to speak Malay. Let my friend do the ordering, I recognized a few of the dishes such as beef curry, chicken curry (both with roti), boneless chicken rice plate, chicken skewers, grilled sambal stingray, penang hokkien mee and a few other dishes (look at photos) I didn't recognise. There was one interesting dish Rojak, a mixed salad of chopped fruit & vegetables smothered in a pungent fermented shrimp sauce, sweet, tangy, spicy, a whole smorgasbord of flavors dancing on my tongue. Three words I've never used to describe Roti, theirs was crunchy, fluffy and moist, wonderfully dipped either in the beef or chicken curry. Chicken skewers were grilled well, meat remained moist with a nice grilled aftertaste, not necessary to dip into the accompanied curry sauce as the overall flavor stood on its own. The Sambal sting ray was a little disappointing, didn't match the memory of the one I had at the Singaporean hawker food court I had a few years ago. Overall flavor was lacking. Penang Hokkien Mee is the real deal, large plump shrimp w/ firm egg noodles in a somewhat spicy flavorful broth. We came on a Friday night, the restaurant was about 50% full, what a great cultural food experience which needs further support.

Char Kwei Teow was nice, the wok hei was very apparent here as well as the Kang Kung Belacan (water spinach). The hainanese chicken while tasty was very bony (menu said it had bones). The place was far from crowded when we showed up, and we were told to check out the menus and place our order at the front. (I also got a milk tea to drink, and it was really good. Very rich but not too sweet.) The sandwiches were both excellent. They were packed with flavor and the various components all worked really well together. The Malaysian Street Style did flirt with being just a little too sweet, but it was balanced out with the other components. Everything was decently priced, too. The bill, with tip, came out to around 25 bucks, which is great considering the quantity and caliber of food we were given.
