We discovered Thai Chef about a month ago and have returned about twice a week since then. I can't say enough good things about the food, service, and prices. Although Pad Thai w/Chicken is our go-to meal, we've tried a number of their other dishes and appetizers, and after each meal we leave completely happy and satisfied. The dining room and bathrooms are cleaner than most Asian restaurants, the wait staff is quick and friendly, and the food is some of the best Thai we've had in the GR area. My boyfriend and I LOVE tom yum and tom kha soup. We've tried it just about everywhere around Lansing and Grand Rapids. We are both very sensitive to fillers, preservatives, msg, etc. So we know almost immediately when restaurants use them. Our stomachs get hard and bloated, or we feel sleepy. Last night after about 30 minutes of eating both soups, my boyfriend got VERY sick and threw it all up. Called them this morning and they said they used MSG... must have used a ton if it made him puke so fast! Or maybe something spoiled was used. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!! Shouldn't have to use MSG to make your food taste better. I told them they should post somewhere in their restaurant that they use MSG as many people are sensitive to that and Chinese places barely use it anymore. read more

I have been to this place in the past and have really enjoyed my meals. Yesterday I got some take out that was inedible. I got the Basil Delight and I did ask for it hot. Their "hot" is spicier that most places, and I understand that. The dish I got was so peppery that I could not eat it, not chili pepper hot, but black peppery hot. Black pepper was all I could taste, again I like chili hot but this was just horrible. I called to inquire and maybe it was the language barrier, but they said "ya that is the way it is supposed to be". Their policy is that they won't take back something that is too spicy, and I understand that, but again it wasn't too spicy, it was VERY peppery and they didn't understand or didn't care. read more

The food is amazing. This was my third visit to Thai Chef. I must say that I have had great experience the first two times I have been there, both with the food as well the service. Surprisingly, last night it wasn't the same. Our server who was a middle aged Caucasian woman seemed not interested and came across as outright rude! She would not smile or look at your face. Made sure she replied in an arrogant tone to each of our questions and even came to us and said we have to leave soon as it's about to close soon. However, she didn't tell this to the people sitting in other tables. Again what stood out was her attitude and bad service despite having such great tasty food. I love checking out new Thai places around town. Heard about this place a couple months ago so decided to check it. It's hidden in a little strip mall at Knapp's Corner. Cozy and comfortable inside. The service was great. We didn't have to wait long for our food, which was nice. It was a little on the pricier side...most dinner options coming in at $9-10. We started off with a spring roll, which was good. They were, unfortunately, out of a vegetarian spring roll option, so I resorted to the chicken spring roll. It was pretty good. I always get Pad Thai when I check out a new place to gauge how good the place may be and this was no different. To be honest, I've had better. To me, it seemed a little slimy, too much moisture or something. I guess I like my Pad Thai on the drier side. My friend got the Pad Pak. She liked the variety of veggies it had. We both agreed that their "medium spicy" could have been spicier. I might be up for trying something else at this place but I have a list of other Thai places I'd like to try and other favorite places to go before I come back here. read more

This is just a hole in the wall kind of place. It's pretty small. I've honestly never eaten in so I couldn't say how the serving staff is, but I'm always happy with the quality of my take out. The best part is that it's consistent. So they either have the same staff working all the time or they're well trained. Great flavor! I usually either get the Tom Kha soup or the Pa Nang Curry. Thai is getting to be a "dime-a-dozen" food commodity, even in a smaller city like Grand Rapids. Just like with Chinese, you're likely to find watered-down, bland, and utterly unsatisfying food. This is NOT the case at Thai Chef. It is the best Thai I've had anywhere, and I've had Thai in several countries and many cities in the U.S. The food is amazing, and with a full range of flavors. Their Tom Yum has the acid notes of fresh tomatoes, pleases the nose with cilantro, and pops with sour lemongrass, and savory, tender pieces of chicken. It's exactly how Tom Yum is supposed to taste. I cannot tell you how disappointing it is to have Tom Yum that is nothing more than peppery chicken broth with some scallions. Thai Chef's gives me a reason to keep living. The Tom Kha is no different, but has the wonderful flavors of coconut milk blended in as well. I get this pretty much every time I visit (which is at least three times a month). The "Fish Bowl", which is basically Tom Yum with fillets of fish in it, is also an excellent meal. Delicious. Their curries actually taste like curry! It's not just "brown sauce" on noodles. The Gang Kiew Wan (E13 on their menu) bursts with flavor (not heat, unless you ask for it), and the pieces of eggplant not only have the perfect consistency, but they have an unbelievably savory and nutty flavor. I don't like eggplant. Eggplant is a pain in the butt to cook. It takes real skill to turn it into my FAVORITE part of the dish. I didn't want to get the Pad Thai. Pad Thai might as well be the all-you-can-eat-buffet sweet and sour chicken of Thai food. The waitress recommended it to me, as a change of pace, and I'm like, "come on." I didn't even know Pad Thai could be good! My mind was blown. A perfect dish. For me, it is entirely secondary to flavor, as I'd rather eat delicious food out of a styrofoam take-out box than a beautifully presented, but uninspired meal, but they also do an excellent job plating the food, when you eat in. The dishes are garnished with turnip and carrot flourettes, and shredded turnip confetti, on a colorful service. That means, it's not just a great place to grab take-out, it's also a place you can bring a date. I've been all around the menu. Everything is good. Everything. Just make sure you get the soup. You really, definitely won't regret it. Furthermore, the place looks and smells exceptionally clean, with cozy decoration. The staff is friendly and helpful. I can find no fault with this place. The only problem is that it is TOO good, and I'm afraid something will happen to it. read more

We've been here many times, and I wouldn't call it Thai-Thai, but it's good. This time I had the pad la prik, a crispy catfish swimming in a spicy brown sauce and green pepper and onion. Review in a sentence: If you value quality over quantity with great service, this is the place to go! Let me start of with saying that I'm not a fan of Thai food. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something about it that makes me place it towards the end of the list of my preferences for food. That said, after eating a late lunch/early dinner here, my opinion on Thai food has changed considerably. Thai Chef looks like a hole in the wall kind of place from outside, but the interior was surprisingly well-decorated - tastefully. The waitresses spoke perfect English and were attentive but not overbearing; they've got the "seat, drinks, order, checking in, bill" timing down! After ordering hot tea all around, I ordered the Chicken LoMein (Medium+ spicy level), my boyfriend ordered the Chicken Peanut Curry Noodles (Hot spicy level), and my boyfriend's father ordered the Pork Almond Entree (Medium spicy level). Each dish was under $9 before tax, so our bill after tax and tip came out to be just under $35. I was a little skeptical about how different the spicy levels would be, but there were clear differences between the three dishes. "Hot" had you feeling the heat as soon as you swallowed, but you didn't feel the heat in Medium+ until a third of the way through your meal. Medium was more of an added flare of taste rather than heat itself. All three of us were very happy with the quality of the food and really happy with how it tasted. If Goldilocks was looking for a perfect Thai meal, she wouldn't be going anywhere else. The sauces met that balance between being too salty and too bland. The food was surprisingly light, too - not a lot of oil and definitely no puddles of oily sauce. I got a taste of my boyfriend's Peanut Curry, and neither the peanut nor the curry overpowered the other. After tasting an almond from his father's dish, I concluded that the food was cooked to the perfect level where the nuts were cooked through. I usually don't finish my meal, even if it is really good, because it's usually too much food, but I cleaned my plate at this meal. I couldn't quite tell right away whether it was because portions were smaller than I typically experience or if it was just that good. An hour or so later, I'd have to say it was both. The portions were smaller than what I normally get when I eat out, but if given the opportunity to choose a place to eat again in this area of GR, I'd choose Thai Chef in a heartbeat. I am a consistent 25% tipper and for the very first time in my entire life I did not leave a tip. We never sent anything back or complained but we were all disappointed. Although the dishes had nice garnishes, they arrived 20 minutes apart and cold. The spice level was no spice for my daughter and it was the hottest dish on the table. Had to ask for our rice and it never came until after our dinners were done. Asked twice for water and asked twice for a to go box. Table was never cleared. Then I was miss charged on my bill for an item. When I brought it to the attention of the restaurant they said "Waiter made a mistake but he is "NEW" so...Sorry we cant fix it". But when the cashier made a big deal in front of all the restaurant guests about me bringing the miss charger to their attention. I said "No problem I will just pay the bill as is, and I will just reflect the difference of the miss charge in the tip" she called me rude and told me I would have bad karma. Then she followed me back to my table and further insulted me in front of my family loud enough for the whole restaurant to hear. This put my children in very awkward place. So at that point I left no tip at all. She sad "you should not be mad at the waiter, you were not the only table at the restaurant". I said I was not mad, but I should not be charged for something I did not order". As I walked out the the door the cashier yells "there is is always Karma" and I just replied "and there is also Yelp". As a small business owner, I would encourage feedback on my new staff. If a customer had a mistake on the bill I would make it right. If there was someone "New" I would give them a mentor. Customers understand if you treat them respectfully. I would chalk this up as a bad day for the restaurant and try them again on another day, but I would not risk exposing my kids to the head waitress/cashier again. Without a doubt, my favorite Thai restaurant in the Grand Rapids area. The food is always delicious, authentic and flavorful. Service is usually pretty great. The spice, however, is inconsistent. I usually like it hot, but the "hot" option has ranged from tasting mild to making me want to keel over. I now order medium to stay safe. Their pad Thai is definitely my favorite, but I'm pretty obsessed with the basil and massaman curry here, too. We dined here around 7:30 on a recent Tuesday evening. The place was mostly empty and we were seated immediately. We ordered crab wontons (5 for $4.95) for our appetizer and pattani with beef ($9.95, E 18 on the menu) for our entree. The crab wontons arrived about five minutes later along with the usual bowl of sweet and sour dipping sauce. The crab wontons were good but nothing exceptional; just average. About five minutes after finishing our crab wontons the entree arrived. All of their entrees come with free steamed white rice. We had ordered the entree "hot" on their scale, but we were both mildly disappointed, deeming it to be more medium than hot (we like our Thai very hot though). Overall the dish was excellent however, with terrific flavor and perfect crunch to the vegetables.
