Ehh, went here for coconut chicken curry and was not satisfied at all. I make it WAY better at home. It was extremely watery - and it also tasted like it went bad? I ordered a Pad Thai, and it was so sweet! I was barely able to eat a couple of bites and had to throw away the rest of $15 food.

Who wanz Thai foooo??? Eye wanz Thai foooo!!! EYE WUBS THAI FOOOOOO!!! So I go to eat Thai food at this place recommended by a friend. Well we get there and find a typical Thai place overall. Heck they even had a wait for tables at 7:30 on a Thursday night. Great signs right? Then we sat down to wait for a seat and I was able to notice and ascertain that a fifth of the tables were people that were finished but just shooting the chit for a bit. Well the bit turned into at least 15 minutes. *shrugs* so the staff cant really help that so time to move on from it... so we went to our seat and ordered a couple of items and chatted as we waited for our grub. Pro Tip: Ask for extra water, they will forget you are there if you have your food and they are busy at all... We got the base Panang chicken curry and garlic chicken. We ordered both medium spicy. Neither was very spicy and the curry was not spicy at all, not even a hint which you could at least taste a lil bit of spiciness in the garlic chicken. Both came with a scoop of rice. Needless to say they were average at best for the taste as well. One of my worst Thai experiences recently. While we were seated and waiting for our order, they let several people into the second room through a glass wall where apparently there was a private party. This was a major problem as we couldn't flag down anyone till it was check time and by then, we were no longer thirsty. So I think I will pass on a return visit here. I enjoyed our meal at Thai Cafe over the weekend. While I'd never been to the Mexican restaurant that was formerly located here, I had passed by many times, and they definitely did a good job transforming the space into Thai Cafe. I imagine there are better tables, but we were seated next to the window with a view of the street and the Wienerschnitzel drive-thru. Fortunately, BF and I were not out on a romantic date. We decided to share the Kai Kua noodles (wide rice noodles with chicken, squid, green onions, and bean sprouts) and the Pla Dook Phad Phet (fried catfish in red curry with Thai eggplant and bell peppers). The noodles were pretty good and the portion was huge. The catfish was excellent. It was a nice tang and spice, and I really liked the round green eggplant. Be warned that the fish contains a lot of bones, which we were not expecting. I didn't seem to get too many, but BF was constantly taking bones out of his mouth. For dessert we got the mango sticky rice which was delicious. On top of the rice was some kind of toasted seeds that gave it a nice contrast in texture with a good crunch. BF didn't think he really liked mango, but he couldn't stop eating the dessert. It was a really big serving, and we both were too full to finish it, so we took the rest home. I met up with some friends who I had not seen in several months and in those months, had a baby boy who is not 6 1/2 months old. So yeah, I haven't seen them in at least 6 months, probably closer to 9-10. So I was debating a little bit about where to go because I wanted to try a new place, somewhere that was in the Irvine/Tustin area because they live over by Tustin Marketplace, something relatively inexpensive because they've got a baby to care for, and that sounded good and seemed pretty safe. I decided on this place because of Tammers N. The waitress was nice. She gave us plenty of time because we got caught up a little chatting and catching up. We eventually ordered the pad thai, the pineapple fried rice, and.... moo khal something? It was pork with lots of veggies. Basically a stir fry. I agree with Tammers that the prices initially seemed kind of steep, but the portions are more along the lines of family style, so that's what we did. The food itself was pretty good. Flavors weren't perfect, but it wasn't anywhere near bland. I would've liked a little bit more spice and whatnot, but I wasn't complaining. We finished it all. The pad thai and pineapple fried rice were probably my favorite. That other dish was just mediocre. I know this is a relatively short review for what I normally write, but ya'll can just suck it. Ok fine... what else.. Because this restaurant is still relatively new, it was very clean and not "dirty" like some older Thai places can be. Oh, so on top of our waitress being nice, our waters were never empty. After passing by Thai Cafe numerous times on my way to Shik Do Rak, China Garden and other restaurants on the corner of Jeffery and Walnut, FI and I decided to give Thai Cafe a try. Initially, I was struck at their prices- $10 for a plate of Pad Thai?! Daymn! What I did not know, is that it's more family-style and the portions are ample for 2 people. We ordered the Pad Thai and the Pad See Ew. Both were pretty good. I've written before that I've never had bad Thai food so I think this place is pretty tasty. I HAD to have the Thai tea of course, which was made from scratch (plus a point in my book), though it was a little sweeter than I preferred. I can't help but wonder how this place looked like before as a Mexican joint- it's pretty small and at the right table, you can look straight into the kitchen. One thing that caught my attention is the rounded counter top with the bright green neon circle light above it. It's just a station to serve beverages, but it looked like a great setup for strippers to dance. Don't ask me why it reminded me of it- I guess I had more on my mind than just Thai food. lol! Would I come back- sure. I would rather drive here for dinner than to go all the way out to Costa Mesa for George's whose waiters like to bus your plates without asking if you would like it to go (it happened to my roomie again!). read more

We rummage through piles of coupons and mailers and see 15% off or Buy 1 entree, get 1 entree half off at Thai Cafe. We had never tried the place, since it was El Conejo. Good riddens, that place served crappy Mexican food. Stepping foot inside, I was definitely surprised at the clean and modern decor. Nothing fancy, but a very relaxing atmosphere. From the start, service was exceptional. Smiles all around, ice water topped off at a moment's notice, just an overall friendly vibe. We go for the standard Thai fare, tom yum noodle soup and pad thai. I had the pad thai ordered spicy to kick it up a notch. It definitely gives it an added dimension over the tamarind sweetness that plague many pad thai dishes. Of course, I'm no expert on Thai food, but I thought the dishes were nicely done. After reading the rave reviews about this place, I decided to come here for dinner before the Yochh event at Proof. Thai Cafe is located in what used to be El Conejo Mexican restaurant. As you walk in the door, you are welcomed by a bright and clean atmosphere, and inviting hosts. While I do think the food is good, I've definitely had much better in comparison. We ordered the beef panang and the beef salad. I was impressed with the panang, as it used lots of Thai basil and other ingredients, and had a thicker consistency than most other restaurants do. The only bad part of it was the cheaper cuts of beef they used... I'm thinking from the skirt.... that made it have a jerky consistency. They did the same with the beef salad as well. While the flavor is there, it would have been much better if they used better quality ingredients... which, BTW, would also justify the pricing. Dishes here range in the $10-$12 range, but the portions they give you are generous. Overall, not a bad dining experience though... good service and decent food. read more

This place is pretty clearly targeted at white folks. Good service. High prices. Menu has high production value. Food is ok. Tom ka gai - a bit sweet - had giant chunks of unripe tomatoes, which I hate. Chicken curry - chicken was undersalted. Maybe even unsalted. Tiger beef (or something) - didn't love this - had some wierd seasoning. Also - pretty expensive. $60 for 2 adults and 3 kids (2 appetizers, 2 mains). But, my review is mainly for their customer service - i mean is it just me or does everyone else notice how ALL of the workers here seem to be always mad! No one ever smiles -- its like theyre pist off because theyre working. Hands down the WORST SERVICE I've ever received at any restaurant. (Warning: It's going to be a long and detailed review. Also, excuse my French.) We had a party of 6 and were seated immediately bc we called earlier to reserve. Everything's going fine so far. We order our food. We're all starving & we realize at least 40 minutes had passed & our food was still not out! I make eye contact with our server as she looks at our table. She has a look of "Oh shit, I've forgotten all about that table." We ask her how much longer it'll take & she says she'll go check. She comes back but she's serving other tables and doesn't report back to us. RUDE! We ask her again & she says they're backed up. You could have warned us earlier & let us know! We ask if they started cooking our food and she says no. O_O Are you fucking serious?! At this point, all of us wanted to get up and leave. But before we could get up, the server (we're tended by 3 different servers btw) plops a curry dish my friend had ordered on the table. A minute ago you said the food wasn't prepared or cooked. Yet, you suddenly bring our food out. What a damn liar! Slowly, yet surely they bring out all of our food. Some of us had ordered pad see ew and pad thai which should not have taken long to make at all since most people tend to order those anyway. The food was decent, but personally I've had better Pad Thai. The shrimp seemed a little undercooked. Also, as our food was SLOWLY coming out one by one, other parties that came way after us had received their food before us!!! We're all still pretty pissed off as we devour our food. One of the servers came by and asked if we were done with one of the plates but she said it in a bitchy tone. Someone needs to get their attitude checked. If anything, all the servers should have given us a sincere apology for the wait and provided us with friendly service. After at least one hour of waiting for everyone's food to come out, we all should have received a huge ass discount for our dinner. This is just six people's experience eating here. I wish I could give this place a 3.5 stars. It's not bad, but it's not amazing either. But, I would definitely come here if I'm ever craving Thai food and I'm too lazy to drive out to LA. After 10 months, I think this place really went down the drain. The service became horrible. I'm willing to think that their food at least tastes the same way it did, but that still wouldn't be as good as they were a year and a half ago. I wouldn't know what their food currently tastes like anyway. I came here on a date with my woman to dine. We were seated in the center of the restaurant. Everything seemed fine. It wasn't too crowded. They came around and asked if we were ready to order. My date said "Just a moment please, sorry" The waitress politely smiled and walked to serve others. Then we put our menus at the edge of the table as a sure sign that we were ready. We waited. For 15 minutes. We figured that they were serving others, but saw at least one or two waitresses standing idly. I do sound entitled, but I figure that they shouldn't treat us any differently from other customers. We were sitting at the center of the restaurant and I'm pretty sure they saw us with the menus closed. Finally, after about 20 minutes elapsed, we left. Their water was nice. They gave us a straw to drink it with. I'm willing to give this place another try. Another time. My review may change. Good service, after all, is a cornerstone trait for any successful restaurant. I used to get takeout from here a lot because it was the closest thai restaurant to me at the time, and my husband didn't want to drive any further. If given other options, I'd go for the other ones every time! First, this place is expensive! $12.95 for Pad Thai! Also the prices do not match those on the take-out menu. wtf? The pad thai is good, except for the cheap tiny from a frozen package shrimp they put on the regular pad thai. Come on now. No one likes that! If it weren't for the shrimp, everything else, chicken, tofu, egg, on the pad thai are pretty good. I do have to say, the curry chicken is very flavorful and unique. It's heavy with bamboo shoots, and taste, which I like, but some people may not if not used to the flavor. I would also prefer not to go to this place because it's difficult to drive into and park! Not their fault I suppose, but makes it less appealing. Overall, it's ok. I just feel you get more flavor and bang for your buck elsewhere. read more

For the price the praportions were not very good. Typical for Irvine. Overpriced average food is the result of high overhead I would guess. I mean the food was good but on average a plate was $15.00. Service was not friendly but not poor eather. We always had what we needed but I never saw a smile or got any extra pizzazz from the servers. Just Meh attitudes. The Chicken skewers that I had I must say was very good. Seasoned just about right and not dry. But for the price eh ill pass ive experienced better at lower costs and happier service. And the mango sticky rice was just that. Mango on sticky rice just plopped on top of each other. There was very little ownership of the dessert as I feel was the attitude all around for this place. And their Pad Thai, Pad See Ewe, Fried rice and the list goes on... My friend loves the Boat Noodle, which I like as well, but their Tom Yum is the best! The minced basil chicken with fried egg is also very good! Everything is very well done, pretty close to home cooking I am told. I have to give this place 5 stars for quality of food and service. My favorite food is Thai and I visited many Thai restaurants in California. I have to say that here the food is awesome and the price is reasonable. The Staff is super friendly and they serve the food in very short time .Yesterday we showed up 9 women for a birthday party and we were served in minutes. There is a variety of soups, salads, appetizers and entries. Awesome food at very reasonable prices. We enjoyed about half in the restaurant and we will finish the leftovers at brunch today. We look forward to return and bring more friends next time. read more

Eek! Methinks not. We came here a few weeks ago because we were looking for a place to have the rehearsal dinner for my sister's wedding. My family is half Thai, so it's hard to find Thai food that is actually good. Friday night... super packed. We had made reservations for 9 people, and of course we had to wait anyway. No one was there to check us in, and when we asked them ourselves, they never really said anything about a table, just walked away. Finally we were seated in the back room which is very cold. A perfect place to be completely ignored. Water arrived very late, and was never refilled after that. The waitresses, of whom there were aplenty, were nowhere to be seen. And by the time we were ready to order it wasn't even that busy any more. Drinks took forever to come out, and we had to remind them over and over again. Service was not mean, but very impersonal, uncaring, and unfriendly. The food came out an hour later, one dish at a slow time. We had to ask for the rice, which came much later and in less quantity than we ordered. I did not like the food at all... overly sweet like most Americanized Thai places. Not for the authentic pallet. We tried several dishes, and I was impressed with none. An order of noodles arrived and I scooped some onto my plate. We then realized this was not our order. The neighboring table said it was theirs. They took it despite that fact that I had already eaten from it. The servers were oblivious. The very last dish arrived so much later than everything else. Ridiculous. We had intended on ordering desert, but wisely decided against it. After the meal was complete, we dashed. Will never step foot in here again, if I can help it. We have found a much better location for the upcoming rehearsal dinner, Thai Specialty 2. The owner herself assisted us on our tasting visit, and was so kind. The food is ten times better. Good food. Fresh produce and dishes are made to order. Clean dining room with a separate glassed off area for private parties. Service is fast and accurate. Waters are filled promptly. Menu is diverse. Tom Yum Noodle Soup ordered medium spicy was good, though had an odd sort of sweetness to it. I could have done without that aspect but the medium spice level was perfect. You can feel the heat but it doesn't interfere with the flavours, and the spiciness builds over time and by the end of the bowl, I was happily spiced. Pad Thai was light but still full of flavour. Sauce wasn't too heavy and the noodles were just right. All bean sprouts, carrots, and cilantro were super fresh and had great color. The chicken and shrimp were tender and the water didn't taste polluted. Prices are a bit high but it's expected. Service is a little too fast. We received the bill before we were done eating. Dining area is a bit small. All in all, we'd definitely come back, but hopefully we won't receive the bill 10 minutes into the meal. read more

For the past few months, I have been a frequent patron due to the convenience that they are close by. However, ever since I started dining in, I was very turned off by their consistently poor service. Some of the waitresses were unfriendly and can considerably be rude. They take forever and an eternity to take orders, deliver items to your table, and in handing you the check. Though I have to admit their food is passable and worthy of eating, what I find astonishing and unacceptable is their pad thai. The first time I had it, it had the texture of rubber and tasted overly tangy and bland. I gave them a second chance and re-ordered the pad thai, requesting that they make it more of a good balance of sweet and tangy. The second time around was even worse. We had a decent sized party so we waited to be seated, but no one came to say a word to us about the status of the table at all. We checked a couple times, and both times, the restaurant seemed pretty empty but they still would not seat us. Finally they put us on two separate tables when we could've easily sat at the same. After we requested it, they didn't even bother to come take our orders.. but had the time to stand there and glare and give us the side eye.. Finally, after one side of the table finished ordering, the girl just left without even asking the other side if they were ready.. a bit rude. ONTO THE FOOD: -The pad kee mao was really good, fragrant with thai basil and chewy noodles. The chicken was really tender. -Chicken curry was also good, light and not too creamy and paired well with rice. -Crying tiger was bomb, the meat was tender and the sauce was good and pretty spicy so beware. -Seafood tom yum soup was decent, definitely had better but still good. You know why I am a fan? Because they have TWO of my FAVORITE Thai desserts: 1) mango sticky rice and 2) fried banana with coconut ice cream! The fried banana is used with the special Asian type banana too, not the usual Chiquita bananas we're used to having for breakfast. The menu is quite extensive, heaps of dishes that most Thai restaurants in Orange County don't have, including noodle soup dishes and a variety of fish. This is one of my 2 favorite Thai restaurants (the other is Sweetee Thai in Cerritos) mostly bc they both make excellent Tom Yum Noodle Soup! It's easy to find Tom Yum soup in all Thai restaurants, but it's super hard to find a Tom Yum Noodle dish, and even HARDER to find a tasty one! The dish comes with Tom Yum soup base (super tasty and flavorful), noodles (you can pick what kind, I go with the flat rice noodles), lots of chicken, bean sprouts, green onions, cilantro, shrimp, and 2 crispy wontons on top! You can pick the level of spicyness. Super filling and soooo delicious! I've also tried their Pad See Ew and various Fried Rices, as well as some of the different curry dishes. Everything is great! Big portions, you won't leave feeling hungry! The waitresses are all super nice and more than obliging if you need more napkins or water, and they're quick with the to-go boxes and the check. P.S. Looked over their menu and noticed it was a couple bucks pricier than the normal Thai places I frequent. After much debate, I ordered the Tom Yum Noodle Soup ($7.95) and it was HUGE! After seeing the other entree portions & prices, I think the noodle soups are the best bang for your buck! Tom Yum Noodle Soup (5!) - Giant bowl filled with chicken, shrimp, fish cake, crunchy wontons, lots of rice noodles all chilling in a really flavorful broth. Would add more heat next time to my bowl. Broth has all the best of Thai flavors: sour, sweet, and salty. With all the noodles they loaded in, I feel like I could've split it with someone! I would only return to get the Tom Yum soup. The fact that the other dishes were so expensive (rice not included), portions are small, AND then they charge you $1 for a small bowl of rice-- dissuades me from straying away from Thai-centric Lake Forest. read more

I've been back to Thai Cafe several times. For Irvine Thai Food, its as good as its going to get. Now if compared to Hollywood Thai Food, this place would be way over priced and just okay in terms of taste. but for the lazy OC family who can/and will only travel so far for food, this is a great middle ground. Same owner as Thai Kitchen (according to Thai Kitchen) therefore pricing is almost identical. Food is good, service is excellent, and is overall kid friendly. This is one of the few irvine non-chain restaurants and by far my favorite thai place in all of OC! Customer Service: My cup is always filled here...this is a huge plus being that their food can be spicy depending on what you order. Food comes out fast and hot. We've had several large parties here (I'm talking anywhere from 6-25+) and their staff is always helpful and accommodating to our needs. (i.e.: reserving the back room to give us a 'private party' area) Angie, the owner, will help me order just enough food for dinner without ever trying to get me to over-order. Above all that, they are all JUST really nice people. You definitely feel that family feel when you eat here which i really appreciate. Food: My 2 faves are their Pad Thai (spicy)--filled with fresh veggies and good quality proteins! None of that weird chicken ankle meat or whatever they serve at other places. You get strips of chicken breast and non-overcooked shrimp here. Som Tum (Papaya Salad--medium): Be careful how you order this! I love spicy food but can't go beyond medium for this; and I just like the way it tastes at this 'level' (but if you are a glutton for pain and love the burning sensation of thai chilis in your mouth, by all means order spicy!) Everything my co-worker and I had here was good. I know we got a curry -- I can't remember if it was coconut or red -- and some kind of noodle dish. (Sorry, it's been awhile.) I have tried practically EVERY Thai restaurant in the Irvine area, and I really like this one, which I can't say about many of the others. I always get pad thai, no matter what, and I always order it with very light oil, something that seems to go in one ear and out the other in most Thai restaurants - but not here!!! I was so happy that when I was ordering my takeout and asked for light oil on my pad thai, I could see that there was a specific option on her menu screen for light oil. My husband ordered the cashew chicken with mild spice and he really liked it. He also enjoyed the chicken and shrimp egg roles which he thought were AMAZING. He has very discriminating taste when it comes to egg roles, so for him to say they were amazing means they really were amazing. I also ordered the mango with sticky rice, and it was great. BEST PAD-SEE-EWE i've had outside of Thailand. Full of Garlic flavor, quality meat (beef or chicken), always perfect. Throw some red hot sauce on and i'm in Heaven. Their Pad Thai's decent too, just get it a little spicy for the perfect robust taste. Spicy Chicken Fried Rice is pretty dang good if you want a guaranteed food coma after dinner. From their pad Thai to chicken panang and cashew chicken, everything tastes amazing. The spice and flavors are always perfect. Horrible service.... I wanted to try this place out with my father during my lunch break. I called early to set a reservation and they told me not to worry, although they cannot take reservations for 2, they assured me i would not have a problem being seated right away. Fine.... My problem with this place was that when i arrived, i waited to speak with a hostess for about 10-15 minutes and when i asked for service they disregarded me (possibly because im white). Finally when the hostess came up to me she told me that there would be a 15-20 minute wait (even though there were open tables). I was reccomended to go here to because the food was great.....BUT IF I CANT EVEN GET SEATED HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO ENJOY THE FOOD. Thai Cafe is a cute little Thai restaurant that is tucked away in one of the many shopping centers in Irvine. Thanks to Yelp, I found Thai Cafe and a friend and I met up here for dinner the other night. We got to the restaurant at about 5:40pm and we were one of only three tables seated when we came -- about an hour and a half later when we finally left, the restaurant was filled almost to capacity! The server came out right away to take our orders and give us some water, which was nice. I ordered my usual, Pad Thai (about $10) and a Thai Iced Tea (about $3). My friend and I also ordered a soup for the both of us (about $13). My friend also ordered a Thai Iced Tea and I'm not sure what she ordered for her main dish. Our food came out less than ten minutes after we ordered, which was unexpected and great at the same time. My food was pretty good with just enough flavor and spices in it. The dishes were huge, though, and I only ate about half of my meal and one little bowl of soup. My friend ate about the same of her dish. Because of this, we took most of our meal home. I did get a stomach ache about 2 hours after eating. Not sure if it was because of the food or other reasons, but this always raises a concern to me. I did find a couple of cons with Thai Cafe. They are pretty pricey. The total came to about $43 for both of our meals and drinks. Also, the restaurant is kind of hard to locate in the shopping center. It is a free standing building, but the address numbers and the restaurants name is hard to spot, unless you are looking at the restaurant straight on from Jeffrey. I circled the parking lot twice before I found the restaurant. Overall, this place was just OK to me. I may come back here if I was meeting a friend in the area. Cheers! read more
