I dream of it. It was my first experience of quality Chinese food when I moved to GR 20 years ago. I've had many "fine dining" Chinese experiences and been to chinatowns in major US cities over the years. I live in VA now but this is honestly the best fast Chinese takeout I've ever had. Call, order, pickup and enjoy. Can't wait to get back to GR to have some solid lo mein. I encourage anyone who has left a bad review to watch the kitchen. See the woks literally engulfed in fire and tell me that it's no good. You're not gonna get that at Panda Express or PF Changs. These folks really understand what it takes to make quality Chinese food. The gal at the front is awesome if you're not a douche. Temper your expectations for a mainly takeout place. Be nice, get nice. Only idiots complain about bugs in their food at a place like this. Just get the extra protein... or pick it out. You're not gonna die from a fly. There are a lot of Chinese restaurants in the area, but this is the best. Clean restaurant and nice staff. They have a buffet but are constantly changing the food out so it is fresh! Hong Kong Express has been around for quite a long time, and there are so few of this type of restaurant in the downtown area (most takeout and buffet Chinese spots are located out in the burbs or on busy big box shopping center spots like 28th St or Alpine, or near Rivertown Mall or Woodland, etc...) It is located on the corner of Fulton and Jefferson, so it's pretty centrally-located. I would say its more of a takeout joint than an eat-in place, but they do in fact have dine-in service and lunch buffet (which Ive never done). I usually get their tofu and broccoli dish, a pretty standard vegetarian takeout dish for these types of places. Ive come here off and on throughout the years because its cheap, ok quality, filling and the portions are plentiful, usually enough to have a leftover meal. Years ago, I used to have a nearby job and we'd order takeout from them on lunch breaks and it would almost always be incorrect. Like orange chicken instead of sesame chicken, Mongolian beef instead of Kung Pao beef...eventually we jokingly started calling it "Hong Kong Surprise". Or if we picked up the order a little later than expected, the lady who works at the counter would berate us for being late. It was kind of funny and we came to expect those things as part of the Hong Kong Surprise experience, bless them. This may be the only bad review I've ever left and I struggle to do it because I empathize with small business. However, if you are going to have prime real estate in Fulton you need to bring your A game. 1. When I came in, the attitude is that I was interrupting the cashiers lunch. 2. The buffet options were lacking and what I did get, was actually cold. Those heat lamps are not working. Maybe they are just lamps? 3. I had to ask for chopsticks. When you are a hole in the wall place, you have to compensate with food taste/value, and then of course being nice. They did not do either. And here's the clinker... for this buffet and hot tea (which she put a tea back in hot water in a styrofoam cup), my total was $8.22. I always tip a dollar so $9.22. This place surprises me with every order we place. It's usually never busy and a carry out order is ready within 10-15 minutes. They throw in free crab Rangoon all the time which is great. My favorite thing to do is go in for their lunch buffet, which is $7 for a to-go box full of whatever dishes you choose plus a cup of soup. (Hell yeah, egg drop!) Crazy good value here. Been here three times for take out and I have been very pleased. The quart containers are always bursting open. Never Have I seen that before. The menu selection is huge and it will be years before I try it all. Everything I have had so far has been very edible. I eat there several times a month, so I am fortunate that HKE is a few blocks from my Heritage Hill home. I have eaten at the Luncheon Buffet which at under $9 is a bargain. I spent more than that at Arby's last week! The food is fresh, hot and tasty the menu is extensive, the portion size is generous and value is what you will get from dining at Hong Kong Express. Last week we had dinner for two, including, Soup, Egg Rolls two different entrees, ( and free crab rangoon,) all for under $25.00. Lots of food (they threw in a few extra things for us including utensils and plates as well as fortune cookies and some yummy treats) for a very fair price. The lady working was super sweet and accommodating, even ran out to our car as we were pulling away to deliver the plates we had accidentally left behind. I came here after my mom kept telling me about how much she loved it here, both times she went. So I came here two days ago, even though I usually try to eat healthy. I got the orange chicken combination plate, and the orange sauce was pretty good and the chicken was actually really crispy, compared to other restaurants where the breading is usually soggy. Also, the portion was HUGE for $8! But then I started to get a stomach ache that eventually seemed to be food poisoning. Two days later, I still feel awful, and the chicken (or maybe the sprouts in the rice) are the only things I had that day that could have made me sick. I order take-out usually two or three times per month. Food is always good and portions are large. One dish plus a couple of egg roles is good for two meals. Owner/manager is real friendly, but English is very choppy. If you want something specific/different from the menu like omitting a vegetable you don't like, you need to make sure they understand, because they probably don't! Occasionally I will go for the all-you-can-eat buffet, but I prefer to order something that hasn't been picked over by other patrons. We went for the lunch buffet a few weeks ago. They had a pretty good selection of food. We were there towards the end of the buffet hours so there wasn't a ton of stuff but then a big group came in so they made some fresh stuff. Not the nicest atmosphere but if you are looking for some cheap good Chinese food, I would recommend this place. I like their Sesame chicken and their Lo Mein noodles.
