Never been in a TSO, went to this one because it was in-network. Saw Dr. Lisa Cantrel, she was nice but tried 3 types on contacts on me and couldn't get a good fit. It was to the point of settling on a set to just try out for a week. I had an appointment that I rescheduled 2 days in advance & advised them of the issues the contacts were giving me. Come in for my appointment with them, the girl told me up front told me that since they can't not fit me for proper fitting contacts that they would just give me a prescription for my glasses. She gives me an itemized receipt and told me nothing about charging me for a fitting for my contacts that I never got. I didn't notice the charge on there and they hit my insurance up for a contact lens fitting and didn't even give me a prescription. The Hispanic/Latin lady sitting up front that sits to the right of the window was misleading and did not give quality or accurate information. She told me that if I wasn't going to get contacts and I already had been seen for glasses that I didn't need to be seen. She said nothing of the sneaky move of charging on my insurance up for something I didn't get. This 1 star is for the woman that sits up front and is too busy jacking around on her cell phone to give quality service and information to the patient. I called the insurance company and they said they refused to resend the charge for a contact lens fitting and now I can't get glasses because you can only get one. Not to mention the Insurance rep called their office and she was told that I missed my appointment and didn't even show up for it. (Look at the camera footage, you will see me there at 11:30AM on 10/9/15). This place is shady don't trust them and if HAVE to go there get everything in writing and make sure you don't leave until everything is correct. Dr. Jansen and his office are terrific. I can always get an appointment when I need to. Vangie has fit me for at least 3 pair of glasses and lenses and is always very helpful in making my glasses fit properly. The prices are very good, particularly for progressive lenses, which were less than half of Santa Fe Optical. I can only say good things about this practice! read more

I have been here twice now over the last two years. The reason this isn't a 2 or even a 1 star review is because Dr. Jansen is AWESOME. He's kind and friendly and takes the time to get to know the basics about his patients. He remembers faces and makes you feel completely comfy. I walked in and he was able to see me 10 minutes later. And all the ladies that work in front (and the guys, too, though I think there may be only one) are amazing. With that said, there is one employee that I have had problems with, Angie. I believe that is her name. I was told by the other ladies that if I brought in my own frames, I could save my benefits for later that would pay for new frames. I said cool, cause I could save some money, and use my Mom's frames from a couple of decades ago (that are still quite strong). I brought them in, and when I showed them to Angie, she looked at me as though I were an idiot. "You know, I don't think you're using your benefits to their full potential with these. Is it for the sentimental value, is that why..." I shouldn't have to justify why I want my lenses in any particular set of frames. They're MY glasses, not YOURS. She raised her eyebrows, and made me feel like my decisions weren't good ones. She basically tried to talk me out of what I had decided... She wouldn't take my answers for answers, saying that if they broke they wouldn't be held responsible over and over until I had to spell it out for her: "I am familiar with the risks, and I am willing to take them. Thank you." I am a lot of things, but incompetent is not one of them, and that's what she made me feel for a minute or two before I had to lay down that my decisions were final. Part of me just thinks that she wanted to make a frame sale for the store instead of having my best interest at heart. And with a smile on my face and a smirk on hers, I left. She has no concept of customer service. I understand being aggressive and assertive in your work, but there is a limit. I shouldn't have to walk in prepared for a tone from a technician. She did get the $25 material fee waived, which was great, but only because the other ladies told me that if I brought in my own frames I wouldn't have to pay it; I don't think it was her decision to waive it. Dr. Jansen rocks, go here, see him. Great people, great doc, don't deal with Angie, she'll make you feel stupid. read more

Let me start by saying that Dr. Jansen is very professional and pleasant. He did not rush me in my appointment and I felt very satisfied after leaving. I would give him a 4.5 star review. Also the lady that is there to help you pick out frames is great. She helped point me in the right direction and since I've never had glasses before this was a huge help. This 2 star review is for his other office staff. They are incredibly disorganized, rude, and unprofessional. When I first arrived for my appointment, the staff behind the counter was gossiping loudly, and it took them a while to notice I was there. Then, while waiting for the Dr. in the exam room, two of the office staff were making rude comments (discriminatory in nature) about another guest who was out of earshot. At the end of my appointment, I was told that my prescription would be ready Saturday (today) and was told to call ahead before picking them up to make sure that they were ready. This morning when I called about my prescription, I was placed on hold for a good amount of time. When she finally came back to the phone, I was harshly told that they were not ready yet, and when they were ready, I would get a call. Then I was hung up on. I find it hard to believe that she could have know for a fact that my glasses aren't ready since she never asked my name or any of my information to look that up. I hope that by my next exam the staff will have been upgraded. read more

IF YOU'RE GOING HERE, CALL AHEAD AND ASK FOR DR. JANSEN. He's a very sweet older man who is a character in and of himself, and very helpful. It was time for me to get new glasses cause my boyfriend stepped on mine and my eyes were so irritated from constantly wearing contacts (and sleeping in them... I know, I know). I went for a walk-in and the younger doctor did kind of rush me out, saying he couldn't give me an eye exam because my eyes were so red and irritated. Anyway, he prescribed eye drops and told me to come back in a week for my exam. I did, and the staff made the fortunate mistake of scheduling me with Dr. Jansen, who is much friendlier and personable. He showed me pictures of eyes with glaucoma and messed up retinas, and advised me to be careful with cat litter if I ever get pregnant because certain chemicals in some brands can affect my children's eye development. Who knew! I didn't particularly need to know since I'm nowhere near ready to have kids, but it's something I'll keep in mind. He was very thorough and helpful. The lady who helps you pick out frames was honest with me about what looked good and what didn't, and when I'm there without a friend, my mom, or my brutually honest sisters, that's what I need the most. So props to her. I've read the reviews, and the staff must have been changed by the time I went. They were all very helpful with me because I'm not very familiar with how insurance works since I usually go to the health center at my school and don't have to deal with insurance. As I'm still on my parent's insurance, my mom needed a receipt and they were happy to fax her one since she lives in a different town. I recently called to have them fax a copy of my prescription to me and they did so very promptly ( without a cover sheet, which is unorganized but, what can you do). They're not over the top friendly, but they're patient and much more efficient than what they must have been. I do have to agree though, I wouldn't take my children here. It does seem like they don't want you to do anything or touch anything, which is kind of rude since kids are people too. It also smells very clean and chemically, has signs posted everywhere to not eat or drink (and I had a full cup of coffee, but I'm obviously SUCH a rebel), and is not very inviting. Overall, I wouldn't make this my permanent optometrist, but if you're in a bind and need a quick place to get glasses or contacts, this place is cheap, easy, and friendly. read more

Dr. Wilkins is unprofessional, rude, and inpatient. While in the waiting room, I heard him consulting with a patient with a disability. When asking her question (what looks better 1 or 2?) you could hear the impatience and frustration in his voice. Yes she added extra unnecessary comments, but so what? When it was my turn, he ushered me in there without introducing himself. When I asked him questions, in an attempt to understand what he was saying to me, he looked and acted like a teenager who's parents are annoying him. He asked me what words he needed to use to make sense to me. I kept my cool and asked him if he had a bad day (which happens to us all), he responded no. I let him know that he was being curt and he relaxed. The rest of the consultation was good, but do I really need to remind a doctor to work on his bedside manner. Seriously! If my insurance hadn't changed I would have stayed with my old doctor. Update: Went to Wal Mart to pick up contacts...handed them my prescription and found out that the inept staff at forgot to put all the information on the prescription. Wal Mart called them and were told that I had not paid my contact lens fee. Wrong!!! I called them back with the receipt # and the amount of payment...clearly showing that their bookkeeper sucks! Dr. Jansen is the best ! Had not been in in a year and my right contact decided to spend the night in my eye. Feels like a rock in your shoe. You just want it out !He examined my eyeball to find the lens, put on a mask since he would be close and flipped my lid to remove it ! It's not pleasant but he is skilled at getting them out. Not the best clinic I've been to. The glass lenses I received from them started getting hairline splits on the coating within half a year. I asked them if anything can be done and they said no. I went to another place after and I've been wearing them just fine with no notable faults. Also, I accidentally left my health insurance card with them and they never contacted me until I called them about it a month after. When asked why they haven't notified me the staff answered that she took it with her to home and just forgot to call me. Nice to know they don't value patients health information privacy. They then asked me to come out to pick it up. Instead of offering to mail it. Only when I asked them to, they reluctantly agreed. Recieved my card after a while. Also when I was in there they kicked out a patient because they were too busy even though she had an appointment. read more

Will not return. Would actively discourage others from using the Oltorf store. Customers who only get an eye exam or buy contacts may have a better experience. The eye exam is adequate, but they do not dilate pupils (you have to pay an extra $30 for an "equivalent" series of retinal photos). Customer service is poor. The staff is uninformed about eye glasses and eye issues. They are frequently short to the point of rudeness. The customer service staff's only goal seems to be minimizing time spent with customers. None of the customer service staff can fit glasses correctly. They did such a bad job each time (3 separate fittings) that they made the prescription feel wrong. The glasses they stock are of poor quality. The two pairs I bought fall apart easily. I've had to tighten screws on one only weeks after buying them and the frames have already cracked twice due to the constant adjustments I need to make to keep them from falling off. The hinges on the other pair are already so loose I worry that the screws will pop out. read more

Just moved back to Austin after 18 years and my bro-in-law referred me to Dr. Jansen. Awesome appointment. He addressed my concerns with my existing contact prescription, and fully explained why my nearsightedness + astigmatism + getting old did not make me a great candidate for bifocal contacts for which I'd hoped. He suggested a valid alternative that is working quite nicely for me - contacts for distance and reading glasses (who knew?). I like the Doctors here but the staff is horrible (one exception is the older red headed lady she was very nice and informative) for this I will not be going back anytime soon. I went to have a eye glasses and contact exam done, the younger ladies there were either stuck up or too timid to do their job no one helped me when I was looking for frames. When I did find the ones I wanted she did not tell me the price how long it would be till they got here. I would ask her these questions and she would look at me with a blank stare. I wanted a break down of what I payed for at the visit and it was so hard to get any of the young ladies to tell me and one finally did start explaining things it was wrong and did not make sense until the older lady with the red hair came up she actually knows what she is doing she explained everything to me and layed out my option on payment. When I go back to pick up my fames I may take that woman a gift because she was to suffer working with those other dim-wits. read more

I had an exam to get contacts in June, was told my contacts were on "back order" and someone would call me to come get them when they finally came in. So now it's September and I still haven't heard anything I called them and they said someone called me in August but I never got a voicemail or a call from them...I've been waiting. Also my insurance doesn't cover what they told me it would and nobody contacted me to let me know that change, so now I have an outstanding balance and no contacts. Bad customer service. read more

I think this staff is really doing their best, management gets involved without hesitation when there is an issue. My eyes have never been in better hands than in Dr. Jansen's hands. I cannot give this office anything less than 5 stars with Jansen at the helm. Seven years ago, I walked into his office with painful, red eyes. He quickly worked me into his schedule, prescribed medicine and a specialist, and my eyes were healed in no time. He insisted on seeing me several times afterward to ensure the issue was completely resolved. Dr. Jansen always takes the time necessary to thoroughly examine my eyes and discuss any issue. He sincerely cares about his patients and tries to find ways to get low-income patients free samples of helpful medications. He's as honest as the day is long and as top-notch a doctor as you'll find. I cannot recommend him highly enough. His prescriptions have been perfect, he recommended a contact solution less irritating to my finicky eyes, and he found a miraculous medicine to address the terrible allergies so painful to my eyes. When I was considering getting Lasix surgery, he talked with me at length and gave me the same recommendation he gave to his daughter. That's the thing about Dr. Jansen, it really feels like he cares for his patients as he would his one family members. He's also a sweet and interesting world traveler; I always look forward to conversation with him. As for the young doctor, I've seen him once and he gave me a fantastic prescription and took ample time to understand my concerns and issues. My only complaint (and perhaps it was the day I was there) was that he was performing some administrative functions while several of us waited to see him, though I have to say it wasn't terribly long. He also seemed nice and knowledgeable. Though I always prefer to see the ever-affable Dr. Jansen, I wouldn't hesitate to return to the other doctor if I couldn't see Dr. Jansen. I am a photographer by profession and am very particular about my prescriptions. They helped me choose a great pair of glasses at an affordable cost and I love them, they also have a great selection.
