I'm a big fan of Lai Thai. Their take out portions are gigantic and are ready pretty quickly. However, I think the best possible option is to eat there! The service is always really friendly and the food is just so much better fresh out of the kitchen. I love their fresh rolls, their peanut pad thai and their peanut curry. During the summer, they have mango sticky rice that is absolutely delicious. I recommend always going to at least mild spice - without it that flavor can be a bit lacking. Take out review. Cannot comment on service or ambiance. APPS: Crab Rangoon (not pictured) - May be the best I've had in Grand Rapids. Very visible crab meat. I don't know what the sauce was, but it wasn't the typical and I kind of missed that. These ones don't really need sauce though. Spring rolls (not pictured)- overall good. Didn't feel there was much in it. Same sauce as the rangoons. Chicken satay (pictured)- most of the reason for a lowered review. This is my FAVORITE dish and it came in a bag that was extremely soggy so the peanut sauce flew out and spilled all over the kitchen rug. The chicken was okay. Definitely not my favorite and wouldn't order again. No comments on the peanut sauce other than it wasn't horrible to clean out of the rug. Also- no cucumber sauce is disappointing. ENTREES: Pad Thai- there were 2 options on the menu which was confusing bc they seemed to be the exact same. This one is NOT the one that says peanut in the title. The sauce was really red which I have never experienced. It was good. I wish there were some extra veggies in it. Orange chicken- the sauce separate from the fried chicken is genius. This was my favorite I've had as well. The chicken was incredibly crispy and it was nice to be able to control how saucey you had it. A definite order. Pineapple fried rice- medium was pretty mild honestly. Not as much flavor as expected. My husband thought it was kind of bland but he wasn't disappointed. I really want to love Lai Thai since it's near where I live and still one of the few Thai restaurants open on Sundays, but it's just always a bit lacking for me. I haven't dined in since my last experience, but recently ordered delivery while we had some illness in the house. I got the special curry pad Thai and Nate got the peanut pad Thai. We also got an order of crab rangoon. These are typical go-to orders for us, so we were hoping for something similar to our favorite spot. However, it just missed the mark. The food was all super fresh and hot and packaged nicely, but the flavors were just off. The special curry pad Thai definitely didn't have much of a curry flavor and the amount of chicken was pretty sad. The chicken also tastes like it was cooked previously and reheated, which is really off-putting to me. Nate commented that his peanut pad Thai was sweeter than he preferred, which is saying something because he has a huge sweet tooth. The portion sizes were generous, so that was a good thing. Our disappointment may mostly stem from the fact that these dishes just aren't as good as our favorite Thai spot, but I do appreciate their open hours and delivery options. We have only ever ordered takeout from a delivery company so I am not sure what the location looks like but their food is really good. My favorite thing is the chicken drunk noodles. The noodles are perfectly charred and the flavor of the sauce is really good. You can choose your own spice level and I always get it second from the hottest and it's still not too spicy. Their chicken gyoza is also really good and they come with a salty sweet sauce. Their vegetable pho is also really good the broth is very fresh and savory. Their coconut fried rice is slightly sweet and is very good and savory. It also had a slight char that added great flavor. I really have never ordered anything I didn't like. read more

i haven't had chinese food since i became vegan. as a chicken and broccoli lover I didn't know what else i would get... just a bunch of veggies? no fun. recently a friend mentioned lai thai and despite the name, has chinese options that are yummy and vegan. so the next day i went to lai thai. i got the szechuan tofu and the steamed vegetable gyoza. the tofu had a great texture and great flavor. the sauce was good as well but it was completely liquid so not really a sauce. when i poured it on my rice it turned my dish more into a soup. but the flavor was good. it was little sweet as i've seen other reviews say about other dishes so i added some soy sauce and problem solved. my partner got the crab rangoons which he said were "really good". he also got the rainbow paradise which he said was really good and he would get it again. the desserts also looked so tasty (and all vegan) so i'll have to try those one day. overall this a great place for vegans and non vegans. i loved the sign they had right on their window that advertised they had vegan options. very cool and i really enjoyed my meal even if my sauce was soup. i look forward to trying other items. read more

The ambience was cheerful. All the tables were full. The service was attentive and kind. Unfortunately we did not enjoy the food. The tofu was horrible. Fried, tough-chewy, dry and bitter tasting. There weren't enough vegetables in the vegetable dishes, which is disappointing for vegetarians. The coconut pie is not your favorite fluffy coconut cream pie. It's gloppy, fatty, ickiness at its worst. Stopped by to pick up some carry out after a long day up north. The people are very polite and nice. Unfortunately, the pho combination was not quite what I expected. The "rare beef brisket" was already cooked through and seemed to have been overcooked to say the least. It did not leave a good taste in our mouth. The broth & noodles, however, was quite flavorful and good. We also got the crispy pad thai and I guess I was expecting it to be more like Cantonese chow mein type of noodles but the sweet sauce threw me off. It was not bad but wasn't my favorite. The summer rolls were lacking something as well. Compared to traditional Vietnamese summer rolls that typically come with shrimp and a slice of cooked pork, these ones came with one choice of protein. A good place to satisfy your cravings for some Asian food. I come here for lunch every so often as its closer than other places with decent quality. Quite a small seating area with 8~ tables or so but usually have no problem with seating. Ordered the Bangkok rolls, Pho combination, and mango sticky rice. Bangkok rolls are crispy and served with a light cucumber mint sauce which is very delicious. Good portion for a starter. The Pho combination is average ~ not amazing but didn't dislike it either. The broth seems like its just a bit too thin and not providing most of the flavor. The hoison sauce and other veggies/herbs provided most of the taste. Mango sticky rice is also delicious~ if only it was a bigger portion :). Mango ripeness along with the coconut milk layer that coats the sticky rice and sesame seeds is a perfect combination (note that this is seasonal) Good food for a good price ~ just come during non-peak hours to avoid the seating issues read more

Also, they have the orders sitting out in the open air without anything to keep them warm, which is neglectful and poor customer service. Overall, enjoyable, just pricey. We ordered coconut fried rice with chicken, green curry with beef, and orange chicken. The fried rice ended up being the most savory of all three items. Quite good. But, portion-wise, probably not 12 bucks worth. The green curry was good, but sweet. If you're looking for something savory, this isn't it. The orange chicken was fine. I'd prefer larger chunks of meat like what you'd expect from a typical Chinese place, but this was still good. Complaints: The white rice they gave us with the entrees was not enough. As you can see in our pictures, the container was not stuffed full as you'd expect from a normal Chinese place. This was especially a problem because of how saucy and sweet both entrees were. There is a LOT of liquid with the green curry, for instance. Which is great, except...there wasn't enough rice to eat it with. Leaving orders out in the open air to get cold is unacceptable. The green curry didn't have much solid food in it. Mostly watery curry sauce. Portions in general were disappointing. Overall, the food was good, but the price for the portions you get...eh. I'm not saying I wouldn't come here again, I'm just saying I'd look for other places to try first. Mainly based on price/portion ratio. But if I did come here again, I'd enjoy it. I'm gluten free and allergic to fish. The fact that there's so many GF and vegan options was so nice! I had the broccoli stir fry with tofu and it was just what I was craving. So light and flavorful! The garlic and ginger were very noticeable, and it was overall a filling meal that didn't feel heavy. Warning to anyone who doesn't handle spice well- they're serious with the spice! Not a bad thing to me but if you're sensitive order mild! Good pricing and so many options, I will for sure be back to try more things next time I'm visiting Grand Rapids! read more

My daughter has been raving about Lai Thai since she moved to Grand Rapids. I FINALLY got to go and try them over Thanksgiving week. Oh my goodness!!! I CRAVE their food now that I'm back home!!!!! They can do almost everything vegetarian and/or vegan but they also offer beef, chicken, and shrimp so you can customize your base food choice to your taste. They also adjust the heat level to your need. The server was so careful to explain that their mild was a bit hotter than most. I usually go medium in most Thai restaurants (except for most places in Omaha. Here I go HOT). Mild was the PERFECT spice level!!!! The menu has some unique items and I would have loved to go back and try more. I ended up ordering the special salmon in coconut broth and veggies. So delicious!!!! My daughter ordered the special Pad Thai. It's more southern Thailand and uses a sweeter dark soy sauce. Also so craveable!!!! The doughnuts are light, not greasy at all (get the peanuts!), and the best I've ever had. The also just got in young coconut pie so of COURSE I had to get a slice of that! It's vegan so a dessert for everyone! They even make their own boba and they are tender and delish! I can't say enough about Lai Thai! I only wish they were closer. Just got Lai Thai delivered and this was my first time ordering from here so I didn't know what to expect. I got the veggie summer rolls, gyoza, krab rangoons and cucumber salad. Flavors were not horrible but oh my word I am so disappointed I spent money on this. Summer rolls are mostly just iceberg lettuce inside, and it looked moderately wilty and old. Gyoza was overpriced (everything was), but taste was decent. Rangoons had barely any filling at all and I asked for sweet and sour sauce but they didn't include it. Cucumber salad was a joke. Looks like someone threw their scraps from cooking into a container and threw some vinegar in there. Overall highly disappointed and 10/10 do not recommend this restaurant. read more

I am extremely picky when it comes to quality of chicken, and can always tell when it's cooked frozen.. but there's has never tasted bad to me. This is a GREAT little place. While most of the business appears to take-out, we've been there at least 3 or 4 times. Service is great, Food is great. I've been to Lai Thai twice now and both times the staff were super friendly and fast. The food is excellent. This time we got the appetizers of the fried chicken and the kalbi ribs. Both were good but I enjoyed the fried chicken more because of the crispness and because it's served with sweet chili sauce. The ribs came with a sweet dipping sauce. For an entree I had the super crazy crispy pad thai tofu (level 1 spice out of 10 - I can't handle spicy don't judge me...) and it's so good. I love the crispness and the sauce. For dessert we had the fried banana with ice cream, and it reminded me of the Filipino style Turon (fried banana rolls) I grew up with. I'll be back for sure! read more
