Sesame Chicken
Kristyn H.

I've been looking for a Chinese restaurant for awhile since my favorite local place's owner retired. This was pretty close. A lot of places I've tried have chewy tough chicken- not this place! The chicken pieces were tender and nicely breaded for my sesame chicken. We also bought Lemon Chicken to take home, the breast pieces were also nicely breaded and reheated okay as leftovers. Crab Rangoons were good, not the best I've ever had- but still pretty good! Egg rolls are THICK, packed with lots of meat. I prefer more veggies in my egg rolls, but my family was really happy with them. The waitress was very attentive, nice and personable. The restaurant seemed clean, although we were sat towards the front of the restaurant. I'll be going back strictly for sesame chicken made right! Thank you for having a good recipe!

I really wanted some Chinese food to celebrate Lunar New Year, so I found some places on Yelp and Three Happiness was at the top of my list. The dining area is spacious and cozy with old-school vibes. We were seated right away and ordered spicy steamed wontons, Kung Po chicken, and chicken with garlic sauce. On Sundays the dinner entrees come with a free soup and egg roll. We were able to try the egg drop soup and the hot and sour soup this way. The soups were both delicious, with the hot and sour soup being one of the best I've tried in the area. The spicy wontons were super spicy! The chili oil was hot and the spice lingered. The wontons were perfectly steamed and the meat inside was flavorful. The egg rolls were big and very good with the accompanying spicy mustard. Our entrees came out and were generous portions. You could probably split one between two people if you're not super hungry. We had plenty of leftovers. The Kung Po chicken was my favorite - not spicy but savory and flavorful. The chicken with garlic sauce was quite a bit sweeter than I preferred, but the menu does indicate that it's a spicy and sweet sauce. The food we had was all great, but the service from our server was a bit cold and not super welcoming. The employees at the front counter were very friendly though. I'd come back but just do takeout rather than dining in next time.

We won't be coming back, mainly because of the absurd prices. Portions are not great. Prices are insane (see included updated menu pictures). $17.80 per beef entree? Biden's economy is rough, but if Beijing Kitchen can do $14.50 beef entrees, located in downtown Grand Rapids, you guys can shave a few bucks off, too. On top of that Beijing Kitchen is just better food. The food itself was...OK. I liked the solids -- the beef, the chicken, the crunchy mixings, etc -- but the sauces were pretty lousy. The curry chicken did have a very slight kick to it, but really didn't have the flavor of even the worst of their competitors. I wasn't expecting anything special, but it just didn't have nearly any interesting flavor. The mongolian beef was quite sweet. Good, but sweet, and there wasn't any other character to the sauce to offset the sugar. The customer service wasn't great, either. Not that people weren't pleasant enough. Rather, when I ordered, I was not told what the total would be (and the prices you find online are outdated). When I arrived, the food was sitting out in the open air getting cold. Why do these places never use a heat lamp? Being wrapped in a paper bag helps hold the heat in a bit, I guess, but when you're charging as much as you are, I'd at least like to make sure my food is hot when I eat it. As I mentioned, the prices aren't updated online, which is another common Chinese restaurant failing, and this really needs to be addressed. "Surprise! Your total is over 13% higher than what's listed on the website menu!" I don't have any ill will towards this place, but there is genuinely no reason to come here, given other options are less expensive and have better food. Mongolian beef shouldn't taste candied. Curry chicken shouldn't taste like someone forgot to add any spices. And prices should be reasonable and posted beforehand. Want something cheap? Check out Number 1 Chinese in West River Drive. Want something way better than Three Happiness, while also being less expensive? Beijing Kitchen. Are you further south and west? Blue Ginger. South and east? Fuji Buffet will get you better food, all you can eat, for significantly less than you pay for a single entree here. I can't think of any reason to come back.

Not sure what happened but the food used to be really good but that's not the case anymore. Eggrolls were terrible.

I started going here years ago while working a split shift job; lunch time was 9pm and this place…read morewas the only joint close by. It was also cheap, fast and generous! That job is long gone but my family and I have remained loyal customers. We usually get take out and every once in a great while, they surprise us with a free appetizer or order of warm, sugared biscuits. YUM!!! The dining atmosphere isn't super ambient; however, it is very clean and welcoming for families with children of any age. The day time buffet is a pretty good deal, too if you want to eat in (I think they let you fill a to-go container for the buffet price, too?!). The other great feature of China City is they are adaptable to your tastes or dietary needs: just ask them and they will make your order exactly how you want it (and probably remember you wanted it like that the next time you go in to, without even asking). (Side note to those who give China City a poor review: you're right, it doesn't compare to a full service restaurant like Lai Thai or First Wok. Those places are way more expensive, for one thing; are set up for an ambient in-house dining experience; and, are not always quite as generous, either. I've had some bad meals at one of the aforementioned - more often than I have here at China City! People tend to develop a "taste" for certain restaurants for sure and a trying a new place may have your taste buds pissed off, I don't know. I wouldn't recommend this place for a romantic date, necessarily, but if you're hungry...welcome to China City!)

I ordered takeout for lunch and was very surprised at the large portion and great value. The order…read morewas ready in about 10 minutes and the service is very quick and friendly. I ordered the orange chicken combo and it was still hot and delicious when I got home to eat it.
