After trying a few places on a Sunday afternoon to get some takeout dinner, we ended up at Hong Kong express she was very kind taking our order and very efficient told me it would be 10 minutes and it wasn't any more than that. We ordered the beef and vegetables and the cashew chicken and it was amazing. We were very pleased with all the food and there is definitely enough for one more or two more meals. The restaurant was very quiet for a Sunday afternoon, but I'll tell you it's obvious that they're go to is takeout people were coming in the door one after the other. read more

As a person who frequents this place as many times a year as possible for the last 14 years of my life - let me tell you exactly what you're getting here. Restaurant interior vibe, 0/10 Staff friendliness, 3/10 Food, 100/10 I say this because you gotta know what you're coming here for. If you want the absolute best hole in the wall, you don't wanna know the calorie count because it's made with nothing but experience and love Chinese food THIS IS IT. The crab rangoons are outrageously crispy, the portions are enormous, the fried rice and lo mein are insane, and the honey chicken is literally to die for. This isn't where you go to get that fancy Asian cuisine - this is where you go to get that classic American version that's bad for your waistline but good for your soul. The restaurant owner/cook has been there every single time I've been here - even through covid. She's never said more words than absolutely necessary to me, but I don't need her to be the most friendly human in the world I just need her to keep cooking this food exactly how she has been for as long as I've been going here. She's overworked and underpaid so all the reviews that give her a hard time - QUIT. LET HER COOK. This was a staple for me during college because I could make one order last 3 meals. I will forever be obsessed with and grateful for this food and the woman who prepares it. I've traveled all over the world, gotten Chinese food hundreds of times, and no one's ever beat this meal for me. A Grand Rapids staple that should be protected at all costs. read more

Ordered pickup and the order was ready within 10 minutes. Great portion for the lunch special and just the right amount of spice.

Ordered takeout from here on a Saturday night, won't be ordering again. The egg drop soup was inedible, tasted like they boiled the eggs. Flavor was just way off on all the food. Portions were decent and service was fast but not worth it to me for the taste. read more

I only live a block in the condos from the restaurant I've honestly been going to this restaurant every day and the food was good, but the service was bad. One day I found a bug in my food, and the lady continually argue me down and said that I put it in my food. She just went give me my money back it was only $8.43, the point of the matter is just give me my money back and I could've went on about my day however, she just argued me over and over and said the police were coming because it was not her fault read more

I dream of it. It was my first experience of quality Chinese food when I moved to GR 20 years ago. I've had many "fine dining" Chinese experiences and been to chinatowns in major US cities over the years. I live in VA now but this is honestly the best fast Chinese takeout I've ever had. Call, order, pickup and enjoy. Can't wait to get back to GR to have some solid lo mein. I encourage anyone who has left a bad review to watch the kitchen. See the woks literally engulfed in fire and tell me that it's no good. You're not gonna get that at Panda Express or PF Changs. These folks really understand what it takes to make quality Chinese food. The gal at the front is awesome if you're not a douche. Temper your expectations for a mainly takeout place. Be nice, get nice. Only idiots complain about bugs in their food at a place like this. Just get the extra protein... or pick it out. You're not gonna die from a fly. Also, I've never experienced anything of the sort ordering from them 100+ times in the ten years I've lived there. But maybe I just ate my food and enjoyed instead of picking through it looking for mystical beast lying within. TLDR: they know what they're doing and have been doing it well for 20+ years. Try the broccoli with bean curd in garlic sauce and vegetable lo mein. read more

Good Chinese food we got the same chicken with broccoli with white rice and Sesame Chicken. They have hot sauce on request. It was a take out we called ahead and the order was ready when I arrived. There are a lot of Chinese restaurants in the area, but this is the best. Clean restaurant and nice staff. They have a buffet but are constantly changing the food out so it is fresh! Hong Kong Express has been around for quite a long time, and there are so few of this type of restaurant in the downtown area (most takeout and buffet Chinese spots are located out in the burbs or on busy big box shopping center spots like 28th St or Alpine, or near Rivertown Mall or Woodland, etc...) It is located on the corner of Fulton and Jefferson, so it's pretty centrally-located. I would say its more of a takeout joint than an eat-in place, but they do in fact have dine-in service and lunch buffet (which Ive never done). I usually get their tofu and broccoli dish, a pretty standard vegetarian takeout dish for these types of places. Ive come here off and on throughout the years because its cheap, ok quality, filling and the portions are plentiful, usually enough to have a leftover meal. Years ago, I used to have a nearby job and we'd order takeout from them on lunch breaks and it would almost always be incorrect. Like orange chicken instead of sesame chicken, Mongolian beef instead of Kung Pao beef...eventually we jokingly started calling it "Hong Kong Surprise". Or if we picked up the order a little later than expected, the lady who works at the counter would berate us for being late. It was kind of funny and we came to expect those things as part of the Hong Kong Surprise experience, bless them. So yeah, not the best place ever, but I like that there's a reasonable cheap takeout place in that spot thats constantly changing/gentrifying. read more

This may be the only bad review I've ever left and I struggle to do it because I empathize with small business. However, if you are going to have prime real estate in Fulton you need to bring your A game. 1. When I came in, the attitude is that I was interrupting the cashiers lunch. 2. The buffet options were lacking and what I did get, was actually cold. Those heat lamps are not working. Maybe they are just lamps? 3. I had to ask for chopsticks. When you are a hole in the wall place, you have to compensate with food taste/value, and then of course being nice. They did not do either. And here's the clinker... for this buffet and hot tea (which she put a tea back in hot water in a styrofoam cup), my total was $8.22. I always tip a dollar so $9.22. If I wasn't obsessed with Asian food I would have probably left. read more

Best Chinese food in the area! Great service! delicious food! Placed a big order and was ready when I got there a must try!!

This place surprises me with every order we place. It's usually never busy and a carry out order is ready within 10-15 minutes. They throw in free crab Rangoon all the time which is great. The combos are a great size and the pricing is extremely reasonable. I have never tried their lunch buffet, so I can rank them on that. read more

READ THIS FIRST! Hong Kong Express is can't miss Chinese...great food, great value, generous portions and free appetizers with certain orders! Whether you are a resident or the Heritage Hill area ( as I am,) an out of towner or just simply love Chinese food, this is the place. Lilly and her family operate this asian eatery, 7 days a week with buffet lunches that are amazing COVID restrictions permitting. Mostly it's a popular destination for take out. I am a former chef and restaurant owner I live 5 blocks from Hong Kong Express and have eaten there since they opened. I have never had a cold anything, whether on their buffet or take out! I order from this Chinese restaurant more than any other in town. We've never had a bad entrée, and they just added vegetarian spring rolls (6 for $4, I believe)! My favorite thing to do is go in for their lunch buffet, which is $7 for a to-go box full of whatever dishes you choose plus a cup of soup. (Hell yeah, egg drop!) If you'd rather dine in, they have in-house specials, too. They also offer soda pop for a buck, and rice comes with most entrées. Tip: Call ahead of time for carry out! They're very fast, usually only a 10 minute wait. And say hi to the owner's kids if they're around. They're awfully sweet. :) read more

Crazy good value here. Been here three times for take out and I have been very pleased. The quart containers are always bursting open. Never Have I seen that before. Pros: I didn't feel like they were trying to poison us. Cons: Everything else. Pricey for what you get. Buffet was cold and, frankly, gross looking. Not a single napkin in sight. Styrofoam everything. Plastic cutlery. The seats in their booths are beyond repair and duct taped. The food was edible, but not good by any stretch of the imagination. Don't waste your time. For 1, who the hell serves food with paper plates when your dinning in?! I also asked for water and the lady pointed to a picture of water that was in the cooler! Hong Kong Express is my favorite Chinese Restaurant in Grand Rapids and I have pretty much tried them all. I eat there several times a month, so I am fortunate that HKE is a few blocks from my Heritage Hill home. I have eaten at the Luncheon Buffet which at under $9 is a bargain. I spent more than that at Arby's last week! The food is fresh, hot and tasty the menu is extensive, the portion size is generous and value is what you will get from dining at Hong Kong Express. Last week we had dinner for two, including, Soup, Egg Rolls two different entrees, ( and free crab rangoon,) all for under $25.00. We also had enough food left over for both of us to have lunch the next day! read more

Our student organization used Hong Kong Express to cater our meeting and they were great! Super easy to work with! Lots of food (they threw in a few extra things for us including utensils and plates as well as fortune cookies and some yummy treats) for a very fair price. The lady working was super sweet and accommodating, even ran out to our car as we were pulling away to deliver the plates we had accidentally left behind. They had quite a selection of food that looked pretty legit, and the people who showed up at our meeting loved the fried rice, egg rolls, and crab ragoon that we got. read more

Hong Kong Express - A2 combo sesame & sweet and sour chicken - Chinese Near Me - Grand Rapids, Michigan

The orange chicken is a revelation. The mix of crispy chicken and the sweet sauce is the plantonic ideal of this dish.

I came here after my mom kept telling me about how much she loved it here, both times she went. So I came here two days ago, even though I usually try to eat healthy. I got the orange chicken combination plate, and the orange sauce was pretty good and the chicken was actually really crispy, compared to other restaurants where the breading is usually soggy. Also, the portion was HUGE for $8! But then I started to get a stomach ache that eventually seemed to be food poisoning. Two days later, I still feel awful, and the chicken (or maybe the sprouts in the rice) are the only things I had that day that could have made me sick. So, the food was good (as far as cheap fried chicken takeout goes), but I probably won't be coming back anytime soon. :( read more

Love this place, but skip the buffet. Order from the menu instead. Yelp has the hours wrong. They close at 10pm.

I order take-out usually two or three times per month. Food is always good and portions are large. One dish plus a couple of egg roles is good for two meals. Owner/manager is real friendly, but English is very choppy. If you want something specific/different from the menu like omitting a vegetable you don't like, you need to make sure they understand, because they probably don't! Occasionally I will go for the all-you-can-eat buffet, but I prefer to order something that hasn't been picked over by other patrons. None-the-less, I will go back every week or two for my filling of Chinese! read more

We went for the lunch buffet a few weeks ago. They had a pretty good selection of food. We were there towards the end of the buffet hours so there wasn't a ton of stuff but then a big group came in so they made some fresh stuff. Not the nicest atmosphere but if you are looking for some cheap good Chinese food, I would recommend this place. I like their Sesame chicken and their Lo Mein noodles.
